Appearance Won't Come For Caps' Orlov

News: Dmitry Orlov (wrist) will not enter the lineup Saturday against the Rangers, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: With the Capitals having already secured a playoff spot heading into Saturday's season finale, there was some belief that Dmitry Orlov might finally get a chance to play after missing the entire season while recovering from wrist surgery. However, since the Capitals are still trying to hold off the Islanders for second place in the Metropolitan Division, it appears coach Barry Trotz will stick with his usual lineup defensively, preventing Orlov from entering the fold. Though he's now healthy, Orlov won't be eligible to play during the postseason and will have to turn his sights toward next season before suiting up again.

Lineup Return In Question For Caps' Orlov

News: Head coach Barry Trotz said he would like to get Dmitry Orlov (wrist) into a game, but is not certain that will happen in the Caps' remaining two regular-season games, Chuck Gormley of CSN Washington reports.
Analysis: Dmitry Orlov has been recalled to the NHL ranks after a brief conditioning assignment with AHL Hershey. Unfortunately for him, the Capitals are fully healthy on the defensive side of their roster and are hoping to secure home ice in the first round of the playoffs, so the time may not be an opportune time to play the Russian blueliner, who has missed all season recovering from a wrist injury. However, presuming he's ready to go for the start of the 2015-16 campaign, Orlov remains a sleeper candidate in deeper leagues.

Caps Recall Orlov

News: The Capitals recalled Dmitry Orlov (wrist) from his conditioning stint with AHL Hershey on Thursday, the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Per the report, Dmitry Orlov will return to the Capitals' long-term injury list, with Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post relaying that it's unclear if Orlov will suit up for the team prior to the end of the regular season. Orlov has yet to suit up for the Capitals this season after undergoing wrist surgery last summer.

Orlov May Rejoin Capitals Soon

News: Alex Prewitt of The Washington Post reports "there is a chance" that Dmitry Orlov will join the Capitals on their upcoming road trip, and he could end up making his season debut at some point during that trip.
Analysis: Dmitry Orlov has had a terrible road to recovery following offseason wrist surgery and has only recently begun playing with AHL Hershey after being sent to the minors last week. The Capitals are hoping to have Orlov at the ready for the playoff run, but given the difficulty in his recovery, it's hard to say whether Orlov will be up to the task any time soon. However, should he return to the lineup and remain healthy, it should provide some assurance that he will be ready for next season, and thus improve his draft stock for the 2015-16 season.

Capitals' Orlov Headed To Hershey For Conditioning

News: Dmitry Orlov (wrist) was reassigned to AHL Hershey for a conditioning assignment Friday.
Analysis: The Capitals plan to re-evaluate Dmitry Orlov after he plays three games for AHL Hershey, but it's not clear that there's a place in the lineup for the 23-year-old blueliner. He should at least provide injury depth in the playoffs, and could emerge as an interesting target next season.

Caps' Orlov (Wrist) Headed To AHL For Conditioning

News: Dmitry Orlov (wrist) will be assigned to AHL Hershey this week for a conditioning stint, Alex Prewitt of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: The long-awaited conditioning assignment is the latest chapter in a long and frustrating recovery for Dmitry Orlov, who first injured his wrist while playing for Russia at the 2014 IIHF World Championships last June. The plan is for Orlov to play in three games for AHL Hershey and then re-evaluate. With a glut of healthy and well-conditioned NHL defensemen ahead of him, his prospects for cracking the Capitals lineup in a meaningful role this season appear slim, but he should be on your draft radar for next season, particularly if Mike Green departs during free agency. At the very least, things appear to finally be looking up for the talented Russian blueliner.

Conditioning Stint On Tap For Caps' Orlov

News: Dmitry Orlov (wrist) is traveling with the Capitals on their current road trip and is expected to begin a conditioning stint at AHL Hershey next week, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Dmitry Orlov, who is nearly 10 months removed from wrist surgery, finally appears ready to test himself in game action in what has been a painfully slow rehab process. He's expected to play the maximum three games allowed for a conditioning assignment before rejoining the Capitals, assuming everything checks out fine along the way. It's quite possible he could reemerge as a third-pairing defenseman for the Capitals during the postseason.

Capitals' Orlov Nearing Conditioning Assignment

News: Dmitry Orlov (wrist) will likely join AHL Hersey for a conditioning assignment next week, after he travels with the Capitals on an upcoming three-game road trip, CSN Washington's Chuck Gormley reports.
Analysis: Dmitry Orlov is likely hoping to get a few NHL games in before the end of the season to allow the Capitals to decide whether he can help the team in the playoffs. The Caps' upcoming road trip concludes with Saturday's game in Winnipeg, and Orlov's conditioning stint could be somewhat lengthy.

