News: Ryan Murphy will play Tuesday against the Red Wings, Chantel McCabe of FOX Sports Carolinas reports.

Canes' Murphy Gets Assist, Goes Plus-2 Saturday

News: Ryan Murphy picked up an assist and went plus-2 in Saturday's win over the Devils.
Analysis: Ryan Murphy has begun to carve out some utility in very deep formats lately, providing two goals, an assist, and six shots on goal over his last four games. He'll need to keep that run of scoring going to enjoy broader fantasy appeal, but if nothing else, he's making a strong case for a top-four spot on defense with the Hurricanes in 2015-16-.

Canes' Murphy Nets Power-Play Goal

News: Ryan Murphy scored his second goal of the season in Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Rangers. It came on the power play.
Analysis: Both of his goals have come on the power play. The young defender does have 10 points in 27 games this season and has improved his point-per-game pace over last season. But we'd like to see more from this first-round pick. We're not ready to say #overdraft just yet, but it has crossed our minds.

Hurricanes' Murphy Set To Return

News: Ryan Murphy (illness) appears on track to play Tuesday against Ottawa, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: Per the report, it sounds like Ryan Murphy isn't quite 100 percent, but at this stage it looks as though the blueliner is expected back Tuesday following a two-game absence.

Hurricanes' Murphy Still Out

News: Ryan Murphy (illness) will miss Sunday's game against the Blue Jackets.
Analysis: Ryan Murphy, who missed Saturday's game against the Panthers, thus slots in the day-to-day category in advance of Tuesday's game against the Senators.

Canes' Murphy Out With Illness Saturday

News: Ryan Murphy will miss Saturday's game against the Panthers with an illness.
Analysis: Ryan Murphy returned from injured reserve last week and immediately made an impact in his first three games, putting five shots on net and picking up two power-play assists. The illness isn't expected to be a long-term concern, so Murphy should have the inside track to a regular lineup spot once he's healthy again. He hasn't been ruled out from playing in Sunday's game against the Blue Jackets.

Canes' Murphy Logs Assist In Shootout Loss

News: Ryan Murphy recorded an assist in Tuesday's eventual 4-3 SO loss to the Blue Jackets.
Analysis: Ryan Murphy has assists in consecutive games since his March 6 activation from injured reserve after sustaining a leg injury. As the 12th overall pick in the 2011 NHL entry draft, there is long-term upside with Murphy but for now, he's best suited for dynasty leagues.

Canes' Murphy (Leg) Activated From IR

News: Ryan Murphy (leg) was activated from injured reserve Friday, the Hurricanes' official website reports.
Analysis: Ryan Murphy, who last played in a game Feb. 4, should be back in the lineup for Friday's matchup with the Wild. The news comes as a bit of a surprise, given that Hurricanes coach Bill Peters said Thursday that Murphy's return date was uncertain. The 21-year-old defenseman has seven points (one goal) and a minus-six rating through 21 appearances this season.

Return Date Still Uncertain For Canes' Murphy

News: Coach Bill Peters said Thursday that Ryan Murphy (leg) is still facing an uncertain return date.
Analysis: The Hurricanes were expected to have a clearer idea of Ryan Murphy's timetable by this point in the week, but it appears they weren't able to gain the clarity they were looking for. Peters did mention that the Hurricanes won't rush Murphy back into action until they're confident he can play on a regular basis, so the blueliner may need to log multiple days of practices in a row before he's activated from IR.

Canes' Murphy Gets Back On Ice

News: Ryan Murphy (leg) participated in the Hurricanes' Monday morning skate, Chantel McCabe of FOX Sports Carolinas reports.
Analysis: Ryan Murphy's recovery from the leg injury recently hit a roadblock, but it appears he's now back on course. Coach Bill Peters said that the club likely won't have a good estimate for Murphy's return until Wednesday.

Hurricanes' Murphy Suffers Slight Setback

Canes' Murphy Gets On Ice Friday

News: Ryan Murphy (leg) took shots on the ice prior to Friday's morning skate, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: Ryan Murphy isn't expected to return to action for at least another two weeks, so his activity on the ice was likely just an attempt to stay conditioned while he continues to recover from the leg injury. The Hurricanes haven't provided an indication of when Murphy might be able to start practicing with the team again.

Canes' Murphy Out Four Weeks With Leg injury

News: Ryan Murphy has been ruled out four weeks with a leg injury and was placed on injured reserve Tuesday, Chantel McCabe of FOX Sports Carolinas reports.
Analysis: Ryan Murphy went in for MRI on Monday, which confirmed the grim diagnosis. Fortunately for the blueliner, who suffered the injury last Thursday against the Coyotes, he will not require surgery. The 21-year-old should be able to return during the final few weeks of the season, but it probably makes sense for those who own him in single-season leagues to cut bait in pursuit of a healthier option. Murphy had inched his way onto the fantasy radar by picking up his offensive production since rejoining the Hurricanes out of the All-Star break, having tallied a goal, an assist and 16 shot attempts over his last five games.

