News: The Canucks have traded D Mathieu Schneider to the Coyotes for D Sean Zimmerman and a sixth-round pick.
Analysis: Schneider wasn't needed in Vancouver after signing a $1.5 million deal this offseason. He might see some time up with the Coyotes but until he starts producing some NHL offense he has no Fantasy value at this time. Zimmerman has yet to play in an NHL game and should also be ignored at thie time.
News: The Canucks have optioned D Mathieu Schneider to the AHL.
Analysis: Schneider signed a one-year deal with Vancouver in the offseason while he was recovering from shoulder surgery. Once healthy, however, he severely undercut expectations and was eventually taken out of the rotation by coach Alain Vigneault. That prompted Schneider to leave the team before he was placed on waiver. It will be interesting to see what transpires since Schneider has been a solid Fantasy option through the years.
News:The Vancouver Sun reports Canucks D Mathieu Schneider cleared waivers on Wednesday after being placed on them Tuesday. He might be optioned to Manitoba of the AHL or recalled for Thursday's game against the Blues since Kevin Bieska was injured on Tuesday against the Coyotes. However, Schneider would have to go through re-entry waivers and the 29 other NHL teams would have a chance to claim him. The Province is also reporting that the Canucks are trying to trade Schneider.
Analysis: Now that the Canucks are in a bit of a dire situation, teams might be more willing to take on the veteran defenseman to keep him away from Vancouver. Schneider signed a one-year deal with Vancouver in the offseason while he was recovering from shoulder surgery. Once healthy, however, he severely undercut expectations and was eventually taken out of the rotation by coach Alain Vigneault. That prompted Schneider to leave the team before he was placed on waivers Tuesday. It will be interesting to see what transpires since Schneider has been a solid Fantasy option through the years. Keep tabs on his progress in the coming days.
News:The Sports Xchange reports Canucks D Mathieu Schneider, 40, remains out of the lineup for unspecified personal reasons. Speculation is increasing that he wants a trade, or may retire, because he is unhappy with his limited playing time.
Analysis: A trade seems most likely. The Canucks could release him, but they risk losing him to a division or conference rival and getting nothing in return. With his career approaching its end, Schneider is only likely to report to a Stanley Cup contender anyway. He has been slow to recover from offseason shoulder surgery and it seems all that missed time in the preseason is becoming detrimental to his conditioning. Take Schneider out of Fantasy lineups until further notice.
News: NHL.com reports that Canucks D Mathieu Schneider remains out of the lineup because of personal reasons.
Analysis: Schneider has been very disappointing for Fantasy owners since drawing into the Canucks' rotation after missing time recovering from shoulder surgery, so his presence likely hasn't been missed. Continue to ignore him in all but deeper leagues.
News:The Sports Xchange reports D Mathieu Schneider wasn't expected to play back-to-back games for the Canucks, but with Saturday's and Sunday's contests the 40-year-old was in the lineup for both home games. It might have caught up with Schneider, who along with partner Christian Ehrhoff looked bad on San Jose's first goal. Don't be surprised if Schneider sits out one of back-to-back games in New Jersey and Philadelphia on Wednesday and Thursday, with Shane O'Brien, who has quietly been a healthy scratch for seven straight games, finally drawing back into the lineup.
Analysis: Schneider has been very disappointing for Fantasy owners since drawing into the Canucks' rotation after missing time recovering from shoulder surgery. The fact he missed training camp has hurt him. He might need a few more weeks until he is up to pace. Don't lose hope yet on Schneider, who can be a high-end Fantasy option.
News: Canucks D Mathieu Schneider scored a goal, tallied an assist and finished at plus-2 during Saturday's game against the Avalanche. Schneider recorded his second goal 8:22 into the second when he beat Craig Anderson on a slap shot.
Analysis: Schneider only recently returned to the lineup after being a healthy scratch for a few games. The veteran blueliner has been kind of slow to regain his form after starting the year on IR. However, once he gets going, he can be very good for Fantasy owners. Don't lose hope yet on Schneider, who can be a high-end Fantasy option.
News: Canucks D Mathieu Schneider was a healthy scratch Sunday against the Avalanche after the 40-year-old veteran played his first four games in six nights after missing the start of the season recovering from summer shoulder surgery.
Analysis: We doubt Schneider will be a regular in the press box and was just given the night off Sunday for precautionary matters. He has one goal in his first four games with the Canucks. Once Schneider gets up to game speed, we expect him to be a reliable Fantasy option.
