Habs' Beaulieu Inks Two-Year Extension

News: Nathan Beaulieu signed a two-year, $2 million contract extension with the Canadiens on Saturday, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
Analysis: Nathan Beaulieu managed to register eight assists and one goal in 64 games with the Canadiens this season. The 22-year-old defender began to see some time on the Habs' second power-play unit this season, and will likely spend the majority of his playing time as a part of the team's second defensive pairing next year.

Habs' Beaulieu Suffered Fractured Sternum

News: Nathan Beaulieu suffered a fractured sternum in Game 3 against the Senators, the team revealed Thursday, Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette reports.
Analysis: The team simply called it an "upper body injury" for the duration of the playoffs, but it caused Nathan Beaulieu to miss seven games. He returned to play two games against Tampa Bay in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, and it's unclear whether the injury will require offseason surgery.

Habs' Beaulieu Returns

News: Nathan Beaulieu returned to the lineup Saturday after missing the Habs' previous seven games with an upper-body injury.
Analysis: Nathan Beaulieu replaced Greg Pateryn in the lineup and had one shot on goal in 14:29 of ice time.

Habs' Beaulieu On Ice For Morning Skate

News: Nathan Beaulieu (upper body) was on the ice for the Habs' morning skate on Saturday, John Lu of TSN Montreal reports.
Analysis: It appears as though Nathan Beaulieu will be able to suit up for Saturday's Game 5 against the Lightning. The Habs should confirm his availability prior to puck drop on Saturday.

Habs' Beaulieu Practices Tuesday

News: Nathan Beaulieu (upper body) took part in practice Tuesday for the Canadiens, Sportsnet.ca reports.
Analysis: The Canadiens have already ruled Nathan Beaulieu out for the next two games of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series with the Lightning, but his return to practice could allow him to return as soon as Game 5. His progress will be monitored over the next several days.

Habs' Beaulieu Remains Sidelined

News: Nathan Beaulieu (upper body) will miss at least the first four games of Montreal's Round 2 playoff series.
Analysis: As a result, Greg Pateryn figures to remain in the Habs' blue line mix, with Nathan Beaulieu ruled out through Game 4 of the team's upcoming series against either Detroit or Tampa Bay, at a minimum.

Habs' Beaulieu Skates Wednesday

News: Nathan Beaulieu skated on his own prior to Wednesday's practice, Jessica Rusnak of TSN Radio 690 reports.
Analysis: The solo skate session last about one hour and amounted to Nathan Beaulieu's first on-ice activity since exiting Game 3 with the injury. It seems doubtful at this point that Beaulieu will be ready to play in Game 1 of the Canadiens' second-round series versus the winner of Wednesday's match between the Red Wings and Lightning, likely allowing Greg Pateryn to hold down a spot in the lineup.

Habs' Beaulieu Sidelined

News: Nathan Beaulieu (upper-body injury) will be out for the rest of the Habs' playoff series against Ottawa.
Analysis: Montreal holds a 3-0 lead in the series, but assuming the team advances, it's unclear if Nathan Beaulieu will be a candidate to return to start the second round of the playoffs. With Beaulieu out, Greg Pateryn is a candidate to re-enter the Habs' blue line mix in Wednesday's Game 4 in Ottawa.

Habs' Beaulieu Returns To Lineup

News: Nathan Beaulieu returned to the lineup Thursday night after missing two games with an illness.
Analysis: Nathan Beaulieu played nearly 19 minutes in a 4-0 win over Carolina. He skated on the third pairing with Greg Pateryn.

Habs' Beaulieu Likely To Play Thursday

News: Nathan Beaulieu (illness) appears likely to play Thursday against the Hurricanes.
Analysis: Nathan Beaulieu missed the previous two games while dealing with the flu, but was back on the ice at Thursday's morning skate, slotting in next to Tom Gilbert on the Habs' second pairing. It seems Jeff Petry is the latest among the team's blueliners to fall victim to the flu, and Beaulieu apparently will have the first crack at replacing him.

Canadiens' Beaulieu Sitting Out Another

News: Nathan Beaulieu (illness) was scratched for Tuesday's game against the Panthers.
Analysis: Nathan Beaulieu is apparently still feeling weakened by the flu, which prevented him from playing in Monday's loss against the Lightning. Alexei Emelin, who was activated from injured reserve Monday, will assume Beaulieu's lineup spot for a second straight game.

Habs' Beaulieu Under The Weather

News: Nathan Beaulieu (illness) won't play Monday against the Lightning.
Analysis: Consider Nathan Beaulieu -- who has seven points in 54 games for the Habs to date -- day-to-day as Tuesday's game against the Panthers approaches.

Habs' Beaulieu May Be Out Saturday

News: Nathan Beaulieu skated on the fourth defense pairing during Friday's practice, the Montreal Gazette reports.
Analysis: Head coach Michel Therrien wasn't pleased with his team's defensive effort in Thursday's 5-2 loss to the Senators, so he's prepared to make a change. Greg Pateryn, who was called up Friday from AHL Hamilton, skated with Sergei Gonchar at practice and will play Saturday against the Islanders.