Canes' Murphy (Lower Body) Won't Play Thurday

News: Coach Bill Peters indicated Ryan Murphy (lower body) won't play Thursday against the Ducks, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: Ryan Murphy's MRI results haven't returned yet apparently, which will apparently determine whether he will be day-to-day or week-to-week. Either way, he has already been ruled out for Thursday's contest, making his next possible return date Saturday against the Wild.

MRI On Tap For Hurricanes' Murphy

News: Ryan Murphy (lower body) will undergo an MRI on Monday.
Analysis: The Hurricanes are still listing Ryan Murphy as day-to-day, so the MRI may only be for precautionary purposes. He'll sit out a second straight game Saturday against the Sharks.

Canes' Murphy Set To Miss Saturday's Game

News: Ryan Murphy (lower body) will not play Saturday against the Sharks.
Analysis: Ryan Murphy was unable to resume skating Saturday morning after exiting Thursday's game against the Coyotes. He'll be replaced in the lineup by Brett Bellemore.

Canes' Murphy Done With Lower-Body Injury

News: Ryan Murphy will not return to Thursday's game against the Coyotes due to a lower-body injury.
Analysis: Ryan Murphy appeared to twist his knee after taking a high stick, and had to be taken off the ice. The severity of the injury is a bit unclear at this point, but he will miss the remainder of Thursday's tilt at a minimum. The team should provide an update on his status at some point before their next game Saturday.

Canes' Murphy Finds Net In Loss

News: Ryan Murphy notched a power-play goal in Friday's shootout loss to the Blues.
Analysis: The goal was Ryan Murphy's first goal of the season. While his season point totals don't jump off the page, the 21-year-old's offensive trends do offer some encouragement. He enjoyed a three-game assist streak earlier this month and has attempted two or more shots in each of his last four contests.

Hurricanes Recall Murphy

News: Ryan Murphy has been recalled from AHL Charlotte, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: Ryan Murphy, who has recorded five assists in 16 games with the Hurricanes, returns to the big club after a minor league stint during the NHL All-Star break that was capped by a three-assist effort in Monday's AHL All-Star Classic.

Canes' Murphy Assigned To AHL

News: The Hurricanes have assigned Ryan Murphy to AHL Charlotte, the team's official site reports,
Analysis: Since his recall on Dec. 30, the 21-year-old Ryan Murphy had recorded four assists in 10 games for Carolina, but he'll head to the AHL for now to see some ice time, with the big club not in action again until Jan. 27.

Canes' Murphy: Assists In Three Straight

News: Ryan Murphy chipped in an assist and three shots on goal in Tuesday's shootout win over the Avalanche.
Analysis: Ryan Murphy has picked up assists in three straight games, and has seen his minutes rise in accordance. He's currently holding down a second-pairing role and should be a lineup mainstay until his production starts to slow. It's probably too early to invest much into Murphy in most formats, but his pedigree as a former first-round pick certainly makes him a name worth tracking.

Canes' Murphy Notches First Points Since Recall

News: Ryan Murphy handed out two assists, went plus-2 and gathered two PIM in Thursday's win over Buffalo.
Analysis: He'd gone without a point in four games since being recalled from AHL Charlotte, but the 12th overall pick in 2011 possesses strong two-way potential and has shown terrific puck-moving ability at all levels.

Hurricanes Recall Murphy From AHL

News: Ryan Murphy was recalled from AHL Charlotte on Tuesday.
Analysis: The Hurricanes moved John-Michael Liles (illness) to IR in a corresponding move, allowing Ryan Murphy to join the club as a seventh defenseman. The 21-year-old Murphy was tied for Charlotte's team scoring lead with 17 points, and could see regular duty while he remains with the parent club.

Canes' Murphy Reassigned To AHL

News: Ryan Murphy was reassigned to AHL Charlotte on Wednesday.
Analysis: Ryan Murphy proved his versatility last week, filling in at forward with Nathan Gerbe (lower body) and Patrick Dywer (lower body) banged up, but with both Gerbe and Dwyer seemingly close to returning and the team's defenseman relatively healthy, Murphy was deemed expendable. The 21-year-old Murphy has chipped in one assist and two penalty minutes in six game with the Hurricanes this season.

Canes' Defenseman Murphy Filling In At Forward

News: Ryan Murphy filled in at forward during Tuesday's 3-1 loss to Winnipeg, playing on the Cane's fourth line alongside Patrick Brown and Brad Malone. He saw ice time of 12:42 and recorded zero points along with a minus-1 rating.
Analysis: This comes as no surprise, as it's been widely reported that Ryan Murphy has spent at least one practice during the past couple of weeks playing a forward role. For now, the injury-riddled Canes seem content to patch up their lineup with whoever they have on hand, including an occasional defenseman like Murphy, rather than recalling forward help from the minors. Either way, this does nothing for Murphy's fantasy value, as he is used to seeing upwards of 20 minutes per night on the blue line. As a fourth-line forward, however, he will realistically only see 10-12 minutes per night at best.
