Preds' Ekholm Scores In Loss

News: Mattias Ekholm scored his first playoff goal in Sunday's Game 3 loss to the Blackhawks.
Analysis: Mattias Ekholm doesn't often work his way onto the scoresheet as the point was just his first in six games and his first goal in nine contests. The defenseman tallied a career-high 18 points throughout the season and provides solid production for the Predators, but it doesn't always translate for fantasy purposes.

Preds' Ekholm Opens Scoring In Win Over Habs

News: Mattias Ekholm got his team on the board with a first-period goal in Tuesday's 3-2 OT win over the Canadiens. It was his 16th point of the season and first in 12 games.
Analysis: Mattias Ekholm doesn't hit the scoresheet often, but with guys like Shea Weber and Roman Josi patrolling the Preds' blue line, he doesn't have to. The team counts on him for his defensive prowess first and foremost, so that means solid play in his own zone is a must. It doesn't translate into much fantasy value outside of deeper formats, but at least with Ekholm, you know what you're getting.

Preds' Ekholm Showing Physical Edge

News: Mattias Ekholm failed to crack the scoresheet for the ninth straight game Sunday against the Ducks, but saw 20:09 worth of ice time and laid out a season-high five hits.
Analysis: Mattias Ekholm doesn't score much - just 15 points in 69 games so far this season - but he's usually pretty reliable in his own zone and his physical game is on the rise. He's currently tied for fourth on the team in plus-minus with a +14 rating, he's hitting more compared to last season (52 vs. 42) and his blocked shots are up (82 vs. 55). Bottom line, Ekholm's efforts don't usually show up on the scoresheet, but he's starting to deliver more value in secondary stat categories. That's worth something in the fantasy world.

Preds' Ekholm Getting Noticed For Solid Play

News: Mattias Ekholm's solid play on the Preds' blue line this season has been drawing rave reviews from the team's coaching staff, according to the Tennessean. "He provides really everything," coach Peter Laviolette said recently. "He's been outstanding this year."
Analysis: While Shea Weber, Roman Josi, and Seth Jones are the Preds' defensemen that generally get most of the attention, Mattias Ekholm has also made an impact. "He's a big guy that skates really well," according to Laviolette. "He closes the defense quickly. He's got a good stick. His skill level is high. He can get out of our end. He can make little plays in the corners to find space to make breakout passes. He skates the puck out of our end and through the neutral zone effortlessly and offensively he can contribute. He plays all situations for us and is heavily counted on." From a fantasy perspective, Ekholm has just 14 points in 58 games, but his average ice time has risen from 16:49 per game last season to 18:59 currently, and he's now seeing occasional minutes on the second power-play unit. While Ekholm's fantasy value is still confined mainly to deeper formats, his stock is on the rise. Those of you in deep keeper leagues may want to take advantage.

Preds' Ekholm Returning Saturday

News: Mattias Ekholm (upper body) will rejoin the Predators' lineup Saturday.
Analysis: Mattias Ekholm had missed the team's last two games with the injury, but has been skating since Thursday. He will occupy a spot on the Preds' third defensive pairing next to Victor Bartley during Saturday's game.

Preds' Ekholm (Upper Body) To Sit Thursday

News: Mattias Ekholm (upper body) will not play Thursday against the Jets.
Analysis: Mattias Ekholm was able to resume skating with the team Thursday morning, but is still in need of more time to get back up to full speed following his injury. If he's able to get in another practice session Friday, Ekholm could be ready to go for Saturday's match against the Devils.

Preds' Ekholm Skates Thursday

News: Mattias Ekholm (upper body) took part in the Preds' morning skate Thursday.
Analysis: Mattias Ekholm filled in on the Preds' top pairing for Shea Weber, who took a maintenance day. It was Ekholm's first time on the ice since leaving Sunday's game, so he might not be quite ready to play Thursday against the Jets. If that's the case, Anthony Bitetto would likely fill in for him for the second straight game.

Preds' Ekholm Iffy For Tuesday

News: Mattias Ekholm (upper body) did not participate in Tuesday's morning skate and is thus not expected to play later in the evening against the Lightning, The Tennessean reports.
Analysis: If Mattias Ekholm is in fact unable to suit up Tuesday night against the Lightning, look for Anthony Bitetto to fill in for him on the Preds' blue line.