Habs' Beaulieu More Comfortable

News: Nathan Beaulieu had an assist and six hits in 23:45 in Saturday night's 3-1 win over Columbus. The 22-year-old defenseman has logged 24:30 over the past three games, over eight minutes more than his season average.
Analysis: Nathan Beaulieu, who has a goal and an assist in the last three games, has been pressed into a larger role with both Alexei Emelin and Sergei Gonchar sidelined with upper-body injuries, but the kid has been preparing for this moment since his callup in December. He's showing more poise and confidence, evidenced by his first-period assist when he faked a shot from the point, pinched in along the boards, held the puck, and then set up Max Pacioretty to give Montreal a 2-0 lead.

Habs' Beaulieu Records First Goal

News: Nathan Beaulieu scored the first goal of his NHL career in Wednesday night's 4-2 loss to the Senators.
Analysis: Nathan Beaulieu was pressed into heavy duty Wednesday, skating a season-high 24 minutes after the Canadiens, already without Sergei Gonchar (upper body), lost Alexei Emelin on the game's first shift with an upper-body injury.

Habs' Beaulieu Earns 17 PIM

News: Nathan Beaulieu picked up a season-high 17 PIM in Saturday's 2-1 shootout win over the Maple Leafs.
Analysis: Nathan Beaulieu picked up three penalties for retaliating on a borderline dirty hit by the Leafs' David Clarkson that resulted in Sergei Gonchar's removal from the game with an upper-body injury. The young blueliner isn't normally this feisty and hasn't offered much offense this season either, so those looking for help in the PIM category need not read too much into Saturday's contributions.

Habs' Beaulieu Gets Assist In Win

News: Nathan Beaulieu collected a helper in Tuesday's win over the Stars.
Analysis: The 22-year-old is viewed as a vital part of the future on the blue line for the Canadiens, but he hasn't emerged as much of an asset this season. He's mustered only five points in 31 games, while averaging 15:16 TOI.

Habs' Beaulieu Gets Defensive

News: Nathan Beaulieu skated 19:20 and had three blocked shots in Monday night's 3-1 over Carolina.
Analysis: Nathan Beaulieu was playing in his first game since being promoted to the second defense pairing and produced like a top-four blue-liner. He also got time on the second power-play unit.

Habs Promote Beaulieu

News: Nathan Beaulieu has been moved up to the second defensive pairing, the Montreal Gazette reports. He'll skate with Sergei Gonchar.
Analysis: With the promotion, Nathan Beaulieu should get north of 20 minutes a game, including time on the power play. The seasoned Gonchar will certainly help Beaulieu's transition and hopefully give the young defenseman the advice he needs to remain a top four blue-liner.

Habs' Beaulieu Plays Tuesday

News: Nathan Beaulieu, who was called from the AHL Hamilton on Monday, skated 11:24 of largely error-free hockey in Tuesday night's 3-1 over the Canucks.
Analysis: Nathan Beaulieu's been up-and-down and in-and-out so far this season, a year in which the Canadiens were hoping the young blueliner would stake his claim on a starting spot for years to come.

Habs Recall Beaulieu

News: The Canadiens recalled Nathan Beaulieu from AHL Hamilton on Monday, Renaid Lavoie of Journal de Montreal reports.
Analysis: With Mike Weaver (concussion) moving to IR, there was a roster spot available to call up Nathan Beaulieu. He'll practice with the team on Tuesday, and could be in the lineup that night against the Canucks.

Habs Reassign Beaulieu

News: The Canadiens reassigned Nathan Beaulieu to AHL Hamilton on Monday.
Analysis: Nathan Beaulieu registered two assists and a minus-3 rating in 14 games with the Canadiens, and will be a prime candidate to be called up again if the team needs blue-line depth.

Canadiens Recall Beaulieu

News: Nathan Beaulieu was recalled from Hamilton of the American Hockey League, Hockey Inside Out reports.
Analysis: Nathan Beaulieu joined the team in Edmonton where the Habs kick off a three-game swing through western Canada. He began the season as part of the top-six defenders, but has since been supplanted by Jarred Tinordi.

Habs Assign Beaulieu To Minors

News: Nathan Beaulieu was assigned to AHL Hamilton on Wednesday, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
Analysis: Nathan Beaulieu will stay with Hamilton until Sunday, when he'll rejoin the Canadiens in Edmonton. The 21-year-old has been a healthy scratch for the Habs' last three games, so the demotion looks to be just an excuse for the organization to find him some ice time.

Canadiens' Beaulieu Blocks Capitals

News: Nathan Beaulieu registered a team-high four blocked shots in Thursday night's 2-1 shootout victory over the Capitals.
Analysis: After Tom Gilbert blocked four in the season-opening win Wednesday, it was Nathan Beaulieu's turn to do the Josh Gorges impression Thursday. The Canadiens opted to move on from Gorges - one of the league's most prolific shot blockers - in the offseason and are looking for contributions like this from his replacements. Beaulieu is known more for his offensive proclivities on the blue line, but he put his body on the line for goalie Dustin Tokarski in the win.
