Flames' Orio (Lower Body) Out 6-8 Weeks

News: Joni Ortio will be out for six-to-eight weeks with a lower body injury he suffered Friday night, Pat Steinberg of 960 the FAN reports.
Analysis: With Jonas Hiller and Karri Ramo serving as the NHL goaltenders, Joni Ortio has been at AHL Adirondack. He's now in danger of missing the rest of the season, leaving Brad Thiessen as the third goalie in the organization.

Flames Demote Ortio

News: Joni Ortio was reassigned to AHL Adirondack on Thursday, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Analysis: The Flames haven't indicated whether or not the decision to demote Joni Ortio is just a short-term move with the NHL breaking for the All-Star Game, but with Karri Ramo (upper body) now back in the fold for the Flames, it wouldn't be surprising if Ortio remained in the minors after the break. Ortio had started the last five games for Calgary, playing spectacularly in the first four outings before imploding Wednesday against the Ducks, who beat him for four goals on just 11 shots. He deserves to see another look with the parent club at some point in 2014-15, but it may take another injury to Ramo or Jonas Hiller in order for that to materialize.

Flames' Ortio Yanked In Loss

News: Joni Ortio surrendered four goals on just 11 shots before being pulled in Wednesday's 6-3 loss to the Ducks.
Analysis: Making his fifth start start with hopes of also winning his fifth in a row, Joni Ortio had a massive implosion against the Ducks. It's a shame for the Flames, as they had been playing a remarkably sound defensive game allowing just 11 shots midway through the game. With a .931 save percentage and 1.98 GAA through five appearances, Ortio probably deserves another look between the pipes for Calgary, but with Karri Ramo healthy and Jonas Hiller the most experienced of the three, Ortio could be the odd man out when play resumes following the All-Star break Tuesday.

Flames' Ortio To Start Again Wednesday

News: Joni Ortio will be in net Wednesday against the Ducks, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Analysis: Though Karri Ramo (upper body) was formally activated from IR on Tuesday, Joni Ortio forced the Flames' hand and will continue to stick with the parent club due to his stellar play. He'll receive his fifth straight start after winning all of his previous four outings, posting a 1.23 GAA and .958 save percentage.

Flames' Ortio Claims Fourth Straight Win

News: Joni Ortio picked up his fourth consecutive win Monday against the Kings, stopping 33 of 34 shots in the victory.
Analysis: Called up ostensibly to provide depth behind Jonas Hiller while Karri Ramo (upper body) was on IR, Joni Ortio has quite possibly become the Flames' de facto No. 1 goalie. The young netminder has carried over his AHL successes to the next level since his Jan. 8 promotion, leading the Flames to the win column in all four of his starts while posting a 1.23 GAA and .958 save percentage. It looks like coach Bob Hartley will ride the goalie while he remains hot, but with Ramo seemingly on the cusp of returning, Ortio may be ticketed back for the minors once he endures a rough patch.

Flames' Ortio Starting Monday

News: Joni Ortio will get the start in net Monday against the Kings, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet reports.
Analysis: Joni Ortio will make his fourth straight appearance in net after allowing three goals in a 4-3 overtime win over the Sharks on Saturday. The 23-year-old, who was recalled from the AHL earlier in the month, is 3-0-0 with a 1.33 GAA.

Flames' Ortio Makes 19 Saves In Win

News: Joni Ortio stopped 19 of 22 shots in Saturday's win over the Sharks.
Analysis: Joni Ortio is now 3-0-0 this season with a stellar .953 save percentage and 1.33 GAA. As long as he keeps winning, the Flames will likely continue rolling with him in the crease. While he may get sent back down to the minors soon with Karri Ramo due to return from an upper-body injury, Ortio is worth riding while he's hot.

Flames Turn To Ortio On Saturday

News: Joni Ortio will start Saturday's game against the Sharks.
Analysis: The Flames will stick with the hot hand Saturday, with Joni Ortio having backstopped consecutive wins for the team, allowing just one goal in the process.

Ortio Delivers For Flames

News: Joni Ortio turned in his second strong start in as many tries Thursday, giving up just one goal on 28 shots in a 4-1 victory over Arizona.
Analysis: The degree of difficulty wasn't terribly hard against the hapless Coyotes, but it's still good to see Joni Ortio deliver a strong outing. The question of what caliber of goalie he is, however, remains open -- his stats from international play and the AHL have been all over the map. Meanwhile, Karri Ramo's pending return from an upper-body injury threatens to send Ortio back to the minors shortly.

Flames' Ortio To Receive Another Start

News: Joni Ortio will get the start in goal Thursday against the Coyotes.
Analysis: Coach Bob Hartley will grant Joni Ortio his second straight turn after he submitted a gem in his season debut Saturday against Vancouver, stopping all 36 shots he faced for his first career shutout. He could make for a decent streaming option against the Coyotes, but Ortio's future beyond Thursday's outing appears murky. The injured Karri Ramo (upper body) has been cleared to travel with the team and may be activated from injured reserve over the weekend, which would result in Ortio heading back to the minors.

Flames' Ortio Blanks Canucks

News: Joni Ortio was outstanding in his season-debut Saturday, stopping all 36 shots he faced in a win over Vancouver.
Analysis: With Karri Ramo (neck) on injured reserve, Joni Ortio has stepped into the backup role for the time being. While Ramo isn't expected to miss much time, Ortio was phenomenal Saturday, possible warranting another start in place of Jonas Hiller, who gave up six goals in his most recent outing. Ortio, who posted a 4-4-0 record with the Flames last season, makes for a decent spot start if the coach decides to give him another nod.

Flames' Ortio Starting Saturday

News: Joni Ortio will start in goal Saturday against the Canucks, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet 960 The FAN
Analysis: It'll be a battle of the backups in Vancouver on Saturday, with Eddie Lack set to start for the Canucks over Ryan Miller. Joni Ortio will make his first start of the season for the NHL club with Jonas Hiller sitting, after posting a 2.52 GAA and 0.916 save percentage in 27 games with AHL Adirondack.

Flames Recall Ortio

News: Joni Ortio was recalled from AHL Adirondack on Thursday.
Analysis: Karri Ramo was forced to injured reserve after exiting Wednesday's game against the Rangers following a knee to the head, creating a vacancy in goal for the Flames. Enter Joni Ortio, who will earn his first NHL call-up of the season after logging nine appearances with Calgary last season, during which he went 4-4-0 with a 2.51 GAA and .891 save percentage. He's not expected to see much time -- if any -- behind Jonas Hiller until Ramo is ready to resume backup duties.

Flames' Ortio Preserves Win In Relief Sunday

News: Joni Ortio stopped 13 shots in the third period Sunday to hold a 2-1 preseason win over Colorado.
Analysis: Joni Ortio should be the starting goalie in the AHL to start 2014-15, as Jonas Hiller and Karri Ramo have the two NHL spots all but wrapped up. He has the skills to be an NHL goalie, but may have to wait a year or two to get his chance.
