Zubov signs with Russian team

News: TSN.ca reports 16-year veteran defenseman Sergei Zubov has signed a contract with Russian club SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL. The Dallas Morning News also reports Zubov's move to Russia is pretty much a done deal.
Analysis: This move is not overly surprising since the interest among NHL teams was dwindling in regard to the Russian defenseman. He endured two straight injury-plagued seasons with the Stars and NHL teams wanted assurance that he was close to 100 percent recovered (hip) before signing him. Zubov is the highest-scoring Russian-born defenseman in NHL history with 771 points in 1,068 games. His presence will definitely be missed, if no NHL team swoops in at the last second to save the day. It's safe to ignore Zubov in all Fantasy formats.

Stars unlikely to sign Zubov

News: The Sports Xchange reports loss is never easy for any team. The Stars learned that all too well last season, when their follow-up to their Western Conference final run was a postseason-less debacle that forced change at the general manager and coaching positions. Now the Stars are making tough decisions among player personnel, too. Players who have given so much so often are getting older, and that, coupled with health problems, has led to goodbyes. Sergei Zubov, the Stars' all-time leading defenseman in scoring, likely won't be in a Stars jersey after 12 seasons. As great as Zubov is when he's healthy (he can rack up a ton of minutes and is one of the smartest defensemen in the league), staying healthy has been a problem the last two seasons. That, coupled with the fact that he's 39 years old, meant the Stars were hesitant to take a chance on him for another season. "We'd love to talk to him after he has more information about his recovery," general manager Joe Nieuwendyk said. "We want to keep that door open, but we can't do it until we have more information."
Analysis: The information probably won't benefit Zubov, who has had several surgeries on an ailing hip that just doesn't seem to get better. If Zubov does sign somewhere else and stays relatively healthy, he will be a tremendous asset. But making that signing and hoping for that health is a chance the Stars aren't willing to take right now. The Blue Jackets have been a team interested in Zubov since they need a puck-moving blueliner, but there hasn't been much talk yet about the aging defenseman. Zubov will be an injury-risk Fantasy sleeper Draft Day 2009.

Columbus interested in Zubov

News: The Sports Xchange reports the Blue Jackets are believed to be interested in free agent defenseman Sergei Zubov, who has long ties with Columbus coach Ken Hitchcock.
Analysis: The 38-year-old Zubov is coming off major hip surgery and has endured two-straight injury-plagued seasons. His durability is an issue, but Columbus is in dire need of a puck-moving defenseman and Zubov fits the profile. Landing in Columbus is a good situation for Zubov, but wherever he goes he is going to be a key player -- as long as he is healthy. Zubov will be an injury-risk Fantasy sleeper Draft Day 2009.

Zubov has successful hip surgery

News: The Sports Xchange reports Stars D Sergei Zubov had successful hip surgery in Colorado in early January. He is still expected to be out the rest of the season. The 38-year-old Zubov played in 10 games this season, recording four assists. "He's got to get himself healthy," coach Dave Tippett said. "He takes pride in how he plays and he wants to be right. He's probably thinking he has to do this to try to continue his career."
Analysis: Zubov, 38, missed 35 of the last 41 regular-season games last season because of a fractured foot and a sports hernia. He returned to play 11 playoff games. He has played 10 of 31 games this season. Zubov, the highest-scoring Russian-born defenseman in NHL history, is the only defenseman with 30 or more assists in each of the last 12 seasons. He is 16th in career assists by a defenseman (619). Zubov will likely not want his career to end this way, but his body might not allow him to get back on the ice. It's safe to cut him in all seasonal formats and is only worth a flier in the deepest of keeper formats.

Zubov done for the season

News: The Dallas Morning News reports injured Stars defenseman Sergei Zubov will miss the remainder of the season after having surgery in January to address a lingering hip injury. "He's done for the season, but I'm not really sure what the recovery is -- 4, 5, 6 months -- not quick enough," Stars co-general manager Les Jackson said. "But I've talked to him and he wants to play." Zubov becomes an unrestricted free agent after the season and surgery now means he could rehabilitate in time for next season. "He's in a situation where the options he's looking at are about a serious injury," coach Dave Tippett said. "It's a legitimate concern.... He will have to consider in his own mind where he is in his career."

