Oilers' Smyth Announces His Retirement

News: Ryan Smyth announced his retirement Friday, according to the Edmonton Journal.
Analysis: Ryan Smyth will play in his final game Saturday. He will end his 19-year career with 386 goals and 456 assists in 1,270 games. Smyth was not a top-six forward for Edmonton this season but still managed 10 goals and 23 points in 78 games.

Smyth Tallies Lone Edmonton Goal

News: Ryan Smyth scored Edmonton's only goal in Friday's 2-1 shootout loss to Detroit, his second goal in a four-game span.
Analysis: Ryan Smyth is not one of Edmonton's elite offensive players but he's going to chip in occasionally for the struggling Oilers.

Oilers' Smyth Nets Goal In Win

News: Ryan Smyth had a goal and three shots on net in Thursday's 2-1 win over the Rangers.
Analysis: That's three points in two games for the 37-year-old forward. The goal also marks the 16th career 20-point (eight goals) season for the 18-year veteran.

Oliers' Smyth Pots Two Friday

News: Ryan Smyth scored both of the Oilers' goals in a 2-0 win over Calgary on Friday.
Analysis: The goals were just Ryan Smyth's fourth and fifth of the season and his first since November 19. The 37-year-old is providing veteran leadership to the young Oilers, but does not contribute much fantasy wise these days.

Oilers' Smyth Will Play Sunday

News: Ryan Smyth (neck) will slot into the lineup Sunday in place of Ales Hemsky (ribs).
Analysis: Ryan Smyth will make his return from a neck injury, after missing the team's last three games. In 24 contests prior to going down, Smyth notched 11 points (4G, 7A) and 16 penalty minutes.

Oilers' Smyth Present At Morning SkateThursday

News: Ryan Smyth (neck) participated during the Oilers' morning skate, but his status for Thursday's game is still unknown, the Ryan Dittrick of the Oilers' team site reports.
Analysis: Ryan Smyth will likely be a game-time decision for Thursday's matchup with the Bruins.

Oilers' Smyth To Sit Out Thursday

News: Ryan Smyth (neck) will not play Thursday against the Bruins.
Analysis: Ryan Smyth was present during morning skate, but apparently still needs a little bit more practice time before making his return to game action. He'll sit for the second straight contest while he tends to his sore neck.

Oilers' Smyth Misses Practice Wednesday

News: Ryan Smyth (neck) did not practice Wednesday.
Analysis: Ryan Smyth missed Tuesday's game with neck soreness, but coach Dallas Eakins said the injury is not serious. The team is likely hoping the additional day of rest Wednesday will be sufficient to get him back on the ice Thursday.

Smyth (Neck) Will Not Play Tuesday

News: Ryan Smyth is dealing with a neck injury and will not play Tuesday against the Hurricanes.
Analysis: The nature of the injury is unknown, but Ryan Smyth won't be on the ice Tuesday. His absence will likely mean more time for David Perron and Taylor Hall. Further updates on the injury will be forthcoming, but consider Smyth day-to-day in the meantime.

Oilers' Smyth Snaps Slump With Three Helpers

News: Ryan Smyth ended a six-game scoreless slump Thursday against Colorado, picking up a trio of assists.
Analysis: The one-time star is a shadow of his former self these days, so outings like this should be considered exceptions to the rule, not signs of a breakout.

Oilers' Smyth Rips Off Three Points

News: Smith scored a goal and dished out a pair of assists in Tuesday's blowout win over the Jackets.
Analysis: After going six games without a point since returning from a groin injury, Ryan Smyth picked up an assist Saturday and now blew up for this big game, so he's finally looking like he's back to full speed. Still, with eight points and a minus-7 in 16 games, he's an option only in very deep formats. Don't expect too many more games like this from the 37-year-old.