Caps' Orlov Set For Conditioning Work Soon

News: Coach Barry Trotz said Thursday that Dmitry Orlov (wrist) would head out on a conditioning stint at AHL Hershey in the near future, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Dmitry Orlov has been out of commission since undergoing wrist surgery 10 months ago. Though Orlov was expected to be ready to go at the start of the season, he's failed to notice much recovery in the wrist while skating and practicing with the Capitals, but Trotz's update suggests the blueliner may have finally turned the corner. The Capitals haven't outlined a target date for the start of the conditioning assignment, but considering how much time he's missed, he may require about three games in the minors before rejoining the parent club. His return could provide a boost to the Caps' blue line heading into the playoffs.

Status Of Caps' Orlov In Limbo

News: General manager Brian MacLellan said Dmitry Orlov's (wrist) status remains "in limbo," NHL.com's Adam Vingan reports.
Analysis: Dmitry Orlov has been seemingly in a holding pattern with his recovery from offseason wrist surgery for months. He's noticed only slight improvement since receiving clearance to take contact in January, and it's looking increasingly likely he might not play this season. The Capitals haven't ruled out a second wrist operation for Orlov, which would potentially jeopardize his availability for the start of the 2015-16 season.

Caps Say "Nothing's Been Decided" About Orlov

News: The Capitals remain uncertain about what they will do about Dmitry Orlov (wrist) this season, indicating that "nothing is off the table, including a second procedure", Alex Prewitt of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: It's been a frustrating season for Dmitry Orlov who has yet to play in any games this season as a result of ongoing, post-surgical complications to repair a broken wrist suffered during the 2014 IIHF World Championships in Belarus last summer. Orlov has been reportedly making progress, but this report casts doubt on his short-term future. It's looking increasingly likely that Orlov will not return to the NHL ranks this season, and thus his value remains limited to keeper leagues, although given his struggles in recovering from this injury, one now wonders if this will cast a shadow on his long-term prospects. For now, monitor his progress and keep any eye on him for next season.

Caps' Orlov (Wrist) Improving, But Not Ready To Go

News: Dmitry Orlov has noticed improvement with his wrist recently and was set to have a check-up with a doctor Wednesday, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Projected to serve as a third-pairing defenseman this season for the Capitals, Dmitry Orlov has been out since training camp after undergoing surgery on his wrist. He's been skating with the team for multiple months in an effort to stay conditioned, but his recovery from the surgery had mostly plateaued until recently. With Orlov now beginning to experience increased strength and flexibility with his wrist, the Capitals haven't closed the door on a return this season. He'll likely need a positive report from his doctor visit in order to have a legitimate shot at receiving clearance to play, or else undergo a second procedure to address the ailing wrist.

Caps' Orlov (Wrist) Sheds No-Contact Jersey

News: Dmitry Orlov (wrist) was cleared to take contact over the weekend, CSN Washington reports.
Analysis: The 23-year-old's recovery from offseason wrist surgery had been hitting a wall over the last several weeks, but it appears he's finally noticed a breakthrough here. While he's not expected to be activated from the team's non-roster injury list anytime in the immediate future, it at least gives Dmitry Orlov hope that he might be able to make an impact for the Capitals at some point in the second half.

Caps' Orlov (Wrist) Hits Another Roadblock

News: Dmitry Orlov has been slow to progress in his recovery from wrist surgery, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Dmitry Orlov is closing in on the seven-month mark in his recovery from the wrist procedure, which had been expected to sideline him for only four-to-six months. He's been able to practice in an attempt to test out the injury, but a temporary setback due to an infection has morphed into a long period of stagnancy in the recovery process for the blueliner. Orlov remains without a definitive timetable for a return.

Caps' Orlov Practices

News: Dmitry Orlov (wrist) practiced with the team Monday, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: It's a good sign that Dmitry Orlov's rehab is back on track after he seemed to hit a snag last week. Keep an eye out for him to head to AHL Hershey for a conditioning assignment once he's cleared for contact.

Caps' Orlov Healing Slowly

News: Dmitry Orlov (wrist) is not healing as quickly as the Caps had hoped, The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: While Dmitry Orlov is making progress, he's been limited mostly to skating as a way of building up his endurance while he's unable to play. Once he's ready to increase his activity, Orlov is expected to go on a conditioning assignment with Hershey.

Caps' Orlov May Be Out Until November

News: Coach Barry Trotz suggested Friday that Dmitry Orlov (wrist) may not be able to return until the end of November, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Since undergoing wrist surgery in May, Dmitry Orlov has failed to progress as quickly as the Capitals anticipated. Orlov was initially projected to be ready for Opening Night, but ultimately decided to stash him on long-term injured reserve after he failed to show much improvement. It sounds like the blueliner is still struggling to regain strength in the wrist one month later, and he's yet to take part in any practices with the team.

