McKee assists in return to action

News: Penguins D Jay McKee assisted and finished plus-1 in Saturday's loss to the Canadiens. McKee had sat out one game with an undisclosed injury.
Analysis: McKee is a nice veteran presence for the Pens, but he has never reach 20 points in a single season and doesn't pick up a whole lot of PIM. He remains just a flier in leagues that reward heavily for PIM and short-handed stats.

News: The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Penguins D Jay McKee, who missed Monday's game vs. Buffalo with an undisclosed injury, practiced Wednesday.
Analysis: McKee is a nice veteran presence for the Pens, but he has never reach 20 points in a single season and doesn't pick up a whole lot of PIM. He remains just a flier in leagues that reward heavily for PIM and short-handed stats when healthy.

McKee at minus-2 vs. Wild

News: Penguins D Jay McKee failed to record a point and finished at minus-2 on Monday against the Wild. He has only one point in his last 12 games.
Analysis: McKee has finished below even only six times in 40 games. He is usually a solid defensive presence when he gets onto the ice. Still, he is not a great offensive weapon. McKee remains just a flier in leagues that reward heavily for PIM and short-handed stats.

McKee back in lineup vs. Rangers

News: Penguins D Jay McKee was back in the lineup on Monday against the Rangers after missing six games with a finger injury. He had no points in 12:47 of ice time and finished at minus-1.
Analysis: An outcast in St. Louis, Pittsburgh has welcomed McKee with open arms in 2009-10. They needed a defensive presence after losing both Rob Scuderi and Hal Gill in the offseason and McKee has provided that. Still, he is not a great offensive weapon. McKee remains just a flier in leagues that reward heavily for PIM and short-handed stats.

McKee might return on Monday

News: The Sports Xchange reports Penguins D Jay McKee said he could play Monday against the Rangers after missing six straight games with an infected right finger. If he does, the Penguins would play with their regular defense corps for the first time since Oct. 20, when D Sergei Gonchar's left wrist was broken. Since then, only D Mark Eaton has yet to miss a game.

McKee latest Penguin D to go down

News: The Penguins official Web site reports that D Jay McKee will be sidelined the next 2-4 weeks with a finger infection.
Analysis: That makes it five Penguins blue-liners on the shelf now, with Sergei Gonchar, Brooks Orpik, Kris Letang and Alex Goligoski all banged up. McKee has never been a top offensive player and more on the ice for his defensive presence, so don't worry about him outside of leagues that reward heavily for PIM while he's out.

McKee assists in first game for Pens

News: Penguins D Jay McKee, who was picked up this summer after being waived by Columbus, assisted Tuesday as Pittsburgh defeated his former team 5-4 in OT. McKee is coming off knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus.
Analysis: McKee had one goal and seven assists and 44 penalty minutes for the St. Louis Blues in 69 games last season. The 31-year-old 6-foot-4, 203-pound defenseman has played parts of 13 seasons in the NHL with the Blues and the Buffalo Sabres. McKee has played 740 games in the NHL, with 20 goals, 95 assists and 568 penalty minutes. He is expected to help pick up the loss of defensive blue liners Rob Scuderi and Hal Gill, who both left the team in the offseason. McKee has never been a top offensive player and more on the ice for his defensive presence. McKee has minimal Fantasy appeal outside of leagues that reward heavily for PIM.

McKee surprisingly cut by Blues

News: The St. Louis Blues are cutting ties with Jay McKee, buying out the final year of the defenseman's contract. The 31-year-old McKee signed a four-year, $16-million free agent contract in 2006 and was due $4 million for next season. The Blues are responsible for two-thirds ($2.64 million) of McKee's salary, which will be spread out the next two seasons.
Analysis: McKee, known for his shot-blocking ability, played in 158 games during an injury-marred tenure in St. Louis. He had three goals and 14 assists in three seasons. "It's not something I expected, especially after my most productive season in St. Louis," said McKee, who will become a free agent. "I understand they had a decision to make and I was one of them. The bottom line is, I didn't fit in their depth chart and my salary was probably a hindrance to their payroll." McKee will have knee surgery this offseason, but is expected to be ready for training camp. He has never been a top offensive player and more on the ice for his defensive presence. McKee has minimal Fantasy appeal outside of leagues that reward heavily for PIM.

McKee should be ready for camp

News: The Sports Xchange reports Blues D Jay McKee has a torn meniscus in his knee and was scheduled to undergo minor surgery in the offseason. McKee will be available at the start of training camp.
Analysis: McKee is going to be one of the Blues' highest-paid defensemen ($4 million) heading into 2009-10, so they need him at 100 percent. McKee totaled one goal and seven assists in 69 games last season. He also had a plus-11 rating. He has never been a top offensive player and more on the ice for his defensive presence. McKee will be playing for his next contract, but he still has minimal Fantasy appeal Draft Day.

McKee remains in press box

News: Blues D Jay McKee was a healthy scratch for the second straight game Monday against the Rangers. He last appeared in a game Feb. 12 against the Predators and last had a point Nov. 29 against the Oilers.
Analysis: It's not hard to see why the Blues are fed up with McKee. He has just two points on the season and a minus-3 rating. He has never been a top offensive blue liner, but his play hasn't been this bad in a while. McKee is best used in leagues that reward heavily for short-handed stats when active.

McKee takes penalty in return

News: Blues D Jay McKee played Tuesday against the Flames for the first time since Dec. 16 because of a finger injury. He didn't have a point in 16:38 of ice time and finished at even. He also spent two minutes in the penalty box.
Analysis: McKee will provide St. Louis with a nice defensive presence now that he is back on the ice, but don't expect a lot in the way of offense. He is best used in leagues that reward heavily for short-handed stats when healthy.

