Caps Demote Grubauer

News: Philipp Grubauer was returned to AHL Hershey on Thursday, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: With Jaroslav Halak set to join the Capitals for Thursday's game vs. the Bruins after he was acquired Wednesday from the Sabres, Philipp Grubauer will return to the minors to create space on the roster for him. Grubauer actually saw action as the backup Wednesday against the Flyers after Braden Holtby was beaten for four goals by the midpoint of the second period. Grubauer ended up saving 10 of the 11 shot attempts he faced in his 27:32 of ice time.

Capitals Recall Grubauer

News: Philipp Grubauer was recalled from AHL Hershey on Wednesday.
Analysis: It's probably just a one-day appointment for Philipp Grubauer, who will back up Braden Holtby for Wednesday's game against the Flyers. The Capitals acquired Jaroslav Halak from the Sabres just before the trade deadline, and will have him share goalie duties with Holtby as soon as he arrives in Washington.

Caps Send Grubauer To AHL On Monday

News: Philipp Grubauer was reassigned to AHL Hershey by the Capitals on Monday.
Analysis: Philipp Grubauer had a decent run in net in early December, but was smoked in his last two starts and was pulled from Sunday's appearance against the Rangers. The Capitals have decided they can't wait for him to work through the slump in the NHL and would rather have him work on it in the AHL.

Capitals' Grubauer Pulled Against Rangers

News: Philipp Grubauer gave up three goals on eight shots in a loss to the Rangers on Sunday. He played 17:49 before being pulled.
Analysis: Philipp Grubauer has lost four games in a row, and in his last two games he has let in three goals and not played even half a game. However, he still has a .926 save percentage, which is eighth best in the NHL.

Capitals Start Grubauer On Sunday

News: Philipp Grubauer will start in goal for the Capitals when they face the Rangers on Sunday, Mike Vogel of washingtoncapitals.com reports.
Analysis: While Philipp Grubauer has lost his last three starts, he's actually played well, giving up just five goals in total and losing two of the games via shootout. He is 6-3-5 on the season with a solid 2.22 GAA and .931 save percentage.

Rough Night For Caps, Grubauer

News: Philipp Grubauer allowed three goals on 14 shots in Friday's 5-1 loss to Columbus, resulting in him being pulled early in the second period.
Analysis: Grubaber had been playing well in his last two starts, although both were overtime or shootout losses where he allowed just one goal. The crease in Washington is getting crowded with Braden Holtby back from injury and Michal Neuvirth in the picture at times. Efforts like Friday's won't aid in Philipp Grubauer's efforts to see more starts, but, with the way the Caps' defense is going, another goalie could falter, reopening the door for Grubauer.

Capitals' Grubauer To Start Against Columbus

News: Philipp Grubauer will be the starting goaltender for the Capitals in Friday night's game against Columbus,Monumental Network's Mike Vogel reports"
Analysis: Philipp Grubauer continues to carry a heavy workload for the Capitals. He faces a hot Columbus team that has scored three or more goals in each of its last four games. Even so, the Blue Jackets have been streaky this season, and Grubauer has solid peripheral stats on the season (2.06 GAA, .936 save percentage), so he's worth playing despite the Capitals recent troubles.

Capitals' Grubauer Gets The Nod Friday

News: Philipp Grubauer will be between the pipes for Friday's game against the Blue Jackets, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Philipp Grubauer will return to the ice after giving way to Michael Neuvirth in the Capitals' last game Wednesday. Grubauer has lost each of his last two starts, but he has been the victim of some bad luck, giving up a total of only two goals in those game. He will need to be sharp again Friday to take down a Columbus squad that has won four straight.

Caps' Grubauer Sharp In Shootout Loss

News: Philipp Grubauer stopped 28 of 29 shots Tuesday against the Sharks, but ended up with a shootout loss.
Analysis: That's the second straight shootout loss for Philipp Grubauer and his fourth overtime loss in the last six games. However, he's played quite well in that span, posting save marks well over .900 in six of his last seven contests.

Caps' Grubauer Expected To Start Tuesday

News: Philipp Grubauer is expected to start in goal Tuesday against the Sharks, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.

Capitals' Grubauer Stops 30 In Loss

News: Philipp Grubauer made 30 saves on 31 shots in a shootout loss to the Sabres on Sunday.

Caps' Grubauer Starting Sunday

News: Philipp Grubauer will start in goal Sunday against the Sabres, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Philipp Grubauer will step back between the pipes after yielding a start to Michal Neuvirth on Friday. Two weeks ago, the Sabres handed Grubauer a shootout loss, though Grubauer stopped 16-of-17 shots in that contest and will have the home crowd behind him this time around.

