Canes' Murphy Reassigned To AHL

News: Ryan Murphy was reassigned to AHL Charlotte on Wednesday.
Analysis: Ryan Murphy proved his versatility last week, filling in at forward with Nathan Gerbe (lower body) and Patrick Dywer (lower body) banged up, but with both Gerbe and Dwyer seemingly close to returning and the team's defenseman relatively healthy, Murphy was deemed expendable. The 21-year-old Murphy has chipped in one assist and two penalty minutes in six game with the Hurricanes this season.

Canes' Defenseman Murphy Filling In At Forward

News: Ryan Murphy filled in at forward during Tuesday's 3-1 loss to Winnipeg, playing on the Cane's fourth line alongside Patrick Brown and Brad Malone. He saw ice time of 12:42 and recorded zero points along with a minus-1 rating.
Analysis: This comes as no surprise, as it's been widely reported that Ryan Murphy has spent at least one practice during the past couple of weeks playing a forward role. For now, the injury-riddled Canes seem content to patch up their lineup with whoever they have on hand, including an occasional defenseman like Murphy, rather than recalling forward help from the minors. Either way, this does nothing for Murphy's fantasy value, as he is used to seeing upwards of 20 minutes per night on the blue line. As a fourth-line forward, however, he will realistically only see 10-12 minutes per night at best.

Hurricanes' Murphy To Sit Out Friday

News: Ryan Murphy will be a healthy scratch for Friday's season opener against the Islanders, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: While the youngster will sit out the opener, coach Bill Peters said Ryan Murphy could enter the lineup Saturday, when the two teams will move their matchup to Long Island. He'd likely replace one of the team's veterans on the blue line, with Jay Harrison or Tim Gleason representing the most likely candidates to sit out.

Canes' Defenseman Murphy Seeing Time At Forward

News: Ryan Murphy filled in at forward at Tuesday's practice, and could see time there during Friday's season opener against the Islanders, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: With regular forwards Jordan Staal (broken leg) and Jeff Skinner (concussion) both on the shelf for the foreseeable future, the Canes are short on healthy bodies, and may opt to pull Ryan Murphy off the blue line and start him as a forward rather than call someone up from the minors. Murphy, whose specialty is manning the power play, would probably line up on one of the Canes' checking lines; however, if he spends enough time at forward he could eventually qualify for dual eligibility in some fantasy formats, which would give his overall value a boost. Keep an eye on this situation as it progresses, and don't be afraid to take a flyer on Murphy for those of you in deeper leagues.

Rookie Murphy Paces 'Canes To Win Over Isles

News: Ryan Murphy registered a goal and an assist - both on the power play - during Wednesday's 4-2 preseason win over the Islanders.
Analysis: Last season, Ryan Murphy played in all but eight of the Canes' first 47 games and was looking like he would be a regular member of the lineup. However, he subsequently suffered an upper-body injury in January, and spent most of the remainder of the season at AHL Charlotte. This season, Murphy is being given another shot at cracking the roster but will face stiff competition for a spot on the team's third defensive pairing. If he can keep putting up points in the preseason while still being defensively responsible in his own zone, he has a pretty good shot at making the team. As Tuesday's results will attest, Murphy is very adept with the man advantage and should see a boatload of minutes on the power play should he win himself a roster spot.

Hurricanes Return Murphy To Minors

News: Ryan Murphy was reassigned to AHL Charlotte on Thursday.
Analysis: The Hurricanes will let Ryan Murphy finish out the campaign at Charlotte with only three games remaining on the NHL schedule. Mike Komisarek will take his spot on defense.

Hurricanes Send Murphy To AHL

News: The Hurricanes have assigned Ryan Murphy to AHL Charlotte, the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Ryan Murphy, who has recorded 12 points in 46 games with the big club to date, should be back with Carolina before long. With Charlotte this season, the promising young blueliner has recorded 18 points in 16 AHL games.

Hurricanes Will Use Murphy On Tuesday

News: Ryan Murphy (upper body) will be back in the lineup Tuesday against the Islanders.
Analysis: After Ryan Murphy made it through Monday's practice with no complications, coach Kirk Muller declared afterward that the defenseman wouldn't miss any further action. Look for him to replace Mike Komisarek in Tuesday's lineup.

