Leafs' Gardiner: Gets Assist, But Game Not Growing

News: Jake Gardiner picked up an assist in Thursday's loss to the Devils.
Analysis: He has three assists in his last three games, but has only seven points in 23 games. His game hasn't grown this season, but he has shown occasional flashes. But his minus-10 rating is a bit of an anchor for those of you in leagues that count that stat. He still has a solid future, but it won't be this year.

Leafs' Gardiner In Lineup Saturday

News: Jake Gardiner (knee) is in the lineup Saturday against the Rangers, Jonas Siegel of TSN reports.
Analysis: Jake Gardiner went into warmups as a game-time decision, but he will play. The blueliner has a goal and an assist in 11 games this season.

Leafs' Gardiner A Game-Time Decision Saturday

News: Jake Gardiner (lower body) will be a game-time decision Saturday against the Rangers, Jonas Siegel of TSN Radio 1050 reports.
Analysis: Jake Gardiner took part in the Leafs' morning skate and said he felt fine, but he'll be examined in pregame warmups before the team signs off on his return to the lineup. Even prior to suffering the injury, Gardiner had been off to an uninspiring start to the season, contributing two points in 11 games.

Gardiner Dealing With Bone Bruise

News: Jake Gardiner is dealing with a bone bruise and was seen limping in the locker room following Thursday's game, Jonas Siegel of TSN 1050 reports.
Analysis: Jake Gardiner left the game and underwent an X-ray before being ruled out for the game. The fact that he isn't dealing with a break is encouraging, but his status for Saturday's game appears questionable at this point.

Gardiner (Lower Body) Leaves And Won't Return

News: Jake Gardiner left Thursday's game with a lower-body injury and will not return.
Analysis: Jake Gardiner went to the dressing room and received X-Rays, and was later ruled out. The team will likely update his status in the future, but he should be considered day-to-day until something more is revealed.

Leafs' Gardiner Leaves Game With Knee Injury

News: Jake Gardiner left Thursday's game with what might be a knee injury, according to commentators on TSN.
Analysis: He came out to test it during a TV timeout, but immediately retreated to the dressing. It was initially thought to be an ankle injury, but he was seen outside the dressing room with ice on his knee. No word about his availability for the rest of the game.

Leafs' Gardiner Pots First

News: Jake Gardiner put home his first goal of the year Tuesday against the Sabres.
Analysis: The third-period tally was largely meaningless, extending the lead from 3-0 to 4-0 in a game that the Leafs completely dominated from start to finish. However, Jake Gardiner otherwise put up a rather quiet stat line, with just one shot on goal, one hit and a takeaway in 23:25. A 10-goal, 31-point scorer last year, Gardiner has just two points and four shots on goal in his first seven games.

Gardiner To Reenter Lineup For Leafs

News: Jake Gardiner will return to the lineup Friday against the Red Wings, Stephen Whyno of the Canadian Press reports.
Analysis: After serving as a healthy scratch for the last two games, Jake Gardiner looks set to replace Stephane Robidas on defense. As arguably the Leafs' best defenseman in the latter stages of the 2013-14 season, Gardiner's recent removal from the lineup was puzzling, but it looks like he may have regained some of coach Randy Carlyle's trust. Gardiner will be paired with Morgan Rielly in his return.

Leafs' Gardiner A Likely Healthy Scratch Tuesday

News: Jake Gardiner didn't take part in line rushes during Tuesday's pregame warmups and looks like he'll spend his second consecutive game in the press box, Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun reports.
Analysis: Jake Gardiner was scratched only two times for all of last season, so coach Randy Carlyle's decision comes as a curious one. The 24-year-old had an assist and a minus-3 rating over his first two games, but he surely makes the Leafs' lineup a better one when he plays.

Leafs' Gardiner May Sit Out Again Tuesday

News: Jake Gardiner may be a healthy scratch again Tuesday, reports the Toronto Star.
Analysis: The Leafs won Sunday and coaches are generally superstitious about keeping a winning lineup intact, so Jake Gardiner may once again be the odd man out. "It's understandable. It's how a lot of coaches think," Gardiner said after Monday's optional skate. He's considered a building block for the future, so he won't sit out for long. Just be prepared to adjust your lineup for Tuesday.

Leafs' Gardiner Scratched Sunday

News: Jake Gardiner has been scratched from Sunday's lineup, TSN's Jonas Siegel reports.
Analysis: The 24-year-old led the Leafs in ice time Saturday, so the move to leave him out as a healthy scratch is rather puzzling. Jake Gardiner, who signed a four-year deal this offseason, isn't likely to find himself scratched very often going forward.

Leafs, Gardiner Ink Five-Year Pact

News: Jake Gardiner signed a five-year, $20.25 million contract extension with the Maple Leafs on Tuesday, Chris Johnston of Rogers Sportsnet reports.
Analysis: Jake Gardiner, 24, asserted himself as a long-term building block for the Leafs on defense last season with his second 30-point campaign, contributing 10 goals, 21 assists, 108 hits and 87 blocks over 80 games. With Carl Gunnarsson shipped to St. Louis in the offseason, Gardiner appears poised to claim a spot next to Dion Phaneuf on the team's top defensive pairing, though fellow ascendant youngster Morgan Rielly will provide some heat.

