Former NHLer Satan Officially Hangs Up His Skates

News: Miroslav Satan announced his retirement Tuesday following his final game with Slovakia in the 2014 IIHF World Championship, NHL.com reports.
Analysis: The 39-year-old had been playing across the pond the last few years, most recently appearing in the NHL with the Bruins in 2009-10. Though Miroslav Satan's NHL career spanned 14 seasons and five teams, he enjoyed his best seasons with the Sabres, scoring a career-high 40 goals during Buffalo's run to the Stanley Cup finals in the 1998-99 campaign.

Satan has clinching goal vs. Sabres

News: Bruins RW Miroslav Satan scored a goal, tallied an assist and finished at plus-2 during Game 6 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals against the Sabres. With five minutes left, Satan made a move to get Ryan Miller out of position but hit the post. Then just a few seconds later, he waited for a pass from Dennis Wideman at the side of the net and tucked it around Miller to make it 4-2. Boston won the game, 4-3, and took the series, 4-2.
Analysis: Satan had a pretty good quarterfinal round with two goals and five points in six games. He had nine goals and 14 points in 38 games during the regular season. Satan didn't come out of semi-retirement until January. There is no telling what he might do after the season. If Satan returns to the NHL in 2010-11, he will be nothing more than a low-end Fantasy flier.

Satan recovers from groin issue

News: Bruins RW Miroslav Satan returned to the lineup on Monday against the Bruins after missing two games with a groin injury. He had no points in 16:10 of ice time and finished at minus-1. Satan has no points in his last three games.
Analysis: Satan's offensive production has been spotty since he joined the Bruins in January. His veteran presence has been good for a club that hasn't done much on offense in 2009-10, but Satan won't be a regular contributor in Fantasy. He has marginal Fantasy appeal.

Satan a game-time decision

News: The Boston Globe reports that Bruins RW Miroslav Satan (groin) will be a game-time decision Monday at New Jersey.
Analysis: Satan has missed two games with this groin injury, but he skated Monday and looks like a relatively safe start in deeper leagues for Fantasy Week 22 (March 15-21).

Satan back after 4th-place finish

News: Boston winger Miroslav Satan (hand) returned from the Olympic break and faced Montreal on Tuesday night. Satan played for the fourth-place Slovakian squad and had little trouble with the minor injury he suffered before the break.
Analysis: Satan came into Tuesday's game with six points in 18 games since being signed by Boston. He really only brings minimal Fantasy value to the table in deeper leagues.

Satan sits Saturday as expected

News: Bruins RW Miroslav Satan (hand) missed Saturday's game against Florida, as expected.
Analysis: Satan is still expected to play for Slovakia in the Olympics, so as long as he doesn't aggravate his injury in Vancouver he will be back in March for the B's. He has six points in 18 games since being signed by Boston and has minimal Fantasy value in deeper leagues at this time.

Satan won't play on Saturday

News: The Boston Globe reports Bruins RW Miroslav Satan won't play on Saturday against the Panthers because of a hand laceration sustained on Thursday against the Lightning. Coach Claude Julien didn't know if the cut would put Satan out of the Olympics.
Analysis: It would be a shame if Satan couldn't play in the Olympics because it is pretty much the whole reason he came out of semi-retirement in January. Satan has totaled just three goals and six points in 18 games since joining Boston. He is logging top-line time with Marc Savard, but it isn't doing wonders for his game. We figured Satan would make a minimal Fantasy impact and he has. Continue to treat him as a low-end flier when healthy.

Satan scores before getting injured

News: Miroslav Satan scored for the Bruins on Thursday against the Lightning before leaving the game with a cut on one of his hands caused by a skate. The team did not disclose which hand was injured, and said his status would be updated Friday.
Analysis: Satan scored for the first time in 12 games on Thursday. Satan has totaled just three goals and six points in 18 games since joining Boston in January. He is logging top-line time with Marc Savard, but it isn't doing wonders for his game. We figured Satan would make a minimal Fantasy impact and he has. Continue to treat him as a low-end flier when healthy.

Satan has no points in eight games

News: The Sports Xchange reports RW Miroslav Satan has no points in the last eight games and no goals in the last 10 after failing to get on the board Sunday in Montreal.
Analysis: Satan has totaled just two goals and four points in 16 games since joining Boston in January. He is logging top-line time with Marc Savard, but it isn't doing wonders for his game. We figured Satan would make a minimal Fantasy impact and he has. Continue to treat him as a low-end flier.