Sergei Zubov, D, DAL Zubov out indefinitely post-surgery

Sergei Zubov

Zubov out indefinitely post-surgery

News: The Stars announced Thursday that injured defenseman Sergei Zubov will have hip surgery in January and will be out indefinitely. The surgery will be performed by a hip specialist in Colorado. The 38-year-old defenseman has collected four helpers in 10 games, but has missed the last eight contests due to the hip injury. He also missed the first 12 games while recovering from pre-season hip surgery.
Analysis: The Moscow native is the highest-scoring Russian-born defenseman in NHL history, and is the only blue-liner in the league to collect 30-or-more assists in each of the last 12 seasons. Zubov ranks 16th in NHL history in assists by a defenseman (619), and 17th among all-time blueliners in points (771), and is third among active NHL defensemen in both assists and points (behind Chris Chelios and Nicklas Lidstrom). However, he has been plagued by injuries the last two seasons and Father Time could be catching up with the veteran defenseman. Keep the high-end Fantasy option reserved until further notice.

Zubov finds way to injured reserve

News: The Stars placed defenseman Sergei Zubov on the injured list and recalled Dan Jancevski from Hamilton of the AHL on Thursday. The 38-year-old Zubov has missed Dallas' last five games after injuring his hip in November.
Analysis: Zubov has four assists in 10 games this season and ranks third in franchise history for games played (839) and assists (438), and is five points behind Bobby Smith for fifth on the club's career scoring list. Zubov has had two straight injury-plagued seasons and hasn't really been able to get going offensively in 2008-09. He has high-end Fantasy potential, but first Zubov has to get healthy. Leave him on your bench for the time being.

No timetable for Zubov

News: The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports there is no timetable for the return of Stars D Sergei Zubov (lower body).
Analysis: Zubov has had two straight injury-plagued seasons and hasn't really been able to get going offensively in 2008-09. He has high-end Fantasy potential, but first Zubov has to get healthy. Leave him on your bench for the time being.

Sergei Zubov

Zubov out for at least a week

News: Stars coach Dave Tippett said Sunday that D Sergei Zubov (lower body) will be out for at least another week.
Analysis: Zubov has had two straight injury-plagued seasons and hasn't really been able to get going offensively in 2008-09. He has high-end Fantasy potential, but first Zubov has to get healthy. Leave him on your bench for Fantasy Week 9 (Dec. 1-7) and hope this isn't another hip issue.

Sergei Zubov

Zubov out with lower-body injury

News: Stars D Sergei Zubov was held out of Sunday's game against the Oilers because of a lower-body injury. He is day-to-day and questionable heading into Tuesday's game against the Flames.
Analysis: We definitely don't want to hear about a lower-body injury with Zubov after he missed the first 12 games of the season with a hip injury. If he re-aggravated the injury, he could be on the shelf again for a long time. Zubov has had two straight injury-plagued seasons and hasn't really been able to get going offensively in 2008-09. He has high-end Fantasy potential, but first Zubov has to get healthy. Consider him an injury-risk start Week 9 (Dec. 1-7).

Sergei Zubov

Zubov starting to heat up

News: Stars D Sergei Zubov tallied an assist and finished at minus-1 in 24:47 of ice time Saturday against the Coyotes. Zubov now has an assist in three straight games.
Analysis: Zubov made his season debut Nov. 7 after missing the first month with a hip injury. He didn't have a point in his first two games, but has managed to tally in the last three. He is finally getting his legs back under him and that's great news for Fantasy owners. Zubov is a top offensive talent when healthy and must-start Fantasy option.

Zubov gets first point of season

News: Stars D Sergei Zubov, in only his third game of the season following offseason hip surgery, claimed an assist in a loss to the Kings on Tuesday for his first point of the season.
Analysis: Zubov is one of the better offensive defensemen in the NHL, but it might take him a while to get back into the swing of things. He's certainly worth starting in all formats right now, however.