Caps' Orlov To Land On LTIR

News: Dmitry Orlov (wrist) will be placed on long-term injured reserve, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: The NHL's rules for long-term injured reserve dictate that Dmitry Orlov will be out for at least 10 games and 24 calendar days, which will prevent him from making his season debut until at least early November. Orlov was able to skate on his own Tuesday but remains stuck in the rehab process with his surgically-repaired wrist.

Capitals' Orlov Could Be Out Until November

News: Dmitry Orlov (wrist) may not be ready to play until November, Mike Vogel of the Capitals' website reports.
Analysis: The Capitals hoped Dmitry Orlov would be ready to play in early October, but it turns out his recovery is taking longer than expected. He figures to grab a spot on the Capitals' roster when he is ready to play, but it remains to be seen exactly when that will be.

Capitals' Orlov To Start Season On IR

News: Dmitry Orlov (wrist) will start the season on injured reserve, Alex Prewitt of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Dmitry Orlov has been skating on his own during training camp as he works his way back from a wrist injury sustained during the 2014 IIHF World Championships in Belarus while playing for the gold medal winning Team Russia. Once healthy, Orlov figures to be reunited with Mike Green, and although he should get some favorable matchups on a deep Capitals defense corps, he isn't likely to garner enough significant minutes to be an effective contributor from a fantasy perspective.

Caps' Orlov (Wrist) A Candidate For IR

News: Dmitry Orlov (broken wrist) could be a candidate for injured reserve to start the season, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Dmitry Orlov has yet to practice with the Capitals during training camp, as he continues to recover from offseason surgery on his injured wrist. With the Capitals projecting a mid-October return for the defenseman, there's a chance he could open the season on the injured reserve list, which would require him to remain there for a minimum of seven days.

Caps Hopeful Orlov Will Return In October

News: Head coach Barry Trotz is hopeful Dmitry Orlov (wrist) will return to the lineup sometime in early-October, although he indicated there is an "open time frame" for the recovery, Alex Prewitt of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Dmitry Orlov (wrist) broke his wrist during Team Russia's gold medal-winning performance at the 2014 IIHF World Championships in Belarus this summer. Trotz indicated Orlov has resumed skating and is on track to return to the lineup fairly soon. However, with the arrival of Matt Niskanen and Brooks Orpik, Orlov appears destined for a decrease in the top-4 minutes he saw last season, so he faces an uphill battle to be a solid producer from a fantasy perspective.

Caps' Orlov Sidelined Until Late-September

News: A team spokesman stated that Dmitry Orlov (wrist) is not expected to be cleared to return until "some point in September or October," Alex Prewitt of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Dmitry Orlov, who initially was reported to suffer a broken arm during Russia's gold-winning run at the 2014 IIHF World Championships in Belarus, underwent surgery on May 22nd to repair a broken wrist. The operating physician, renowned hand surgeon Dr. Charles Melone, specified a rehab period of about four months, which would cast Orlov's availability for the start of the season into doubt. After a rocky start to last season in which he was frustrated enough to seek a trade out of DC, Orlov eventually settled into a full-time role with the Caps and solidified himself as a top-four NHL defenseman going forward. While he still has upside in keeper leagues, the injury could have a significant impact on the front end of Orlov's 2014-15 season. You may want to move him down your draft list in single-season leagues until more promising news emerges.

Caps' Orlov Suffers Broken Arm At Worlds

News: Dmitry Orlov (arm) has suffered a broken arm playing for Team Russia at the IIHF World Championships in Belarus.
Analysis: Dmitry Orlov suffered the injury during Russia's 6-1 win over the United States on Monday. In three tournament games, Orlov notched an assist and a plus-3 rating. Recently signed to a two-year contact extension, Orlov has emerged as a reliable top-four defenseman for the Capitals this season despite a modest three goals and 11 points in 54 games. No timetable has been set for his recovery, but with training camp still four months off, Orlov seems likely to be ready for the 2014-15 NHL season.

Caps' Orlov To Play At World Championship

News: Dmitry Orlov will play for Team Russia in the 2014 IIHF World Championship in Belarus, Dmitry Chesnokov of Yahoo Sports reports.
Analysis: Dmitry Orlov will suit up for Team Russia after taking a significant step with the Capitals during the 2013-2014 season. After requesting a trade early in the season due to displeasure with lack of playing time and constant movement to and from the NHL and AHL ranks, the Capitals started playing Orlov more consistently, and the promising young Russian took great strides. Though he finished with only three goals and eight assists in 54 games, the 22-year-old Novokuznetsk native has emerged as a top-4 defenseman for the Capitals, logging a career-high 19:36 per game this season. Orlov will get a chance to hone is offensive skills in Belarus after posting point-per-game totals with Russia's Under-20 World Junior Championship teams. With Mike Green's future in Washington uncertain, there may be an opportunity for Orlov to claim an even larger role heading into next season as the team looks for another blue liner to share the load with workhorse John Carlson. Orlov will be worth keeping an eye on in the later rounds of next season's fantasy drafts.