News: Canucks D Mathieu Schneider scored his first goal since moving to Vancouver when he slapped one home from the point on the power play in Tuesday's loss to the Red Wings.
Analysis: Schneider got three more minutes of ice time than he did in his Canucks debut, so he's clearly making his way back to 100 percent. If he continues to thrive this week, get him active in most formats for Fantasy Week 5 (Nov. 2-8).
News: Veteran D Mathieu Schneider, 40, made his Canucks debut Sunday against the Oilers after starting the season on the injured list following summer shoulder surgery. He didn't have a point in 14:51 of ice time and finished at even. He also failed to take a shot.
Analysis: Schneider looked a bit rusty at times on Sunday but that can be expected since he missed training camp. Once Schneider is up to full speed, he should be able to contribute regularly for Vancouver. Remember, Schenider is one of those players that does well on a contender. Schneider has high-end Fantasy potential when healthy.
News: Canucks D Mathieu Schneider, who had shoulder surgery this summer, is expected to play against the Oilers on Sunday, the soonest he is eligible to play after starting the season on the long-term injury list.
Analysis: Schneider might be getting up there in years, but he should feature heavily with the Canucks this season, especially on the power play. Get him active in a good amount of leagues for Fantasy Week 4 (Oct. 26-Nov. 1) if he does end up playing Sunday.
News: The Vancouver Sun reports that Canucks RW Pavol Demitra and D Mathieu Schneider will start the season on the long-term injury list, meaning they'll miss at least the first 10 games and 24 days.
Analysis: Schneider should be a valuable offensive blue-liner when healthy, so just continue to stash him in all formats for the time being. As a decent low-end starting forward, Demitra shold also be benched until he's ready to return in late October.
News: The National Post reports that Canucks D Mathieu Schneider practiced with his new team over the weekend for the first time. Schneider is recovering from May shoulder surgery.
Analysis: Schneider has landed in a good situation with the Canucks. He is going to be a valuable offensive blue-liner when healthy on a top contender, and if we have learned anything from Schneider's career, he does his best work for winners. Now, he just has to get back to 100 percent. Schneider should be considered an injury-risk Fantasy sleeper Draft Day, but might not be ready for opening night.
News:The Sports Xchange reports Canucks D Mathieu Schneider, who signed a $1.5-million free agent contract in August, is recovering from the same shoulder surgery that is expected to keep forward Pavol Demitra out until at least mid-October. The 40-year-old isn't sure he'll be ready for the start of the season. "Until I get into a full contact scrimmage or game, you can't tell," said Schneider, who was signed to boost the Canucks' power play. "So far, nothing has led me to believe I can't be ready but, at the same time, I don't want to be playing at 80 percent on Oct. 1. Obviously I don't want to rush anything. I've been skating and shooting and I feel really good so that's the first step. The second step is to ease my way into contact."
Analysis: Schneider has landed in a good situation with the Canucks. He is going to be a valuable offensive blueliner when healthy on a top contender, and if we have learned anything from Schneider's career, he does his best work for winners. Now, he just has to get back to 100 percent. Schneider should be considered an injury-risk Fantasy sleeper Draft Day.
News: The Vancouver Canucks have signed veteran free agent defenseman Mathieu Schneider to a one-year contract. The team announced the deal on Friday, when it also acquired defensemen Christian Ehrhoff and Brad Lukowich from the San Jose Sharks.
Analysis: The 40-year-old Schneider is coming off shoulder surgery. He had nine goals and 32 points in 67 games while splitting last season between Atlanta and Montreal. He has 221 goals and 724 points in 1,264 games during a 20-year career with eight NHL teams. This move is great for Schneider, who always seems to do better when playing on a contender. However, the biggest issue remains how will he play coming off surgery? Schneider should be considered an injury-risk Fantasy sleeper Draft Day.
News:The Sports Xchange reports the Blues have been rumored to have interest in veteran defensemen Mathieu Schneider and Sergei Zubov. Zubov has apparently gone off the market, signing a contract with Russia's KHL. Blues president John Davidson said both Schneider and Zubov "are players coming off injuries. Zubov hasn't played the last two years. Schneider, when is he going to be 100 percent? Do they want a one-year or two-year deal? Would they come to your city? That's where it's all at."
Analysis: The Blues signed Brendan Bell recently, so it seems Schneider could no longer be on their radar. Schneider would be a nice fit for the Blues since they are contenders in the Western Conference. Schneider always does his best work for winning teams. For instance, he struggled with the Thrashers in 2008-09 before excelling after being dealt to Montreal. Schneider can still be a useful Fantasy option, although there is some injury-risk involved.