Ekholm Done With Upper-Body Injury

News: Mattias Ekholm suffered an upper-body injury in Sunday's game against the Panthers and will not return, play-by-play announcer Willy Daunic reports.
Analysis: Mattias Ekholm was in a collision against the boards in the second period, and the issue was apparently serious enough to prevent him from returning. The Predators will need to play the remainder of the game a blueliner down, but if the injury threatens to sideline Ekholm longer, the club may need to recall another defenseman.

Preds' Ekholm Gets Fifth Goal

News: Mattias Ekholm scored his second goal in as many games Saturday against the Red Wings, lighting the lamp on his only shot attempt.
Analysis: Mattias Ekholm continues to enjoy a career-best season, but his production isn't overwhelming in the fantasy realm. He has a respectable 13 points and a plus-14 rating over 44 games, which relegates his value primarily to deeper formats.

Preds' Ekholm Enjoying Career Season

News: Mattias Ekholm scored a goal for the second consecutive game Sunday against the Ducks, giving him a career-high 11 points in 38 games.
Analysis: Mattias Ekholm is seeing a greater number of scoring opportunities this year since being bumped up from the Preds' third defensive pairing to the second, skating alongside Ryan Ellis. As a result, his average ice time has risen from 16:49 last season to 18:11 currently. He still only has value in deeper fantasy formats, but it's nice to see his development into a reliable, top-four NHL defenseman continue. At just 24 years old, Ekholm's best years are likely still ahead of him.

Preds' Eklholm Chips In Two Helpers

News: Mattias Ekholm handed out a pair of assists during Tuesday's 5-3 loss in Boston.
Analysis: He's not an offensive defenseman, but Mattias Ekholm has matched last year's scoring total (nine points), and it took him 33 games instead of 62. He's also flipped around his plus-minus this year, though much of that can be attributed to the incredible play of Pekka Rinne in net for the Predators.

Ekholm's OT Winner Puts Preds Past Wild

News: Mattias Ekholm scored the OT winner - his seventh point of the season - during Saturday's 6-5 win over Minnesota.
Analysis: With Anton Volchenkov out with a lower-body injury, Mattias Ekholm has been seeing more ice time lately, averaging roughly 20 minutes per game in his past four contests, compared to his season average of about 18 minutes. That said, he still doesn't score enough to warrant much fantasy consideration outside of very deep leagues.

Ekholm Playing Assistant For Preds

News: Mattias Ekholm dished out a pair of assists -- one on the power play -- in Thursday's win over Nashville.
Analysis: They were both secondary helpers, but Mattias Ekholm has nonetheless been doing a fine job of puck moving lately, having rattled off four helpers in his last four games. His ice time dropped back down to only 15:08 on Thursday, but it should be poised to rise with the way he's been rolling offensively.

Preds' Ekholm Enjoying Three-Game Point Streak

News: Mattias Ekholm, who recorded an assist for the third straight game Sunday against the Canucks, has seen his ice time rise to the 18½-19 minute mark in three of his last four games.
Analysis: Mattias Ekholm, who skated mostly on the Preds' third defensive pairing last season, has been promoted to the second unit this year alongside Seth Jones. His fantasy value is still limited to deeper formats, however given his current pace, he should easily surpass the nine points he had in 62 games last season. Keep him rolling as long as he's hot.

Ekholm Resuming Defensive Role For Preds

News: Mattias Ekholm played 17:03 in Saturday's preseason loss to the Blue Jackets. He had just a single shot on goal along with a pair of hits.
Analysis: Mattias Ekholm, who recorded nine points in 62 games for the Preds as a rookie last season, showed real scoring potential in the AHL two seasons ago and in Sweden back in 2010-11. However, his role in Nashville thus far has been more of a stay-at-home defenseman. The Preds will continue to rely on guys like Shea Weber, Roman Josi and Seth Jones to jump in and join the rush, while Ekholm will focus mainly on keeping the puck out of his own net. Bottom line, there's not much fantasy potential here, outside of ultra-deep leagues. Ekholm is expected to open the season on the Preds' third defensive pairing alongside Ryan Ellis.

Ekholm Signs Two-Year Deal With Preds

News: Mattias Ekholm has signed a two-year, $2.075 million contract with the Predators, the Tennessean reports.
Analysis: Mattias Ekholm, who was a restricted free agent, will thus avoid arbitration by inking the one-way deal with Nashville. He's coming off a rookie campaign in which he recorded nine points in 62 games for the Preds.

