Caps' Grubauer Makes 18 Saves In Win

News: Philipp Grubauer stopped 18 of 21 shots in Friday's Game 2 win over the Islanders.
Analysis: With Braden Holtby out with an illness, Philipp Grubauer got a chance to lead the Capitals to victory in front of the home crowd. While it's unlikely the 23-year-old, who played just one full regular-season game, sees any more playoff action, it's good to know the Capitals have a reliable option if elite starter Holtby finds himself dealing with an illness again.

Caps' Grubauer Will Start Friday

News: Philipp Grubauer will get the nod on Friday for Game 2 of Washington's playoff series against the Islanders.
Analysis: With Braden Holtby out with an illness, Friday's game against the Islanders will serve as Philipp Grubauer's NHL playoff debut. The 23-year-old netminder will likely be battling some nerves, as he's only started one game for the Caps this season. In that game he allowed two goals on 25 shots.

Caps Recall Grubauer From AHL Hershey

News: Philipp Grubauer was recalled from AHL Hershey on Friday, Alex Prewitt of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Philipp Grubauer was brought aboard merely to provide insurance in case Braden Holtby (illness) is somehow unable to play, despite the organization feeling confident that he will indeed suit up for Friday's game. In the likely event that Holtby plays, Grubauer would probably be scratched while Justin Peters serves as Holtby's backup.

Caps Send Grubauer Back To Minors

News: The Capitals announced on Tuesday that they have sent Philipp Grubauer back to AHL Hershey.
Analysis: Recalled on an emergency basis to back up goaltender Braden Holtby while Justin Peters (lower body) was unavailable, Philipp Grubauer was sent back to AHL Hershey with Peters' return imminent. Grubauer has posted a 23-14-4 record with six shutouts, a 2.20 GAA, and a .921 save percentage in 41 games with Hershey this season.

Caps Recall Grubauer

News: The Capitals recalled Philipp Grubauer from AHL Hershey on Sunday, the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Philipp Grubauer, who has appeared in one game for the Caps this season, rejoins the big club to work behind Braden Holtby, with fellow goalie Justin Peters dealing with a lower body injury.

Capitals Reassign Grubauer After Win

News: Philipp Grubauer was reassigned to AHL Hershey on Saturday morning.
Analysis: Philipp Grubauer's call-up amounted to just one spot start, as coach Barry Trotz turned to the 23-year-old Friday night against the Ducks in an effort to rest Braden Holtby. Grubauer rewarded the Capitals with a steady performance in net, stopping 23 of 25 shots in regulation and overtime before besting Ducks goalie Ilya Bryzgalov in the shootout. While his demotion to the minors allows Justin Peters to reclaim the top backup role behind Holtby, Grubauer would likely be called upon as the Capitals' primary starter if Holtby should miss extended time due to injury down the road.

Capitals' Grubauer Makes 23 Saves In Win

News: Philipp Grubauer made 23 saves on 25 shots for his first win of the season Friday against the Ducks.
Analysis: While Philipp Grubauer will now get sent back down to AHL Hershey, he certainly didn't hurt his case to steal the backup job from Justin Peters, who has struggled this season, managing just two wins in nine games played. If Grubauer does return to the Capitals' crease at some point, he's proven in the past that he can be counted on in fantasy, even if it's just for a spot start.

Caps Grubauer To Start Friday

News: Philipp Grubauer will start in net Friday against the Ducks.
Analysis: Philipp Grubauer will receive the start Friday over the struggling Jason Peters, but then will be returned to AHL Hershey after the game. The 23-year-old has seen a few short stints with the Capitals over the past couple seasons, and posted a 2.38 GAA and .925 save percentage over 17 games last season. The youngster has been good at AHL Herhsey this season is well, carrying a 16-9-4 record with a 2.03 GA and .924 save percentage over 29 games with the club.

