Chicago Inks Veteran O'Donnell

News: O'Donnell has signed a one-year contract with the Blackhawks, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Analysis: O'Donnell is not flashy, but he is talented enough to get the job done on the blue line. Rarely does he turn up a minus in the plus/minus category, and even though he'll turn 40 years old on October 13, age shouldn't be a big issue, for what he has lost in speed is countered by his hockey smarts and veteran leadership on the ice.

Flyers' O'Donnell Goes Plus-Three In Return

News: O'Donnell made a productive return from his one-game absence Thursday in a win over the Islanders, notching an assist and going plus-3.
Analysis: Plus-minus is the best part of O'Donnell's limited fantasy game, as the 39-year-old is plus-10 on the season, still effective as ever at shutting down opposing offenses. He skated 17:41 and seemed healthy.

Flyers' O'Donnell Expects To Play Thursday

News: O'Donnell (sprained left knee) says that he will play Thursday against the Islanders, csnphilly.com reports.
Analysis: O'Donnell, who has 12 points and 60 PIMs in 59 games to date, was originally expected to miss more time, but after skating Wednesday he proclaimed himself ready to go.

Flyers' O'Donnell Out 10-14 Days

News: O'Donnell will miss the next 10-14 days due to a knee injury suffered in Sunday's win over the Rangers, according to Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News.
Analysis: O'Donnell isn't much of a scorer, but there's no denying he's been a strong veteran presence on the Philly blue line all season and he almost never posts a seasonal minus rating, so he'll be missed. Still, the Flyers have a pretty comfortable lead in the East, so we don't think his injury will derail the team's successful season. Just something to note if you own a Flyers goalie.

Flyers' O'Donnell Suffers Injury Sunday

News: O'Donnell suffered an apparent lower-body injury when he collided along the boards with the Rangers' Mats Zuccarello in the first period Sunday.
Analysis: He appeared to tangle skates with Zuccarello and went down awkwardly. The veteran stay-at-home blueliner has been a solid defensive presence for the Flyers this year.

Flyers' O'Donnell Playing With Efficiency

News: O'Donnell is averaging 16:36 of ice time to complement a plus-14 rating in 2010-11.
Analysis: At 39, O'Donnell is the oldest skater the Flyers have on board. Rather than being a prominent contributor with the puck, the journeyman plays a tight physical game in the defensive zone. Last Thursday, in a 6-2 win over Ottawa, the veteran picked up 15 penalty minutes thanks to a fighting major and a game misconduct penalty, showing the hockey world that if there is any gas left in his tank, it comes in the form of physicality and grit.

O'Donnell records second goal

News: Kings D Sean O'Donnell scored a goal during Thursday's game against the Sabres. O'Donnell, who accidentally deflected a shot by Thomas Vanek into his own net earlier, tied it at 2 only 55 seconds before the second intermission with a slap shot from the left point while Kings forward Michal Handzus set up a screen. The goal came five seconds after Buffalo killed off Chris Butler's tripping penalty. It was O'Donnell's second goal of the season.
Analysis: O'Donnell has pretty much done his job in 2009-10. He is not a great offensive player, but he is a great forechecker and is a solid penalty killer. He is also a great veteran presence. He is best used in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for short-handed stats and PIM when active.

O'Donnell has first goal since 2007

News: The Sports Xchange reports Kings D Sean O'Donnell scored the game-winning goal in the third period on Tuesday against the Oilers, which broke a streak of 157 games in which O'Donnell hadn't scored a goal. O'Donnell last scored on Dec. 22, 2007, when he was with the Anaheim Ducks.
Analysis: The Kings have a pretty good core of blueliners and can go seven deep. O'Donnell still plays most nights because of his defense and mean streak, but he will sit on occasion. He is best used in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for short-handed stats and PIM when active.

O'Donnell still searching for goal

News: Kings D Sean O'Donnell totaled no points and finished at minus-2 in 19:55 of ice time Wednesday against the Sharks. He has no points in his last five games and still has no goals in 28 appearances this season.
Analysis: O'Donnell hasn't scored since joining Los Angeles in 2008-09. That's not the reason why he is a healthy scratch at times for Los Angeles. The Kings have a pretty good core of blueliners and can go seven deep. O'Donnell still plays most nights because of his defense and mean streak, but he will sit on occasion. He is best used in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for short-handed stats and PIM when active.

Analysis: O'Donnell is a good defensive player but has marginal offensive skills. He is best used in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for short-handed stats and PIM when active.

O'Donnell due back from suspension

News: The Sports Xchange reports Kings D Sean O'Donnell missed his second consecutive game Tuesday to wrap up the five-game suspension he received during the preseason. O'Donnell is expected to be in the lineup Thursday when the Kings host the Minnesota Wild.
Analysis: O'Donnell joined the Kings prior to the 2008-09 season after Anaheim needed to dump some salary. It proved to be a great addition for the Kings since O'Donnell played in all 82 games and was a great veteran presence. However, he still wasn't a major Fantasy factor because he had no goals and 12 points. O'Donnell is a good defensive player but has marginal offensive skills. He is best used in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for short-handed stats and PIM when active.