News: Montreal D Mathieu Schneider underwent arthroscopic surgery on his shoulder last week. The 39-year-old was first injured April 4 against the Toronto Maple Leafs, forcing him to miss two regular-season games and two playoff games. He is expected to be ready to play by the start of training camp.
Analysis: Schneider had five goals and 12 assists in 23 games with Montreal after returning to the Canadiens in a Feb. 16 trade with the Thrashers. Monitor his status over the offseason as he is a free agent. He is a high-end defenseman when healthy but his advanced age and this surgery is obviously a concern.
News: Montreal defensemen Andrei Markov and Mathieu Schneider missed Game 4 of the Eastern Conference playoff series against the Boston Bruins because of injuries. Coach and general manager Bob Gainey says before Wednesday night's game that Markov is sidelined with a knee injury. Schneider has a sore shoulder, and needed to leave the morning skate. Both players watched as Boston finished off the series sweep Wednesday.
Analysis: Schneider's season really turned around in late February when he was dealt from Atlanta to Montreal. He always does better when he plays on a contender as opposed to a bottom feeder. Track Schneider's offseason progress before taking a flier on him Draft Day. He is a free agent and where he signs will heavily dictate his Fantasy value for 2009-10.
News: Montreal LW Alex Tanguay and D Mathieu Schneider were both injured and unable to play for Montreal on Monday in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference quartefinals against the Bruins. The Canadiens, already without injured top defenseman Andrei Markov, announced moments after the opening faceoff that both key players were sidelined by upper-body injuries.
Analysis: Schneider is not much of a goal scorer as a defenseman but he did record 32 points this season for Montreal. The Canadiens are on the brink of elimination down 3-0 in the series so they'll need him in Game 4. Schneider was traded from Atlanta mid-season and went from being a low- to a high-end Fantasy option. He will once again be a free agent in the offseason, so where he signs will be key in determining his 2009-10 Fantasy value.
News: Defenseman Mathieu Schneider returned to Montreal's lineup Thursday against the Bruins after missing two game with an upper-body injury. He was originally expected to miss the remainder of the season. Schneider had a goal to make it 4-3 with 3:07 left in the second period. It was his ninth goal of the season.
Analysis: Schneider now has two goals and five assists during a seven-game point streak. He has totaled five goals and 11 assists in 22 games since being acquired in a trade from Atlanta. The trade has taken Schneider from being a low-end option with the Thrashers to being a must-start option with the Canadiens. Throughout Schneider's career, he has always benefited from playing on a contender. He will once again be a free agent in the offseason, so where he signs will be key in determining his 2009-10 Fantasy value.
News: Montreal lost top defensemen Andrei Markov and Mathieu Schneider to injuries in Saturday night's 6-2 loss in Toronto. They were both unable to play on Monday and won't play on Tuesday either. "The players weren't available tonight and won't be (Tuesday night), but I have no more information to give you about the injuries to Markov and Schneider," coach Bob Gainey said.
Analysis: Markov leads the Canadiens with 52 assists and 64 points, and Schneider has rekindled his offensive game since coming over in a February trade from Atlanta. The duo make a formidable offensive pairing when healthy and both pass as high-end Fantasy options. They should not be active in daily leagues on Tuesday.
News: The Montreal Canadiens will be without D Andrei Markov and D Mathieu Schneider for Monday's game against the Ottawa Senators. Both players, the team's top two point men on the power play, could also miss Tuesday night's game against the Rangers in New York. Markov and Schneider were injured in Montreal's 6-2 victory over the Maple Leafs in Toronto on Saturday night. Schneider has what the team calls an upper body injury while Markov is believed to have injured his right leg.
Analysis: Markov leads the Canadiens with 52 assists and 64 points, and Schneider has rekindled his offensive game since coming over in a February trade from Atlanta. The duo make a formidable offensive pairing when healthy and both pass as high-end Fantasy options. With this latest news, they are now very high-risk injury starts for Fantasy Week 27 (April 6-12).
News:The Sports Xchange reports the Canadiens took one giant step closer to a playoff berth with a 6-2 win over Toronto on Saturday, but they received a scare when defensemen Mathieu Schneider and Andrei Markov both left the game with upper-body injuries. However, coach Bob Gainey said he didn't think either player was seriously hurt and he expects both players to be available when the Canadiens play the Ottawa Senators on Monday in Montreal.
