Denis recalled by Canadiens

News: Facing former goaltending partner Cristobal Huet, Canadiens G Carey Price came within 7:42 of recording his first shutout in over four months during a 4-1 win against the Blackhawks Tuesday. Price allowed Patrick Sharp's 26th goal after Montreal built a 3-0 lead. He made 28 saves as he and the Canadiens improved to 3-0-1 in their last four games.
Analysis: The 31-year-old Denis stopped six of seven New Jersey Devils shots on Jan. 2 during his only appearance with the Canadiens this season. He has gone from a starter to backup to organizational depth. Denis is not worth owning in any Fantasy format at this time.

Denis up to cover for ill Halak

News: The Canadiens have called up G Marc Denis to cover for Jaroslav Halak, who has the flu.
Analysis: Denis has plenty of NHL experience, but a few bad seasons has him as a No. 3 now. He has little to no Fantasy value until further notice.

Denis sent down to AHL

News: Carey Price is ready to return for the Montreal Canadiens, and is one step closer to achieving his offseason goal of starting the NHL All-Star game in front of his home crowd. Price was elected in fan voting to start Sunday's showcase game at the Bell Centre, but missed the last eight games with an ankle injury that put his appearance at risk. "I haven't been verbally told, but I haven't been verbally told I'm not going, either," Price said following practice Monday. "First and foremost you've got to get back to 100 percent and I feel like I am. It's not my decision in the end." Price, in his second season, is scheduled to start for the Eastern Conference squad. Canadiens coach Guy Carbonneau -- the East's assistant coach -- said last week that he didn't expect Price to play Sunday if he was unable to first return with the Canadiens this week. Veteran goalie Marc Denis was sent to Hamilton of the AHL on Sunday night, clearing the way for Price's return to the lineup.
Analysis: Denis made one relief appearance for backup Jaroslav Halak, who started all eight games during Price's absence, including a 5-4 shootout win in Ottawa on Saturday night. Denis has plenty of NHL experience, but a few bad seasons has him toiling in the minors at this time. Denis has little to no Fantasy value until further notice.

Denis could get start Wednesday

News: The Montreal Gazette reports that Canadiens G Marc Denis could get his first NHL start in over a year when Montreal visit the Rangers on Wednesday.
Analysis: Denis has valuable NHL experience, but is just third on the Canadiens' depth chart at this time and is only up while Carey Price and Jaroslav Halak deal with injuries. He should be back in the minors shortly, so keep him off Fantasy radars.

Denis gets some work after recall

News: Canadiens G Jaroslav Halak got the start Friday against the Devils in place of the injured Carey Price (lower body). Too bad he couldn't finish out the game in a 4-1 loss. Halak lasted just two period before giving way to Marc Denis, who was called up from Hamilton (AHL) Thursday. Halak made 19 saves while allowing three goals, and Denis stopped six of seven shots.
Analysis: Denis made his first appearance in the NHL in more than a year Friday. Denis has valuable NHL experience, but is just third on the Canadiens' depth chart at this time. He should be back in the minors shortly, so keep him off Fantasy radars.

Denis sent back down

News: The Canadiens returned G Marc Denis to Hamilton of the AHL. Denis served as Canadiens G Jaroslav Halak's backup the previous three games and didn't make an appearance.
Analysis: Denis had a 12-6-0 record with Hamilton, as well as a 2.60 GAA and .915 save percentage. He is now back in the minors, so continue to ignore him in Fantasy.

Canadiens add Denis to roster

News: The Sporting News reports Canadiens goalie Carey Price missed Friday's practice because of the flu and Jaroslav Halak will start in goal Saturday against the Capitals. Veteran Marc Denis of AHL Hamilton has been called up and is on standby in case Price cannot dress for the game.
Analysis: Denis had a 12-6-0 record with Hamilton, as well as a 2.60 GAA and .915 save percentage. He has plenty of NHL experience, but currently is buried on the depth chart in Montreal. He could be back in the minors shortly, so continue to ignore him in Fantasy.

Denis sent down to the minors

News: Following Saturday's preseason game against the Wild, the Canadiens sent goalie Marc Denis, defenseman Yannick Weber and left wing Max Pacioretty to Hamilton of the AHL.
Analysis: Denis latched on with Montreal in the offseason after a very disappointing 2007-08 with Tampa Bay. He could not beat out Jaroslav Halak for backup duties, so Denis will now begin the season in the minors. Continue to ignore him in Fantasy.

Denis finds home with Montreal

News: The Canadiens signed goalie Marc Denis on Thursday. Denis, bought out by the Tampa Bay Lightning last month, signed a one-year deal.
Analysis: Denis begins the season as the No. 3 goalie behind Carey Price and Jaroslav Halak, and will likely begin the season in Hamilton of the American Hockey League. The 30-year-old Denis is 112-179-28 for his NHL career with a 3.02 goals against average and .902 save percentage. Ignore him in most Fantasy formats until he returns to the NHL.

