Former Wing Salei Killed In Russian Plane Crash

News: Ruslan Salei was one of 43 people killed when a jet carrying his Yaroslavl (KHL) team crashed moments after takeoff in Russia on Wednesday. It is considered one of the sports world's worst aviation disasters.
Analysis: The crash has shocked Russia and the entire hockey community. Several former NHLers played for Yaroslavl, one of the KHL's top teams last season. The team had been flying to nearby Belarus for the season opener. Ruslan Salei had only just signed with Yaroslavl after spending last season with the Detroit Red Wings. He leaves behind his wife and three children, the youngest of whom was born this past March.

Salei Signs Deal To Play In KHL

News: Salei has signed with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the KHL, The Windsor Star reports.
Analysis: Salei, who started his professional hockey career in Russia in 1992, heads back overseas following a 10-point effort with the Red Wings in 2010-11. He is a scrappy defenseman who plays an aggressive style of hockey.

Wings' Salei Unlikely To Return

News: Salei is an unrestricted free agent this summer and is unlikely to return to the Wings, MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Jakub Kindl showed enough improvement over the course of the season that he'll likely become a regular part of the team's third defensive pairing in 2011-12. Salei isn't considered a top-four blueliner at this stage of his career, and that's the area where the Wings are most likely to make a move in free agency this summer. In addition to Kindl's development, prospect Brendan Smith could be ready to play in Detroit next season as well.

Wings' Salei Returns Monday

News: Salei (personal) played 6:28 and was the Wings' 12th forward in Monday's shootout loss to Pittsburgh.
Analysis: He was away for a week due to the birth of his third child, so Salei's conditioning has fallen off a bit recently. With Jan Mursak getting called up from Grand Rapids on Tuesday, Salei's role Wednesday could include more time on the blue line.

Detroit's Salei Expected Back Monday

News: Salei (personal) is expected to return for Monday's game against Pittsburgh, DetroitRedWings.com reports.
Analysis: That rules him out for Saturday's game against Nashville, but it looks like his Monday return is very likely.

Wings' Salei Questionable For Saturday

News: Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock is unsure if Salei (birth of child) will be back in the lineup Saturday against Nashville, MLive.com reports.
Analysis: The veteran blueliner remains in California following the birth of his daughter earlier in the week. Jakub Kindl will remain in the lineup as long as Salei is away.

Wings' Salei Likely Away For Two Games

News: Salei (personal) will likely miss Wednesday's game against the Caps and Thursday's game against the Blue Jackets, MLive.com reports.
Analysis: He's back in California where his wife is expecting their third child this week. With Salei out, Jakub Kindl will likely see time in his place alongside of Jonathan Ericsson.

Salei Tallies In Wings' Win

News: Salei picked up a goal and finished plus-1 in Saturday's win over the Blues.
Analysis: He's only chipped in 10 points this season the goal was his second as a Red Wings. Playing as part of the third pairing, his role is more of a stay-at-home once working in tandem with Jonathan Ericsson and Jakub Kindl, so you'll want to look elsewhere for help on the blue line.

Wings' Salei Misses Practice Tuesday

News: Salei missed practice Tuesday as he remains in California with his expectant wife, MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Head coach Mike Babcock expects Salei to play Wednesday, but be sure to keep an eye out for any news regarding a last-minute change of plans as it seems like a reasonable possibility with Salei on the other side of the country.

Salei Will Return To Wings' Lineup Friday

News: As expected, Salei (personal) will return to the lineup Friday against the Panthers, MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Salei took a couple of days off to spend time with his children and pregnant wife. He hasn't skated since Sunday, but says he won't be rusty. He'll replace Jakub Kindl in the lineup.

Wings Without Salei Thursday

News: Salei won't be in the lineup Thursday against Tampa Bay, MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Salei, who was permitted by the Wings to spend some time this week in California with his family, will re-join the team Friday in Florida.

Salei Pots Goal in Wings Debut

News: Salei potted the team's only goal in his preseason debut with Detroit on Wednesday night.
Analysis: He'll get third-pairing minutes, working with either Jonathan Ericsson or Jakub Kindl depending on how things unfold this season. Given the talented number of blueliners ahead of him on the depth chart, Salei won't see a ton of power-play minutes with his new club.