Capitals' Grubauer Will Return To AHL After Friday

News: Philipp Grubauer will likely start Friday's game against the Ducks, but will return to AHL Hershey afterwards, Alex Prewitt of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: The Capitals are playing the second game of a back-to-back, and as such, Philipp Grubauer is expected to start over Justin Peters on Friday, who has struggled in net this season as Braden Holtby's primary backup. Holtby will likely get the start between the pipes Sunday against the Flyers, making Grubauer's presence on the team's active roster unnecessary.

Capitals' Grubauer Likely Starting Friday

News: Philipp Grubauer will likely start Friday's game against the Ducks, but he is not expected to stay in the NHL for long, Tim Leone of the PA Media Group reports.
Analysis: With the Capitals playing the second game of a back-to-back, Philipp Grubauer is expected to start over Justin Peters, who has struggled to a 2-5-1 record while working as Braden Holtby's backup this season. Holtby figures to return to the crease for Sunday's game against the Flyers.

Capitals Recall Grubauer On Friday

News: Philipp Grubauer was recalled from AHL Hershey on Friday.
Analysis: With the Capitals playing the second half of a back-to-back set Friday against the Ducks, Philipp Grubauer's recall likely indicates he will get the start over backup goalie Justin Peters while usual starter Braden Holtby rests. The 23-year-old hasn't seen any time with the parent club this season, but made 19 appearances with the Capitals over the previous two years, going 6-6-5 with a 2.48 GAA and .924 save percentage. He's excelled at Hershey throughout the 2014-15 campaign and looks like one of the better goalie prospects in the AHL, but his stint with the Capitals is expected to be short-lived. It seems likely that Grubauer will be returned to the minors after the weekend, as teams aren't normally too keen on carrying three goalies.

Caps' Grubauer Headed To AHL Hershey

News: The Capitals have sent Philipp Grubauer back to AHL Hershey, according to a team press release.
Analysis: With the signing of Justin Peters during free agency, the plan all along was to let Philipp Grubauer develop in the AHL for the season, and due to a shaky showing in preseason, that plan has not changed. Keep an eye on Grubauer should injuries affect Capitals' goaltenders, but he doesn't appear to have much value in single season leagues at this time. The team is poised to turn to Braden Holtby as a workhorse starting goaltender in 2014-15 with Peters spelling him on occasion.

Caps Demote Grubauer

News: Philipp Grubauer was returned to AHL Hershey on Thursday, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: With Jaroslav Halak set to join the Capitals for Thursday's game vs. the Bruins after he was acquired Wednesday from the Sabres, Philipp Grubauer will return to the minors to create space on the roster for him. Grubauer actually saw action as the backup Wednesday against the Flyers after Braden Holtby was beaten for four goals by the midpoint of the second period. Grubauer ended up saving 10 of the 11 shot attempts he faced in his 27:32 of ice time.

Capitals Recall Grubauer

News: Philipp Grubauer was recalled from AHL Hershey on Wednesday.
Analysis: It's probably just a one-day appointment for Philipp Grubauer, who will back up Braden Holtby for Wednesday's game against the Flyers. The Capitals acquired Jaroslav Halak from the Sabres just before the trade deadline, and will have him share goalie duties with Holtby as soon as he arrives in Washington.

Caps Send Grubauer To AHL On Monday

News: Philipp Grubauer was reassigned to AHL Hershey by the Capitals on Monday.
Analysis: Philipp Grubauer had a decent run in net in early December, but was smoked in his last two starts and was pulled from Sunday's appearance against the Rangers. The Capitals have decided they can't wait for him to work through the slump in the NHL and would rather have him work on it in the AHL.

Capitals' Grubauer Pulled Against Rangers

News: Philipp Grubauer gave up three goals on eight shots in a loss to the Rangers on Sunday. He played 17:49 before being pulled.
Analysis: Philipp Grubauer has lost four games in a row, and in his last two games he has let in three goals and not played even half a game. However, he still has a .926 save percentage, which is eighth best in the NHL.