Hurricanes' Murphy Practices Monday

News: Ryan Murphy (upper body) returned to practice Monday, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: Ryan Murphy has missed the last two games with the injury, but his participation in practice would seem to bode well for his availability Tuesday against the Islanders. Expect an update on his status following Tuesday's morning skate.

Canes' Murphy Leaves With Injury

News: Ryan Murphy left Tuesday's game vs. the Blue Jackets with an upper-body injury.
Analysis: The Hurricanes ruled him out of the game after the conclusion of the first period. Should Ryan Murphy be unavailable for the team's next game Friday in Chicago, Mike Komisarek would likely enter the lineup in his stead.

Hurricanes Recall Murphy

News: Ryan Murphy was recalled from AHL Charlotte on Thursday, NHL.com reports.
Analysis: Justin Faulk's upper-body injury opens the door for Ryan Murphy to join the lineup for at least a handful of games. As one of the team's most promising young players, there would seem to be a good chance he sticks with the parent club the rest of the way. With the Hurricanes are on the periphery of the playoff race at the moment, it may make sense for coach Kirk Muller to let Murphy gain some experience in preparation for a full-time role on defense in 2014-15. Murphy provided two goals and nine assists in his 39 games with the Hurricanes earlier this season.

Hurricanes Assign Murphy To AHL Charlotte

News: The Hurricanes assigned Ryan Murphy to AHL Charlotte on Friday.
Analysis: Ryan Murphy has not played since Jan. 13, so the Hurricanes decided to send him down so that he could get in some game action during next month's Olympic break.

Canes' Murphy Has First Multi-Point Game Of Career

News: Ryan Murphy recorded his first multi-point game of his career on Thursday, picking up two assists to go alongside a career-high plus-3 rating in an overtime win over Washington.
Analysis: Ryan Murphy assisted on Jeff Skinner's game-tying goal late in the second period before setting up Skinner again in overtime on an odd-man rush. The 20-year-old Murphy now has 11 points in 35 games this season. He continues to improve every game and is well on his way to becoming a future gem in fantasy hockey.

Canes' Murphy Benched

News: Ryan Murphy was a healthy scratch for the Hurricanes' 5-2 loss to Toronto on Sunday.
Analysis: Ryan Murphy had just two assists in his previous 15 games along with a combined minus-9 rating, so coach Kirk Muller probably felt it was time to give the youngster some rest. Murphy projects to be a solid fantasy contributor some day, but he's still learning the ropes. His fantasy value lies more in keeper formats at this point.

Canes' Rookie Murphy Developing At Steady Pace

News: Despite regularly playing over 20 minutes per night, coach Kirk Muller says there are still some things Ryan Murphy needs to work on, reports the Raleigh News & Observer. "When he simplifies his game and uses his skill he's effective," Muller said. "But when he tries to do too much and stays out too long and different things that most guys in junior do, we've still got to break him of that," Muller said Wednesday.
Analysis: At just 20 years old and playing his first full NHL season, Ryan Murphy is still a work in progress. However, with nine points through 30 games thus far, he should finish around the 25-point mark at his current pace. He's currently playing on the Cane's second defensive pairing alongside Ron Hainsey and averages almost three minutes of power play time per night, so he does offer some fantasy value for those of you in deeper formats.

Murphy On Carolina Scoresheet Again

News: Ryan Murphy assisted on one of Carolina's two goals in Friday's shootout win over Anaheim, giving him two points over the last three games.
Analysis: Ryan Murphy is going to see plenty of offensive opportunities given the way he plays the game and the fact that he's seeing 3:07 on the power play. He has a solid stat line of seven points through 18 games with three power-play points. Murphy is still quite young and his value remains higher in keeper leagues. Don't be surprised to see a few stretches of futility from the youngster, but he is talented.

Canes' Murphy Nets Goal In Loss To Wild

News: Ryan Murphy broke a seven-game pointless drought by scoring his second goal of the season during Saturday's 3-2 shootout loss to Minnesota.
Analysis: Ryan Murphy continues to log regular minutes on the Canes' third defensive pairing alongside Jay Harrison, and he's also seeing first-line power-play duty to boot. Unfortunately, the 'Canes are one of the NHL's lowest-scoring teams at the moment, ranking 27th in the league with just 1.88 goals per game, so unless Murphy and his teammates find a way to up their offensive attack, his fantasy value in most formats will remain somewhat limited.