Satan does well in Bruins debut

News: Miroslav Satan made his Bruins debut on Tuesday against the Senators playing on a line with Blake Wheeler and David Krejci. Satan, who signed as a free agent on Sunday, was on the ice for both of Wheeler's goals and finished plus-two. "For a guy who hasn't played at all this year and he has only had two practices with our hockey club, he's obviously in pretty good shape and I thought he wasn't bad at all," head coach Claude Julien said.
Analysis: Before we get overly excited like Julien, we will wait to see how Satan holds up when he starts playing more games. Boston brought Satan in for his veteran presence and to hopefully provide a spark on offense. It worked on Tuesday. Still, Satan has low-end Fantasy appeal until further notice.

Satan to see top-line time?

News: The Sports Xchange reports that Bruins RW Miroslav Satan, who will make his Boston debut on Tuesday, is expected to slide onto the left wing next to top-line C Marc Savard.
Analysis: Satan is a bit of an unknown quantity at this time, but so was Maxim Afinogenov, who didn't sign with Atlanta until right before the season and has been nothing short of spectacular. The veteran might not be able to help kick-start a poor Bruins offense on his own, but he's certainly worth a look in deeper leagues.

Satan to make Bruins debut Tuesday

News: The Boston Globe reports that Bruins RW Miroslav Satan will make his debut for Boston on Tuesday at Ottawa.
Analysis: The 35-year-old Satan had 17 goals in 65 games last season for Pittsburgh, but no one took a shot with him this offseason. Selected to Slovakia's Olympic team last week, he has 354 goals and 367 assists in 1,012 NHL games with Edmonton, Buffalo, the New York Islanders and Pittsburgh. It's not clear how much of a role Satan will have with Boston, but his offensive game has really slipped the last couple of seasons. Only take a flier on him in deeper leagues at this point.

Penguins recall Satan

News: Longtime NHL forward Miroslav Satan has cleared waivers and been recalled by Pittsburgh as the Penguins end the regular season and head to the playoffs. The moved was announced Friday.
Analysis: Satan had 17 goals and 19 assists in 65 games with Pittsburgh before being sent to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL in a salary cap move at the March 4 trading deadline. Satan was demoted after Pittsburgh picked up forwards Bill Guerin, Chris Kunitz and Craig Adams before the deadline. At Wilkes-Barre, Satan had three goals and six assists in 10 games. He rejoins the Penguins in time for Saturday's regular-season finale at Montreal and the start of the playoffs next week. Ignore him in all Fantasy formats.

Satan and Pens nearing agreement

News: According to The Sports Xchange, the Penguins are close to reaching an agreement with wing Miroslav Satan regarding his future with the organization. An announcement could come Wednesday. Satan, assigned March 4 to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for salary-cap reasons, has neither been asked to report nor has he reported. He has been in New York as his representatives and Penguins general manager Ray Shero attempt to work out details regarding Satan's status. Satan, 34, scored 17 goals with the Penguins before his demotion. He signed a one-year contract worth $3.5 million in July, but the Penguins cannot fit his salary under the NHL's $56.7 million cap because of recent acquisitions (wings Chris Kunitz, Bill Guerin and Craig Adams) and the potential for defenseman Philippe Boucher's return from the long-term injured reserve list.
Analysis: Satan was sent to the minors after Pittsburgh added Bill Guerin at the trade deadline a week ago. He has been a disappointing Fantasy option after a hot start to the season. Wait to see how this whole drama plays out before using him in any rosters. He can be held on to however if you have a spot on your bench available as he could re-emerge.

Satan assigned to AHL

News: The Penguins assigned RW Miroslav Satan to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL Wednesday a day after placing the forward on waivers.
Analysis: Satan was sent to the minors after Pittsburgh added Bill Guerin at the trade deadline Wednesday. The Penguins are trying to get Satan back on the roster, but right now it's a salary cap issue. His time in the minors could be short, but with so much uncertainty, Satan just isn't a good play in Fantasy at this time. He has been a disappointing Fantasy option after a hot start to the season.

Miroslav Satan

Satan placed on waivers, will play

News: The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports Penguins forward Miroslav Satan will be in uniform Tuesday against the Lightning despite the fact he was placed on waivers earlier in the day. The 34-year-old forward still can be claimed by any team, and the Penguins also have the option of pulling him off waivers. If Satan clears waivers, Pittsburgh could send him to Wilkes-Barre/Scranto of the AHL, where his salary would not count against the current cap.
Analysis: Satan signed a one-year deal as a free agent in July. He scored his 17th goal Sunday in a win at Dallas -- his second consecutive game with a scored and his third in seven games since interim coach Dan Bylsma replaced Michel Therrien. However, he hasn't been the spark plug Pittsburgh envisioned and it seems their patience has run thin. Satan should likely be kept reserved in Fantasy until we have a clear picture on his situation.