Salei has productive game in return

News: Avalanche D Ruslan Salei returned to the lineup on Sunday against the Ducks after missing five games with a torso injury. He scored a goal, tallied an assist and finished at plus-1 in 20:08 of ice time. He also took two shots and spent two minutes in the penalty box. The goal was Salei's first of the season.
Analysis: Salei has played just seven games this season due to injury, but we expect him to be part of the Avalanche's defensive rotation down the stretch. Unfortunately, Colorado has a crowded blue line, so Salei might gave to sit out some games. He is merely a low-end Fantasy flier when healthy.

Salei out indefinitely

News: The Denver Post reports that Avalanche D Ruslan Salei (torso) is out indefinitely.
Analysis: Salei is a minimally-viable Fantasy option when healthy, so just continue to ignore him in all formats.

Ruslan Salei

Salei leaves with torso injury

News: Colorado D Ruslan Salei left Saturday's win over the Blues in the second period with what was described as a torso injury and did not return.
Analysis: Salei has managed just five games this season after being sidelined following back surgery. This issue might keep him out for a bit, but luckily he has just minimal Fantasy value when healthy.

Salei cleared to play

News: The Denver Post reports that Avalanche D Ruslan Salei (back surgery) has been cleared to play, but hasn't found his way back into the lineup yet. "My plan would be to work him back into a game. I'm just not exactly sure when," coach Joe Sacco said.
Analysis: Salei has played just once this season, but his 30-point potential means he has retained some Fantasy value in the deepest of leagues. Obviously, don't insert him into your lineup until he's back on the ice.

Salei has surgery on his back

News: The Denver Post reports that Avalanche D Ruslan Salei had surgery on his back and is out several more weeks.
Analysis: Salei has now been out almost two months, and he's unlikely to see the ice again until some time in January. Leave Salei alone in Fantasy until further notice.

Ruslan Salei

Salei suffers slight setback

News: The Denver Post reports that Avalanche D Ruslan Salei (back) has suffered a setback in his recovery and will have to take a few days off.
Analysis: Salei was likely to return this week, but now it might be more like early December until he gets back in the lineup. Salei has some offensive skills, but is more of a defensive specialist. Leave Salei alone in Fantasy until further notice.

Salei making steady progress

News: Avalanche D Ruslan Salei (back) said he's making steady progress toward a return. Asked how much longer he'd be sidelined, Salei said, "More than a week, less than a month."
Analysis: Salei has played just one game this season and might find it tough getting regular minutes on the Avs blue line when healthy. He has some offensive skills, but is more of a defensive specialist. Leave Salei alone in Fantasy until further notice.

News: The Avalanche have placed D Ruslan Salei on IR with a back injury.

Salei out with back issue

News: Avalanche D Ruslan Salei sat out his third game Saturday with a back injury.
Analysis: Salei was originally thought to have the flu, and played Thursday, but it looks like it was a back issue all along. Luckily, Salei has minimal Fantasy value, but he should probably be benched for Fantasy Week 2 (Oct. 12-18) just in case he remains out.

Salei back from bout with flu

News: Avalanche D Ruslan Salei returned to the lineup Thursday against the Predators after missing two games with the flu. He had no points in 19:08 of ice time and finished at minus-1.
Analysis: Salei, 34, played in 70 games last season, led all Avalanche defensemen in hits with 107 and was second among Colorado defensemen in scoring with 21 points. He is a decent two-way player, but has low-end Fantasy appeal when active.

Salei battling the flu

News: The Sports Xchange reports D Ruslan Salei (flu) has been scratched for each of the Avalanche's first two games and is day to day.
Analysis: We found it a bit odd that Salei wasn't dressed for the first two games. He should replace Kyle Cumiskey once healthy. Salei, 34, played in 70 games last season, led all Avalanche defensemen in hits with 107 and was second among Colorado defensemen in scoring with 21 points. He is a decent two-way player, but has low-end Fantasy appeal when active.

Salei a surprise healthy scratch

News: The Sports Xchange reports D Ruslan Salei was a surprise healthy scratch Thursday in the Avalanche's season opener against San Jose.
Analysis: Salei, 34, played in 70 games last season, led all Avalanche defensemen in hits with 107 and was second among Colorado defensemen in scoring with 21 points. Unfortunately, the Avalanche added Kyle Quincey and Tom Preissing this offseason, making it a crowded blue line. Until Salei becomes a regular contributor again, he has marginal Fantasy appeal.
