Ex-NHLer Brashear Signs With Swedish Team

News: Donald Brashear signed a contract with MODO of the Swedish Hockey League on Tuesday.
Analysis: The move seemingly comes out of nowhere, as Donald Brashear hasn't played professional hockey since the 2009-10. It appears Brashear's relationship with former Flyers teammate Peter Forsberg, who serves as MODO's assistant GM, might have influenced the club's decision to bring him aboard. The long-time tough guy will be tasked with protecting MODO's stars, which most notably includes Maple Leafs prospect William Nylander, a top-10 pick in last June's NHL Entry Draft.

Brashear clears waivers on Friday

News: The Rangers assigned LW Donald Brashear to Hartford of the AHL on Friday after he cleared waivers.
Analysis: New York acquired enforcer Jody Shelley from the Sharks on Friday, meaning Brashear might not get a chance to play with New York again. It's a real shame since New York signed him this offseason, but he has been injured a lot and that led to Brashear's demise. Even if he latches on with another NHL team, Brashear is nothing more than a flier in leagues that reward heavily for PIM.

Brashear placed on waivers

News: The New York Post reports that the Rangers have placed LW Donald Brashear on waivers.
Analysis: Brashear has one assist and 73 PIM in just 36 games this season, as he's dealt with various injuries. No one is likely to take a flier on this enforcer, who remains just a low-end option in super-deep leagues that reward bad behavior.

Brashear rejoins Rangers lineup

News: Rangers enforcer Donald Brashear returned to the lineup on Monday against the Penguins after being scratched for five games because of a hamstring ailment. He had no points in 5:35 of ice time and finished at minus-1.
Analysis: Brashear hasn't been a model of health in 2009-10, but at least he hasn't been sidelined by an injury for several weeks. He mostly dresses as the Rangers' top enforcer and is a flier in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for PIM.

Brashear overcomes hand injury

News: Rangers LW Donald Brashear, out two games with a hand and wrist injury, was back in the lineup on Wednesday against the Blackhawks. He had no points in 5:21 of ice time and took three shots.
Analysis: Brashear has dressed only 20 times this season due to a rash of injuries. Even if he was healthy, we aren't sure how many more points he would have (only has one assist). Brashear pretty much dresses as the Rangers' top enforcer. He is best used in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for PIM when healthy.

Brashear bumped to third line

News: The Sports Xchange reports Rangers LW Donald Brashear, who missed eight of 12 games earlier in November with an injured right hand, was bumped up to the third line by head coach John Tortorella in Saturday's 3-2 loss to Florida. "I've got to try to gain some trust in him," Tortorella said of the veteran enforcer. "If he can just do the job along the walls, I want to get him involved more along the way and see what he can bring us here because some other guys aren't exactly going."
Analysis: Brashear didn't gain the promotion because of his elite offensive skills. He is still on the ice as an enforcer and is best used in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for PIM despite the promotion.

Brashear plays in 1,000th game

News: Rangers LW Donald Brashear returned to the lineup on Thursday against the Thrashers after missing four games with a bruised wrist. He had no points in 3:28 of ice time and finished at even. He also fought with Eric Boulton.
Analysis: Brashear, who played in his 1,000th NHL game, dropped the gloves less than five minutes into Thursday's game, so it seems his wrist is just fine. Brashear is best used in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for PIM when healthy.

Brashear close to returning

News: The Sports Xchange reports Rangers LW Donald Brashear, who has missed seven of the last nine games, including the last four with a bruised right wrist, is getting closer to returning, coach John Tortorella said. "It's a situation that Donald could play, but we don't want it to turn into a lingering thing," Tortorella said. "He could play if it were an absolute emergency, but we're trying to get him completely healthy. I've talked to Donald about it. I told him we want him to be physically ready to be able to do the things he has to do in order to play all aspects of the game."
Analysis: The Rangers do need Brashear at 100 percent to continue his enforcer-like presence. He can't afford to be hurting if he needs to throw his body around the ice. Consider Brashear an injury-risk start for Week 9 (Nov. 9-15). Brashear is best used in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for PIM when healthy.

Brashear welcomed in New York

News: The Sports Xchange reports LW Donald Brashear, who signed a free-agent contract in early July, should be welcomed into the Rangers' locker room despite his high hit against then-Rangers center Blair Betts in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals while Brashear still was Washington, coach John Tortorella told the New York Post. Brashear received a six-game suspension from the NHL for his blind-side hit on Betts. "I don't agree at all with what happened with Blair Betts. We all know that was wrong," Tortorella said. "But you also have to understand the situation that we're in now where we're looking to make changes on the hockey club and believe that Donald has a unique presence that will help us. I don't condone anyone trying to hurt another player. I don't know that's what happened with Bettsy, but if I ever think that Donald is trying to injure someone while he plays for the Rangers, that will be addressed."
Analysis: In 989 career games with Montreal, Vancouver, Philadelphia and Washington, Brashear has 85 goals, 204 points and 2,561 penalty minutes. He had one goal and four points in 63 games for the Capitals last season, while adding 121 penalty minutes. He has totaled 100-plus penalty minutes for 13 straight seasons and is still more of a flier in leagues that reward heavily for PIM.