Capitals Start Grubauer On Sunday

News: Philipp Grubauer will start in goal for the Capitals when they face the Rangers on Sunday, Mike Vogel of washingtoncapitals.com reports.
Analysis: While Philipp Grubauer has lost his last three starts, he's actually played well, giving up just five goals in total and losing two of the games via shootout. He is 6-3-5 on the season with a solid 2.22 GAA and .931 save percentage.

Rough Night For Caps, Grubauer

News: Philipp Grubauer allowed three goals on 14 shots in Friday's 5-1 loss to Columbus, resulting in him being pulled early in the second period.
Analysis: Grubaber had been playing well in his last two starts, although both were overtime or shootout losses where he allowed just one goal. The crease in Washington is getting crowded with Braden Holtby back from injury and Michal Neuvirth in the picture at times. Efforts like Friday's won't aid in Philipp Grubauer's efforts to see more starts, but, with the way the Caps' defense is going, another goalie could falter, reopening the door for Grubauer.

Capitals' Grubauer To Start Against Columbus

News: Philipp Grubauer will be the starting goaltender for the Capitals in Friday night's game against Columbus,Monumental Network's Mike Vogel reports"
Analysis: Philipp Grubauer continues to carry a heavy workload for the Capitals. He faces a hot Columbus team that has scored three or more goals in each of its last four games. Even so, the Blue Jackets have been streaky this season, and Grubauer has solid peripheral stats on the season (2.06 GAA, .936 save percentage), so he's worth playing despite the Capitals recent troubles.

Capitals' Grubauer Gets The Nod Friday

News: Philipp Grubauer will be between the pipes for Friday's game against the Blue Jackets, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Philipp Grubauer will return to the ice after giving way to Michael Neuvirth in the Capitals' last game Wednesday. Grubauer has lost each of his last two starts, but he has been the victim of some bad luck, giving up a total of only two goals in those game. He will need to be sharp again Friday to take down a Columbus squad that has won four straight.

Caps' Grubauer Sharp In Shootout Loss

News: Philipp Grubauer stopped 28 of 29 shots Tuesday against the Sharks, but ended up with a shootout loss.
Analysis: That's the second straight shootout loss for Philipp Grubauer and his fourth overtime loss in the last six games. However, he's played quite well in that span, posting save marks well over .900 in six of his last seven contests.

Caps' Grubauer Expected To Start Tuesday

News: Philipp Grubauer is expected to start in goal Tuesday against the Sharks, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Philipp Grubauer took a tough-luck loss Sunday, as he stopped 30 of 31 shots against the Sabres, but was defeated in shootout fashion. He's expected to make his second consecutive start Tuesday, and third in the team's last four games.

Capitals' Grubauer Stops 30 In Loss

News: Philipp Grubauer made 30 saves on 31 shots in a shootout loss to the Sabres on Sunday.
Analysis: Philipp Grubauer has picked up the loss in four of his last five games, although three of those were overtime losses. However, he still has a .934 save percentage and 2.16 GAA.

Caps' Grubauer Starting Sunday

News: Philipp Grubauer will start in goal Sunday against the Sabres, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Philipp Grubauer will step back between the pipes after yielding a start to Michal Neuvirth on Friday. Two weeks ago, the Sabres handed Grubauer a shootout loss, though Grubauer stopped 16-of-17 shots in that contest and will have the home crowd behind him this time around.

Caps' Grubauer Snaps Short Skid

News: Philipp Grubauer stopped 33 of 36 shots Thursday in a win over the Lightning, snapping a three-game losing streak.
Analysis: He hadn't played terribly by any means during that three-game skid, giving up a total of six goals and taking two overtime losses while receiving minimal offensive support. Braden Holtby has been an unmitigated disaster over the last month, which gives Philipp Grubauer room to not have to be perfect all the time. The result has been a run of very steady play from the German rookie.