Marc Denis

Denis, Lightning part ways

News: The Tampa Bay Lightning bought out the final season of goalie Marc Denis' contract Wednesday. Denis, who appeared in 54 games with Tampa Bay, was due to earn $3 million next season. He spent much of last season with the Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League, playing in just 10 games for the Lightning. "Needless to say, we are all sorry things didn't work out differently for Marc with our organization," general manager Jay Feaster said.
Analysis: Tampa Bay obtained Denis from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for Fredrik Modin and Fredrik Norrena in June 2006. Denis was 1-5-0 with a 4.05 GAA in 2007-08. He is 112-179-28 in 348 career games since 1996-97. Denis could latch on with another team, but seems destined to be a backup goalie. Ignore him in most Fantasy formats until he finds a new home.

Lightning recall goalie Denis

News: The Tampa Bay Lightning recalled goalie Marc Denis from Norfolk of the American Hockey League on Wednesday. Denis replaces goalie Jonathan Boutin, who was reassigned to Norfolk a day after the Lightning recalled him from the minor league team on an emergency basis because starting goalie Mike Smith has a sprained left ankle. Smith, who was hurt in practice Monday, is listed day to day.
Analysis: Denis began the season with the Lightning and was assigned to Norfolk on Dec. 29. He played in 28 games with the Admirals, going 9-15-2 with a 3.02 goals-against average and .905 save percentage. He has appeared in 348 NHL games with Colorado, Columbus and Tampa Bay. Ignore him in all Fantasy formats at this time.

Denis clears waivers, heading to Tampa

News: Lightning G Marc Denis has cleared waivers and is on his way to Tampa, according to the St. Pete Times.
Analysis: Denis was getting paid a hefty sum to sit in the AHL, so the Lightning will likely want to get him some work in the last week or so of the season. Continue to ignore him in all Fantasy formats at this time.

Denis placed on re-entry waivers

News: The Tampa Tribune reports that G Marc Denis has been put on re-entry waivers and could join the Lightning on Wednesday if he clears. His presence is needed because starter Mike Smith injured his knee in Monday's practice.
Analysis: Denis is getting paid a hefty sum to sit in the AHL right now, so the Lightning might want to get him some work in the last week or so of the season. Continue to ignore him in all Fantasy formats at this time.

Denis clears waivers, joins AHL

News: Lightning G Marc Denis cleared waivers Saturday and was reassigned to Norfolk of the AHL. Denis, in his ninth NHL season, has been a major disappointment since being acquired from Columbus in a June 2006 trade and signing a three-year, $8.6 million contract. He appeared in 10 games this season, going 1-5 with a 4.05 goals-against average and .859 save percentage.
Analysis: Denis had been scratched in four straight games before Friday, so this move was predicted by many. If his contract wasn't as hefty as it is, Denis would certainly find himself getting another chance on a different team, but he'll have to toil in the minors for now. Obviously, he has no Fantasy value while there.

Lightning place Denis on waivers

News: As expected, the Tampa Bay Lightning placed backup G Marc Denis on waivers Friday. Denis, in his ninth NHL season, has been a major disappointment since being acquired from Columbus in a June 2006 trade and signing a three-year, $8.6 million contract. He appeared in 10 games this season, going 1-5 with a 4.05 goals-against average and .859 save percentage. If the 30-year-old clears waivers Saturday, the Lightning plan to reassign him to Norfolk of the American Hockey League.
Analysis: Denis had been scratched in four straight games before Friday, so this move was predicted by many. If his contract wasn't as hefty as it is, Denis would certainly find himself getting another chance on a different team, but he is likely to clear waivers and end up in the minors. He's not worth owning in anything but super-deep leagues at this point.

Denis scratched in fourth straight

News: Lightning G Marc Denis, who lost his starting role last season, has been a healthy scratch in four straight games. Denis, who is in the second season of a three-year, $8.6 million contract, could soon be placed on waivers.
Analysis: It looks like the Lightning are going to roll with Johan Holmqvist and Karri Ramo as their goaltending duo for now, unless they make a trade for someone. With as poorly as the Lightning are playing at the moment, all goalies and the team goalie should be avoided at all costs.