McKee ready to rejoin lineup

News: The Sports Xchange reports Blues D Jay McKee (finger) says he's ready to play, but the Blues have chosen not to put him in the lineup. Following a bad effort Sunday at Edmonton, the Blues may elect to put McKee in the lineup Tuesday at Calgary.
Analysis: McKee has just two points this season and isn't on the ice for his offensive contributions. He has never been that type of player. He is a defensive-minded player and best used in leagues that reward heavily for short-handed stats when healthy.

McKee healing pretty quickly

News: The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Blues D Jay McKee (broken finger) has been practicing recently (stickhandling and shooting) and could return sooner than expected. “The key thing with Jay is, he feels a lot better,” Coach Andy Murray said. “When he took his glove off today, I just wanted to make sure that the tip of his finger wasn’t still in it. His tip was basically right off, it was hanging. It’s amazing that he’s out there right now, taking shots.”
Analysis: McKee has just two points this season and isn't on the ice for his offensive contributions. He has never been that type of player. He is a defensive-minded player and best used in leagues that reward heavily for short-handed stats when healthy.

McKee sees drop in playing time

News: The Sports Xchange reports Blues D Jay McKee had seen his ice time gradually decrease before playing 19:41 Saturday against Phoenix. McKee was down to 12:30 in Friday's game against Calgary. "It looks like (Carlo) Colaiacovo can handle the puck pretty well," Blues coach Andy Murray said. "(Jeff) Woywitka's played pretty well in that area. It's not uncommon for one of your six defensemen -- if you look at most teams -- to play 13-16 minutes. He's a defensive-type defenseman."
Analysis: McKee has just two points this season and isn't on the ice for his offensive contributions. He has never been that type of player. He is a defensive-minded player and best used in leagues that reward heavily for short-handed stats.

McKee trying to add offense

News: The Sports Xchange reports the Blues got goals from D Jay McKee, D Steve Wagner and D Eric Brewer during Thursday's 6-1 win against the Stars, giving their defensemen a combined four goals in four games this season. A year ago, the Blues' defensemen accounted for only 15 goals. "We want to add to the offense as much as we can," McKee said. "As defensemen, our main focus is getting the puck to the net. That's what they've been stressing, and we'll continue to do what we're told."
Analysis: McKee, who also finished at plus-2, had his first point in four games Thursday. It was just his third goal since the 2006-07 season. McKee had a solid preseason and is doing well with added ice time in 2008-09. McKee has never really shown a lot of offensive burst before in his career. It really does appear he is motivated to help out the Blues. We aren't buying the farm just yet with McKee, but he is definitely someone to watch in Fantasy.

McKee ready to be leader

News: The Sports Xchange reports Blues D Jay McKee, perhaps disturbed by all the trade rumors, said he's ready to prove his worth to the team and be a leader on a young defense.
Analysis: McKee has been solid in the preseason with three assists and a plus-5 rating in four games. It's just the preseason, but McKee has never really shown this much offensive burst before in his career. It really does appear he is motivated to help out the Blues. We aren't buying the farm just yet with McKee, but he is definitely someone to watch in Fantasy.

McKee scorer very rare goal

News: Low-scoring defenseman Jay McKee got the go-ahead goal off an aggressive play midway through the third period in the St. Louis Blues' slump-busting 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night. McKee has two goals and six assists in 45 games. But he rushed the net on the go-ahead goal, knocking in a pass from Martin Rucinsky past Jason LaBarbera at 8:29 of the third.
Analysis: The Blues have won five straight against the Kings. McKee has a plus-5 rating in his last five games, which usually adds up to some nice Fantasy numbers in leagues that reward nice play from defensemen. McKee has next to no Fantasy value at the moment.

J. McKee helping out lately

News: Blues D Jay McKee claimed his third assist in his last four games Tuesday when he helped out in St. Louis' 6-1 rout of the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Analysis: McKee has a plus-5 rating in his last four, which usually adds up to some nice Fantasy numbers in leagues that reward nice play from defensemen. Still, with only one goal and four assists this season, McKee has next to no Fantasy value at the moment.

McKee scratched again

News: For much of the past two seasons, a plethora of injuries forced the Blues to patch together a defensive lineup. Now the Blues have the exact opposite problem: They have too many healthy defensemen. The Blues currently have eight on the roster, and for the fifth consecutive game Wednesday, veteran Jay McKee was a healthy scratch. Matt Walker sat out his 10th straight game.
Analysis: Part of the reason McKee and Walker were scratched again is because the Blues had a four-game winning streak going into Wednesday's game in Detroit. "As I've always said, there has to be a reason to take somebody out," Blues coach Andy Murray said. "If a guy is playing pretty well and he has one tough game, it's tough to take him out of the lineup." McKee understands the competition having eight defensemen creates, but he is not happy. McKee is in the second year of a four-year, $16 million contract, after playing in only 23 games last season because of injuries. Their Fantasy appeal is limited to the deepest of leagues.

McKee scratched on Tuesday

News: D Jay McKee was the Blues' third top-six defensemen to be a healthy scratch this season Tuesday against the Detroit Red Wings. McKee joined Bryce Salvador and Christian Backman as defensemen who have entered Blues coach Andy Murray's doghouse early in the season.
Analysis: McKee, who played only 13:10 in last Friday's 4-2 loss to Chicago, is a plus-1 this year. He missed several weeks at the start of the season because of a broken foot. His Fantasy appeal is limited to the deepest of leagues.