Zubov makes debut, Stars win

News: The Stars activated defenseman Sergei Zubov from injured reserve in time for Friday's game against the Ducks. Zubov missed all of training camp and the first 12 games of the season after undergoing hip surgery in September. He was out about half of last season with various ailments, including a sports hernia that required his second surgery on that injury in less than a year. The Stars have missed him. Usually one of the league's better defensive teams, Dallas is last in the NHL in goals-against average (4.17) and tied for the fewest points in the Western Conference (10) after going to the conference finals last year. Zubov led Dallas with 21:09 of ice time in his season debut and helped them to a 5-2 win.
Analysis: No one is probably happier to see Zubov back on the ice then Marty Turco, who has gotten off to a poor start without him. The second happiest is Fantasy owners since Zubov is one of the better offensive defensemen in the NHL. As long as he doesn't suffer any setbacks, feel free to activate Zubov for Fantasy Week 3 (Nov. 10-16).

Zubov still on track for Friday

News: Stars D Sergei Zubov, who has been out all season with a hip problem, practiced Wednesday and remains on track to return Friday at Anaheim.
Analysis: Fantasy owners have waited for this all season and it finally appears as though Zubov will get onto the ice Friday. The veteran has been injury-prone the last two seasons, but Zubov is still a top offensive defenseman and must-start Fantasy option when healthy.

Zubov due back next Friday

News: Stars D Sergei Zubov, who has not played this season due to hip injury, is expected to return next Friday at Anaheim. Zubov will have spent the 24-day minimum for a long-term IR stint after Saturday's game against the Bruins.
Analysis: Fantasy owners have waited for this all season and it finally appears as though Zubov will get onto the ice Week 5 (Nov. 3-9). The Stars play just two games in the upcoming scoring period, but Zubov is worth adding in all Fantasy formats (owned 63 percent). He has been injury-prone the last two season, but Zubov is still a top offensive defenseman and must-start Fantasy option when healthy.

Zubov's return pushed back

News: The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that Stars D Sergei Zubov won't return on Saturday, as his minimum 24-day stay on the long-term IR list doesn't expire until after that game.
Analysis: Zubov played in only 46 games last season because of a sports hernia and foot injury. He is about to enter his 16th NHL season, and at 38-years-old, he is no young pup. Zubov is a must-start Fantasy option when healthy, but you're probably better off keeping him reserved through Fantasy Week 5 (Nov. 3-9), as he'll only play in two games at most that period.

Zubov practicing, targeting Nov. 1

News: The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that Stars D Sergei Zubov is practicing with his team and targeting a Nov. 1 return to action. Zubov has been out all season with a hip injury.
Analysis: Zubov played in only 46 games last season because of a sports hernia and foot injury. He is about to enter his 16th NHL season, and at 38-years-old, he is no young pup. Zubov is a must-start Fantasy option when healthy, but keep him reserved for Fantasy Week 4 (Oct. 27-Nov. 2).

Zubov placed on long-term IR

News: The Stars placed D Sergei Zubov on long-term IR Wednesday, which means he's not expected to return until after Oct. 31.
Analysis: Zubov played in only 46 games last season because of a sports hernia and foot injury. Now, he is going to miss the first three weeks of the 2008-09 season. Zubov is about to enter his 16th NHL season, and at 38-years-old, he is no young pup. Zubov is a must-start Fantasy option when healthy, but he is out until at least November now, so be sure to bench him.

Sergei Zubov

Zubov out at least a month

News: The Stars announced Thursday that defenseman Sergei Zubov had arthroscopic hip surgery and is expected to be sidelined at least one month. The news comes one day before Dallas was set to open training camp.
Analysis: Zubov played in only 46 games last season because of a sports hernia and foot injury. Now, he is already out of action before the 2008-09 begins. Zubov is about to enter his 16th NHL season, and at 38-years-old, he is no young pup. We expected him to be an injury-risk selection on Draft Day, we just didn't believe he will miss the first few weeks of the season. Zubov is obviously a must-start Fantasy option when healthy, but he is out until at least mid-October.