Preds Bench Ekholm

News: Mattias Ekholm went into the Olympic break as a healthy scratch, riding the pine for the last two games.
Analysis: Mattias Ekholm has just five points in 39 games this season, giving him very little fantasy value in even the deepest of leagues. He's currently alternating with Victor Bartley as the Preds' sixth defenseman, and lines up alongside Ryan Ellis when he does get the chance to play.

First NHL Goal For Preds' Ekholm

News: Skating in his 32nd career game, Mattias Ekholm recorded his first NHL goal Tuesday against the Sharks, a second-period tally that gave the Preds a 2-1 lead that they'd never relinquish.
Analysis: Nice to see the 2009 fourth-rounder find his way into the goal column for the first time in the big leagues. Mattias Ekholm showed real scoring potential in the AHL last year (10 goals and 32 points in 59 games) and in Sweden back in 2010-11 (10 goals and 33 points in 55 games), but despite his 6-foot-4, 204-pound frame, the 23-year-old hasn't yet figured out how to play with the kind of edge that he'll need to succeed on both ends at the NHL level.

Preds' Ekholm Comes Off Bench

News: Mattias Ekholm saw 15 minutes of ice time Monday against the Red Wings.
Analysis: After sitting out six games as a healthy scratch in mid-December, Mattias Ekholm has since played in four of the last five games. He will continue to occupy either the No. 6 or No. 7 defenseman spot on the Preds' roster, and possesses very little fantasy value as a result.

Preds' Ekholm Still Sitting As Healthy Scratch

News: Preds coach Barry Trotz said he believes Mattias Ekholm, who has missed the past three games as a healthy scratch, is doing everything he can to get back in the lineup, the Tennessean reports. "I think [Ekholm returning to the lineup] is more me deciding to make a change than anything," Trotz said. "He's doing all the right things right now."
Analysis: After sitting out seven consecutive games in the second half of November, Mattias Ekholm returned to action for a mini three-game stint while Shea Weber and Kevin Klein were out with injuries. However, now that Weber and Klein are back, Ekholm has returned to riding the pine. Given his lack of offense (four assists in 21 games) along with his lack of ice time, Ekholm should not be in anyone's fantasy lineup right now.

Preds' Ekholm Comes Off Bench As Injury Sub

News: After missing the previous seven games as a healthy scratch, Mattias Ekholm finally saw some game action during Friday's OT loss to the Flyers, skating 15:04 on the Preds' third defensive pairing.
Analysis: With Shea Weber (eye) and Kevin Klein (lower body) currently on the shelf, Mattias Ekholm should continue to see modest amounts of ice time as an injury fill-in. However, he will most surely head back to the bench as soon as the walking wounded return. As a result, Ekholm's fantasy value is currently limited to the deepest of formats only.

Preds' Ekholm Sees First-Line Duty Friday

News: Mattias Ekholm took Seth Jones' spot on the first defensive pairing during Friday's 5-0 loss to Winnipeg, the Tennessean reports.
Analysis: Coach Barry Trotz was not happy with Jones' play during the first few minutes of the game, so Mattias Ekholm wound up skating 20:33 - the most minutes he's seen all season - alongside stud defenseman Shea Weber. It remains to be seen whether this is a permanent switch, but we suspect Ekholm may be back in his usual third-pairing role next time out. Monitor closely.

Ekholm Enjoying Full Time Status With Preds

News: Mattias Ekholm has zero points through six games so far this season for the Preds, along with a -2 rating.
Analysis: After playing just three games combined over the previous two seasons, Mattias Ekholm is finally enjoying his first taste of full-time status with the Preds. He's also playing a top-four role, averaging almost 20 minutes per night, which is roughly four minutes more than last season. Unfortunately, he is also being used primarily in a defensive role, giving him marginal fantasy value in most formats.

Predators Reassign Ekholm

News: Mattias Ekholm has been reassigned to AHL Milwaukee on Tuesday.
Analysis: Mattias Ekholm, who got recalled by the Predators on Monday, will return to Milwaukee to play in a key league game for the Admirals on Tuesday. Ekholm could return for Friday's game against the Blackhawks.