Caps' Grubauer Snaps Short Skid

News: Philipp Grubauer stopped 33 of 36 shots Thursday in a win over the Lightning, snapping a three-game losing streak.
Analysis: He hadn't played terribly by any means during that three-game skid, giving up a total of six goals and taking two overtime losses while receiving minimal offensive support. Braden Holtby has been an unmitigated disaster over the last month, which gives Philipp Grubauer room to not have to be perfect all the time. The result has been a run of very steady play from the German rookie.

Caps Go With Grubauer On Thursday

News: Philipp Grubauer will get the start Thursday against the Lightning.
Analysis: Look for coach Adam Oates to split the netminding duty the next two days for the Capitals, with Philipp Grubauer drawing the nod Thursday, while Braden Holtby is expected to start Friday against the Maple Leafs. Grubauer has clearly been the better performer of the two of late, carrying a 5-2-3 record and 2.20 GAA over 11 appearances since his Nov. 30 recall from the AHL.

Analysis: Philipp Grubauer has started five straight games for the Capitals, surrendering only 12 goals in that span. He sports a solid .932 save percentage on the season to go alongside a 5-2-3 record.

News: Philipp Grubauer will start in goal Thursday against the Hurricanes, the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: The Caps will turn to Philipp Grubauer for a fifth consecutive start, and ninth in the team's last 12 games, when they host Carolina on Thursday. Grubauer has come out on the losing end in his last two turns, but he allowed a combined three goals in those losses.

Capitals' Grubauer To Start Again Thursday

News: Philipp Grubauer is on track to start Thursday's game against the Hurricanes, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Philipp Grubauer was the first goalie off the ice following Thursday's morning skate, which signifies that he will be between the pipes Thursday night. Grubauer, who posted a 2.02 GAA and .938 save mark in December, will look to keep his stellar play going against a Carolina team that has been victorious just twice in its last 10 games.

Capitals' Grubauer Stops 35 In Loss

News: Philipp Grubauer made 35 saves on 37 shots in a loss to the Senators on Monday.
Analysis: Philipp Grubauer has started three games in a row, and he has continued his strong play. Washington has three goalies right now, so something has to give. Expect Grubauer to keep getting some starts in some capacity.

Caps' Grubauer In Goal Monday

News: Philipp Grubauer will start in net Monday against the Senators, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: The young Philipp Grubauer has been a very serviceable backup in goal for the Capitals this season. He is 5-1-2 with a 2.02 GAA and .937 save percentage this season over nine games. He has been stopping shots efficiently in net recently and will and faces a solid matchup Monday against the Senators.

Capitals' Grubauer Lets In One In Loss

News: Philipp Grubauer made 16 saves on 17 shots but still took the shootout loss against the Sabres on Sunday.
Analysis: Obviously, this lost can't really be pinned on Philipp Grubauer. He's only appeared in nine games, but he has a .937 save percentage and 2.02 GAA so far.

Caps' Grubauer To Start Sunday

News: Philipp Grubauer will start in goal Sunday against the Sabres.
Analysis: Philipp Grubauer has been outstanding on the road to this point (1.62 GAA) and will look to keep it going Sunday against a Sabres team averaging just 1.71 goals per game this season, easily the worst in the league.

Caps' Grubauer Reels Off Fifth Win

News: Philipp Grubauer turned away 38 of 40 shots to win by a 3-2 count Friday against the Capitals.
Analysis: The goalie was magnificent in a battle of the backups Friday, outdueling Cam Talbot to register his fifth win of the season. Much like Talbot, Philipp Grubauer probably isn't on track to permanently overtake No. 1 goalie duties, but until he starts cooling down, he'll continue to steal starts from Braden Holtby.

Capitals' Grubauer Gets The Nod Again Friday

News: Philipp Grubauer will be in goal for Friday's game against the Rangers, Mike Vogel of the Capitals' website reports.
Analysis: Philipp Grubauer will start Friday for the sixth time in nine games as head coach Adam Oates rides the hot hand. Grubauer has been stellar in December, posting a 2.20 GAA and .934 SV%, and he will have a nice matchup Friday night against a Rangers squad that is 27th in the league with 2.26 goals per game.

Caps Turn To Grubauer On Monday

News: Philipp Grubauer will be in the net Monday against the Ducks, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: After Braden Holtby was blasted for five goals Saturday for his second consecutive outing, Philipp Grubauer will make his third start in five games. Though Holtby is still viewed as the top goalie for the Caps, the netminders could continue to alternate turns while Grubauer's playing well.