Zubov feels ready for second round

News: Free from the burden of repeated playoff failures, the Dallas Stars had another reason to feel relieved Wednesday. Defenseman Sergei Zubov, out since January with various ailments, returned to practice and said he felt good afterward. That news improved his chances of playing against San Jose in the second-round series that starts Friday.
Analysis: At one point this season, the Stars thought they needed Zubov to have a chance in the playoffs. A foot injury sidelined him initially, and he aggravated a sports hernia from last year's playoffs when he tried to come back. In an effort to speed his recovery, Zubov recently went to Germany for his second sports hernia surgery in less than a year. "When I feel I can be effective, I'll be in there," he said Wednesday. "I'm almost there." There is some concern that this injury might linger into next season, but hopefully a few months of rest after the playoffs will cure Zubov. He will still be a high-end Fantasy defenseman come Draft Day 2008.

Zubov's playoff status in doubt

News: Dallas Stars defenseman Sergei Zubov had surgery this week in Berlin on a sports hernia injury, leaving his status unclear as the team prepares to face Anaheim in the playoffs. "We're hoping for a speedy recovery," Stars coach Dave Tippett said.
Analysis: Zubov has been out since Jan. 19 with a variety of ailments. The hernia dates to last year's playoffs, and an attempt to play through a foot injury this season created a groin strain. He had four goals and 30 assists in the first 40 games this season and was mentioned as a candidate for the Norris Trophy before he was sidelined by injuries. Obviously, continue to hold onto the stud defenseman in keeper formats.

Zubov might miss start of playoffs

News: Dallas Stars D Sergei Zubov has had a setback in his recovery from foot and groin injuries and will be re-evaluated Friday, coach Dave Tippett said. Zubov may not be ready to play when the playoffs begin next Wednesday or Thursday. "He's going to see a specialist and probably won't be on the ice for a few days," Tippett said. Zubov has missed the last 30 games with foot and groin injuries.
Analysis: Those of you in regular formats hoping to get Zubov back before the end of the season will be sorely disappointed at this news. Obviously continue to hold onto the stud defenseman in keeper formats.

Zubov skates in full gear

News: Stars defenseman Sergei Zubov skated Friday and Thursday after missing 26 games with a hairline fracture in his right foot. Zubov felt good enough that he was in full gear for the entire practice. Coach Dave Tippett said Zubov will not play Saturday and that it will take a few days before knowing where the status of Zubov is at in his rehab.
Analysis: Zubov has circled March 27 on his calendar and is aiming to return that day against the San Jose Sharks -- giving him six games to get ready for the playoffs. Unfortunately for Fantasy owners, by the time Zubov gets back, most Fantasy seasons will be over. Obviously continue to hold onto him in keeper formats, but his value in seasonal leagues is pretty much zero at this point.

S. Zubov could be back skating this week

News: The Dallas Morning News reports that Stars D Sergei Zubov could be back skating by the end of this week. Zubov had a screw placed in his injured right foot last month and could return to action by the end of March.
Analysis: Unfortunately for Fantasy owners, by the time Zubov gets back, most Fantasy seasons will be over. The stud defenseman has been out since Jan. 17, and his absence has clearly been felt on many rosters. Obviously continue to hold onto him in keeper formats, but his value in seasonal leagues is pretty much zero at this point.

Sergei Zubov

Zubov has surgery, out 3-4 weeks

News: Dallas Stars D Sergei Zubov is expected to miss the next 3-4 weeks after surgery to repair a foot fracture on Sunday. Surgeons inserted a screw to help Zubov's foot injury heal faster, according to a team statement. The 37-year-old Zubov has missed the past 17 games with the injury. He is third on the Stars with 31 assists and fourth in points with 35. Zubov became the 15th defenseman in NHL history to reach 600 assists earlier this season. He's the only active NHL defenseman with at least 30 assists in each of the past 12 seasons.
Analysis: Well, we knew we would get an update this week on Zubov's status, but this isn't exactly what his owners wanted to hear. With most Fantasy playoffs starting in 3-4 weeks, Zubov isn't going to be much use to your team in the regular season. If you're in with a shot at making the playoffs, maybe try and trade Zubov to someone who has already clinched and get a player in return who is actually going to play and help you make the postseason.