Analysis: Markov leads the Canadiens with 52 assists and 64 points, and Schneider has rekindled his offensive game since coming over in a February trade from Atlanta. The duo make a formidable offensive pairing when healthy and both pass as high-end Fantasy options. It appears safe to consider them low-risk starts Week 27 (April 6-12).
News: Canadiens D Mathieu Schneider scored a goal and finished at plus-1 during Tuesday's game against the Blackhawks. Schneider ripped a power-play goal past Cristobal Huet 16:43 into the third period. He has one goal and four assists during a four-game point streak.
Analysis: Schneider has totaled four goals and 11 assists in 19 games since joining the Canadiens. We aren't shocked with Schneider's recent production because we figured moving to a contender would spark him game. It has and Schneider is back to being a high-end Fantasy defenseman.
News: Canadiens D Mathieu Schneider assisted twice in Tuesday's OT win over the Oilers.
Analysis: Schneider is doing everything with the Habs he couldn't in Atlanta. It's kind of sad that Schneider only plays well when he is on a contender, but since he is back with Montreal, he is reverting to being a high-end Fantasy defenseman.
News:Mathieu Schneider was able to do for Montreal on the final shot of the game what Philadelphia failed to achieve in eight tries. Score on the power play. Schneider scored with a man advantage at 3:21 of overtime to give the Canadiens a 4-3 victory over the Flyers on Friday. "I just tried to hang on and just get a wrister through with a screen," Schneider said. He caught a break when Scottie Upshall was sent off for goalie interference. Recently acquired from Atlanta to quarterback the power play, Schneider, who also had an assist, scored his seventh goal of the season on a wrist shot from the right circle. It was Montreal's first goal since it scored three times in a 2:04 span in the first period.
Analysis: Schneider has three goals and two assists in his first five games with the Canadiens. He is doing everything with the Habs he couldn't in Atlanta. It's kind of sad that Schneider only plays well when he is on a contender, but since he is back with Montreal, he is reverting to being a high-end Fantasy defenseman.
News: Canadiens D Mathieu Schneider might have finished at minus-4 Thursday against the Penguins, but he recorded his first goal for Montreal since being picked up in a trade from Atlanta. Schneider's slap shot eluded goalie Marc-Andre Fleury with seven seconds left in a 21-second two-man advantage created by penalties on Petr Sykora and Maxime Talbot. The 39-year-old defenseman has two points in his first two games with the Canadiens.
Analysis: We figured the move back north would spark Schneider's game, and with points in his first two games it sure looks that way. Schneider has always done better in his career when playing for a contender and that's what the Habs are. Consider adding Schneider in Fantasy for the stretch run.
News: The Montreal Canadiens acquired defenseman Mathieu Schneider from the Atlanta Thrashers on Monday for two draft picks. Schneider began his career with Montreal and helped the Canadiens win the Stanley Cup in 1993. "We were looking for a defenseman who could contribute offensively," general manager Bob Gainey said in a release. "Mathieu, an experienced player with a lot of offensive upside, will bring depth to our core group of defensemen and will be an asset on our power play."
Analysis: The Thrashers received second- and third-round picks for the 39-year-old Schneider, who has four goals and 11 assists in 44 games this season. Schneider, who played for Montreal from 1987-1995, has 216 goals and 501 assists in 1,241 career games. He also has played for the New York Islanders, Toronto, the New York Rangers, Los Angeles, Detroit, Anaheim and Atlanta. The Ducks traded Schneider to Atlanta before the season to clear cap space, but the move backfired on Atlanta since the veteran defenseman never provided the mentoring role to Zach Bogosian the team expected. It also cost Schneider a lot of Fantasy value since he went from contender to pretender and suffered in the stat column. Now that Schneider is back on a playoff-contending team, he could once again become a high-end Fantasy option. Consider taking a flier on Schneider in larger Fantasy leagues.
News: Thrashers D Mathieu Schneider scored his fourth goal of the season in Saturday's win over the Predators.
Analysis: Schneider has only 10 points on the season and none in his past three performances. He's barely worth using in deeper leagues right now, but the D position is pretty shallow.
News:The Sports Xchange reports D Mathieu Schneider was signed by the Thrashers to serve as a veteran presence on the ice and in the locker room. In Saturday's loss to Florida, Schneider played more like a rookie when he took back-to-back penalties in the second period. He then overcommitted on a 3-on-2 in the third period, leading to Florida's sixth goal.
Analysis: Schneider has had dealt with a few injuries in 2008-09, but nothing overly serious. His biggest problem has been adjusting to a mentoring role to rookie Zach Bogosian bequeathed upon him by management. We figured Schneider would struggle in his move to Atlanta, but to post a minus-17 rating is quite alarming. Schneider remains a low-end Fantasy option until further notice.