Satan has two-point outing

News: Penguins RW Miroslav Satan scored a goal, tallied an assist and finished at plus-1 during Friday's game against the Blackhawks. Satan's goal, four seconds after a Penguins' power-play expired, gave Pittsburgh a 3-2 lead with 1:36 left in the second. Satan converted a rebound of Ruslan Fedotenko's shot following a turnover by Kris Versteeg. He has two goals in his last five games.
Analysis: Satan's playing time has fluctuated since Dan Byslma took over as head coach and he still appears in the coach's doghouse despite Michel Therrien leaving town. Until Satan can pick up the production, he remains a low-end Fantasy forward.

Satan has first goal for new coach

News: Penguins RW Miroslav Satan scored a goal and finished at plus-1 during Thursday's 5-4 win against the Canadiens. Satan's first goal in eight games and only his second in 14 games put Pittsburgh up 2-1 as he redirected Ryan Whitney's slap shot. It was his 15th goal of the season.
Analysis: Satan was on the outs with coach Michel Therrien before he was replaced by interim coach Dan Bylsma. In two games since the coaching change, Satan has logged more than 30 minutes and it appears he will get a chance to rectify his offensive game down the stretch. Until Satan can pick up the production, he remains a low-end Fantasy forward.

Satan, coach have growing tension

News: The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports there is growing tension between struggling Penguins forward Miroslav Satan and coach Michel Therrien. Satan, who began the season as a top-line winger, played only 9:37 in Sunday's 3-0 loss to the Red Wings. Therrien declined to provide a specific reason for Satan's limited ice time. "No, he didn't play a lot," Therrien said.
Analysis: Therrien threatened to bench Satan earlier in the week against Tampa Bay, but kept the veteran in the lineup to play his 1,000th game. Satan has played less than 10 minutes only twice this season. Satan, who inked a one-year deal in the offseason, has scored just twice in his last 18 games and has been pretty non-existent for Pittsburgh since December. The fact he is in the coach's doghouse is never a good sign. Pittsburgh tried to replace Marian Hossa with Satan, but it hasn't gone as scripted. He has very low-end Fantasy appeal at this time.

Satan has one goal in last 18

News: The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Penguins RW Miroslav Satan has the spotlight on him after managing just one goal in his last 18 games. "He certainly needs to be better, in terms of production," general manager Ray Shero said Thursday.
Analysis: Since the month of December, Satan has been slipping further and further from the red hot start he got off to when the season began. He has 30 points on the season but had looked like he was on his way to so much more. He is a low-end option for now, until he gets it together.

Satan has a goal and an assist

News: Pittsburgh RW Miroslav Satan scored a goal and added an assist in a 6-3 loss to the Capitals on Wednesday. Satan has at least one point in back to back games after going five games without even one.
Analysis: Since the month of December, Satan has been slipping further and further from the red hot start he got off to when the season began. He has 28 points on the season but had looked like he was on his way to so much more. He is a low-end option for now, until he gets it together.

Satan's goal drought at 12 games

News: Penguins RW Miroslav Satan has gone 12 games without a goal after failing to score Saturday against the Avalanche. The 34-year-old forward last scored Dec. 18 against the Thrashers and has just three points during his drought.
Analysis: Satan was dropped to the fourth line for a game during his recent drought as coach Michel Therrien hoped it would get him back on track. Wrong. Satan was one of the Penguins' top scorers to begin the season but has been on the decline since Dec. 1. He plays with two of the best playmakers in the NHL -- Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin -- and shouldn't have this much trouble scoring. Until Satan gets back on track he remains a low-end Fantasy option.

Miroslav Satan

Satan skates on fourth line

News: The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Penguins RW Miroslav Satan was demoted to the fourth line during Monday's shutout loss to the Rangers. "We expect more," Coach Michel Therrien said about Satan. "More intensity from his game."
Analysis: Satan has just one assist in his last seven games, so it's not only intensity missing from him at the moment, it's points as well. Usually a decent No. 3 or No. 4 Fantasy forward, Satan should be benched in smaller leagues until he starts to pick up the pace.

Satan notches third December goal

News: Penguins RW Miroslav Satan scored a goal and finished at minus-2 during Thursday's game against the Thrashers. The veteran winger notched his 12th goal on a power-play tally 5:54 into the second period to put Pittsburgh ahead 4-1. Satan has three goals and two assists in eight December games.
Analysis: Satan's scoring has slowed down a bit after he was one of the Pens' top goal scorers in October, but he does have 16 points in his last 20 games. Continue to view him as a decent No. 3 or No. 4 Fantasy forward.