Canes' Murphy Starting To Heat Up

News: Ryan Murphy has three points in his last four games, including his first official NHL goal which he scored Thursday against the Maple Leafs.
Analysis: Ryan Murphy's ice time has been all over the map, from 12:12 on Oct. 10 against the Capitals, to 25:01 two games later against Chicago. However, what has been consistent is his presence on the power play, as he's averaging over three minutes per game. As long as Murphy continues to play a top-four role for the Canes, his offensive production should continue. If he remains undrafted in your league, he represents good value as a waiver wire pickup in most fantasy formats.

Canes' Ryan Murphy Closer To Sticking In NHL

News: Despite a brief demotion to AHL Charlotte, Ryan Murphy was actually awarded a roster spot out of training camp this season, according to the Raleigh News & Observer. "You could tell he really wanted to make the team," coach Kirk Muller said. "It wasn't like he was nonchalant about it or 'Will it be given to me?' He earned it."
Analysis: In the three games Ryan Murphy has played so far, he has an assist and is averaging over 17 minutes of ice time, including 3:47 on the power play. At the moment, it does not appear the Canes have any plans on sending him back to the minors, although that could change once the injured Tim Gleason returns from a concussion. For now, however, Muller seems intent on keeping him in the lineup. "He's a special player," Muller said. "He knows the game well for his age. He's got the skill level. He can run a power play. It's just him getting more comfortable."

Hurricanes Recall Murphy

News: Ryan Murphy was recalled from AHL Charlotte by the Hurricanes on Tuesday.
Analysis: Ryan Murphy was just sent down Monday when rosters were finalized, likely as a paper move to shuffle roster spots. He's a promising offensive defense prospect for the Hurricanes, having racked up 181 points in 166 games over his last three seasons with the OHL's Kitchener Rangers.

Canes' Send Murphy To AHL

News: Ryan Murphy was assigned to AHL Charlotte by the Hurricanes on Monday.
Analysis: Ryan Murphy played in four games last season for the Hurricanes after spending the majority of the season playing in juniors. In 54 games with the OHL's Kitchener Rangers, he had 10 goals and 38 assists. A highly regarded defensive prospect for the Hurricanes, Murphy will continue to develop in the minors for now.

Hurricanes Send Murphy To Juniors

News: The Hurricanes have assigned Ryan Murphy to OHL Kitchener, the team's official site reports.
Analysis: The 19-year-old saw four games of NHL action in his first stint with Carolina, recording two penalty minutes. Ryan Murphy has long-term upside as a puck-mover, but he'll head back to the juniors now that the big club's veteran blueliners are getting healthier.

Canes' Murphy Struggles With Big Ice Time

News: Ryan Murphy was minus-3 in 25:27 of ice time in Saturday's loss to the Lightning.
Analysis: It's just his second game of the season on an emergency call-up. He's an offensive wizard, but a defensive liability right now and will have to work hard to improve the latter to be considered more than a power-play specialist.

Murphy Debuts For 'Canes

News: Ryan Murphy skated 23:51 in his NHL debut Thursday against Winnipeg, blocking two shots and going minus-1 with two shots on goal in the loss.
Analysis: It's impressive simply that the 19-year-old defenseman, the 12th overall pick in 2011, was able to step into the NHL and play almost 24 minutes on Day 1. Of some concern to his fantasy owners is a fall in Ryan Murphy's scoring rate over the last two junior seasons, but he remains one of the better offensive defense prospects in the game.

Hurricanes Recall Murphy

News: The Hurricanes have recalled Ryan Murphy from OHL Kitchener on an emergency basis, the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Ryan Murphy, who has 39 points in 46 OHL games to date, will bolster the Hurricanes' banged-up blue line for the time being. The smallish blueliner has long-term upside as a puck mover, but whether he makes much of a splash in his initial NHL entry hinges on how much -- if any -- power-play time he sees.