News: After missing eight games with an upper body injury, Thrashers D Mathieu Schneider returned to the lineup on Saturday and played just over 19 minutes in the game.
Analysis: Schneider has only seven points on the season and none in his past three performances. When healthy, as he is now, think of him as a No. 3 defenseman.

News: Thrashers D Mathieu Schneider missed his fourth straight game because of an upper body injury Wednesday against the Rangers. He remains questionable heading into Friday against the Bruins.
Analysis: Schneider has had a few injury mishaps in 2008-09, but hasn't been out for an extended period of time. There is no telling when Schneider will return to action, but since he is primarily around to act as a babysitter for rookie Zach Bogosian -- who is still out with a broken leg -- the Thrashers will keep him reserved until he is 100 percent. Schneider is still more of a No. 3 Fantasy defenseman when healthy.

News: After leaving Atlanta's loss to St. Louis on Sunday with a lower body injury, Atlanta D Mathieu Schneider was scratched for Tuesday's game against the Canadiens. He remains questionable for Wednesday at Ottawa.
Analysis: Schneider recently returned from a hip flexor injury that kept him out five games and had one goal and two assists in his previous five games coming into Sunday's game. He has been improving offensively after a rough start to his Atlanta career, but Schneider is still more of a No. 3 Fantasy defenseman when healthy.
News:The Sports Xchange reports D Mathieu Schneider left Atlanta's loss to St. Louis Sunday during the second period with an unspecified lower body injury and wasn't able to return. His status for Tuesday's game in Montreal is undecided.
Consider him an injury-risk start Week 9 (Dec. 1-7).

Analysis: Schneider is trying to turn his season around after the first few weeks of his Atlanta career haven't gone as planned. The move to a bottom feeder has really cut into Schneider's Fantasy value, making him at best a No. 3 Fantasy option at this time.
News: Thrashers D Mathieu Schneider returned to the lineup Thursday against the Penguins after missing five games with a hip flexor. He had an assist and finished at even in 22:15 of ice time. He also spent two minutes in the penalty box.

News: The official Atlanta Thrashers web site reports that D Mathieu Schneider (hip) will play Friday against the Penguins.

News: Thrashers D Mathieu Schneider did not return to action Sunday against the Flyers because of a hip flexor. He has missed the last five games and remains questionable heading into Thursday against the Penguins.
Analysis: Schneider was only expected to miss three games with the hip ailment, but now his absence has extended five games and still no word on when he might play again. Schneider has just four points (one goals) in 12 games and a minus-11 rating. Not very good rating for a player that has finished even or better for seven straight seasons. The change of scenery has really hurt Schneider's Fantasy value. He is now more of a No. 3 Fantasy defenseman when healthy, but he still appears a risky start for Fantasy Week 7 (Nov. 17-23).
News: Thrashers D Mathieu Schneider did not return to action Friday against the Hurricanes because of a hip flexor. He has missed the last four games and remains questionable heading into Sunday against the Flyers.

Analysis: The Thrashers acquired the 33-year-old Schneider in a late September trade with Anaheim. He ranks fifth among active players with 1,209 career games. News: Thrashers D Mathieu Schneider scored his first Atlanta goal during Saturday's 5-4 loss to the Bruins. He scored on the power play with just 11 seconds left in the first period. He also had an assist for his first multi-point game with Atlanta.
Analysis: Despite the two points, Schneider finished at minus-2 Saturday and is at minus-8 on the season. We figured his offensive numbers might suffer a little after moving from a contender to non-contender. However, Schneider is starting to get going and still remains a decent No. 2 or No. 3 Fantasy defenseman.
News:The Sports Xchange reports Thrashers D Mathieu Schneider continues to be used in every situation -- even-strength, power-play and short-handed -- by coach John Anderson. Schneider, once again, led all Thrashers with 26:07 of ice time in Thursday's 3-2 win over the Sabres.
Analysis: Schneider might be used in all situations, but he has no goals, one assist and a minus-4 rating. We figured his offensive production would dip after moving from a contender to potential last place team. Schneider is still loggging a lot of playing time and will get his offensive numbers. Treat him as a No. 2 or No. 3 Fantasy defenseman.
News:The Sports Xchange reports Thrashers D Mathieu Schneider played in the 1,200th game of his NHL career in the 4-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild Tuesday. Schneider led all Thrashers with 26:10 of ice time and picked up an assist on Bryan Little's third-period goal.