Gardiner, Leafs Closing In On New Contract

News: Jake Gardiner and the Leafs are closing in on a long-term contract extension for the defender, reports Paul Hendrick of Leafs TV.
Analysis: Jake Gardiner is one of the Leafs' best young defenders. The guy can skate like the wind and jump into the play in the offensive zone like few can. He will be a fantasy force if he can harness his many talents and tools.

Gardiner To Get Shot In Leafs' Top Defense Pair?

News: Leafs general manager Dave Nonis says he wants either Jake Gardiner or Morgan Rielly to take Carl Gunnarson's spot on the top defense pairing, reports Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun.
Analysis: Geez -- neither guy is really ready for that job just yet and Jake Gardiner is coming off a season where he he started slowly and prone to several brain burps. Training camp will be interesting indeed, but if he wins the gig, his fantasy value will go up ... perhaps inappropriately. The increased pressure may lower his fantasy output. Watch and wait.

Leafs' Gardiner: Nine Assists In Last Nine Games

News: Jake Gardiner picked up two assists in Thursday's loss to the Panthers. He has nine points -- all assists -- in his last nine games.
Analysis: Is it a little too late? He finally grew into his game late last season, but at times this year, he struggled to re-find that magic. Jake Gardiner now has 31 points on the season.

Leafs' Gardiner: Four-Game, Six-Assist Streak

News: Jake Gardiner picked up two assists Saturday in a loss to Detroit. His current point streak now stands at four games and six assists, and he has been held off the scoresheet just once in his last seven games (eight points).
Analysis: He actually has 10 points, including four goals, in his last 10 games. And despite some defensive lapses, he has a plus-2 rating in those 10 games. He's now just two points from equalling his career mark of 30 points set in 2011-12.

Leafs' Gardiner Riding Small Streak

News: Jake Gardiner's assist in Friday's 4-2 loss to Philadelphia gives him a three-game point streak, with four helpers coming in the last three contests.
Analysis: Jake Gardiner has quietly been solid over the last two weeks with five points in five games. His numbers as a whole on the season are down, but he certainly has the talent to produce. He just doesn't do it nearly enough as the Leafs would like him to.

Toronto's Gardiner: Two More Assists

News: Jake Gardiner's two assists Tuesday night against St. Louis give him eight points, including five goals, in his last nine games.
Analysis: He has five points in his last five games and is starting to look, at least offensively, like the player he was at the end of last season and in the playoffs. Take advantage of this outburst. You'll still swallow hard when watching him in his own zone, but that only matters to Leafs fans, not fantasy owners.

Leafs' Gardiner: Fifth Goal In Last Seven Games

News: Jake Gardiner's hot hand continued Wednesday when he snagged his 10th goal of the season in a loss to the Lightning. He has five goals in his last seven games.
Analysis: Where have you been all season, young man? He finally looks to be getting comfortable and remember -- it took to almost the end of last season for the same to happen. He can be frustrating in his own zone, but none of that matters to fantasy owners. He should be active right now -- take advantage of him!

Leafs' Gardiner: Four Goals In Last Six Games

News: Jake Gardiner notched his ninth goal of the season in Tuesday's loss to the Red Wings. It came on the power play.
Analysis: Remarkably, four of those 10 goals have come in his last six games. He is talented, yet inconsistent. Roll the dice.

Gardiner Represents Leafs' Offense Tuesday

News: Jake Gardiner scored both Toronto goals -- one shorthanded -- in Tuesday's 6-2 shellacking at the hands (or maybe teeth?) of the Sharks.
Analysis: He's suddenly ripped off three goals on six shots over his last three games after enduring a 12-game scoreless slump. The 23-year-old Jake Gardiner possesses legitimate offensive upside, but after a quiet season this year, he'll likely come at an enticing value in next year's drafts.

Leafs' Gardiner: First Point In 13 Games

News: Jake Gardiner picked up his first point in 13 games when he scored a goal in Saturday's OT win over the Flyers. He has 18 points in 63 games this season.
Analysis: His game has been slow to develop, but that's OK as long as there's progress being made. And we think there is, despite the brain farts that sometimes escape out his ears. He got lucky in OT when he made a poor decision to pinch and that left an odd-man rush the other way. His name is mentioned all the time in trade scenarios, but we have no idea if that's real or contrived. This season, he's a marginal activation in deep formats -- the points just come too far apart to make him playable on a consistent basis.

Leafs' Gardiner In Slump

News: Jake Gardiner has five goals and 12 assists in 58 games through the Olympic break.
Analysis: The blueliner was held scoreless in the eight games leading up to the break, so he'll look to turn things around when the Leafs' season resumes on Feb. 27 against the Islanders. He should continue to be paired with Cody Franson most nights.

Maple Leafs' Gardiner Notches Two Points

News: Jake Gardiner scored a goal and added an assist versus the Coyotes on Monday.
Analysis: This gives Jake Gardiner four goals and 16 points. He has skill, but has also been a healthy scratch at times this season, so he's not exactly established.

Leafs' Gardiner Healthy Scratched

News: Jake Gardiner will be a healthy scratch for Thursday's game against the Hurricanes, Jonas Siegel of TSN 1050 reports.
Analysis: Jake Gardiner will watch from the press box as a healthy scratch for the second time this season. Carl Gunnarsson will take Gardiner's place in the lineup as he returns from an elbow injury.