Marc Denis, G, MON Denis won't start Thursday

Marc Denis

Denis won't start Thursday

News: Tampa radio station WDAE 620 The Sports Animal reports that Karri Ramo will start in goal for Tampa Bay Thursday against Toronto. In six games for Norfolk of the AHL, Ramo went 2-4 with a 3.33 GAA. Ramo suffered a high ankle sprain in the season opener, which forced him to miss about a month of action.
Analysis: The goaltending in Tampa Bay has been unreliable and inconsistent. Coming into Tuesday's loss to Atlanta, Johan Holmqvist and Marc Denis had combined to give the Lightning the highest team goals-against average (3.21) and lowest save percentage (.882). Holmqvist was pulled Tuesday in favor of backup Denis for the third time in four starts. Denis started the second period after Holmqvist gave up three goals on nine first-period shots. If Ramo gets hot, he'll get as many starts as he can handle. And with this offense as high-powered as it is, he should be handed plenty of leads. Consider him in larger yearly and keeper leagues.

Denis gets some work Tuesday

News: Lightning G Johan Holmqvist lasted just one period during Tuesday's 6-2 loss against the Thrashers. Holmqvist stopped six of nine shots before being replaced by Marc Denis to open the second period. Denis wasn't much better by allowing three goals on 15 shots.
Analysis: Despite all of Holmqvist's struggles as of late, the Lightning continue to use Denis sparingly. Denis is only worth a look as a low-end No. 3 Fantasy option in cumulative leagues or in formats which average points per game in a scoring period.

Denis struggles in relief effort

News: Lightning goalies Johan Holmqvist and Marc Denis both had nights to forget during a 9-6 loss to the Flames Thursday. Holmqvist lasted just 13:05 and allowed four goals on six shots. Denis finished out the game, but allowed four goals on 25 shots.
Analysis: Denis just picked up his first win of the season Tuesday and was then needed again Thursday. Holmqvist is struggling right now, but still holds a firm grasp on the top job in Tampa. Denis is only worth a look as a low-end No. 3 Fantasy option in cumulative leagues or in formats which average points per game in a scoring period.

Marc Denis wins first Tuesday

News: G Marc Denis stopped Tomas Plekanec, Andrei Kostitsyn and Saku Koivu in Tuesday's shootout at Montreal after turning aside 28 shots during the game to claim his first victory of the season. He allowed just two goals.
Analysis: Denis stopped 18 of 20 shootout attempts last season for a .900 save percentage, the highest success rate of any goalie who faced six or more shots in the tie-breaking format. Holmqvist had trouble Monday in Toronto and he has been a streaky goalie this season. He, as well as the Lightning TG, remain No. 2 Fantasy options. Denis remains his backup and is worth considering in larger leagues after this win.

Denis comes in for relief

News: Tampa head coach John Tortorella yanked goalie Johan Holmqvist after Toronto's fourth goal Monday in favor of Marc Denis. Holmqvist gave up four goals on 21 shots. Denis gave up two goals on seven shots.
Analysis: Holmqvist has allowed more than three goals just once in his past six appearances. Actually, he has allowed 15 goals in that span, giving him a solid 2.50 GAA. Holmqvist has been a streaky goalie this season and we expect that trend to continue. He, as well as the Lightning TG, remain No. 2 Fantasy options. Denis remains his backup and is barely worth considering in larger leagues.

Denis loses to Red Wings

News: Marc Denis stopped 35 shots in the Lightning's sixth straight loss Thursday against the Red Wings. He allowed four goals.
Analysis: Denis is only worth a look as a low-end No. 3 Fantasy option in cumulative leagues or in formats which average points per game in a scoring period since he can't take the starting job from Johan Holmqvist. The Lightning TG is worth a look as a No. 1 unit.

Denis remains on bench

News: G Marc Denis has not played since Nov. 1 at the Islanders, a nine-game stretch of inactivity.
Analysis: Denis is only worth a look as a low-end No. 3 Fantasy option in cumulative leagues or in formats which average points per game in a scoring period.

Denis drops to 0-3-0

News: The Lightning got 28 saves from Marc Denis on Thursday against the Islanders, but it wasn't enough as New York won 4-0. Denis is now 0-3-0 in his four appearances.
Analysis: Denis has made just two starts this season and has yet to show head coach John Tortorella he deserves more time in net. Denis is only worth a look as a No. 3 Fantasy option in cumulative leagues or in formats which average points per game in a scoring period. The Lightning TG is more of a No. 2 Fantasy option.

Denis allows four in loss

News: Marc Denis allowed four goals on 28 shots in Wednesday's game at Washington and the Capitals were able to post an empty-net score to seal the victory. "It's too early to say that it's a struggle," Denis said. "Last year, we were one of the best road teams in the whole league."
Analysis: Denis didn't do much to show coach John Tortorella he is deserving of more playing time, so look for Johan Holmqvist to continue to see a majority of the starts. Denis is only worth a look as a No. 3 Fantasy option in cumulative leagues or low-end No. 2 in formats which average points per game in a scoring period.