Analysis: Schneider has just one point in his first three games with Atlants, eight penalty minutes and a minus-4 rating. We expected his plus/minus rating would take a dip in Atlanta since they will struggle to win on most nights. Schneider is still loggging a lot of playing time and will be asked to contribute offensively. Treat him as a No. 2 or No. 3 Fantasy defenseman.
News:Mathieu Schneider made his debut with the Thrashers during Saturday's preseason game against the Blues after being acquired from Anaheim last week and assisted on Brett Sterling's goal. The veteran defenseman was paired with rookie Zach Bogosian, the third overall pick in the NHL draft.
Analysis: It looks as though Schneider will fit in just fine with the Thrashers and could be a very good mentor for Bogosian. Schneider usually has one of the best plus/minus ratings in the NHL, but it will be really tested in '08-09 with the Thrashers since they aren't as good as a team as Anaheim. He will be a top defenseman for Atlanta, but view Schneider as more of a No. 2 Fantasy defenseman.
News: The Atlanta Thrashers acquired defenseman Mathieu Schneider from Anaheim on Friday for defenseman Ken Klee and forwards Brad Larsen and Chad Painchaud. The 39-year-old Schneider had 12 goals and 39 points in 65 games last season, his lone season with the Ducks. He will make $5.75 million this season, giving the Ducks a salary-cap savings of at least $3 million in the deal.
Analysis: Schneider has 212 goals and 490 assists in 1,197 regular-season games in 19 seasons with Montreal, the New York Islanders, Toronto, the New York Rangers, Los Angeles, Detroit and Anaheim. His production dipped in 2007-08 because Scott Niedermayer returned mid-season. Niedermayer opted to return for a full season in 2008-09 and that made Schneider expendable.
News: Ducks defenseman Mathieu Schneider cleared waivers Wednesday and remained on the roster, leaving the team about $3 million over the $56.7 million salary cap. The 39-year-old NHL veteran wasn't claimed by another team after being placed on waivers Tuesday. That leaves the Ducks with difficult decisions involving the salary cap crunch that has led them to delay re-signing free agent winger Teemu Selanne. "We wanted to see if we could do it from a timing standpoint that would free the money up immediately to sign Teemu," Ducks general manager Brian Burke said. "We've been trying to trade Mathieu and have not been able to put a deal together that makes sense, so we said we're going to take a shot at this route and see what happens."
Analysis: Schneider signed a two-year, $11.25 million contract in July 2007, before the Ducks knew for sure that Scott Niedermayer was going to return. Niedermayer returned midway through last season and is already on the books for 2008-09. When that happened, Schneider became expendable. The Ducks can't buy out Schneider's contract because the deadline for doing so has passed. Burke said the team has turned down a minimum of five trades for Schneider in the last week, with all of them involving additional players. He said the Ducks would reassess those options. Schneider had 12 goals and 27 assists in 65 games for the Ducks last season. He appeared in all six playoff games, with one goal. He had a plus-or-even rating in 32 consecutive games from Dec. 18-March 5, the longest streak in the NHL last season. Schneider is going to play in the NHL this season; just where remains the big question. Fantasy owners should continue to draft him as a No. 2 Fantasy defenseman until further notice.
News:The Sports Xchange reports Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey has spent most of the summer waiting for Mats Sundin to decide whether he wants to play in Montreal. He says he's willing to wait a little longer but he admits that it doesn't look as if Sundin is heading to Montreal. Speaking at coach Guy Carbonneau's golf tournament on Aug. 25, Gainey said he has little contact with Sundin or his agent over the previous two weeks. Gainey noted that he had a Plan B but refused to elaborate. There have been rumors that the Canadiens might make a trade for Chicago's Robert Lang or could shore up the defense by bringing back Anaheim's Mathieu Schneider.
Analysis: It has been long rumored that Schneider might be on his way out of Anaheim since the Ducks are well over the cap right now and already have Scott Niedermayer back in the fold for 2008-09. Don't be surprised if Schneider is dealt before training camp. In his first season with Anaheim, he has 12 goals, 39 points and a plus-22 rating in 65 games. His offensive production slowed when Niedermayer returned mid-season. Schneider is still capable of being a productive offensive player and likely will have one of the best plus/minus ratings in the NHL. However, he is more of a No. 2 or No. 3 Fantasy defenseman heading into 2008-09. A trade, though, could increase his value.