O'Donnell suspended by NHL

News: Los Angeles Kings defenseman Sean O'Donnell has been suspended five games, including the first two of the regular season, for a match penalty during a preseason game against the New York Islanders. The NHL announced the suspension Wednesday after O'Donnell was penalized in the previous night's game for a cross-check on the Islanders' Matt Martin.
Analysis: O'Donnell will miss Los Angeles' final three preseason games and will be eligible to return in the Kings' third game of the season, against Minnesota on Oct. 8. O'Donnell joined the Kings prior to the 2008-09 season after Anaheim needed to dump some salary. It proved to be a great addition for the Kings since O'Donnell played in all 82 games and was a great veteran presence. O'Donnell is Kings' senior blueliner

News: The Sports Xchange reports D Sean O'Donnell is, at age 37, by far the Kings' oldest defenseman. Rob Scuderi, the next most "senior" defenseman, is 30, and the Kings have a strong stable of defensemen who are 25 and under. If the Kings make a move before the start of the season, it would likely be for a veteran defenseman who could help O'Donnell with team leadership and also be a strong puck-moving defenseman on a team that, with O'Donnell, Scuderi and Matt Greene, already has plenty of grit.
O'Donnell signs extension with Kings

News: Sportsnet.ca reports that Kings D Sean O'Donnell has signed a one-year extension.
Analysis: O'Donnell has no goals this season for the Kings, but he wasn't brought in for his offensive presence. O'Donnell has provided Los Angeles with solid defense and has been great as a penalty killer. O'Donnell has limited Fantasy appeal outside of leagues that reward heavily for PIM and short-handed stats.

O'Donnell nets fourth major penalty

News: Kings D Sean O'Donnell failed to record a point and finished at plus-1 in 19:39 of ice time Wednesday against the Avalanche. He did get into a fight with Chris Stewart in the first period for his fourth major penalty of the season.

O'Donnell gets into scrum Sat.

News: Kings D Sean O'Donnell didn't record a point in 21:18 of ice time and finished at even Saturday against the Blues. He did spend five minutes in the penalty box for fighting Barret Jackman.
Analysis: O'Donnell has three assists, a plus-4 rating and 10 penalty minutes in 13 games with the Kings. He was added in a trade from Anaheim right before the season and is logging more than 21 minutes per game. He is more of a defensive-minded player and short-handed specialist, so O'Donnell has limited Fantasy appeal.

Kings acquire D O'Donnell for pick

News: The Los Angeles Kings acquired D Sean O'Donnell from the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday, receiving a conditional selection in the 2009 NHL draft in return. The 36-year-old O'Donnell played for the Kings from 1994-2000. Heading into his 14th NHL season, he has appeared in a combined 932 games with Los Angeles, Anaheim, Phoenix, Boston, New Jersey and Minnesota. He made his NHL debut with the Kings during the 1994-95 season and went on to play in 381 career games for them, totaling 12 goals, 59 assists and 799 penalty minutes. He also was in eight playoff games for Los Angeles, scoring two goals. He spent two and a half seasons with the Ducks, and was a member of their 2007 Stanley Cup championship team. O'Donnell played in all 82 regular season games last season, with two goals and seven assists. He added a goal and an assist while playing in six postseason contests.
Analysis: O'Donnell isn't going to get you many points, but he does rack up penalty minutes on the checking lines and has some minimal value in deeper leagues that reward PIM.

O'Donnell nets assist Friday

News: Ducks D Sean O'Donnell tallied an assist and finished at plus-1 during Friday's game against the Blackhawks. He now has a goal, an assist and a plus-2 rating in his last six games.
Analysis: If you are expecting a lot of points from O'Donnell, you are barking up the wrong tree. He is one of the Ducks' checking defenseman and is only worth a look in leagues that reward heavily for plus/minus ratings or PIM.

O'Donnell picks up goal, plus-2

News: D Sean O'Donnell and C Sami Pahlsson each scored a goal and posted a plus-2 rating in Sunday's game against the Red Wings.
Analysis: O'Donnell and Pahlsson are only worth Fantasy consideration in the deepest of leagues at this point. The Ducks will be back in action on Wednesday night against the Predators at Honda Center.

D O'Donnell re-signs with Ducks

News: The Anaheim Ducks have re-signed veteran D Sean O'Donnell to a two-year contract extension.
Analysis: The veteran posted 17 points in 79 games with the Ducks in 2006-07. He is way more valuable to his real team than to Fantasy owners. Only consider him in the deepest of leagues which heavily reward penalty minutes.

O'Donnell back in lineup

News: Ducks D Sean O'Donnell (flu) returned to the team's lineup Saturday against the Stars. He logged 17:58 of ice time.
Analysis: It appears safe to once again use O'Donnell in Fantasy leagues. However, O'Donnell has had a rough go of things since the start of December. He has just three assists in 25 games since Dec. 2. Needless to say, he is not recommended in most Fantasy leagues at this time.

D O’Donnell having difficulty

News: Sean O’Donnell has posted just two assists and a minus-1 rating over the past 10 games.