News: Ducks defenseman Mathieu Schneider scored twice in regulation, goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere made a pair of stops in a shootout and Anaheim defeated the Dallas Stars 3-2 on Sunday.Schneider opened the scoring with a 55-footer from the right side that sailed past Marty Turco at 9:43 of the first period. After Mike Modano evened it at 1 at 6:45 of the second, Schneider put the Ducks in front again at 14:54 of the period with his second goal of the game and 12th of the season. The multi-goal game was the 15th of his career.
Analysis: Schneider has three goals and three assists in his last seven games. While he has been playing well lately, he still hasn't hit 10-plus points in any month this season. Not good coming from a guy that accomplished that feat twice in 2006-07 and nearly did it four times. The highest he has gotten this season has been nine points -- all the way back in November. Schneider is one point shy of making it 40 points for a fifth straight season. Still use him as a No. 2 or No. 3 Fantasy forward.
News: Ducks D Mathieu Schneider tallied an assist and finished at even during Sunday's game against the Flames. He now has two goals and three assists in his last six games. He is also at plus-5 in that span.
Analysis: The return of Scott Niedermayer really cut into Schneider's offensive production in the beginning, but now that he is once again comfortable with his offensive role, the points are rolling in. Continue to view Schneider as a high-end Fantasy option.
News:Mathieu Schneider came back to haunt his old team. He had a goal and an assist to lift the Anaheim Ducks to a 3-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday. Schneider, who played with Detroit for four seasons before signing with Anaheim as a free agent last summer, broke a 1-1 tie 8:28 into the second period and put the Ducks in the lead for good. It was the first time the defenseman has played at Joe Louis Arena since leaving Detroit and wasn't booed until he scored. "I guess you expect a little bit. The fans treated me tremendously when I was here," Schneider said. "I hope there are no hard feelings."
Analysis: Schneider's slap shot from the point beat Chris Osgood after changing directions for his eighth goal. The goal was made possible when it appeared that Osgood was freezing the puck in the crease, but Chris Kunitz knocked it away into the right corner, retrieved it and then passed to Schneider. Osgood wasn't happy about the way Kunitz did it. "You can't bodycheck a goalie in the crease and knee him," Osgood said. "I don't know if he even got it with the stick. He just kneed me right in the head." Well, what's done is done and Schneider scored for the second time in three games. He also has three assists in his last five games. The return of Scott Niedermayer really cut into Schneider's offensive production in the beginning, but now that he is once again comfortable with his offensive role, the points are rolling in. Continue to view Schneider as a high-end Fantasy option.
News:Mathieu Schneider's power-play goal at 8:45 of the third period Sunday against Dallas ended Marty Turco's bid for his 32nd career shutout. He finished at minus-1, but has at least one point in five of his last seven games. He has one goal and five assists in that span.
Analysis: The return of Scott Niedermayer really cut into Schneider's offensive production in the beginning, but now that he is once again comfortable with his offensive role, the points are rolling in. Continue to view Schneider as a high-end Fantasy option.
News: Ducks D Mathieu Schneider had two assists in Friday's win over Anaheim. He has ab assist in four of his last six games.
Analysis: Schneider has slowly gotten more and more productive even while playing alongside Scott Niedermayer. Fantasy owners should continue to consider Schneider a useful No. 2 defender.
News: Ducks D Mathieu Schneider failed to record a point for the sixth straight game during Friday's tilt with the Blackhawks. He did manage two penalties -- a hooking call in the first period and interference call in the third period.
Analysis: In the nine games that Scott Niedermayer has been active, Schneider has just one point -- a goal Dec. 19 against the Avalanche. We expected that Niedermayer would still some of Schneider's thunder and we were unfortunately right. Schneider is still a decent Fantasy option, but has lost some appeal.
News: Ducks D Mathieu Schneider tallied an assist and finished at plus-1 during Friday's game against the Wild. He now has at least one point in five of his last six games. He has two goals and five assists in that span.
Analysis: Schneider joined the Ducks in early November after a few injuries delayed the start of his season. In 19 games since joining the lineup, he has four goals and 12 assists. After the puck squirted out into the slot from a scrum on the right boards, Schneider skated in and beat Nikolai Khabibulin high on the glove side. It was his fourth goal this season and second in as many games.
Analysis: An ankle and hip injury has really set Schneider back this season, but he does have 12 points in 15 games and is scoring when on the ice. He remains a solid Fantasy option and let's hope he doesn't have to miss any more time because of injury.
News: With Wednesday's return to the lineup at Dallas of winger Todd Bertuzzi, who had missed the previous 14 games because of a concussion, and defenseman Mathieu Schneider, who had sat out the previous two because of a sore hip flexor, the Ducks had every player on their active roster healthy and available for duty for the first time this season. Bertuzzi and Schneider, the club's marquee off-season, free-agent acquisitions, who signed two-year contracts worth a combined $19.25 million, appeared in the same game for the first time.
Analysis: Schneider played 20:19 after having missed the previous two games because of a hip flexor. Schneider is in his 19th NHL season and he will likely face a few more nagging injuries than some of the younger players. However, he is too valuable to sit when healthy. In just seven games this season, he has two goals and six assists.
News: Anaheim D Mathieu Schneider missed his second straight game with a sore hip on Saturday against the Sharks. Schneider missed the first 13 games of the season while recovering from a broken left ankle. The Sports Xchange reports the club and Schneider are hopeful the veteran defenseman and power play wizard will be recovered sufficiently from a hip flexor to be back in the lineup Wednesday when the Ducks visit the Dallas Stars. "I don't want to keep aggravating it," Schneider said. "It's not going to help if I'm in and out of the lineup for the next month. I need to make sure I'm back and I'm 100 percent. It can't go on like this."
Analysis: Schneider began feeling discomfort during Tuesday's 4-3 shootout victory over the Kings at Honda Center. He missed Thursday's rematch. Schneider is in his 19th NHL season and he will likely face a few more nagging injuries than some of the younger players. However, he is too valuable to sit when healthy. In just six games this season, he has two goals and six assists. He still has it. Consider him an injury-risk start heading into Fantasy Week 8 (Nov. 19-25).

News: Mathieu Schneider played his first game for the Anaheim Ducks and took a shot in a shootout for the first time in his career. The 38-year-old defenseman made his Anaheim debut a memorable one Thursday, scoring the only goal of the shootout in the Ducks' 2-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Schneider, signed as a free agent during the offseason to help fill in the vacancy left by Scott Niedermayer, took the Ducks' second shot in the tiebreaker and beat Fredrik Norrena between the pads, the puck trickling across the goal line as the goalie frantically reached back to try to stop it. "I never would have imagined that finish," Schneider said, adding that he now has a record in shootouts. "I'm 100 percent now. I'm one for one."
Analysis: Being a defenseman, he could hardly believe it when coach Randy Carlyle told him to get ready to shoot. "I thought he was kidding at first," Schneider said. Carlyle said, "It was just one of those things that you do on the bench; you make a decision and you go with it." He might be entering his 19th season in the NHL, but still remains one of the best defensemen in the game. It appears safe to finally activate him in Fantasy leagues.

News: The Detroit News reports Mathieu Schneider (fractured left ankle) is still at least two weeks away from making his regular season debut for the Anaheim Ducks. He has been sidelined since suffered a non-displaced fracture in the team's first preseason game in early September.
Analysis: The Ducks head out on the road for a pair of games on Oct. 20 at St. Louis and Oct. 23 at Dallas, so we expect he'll be sidelined until at least Oct. 25. It's unlikely he'd make his debut on the road, but stranger things have happened. Keep him reserved in all FAntasy leagues until he can officially return and prove his health.

News: New Ducks defenseman Mathieu Schneider will be out at least four weeks after breaking a bone in the left ankle during his first preseason game with the Stanley Cup champions. An MRI taken Sunday revealed that Schneider sustained a non-displaced fracture of the ankle Saturday night in Anaheim's 3-2 victory over Los Angeles. According to coach Randy Carlyle, Schneider was injured in a corner when the defenseman turned around and twisted his ankle while trying to close in on a Kings player. "It was very harmless looking, but obviously we got the worst-case scenario as far as what transpired," Carlyle said. "It's obviously something we didn't expect to happen, but injuries are part of the game and now somebody else will get more of an opportunity."
Analysis: The 38-year-old Schneider, beginning his 20th NHL season, signed a two-year deal with Anaheim. The Ducks brought him aboard this summer as insurance in case captain Scott Niedermayer decides to retire. The team isn't pressuring Niedermayer for a decision, but did suspend him last Tuesday when he didn't report for training camp. Schneider had 11 goals and 41 assists in 68 games with Detroit last season, his fourth with the Red Wings. He broke his wrist in Game 5 of the Western Conference semifinals against San Jose on May 5 and missed the rest of the postseason. He remains a solid early-round Fantasy pick, but expect to be without him for perhaps two Fantasy scoring periods to open the season.

Schneider is a must-start in all Fantasy leagues and a capable No. 1 rearguard in his own right.