Oilers' Smyth To Return Tuesday

News: Ryan Smyth (groin) will return to action Tuesday against the Panthers, the Edmonton Sun reports.
Analysis: With the Oilers in the midst of a five-game losing streak, his return couldn't have come at a better time. Ryan Smyth injured the groin during the club's six-game road trip last month and had four points in his first eight games. He'll skate on a line with Sam Gagner and Nail Yakupov on Tuesday.

Oilers' Smyth Out For A Week

News: Ryan Smyth is expected to miss about a week of time with a groin injury.
Analysis: Ryan Smyth missed practice Monday with what was an undisclosed injury. It appears to be some sort of groin tweak, and he could miss 4-5 games.

Oilers' Smyth Misses Practice Monday

News: Ryan Smyth missed practice Monday, TSN.ca reports.
Analysis: The Oilers did not provide a reason for Ryan Smyth's absence, but presumably it was a maintenance day as there is no indication that his availability for Tuesday's game against Montreal is in doubt.

Oilers' Smyth Snags Two Goals

News: Ryan Smyth fired six shots and scored two goals in Saturday's OT loss to Toronto.
Analysis: He's doing part-time duty these days and that makes him a difficult fantasy roll unless you're dealing in a day-to-day format.

Oilers' Smyth To Sit Monday

News: Ryan Smyth will be a healthy scratch for Monday's game against New Jersey, TSN reports.
Analysis: Although Ryan Smyth played in each of the Oilers' first two games, he's not a full-time player at this stage of his career so healthy scratches need to be expected. After skating 17:33 in the team's first game and registering an assist, Smyth was down to just 11:25 of ice for Saturday's loss to Vancouver. One good thing is he saw over 3:20 of power-play time in each contest.

Smyth Faces Cloudy Future In Edmonton

News: Ryan Smyth faces an uncertain future in Edmonton, according to the Edmonton Journal.
Analysis: Ryan Smyth is signed for next year at $2.25 million, but may have to face the fact that he will no longer be a full-time player. Will he be happy playing only 40-50 games, or would he rather retire? Smyth still believes he can play, but only two goals this season, indicating his age is starting to catch up with him.

Oilers' Smyth May Be Odd Man Out

News: The addition of Jerred Smithson could leave Ryan Smyth as the odd man out, according to the Edmonton Journal.
Analysis: Ryan Smyth had been playing fourth-line center for the Oilers due to injuries up the middle and had been a key member on the penalty kill. Both of those jobs will more than likely go to Smithson, though, leaving Smyth's role with the team unknown at this time.

Oilers' Smyth Draws Back In

News: Ryan Smyth will be back in the lineup Saturday after riding the pine for a game, according to the Oilers web site.
Analysis: Ryan Smyth is no longer an offensive presence. He was benched after a series of penalties and poor play. New coach Ralph Krueger doesn't care about loyalties - he wants to win now - and if Smyth doesn't pick up his play he could once again find himself on the outside looking in.

News: Ryan Smyth is likely to play Saturday after being a healthy scratch Tuesday, the Edmonton Journal reports.
Analysis: Ryan Smyth has accumulated 18 penalty minutes in the past two games.

Oilers Expected To Scratch Smyth Tuesday

News: Ryan Smyth and Ryan Whitney are expected to be healthy scratches Tuesday against the Stars, 630 CHED's Dan Tencer reports.
Analysis: It's unclear if this will extend beyond Tuesday's tilt, but Ryan Smyth is off to a slow start, with just two points in 12 games to date.

Oilers' Smyth Scoreless Start To Season

News: Ryan Smyth has yet to notch a point so far this season in a diminished role for the Oilers.
Analysis: Ryan Smyth will not be the player he used to be in Edmonton, but may have some value in deeper leagues. His minutes have dropped below 15 per game, but he is still a smart offensive minded forward capable of scoring, so keep on eye out to see if he can get on a modest streak.

Smyth Re-Signs With Edmonton For Two Years

News: Ryan Smyth has re-signed with the Oilers for two years and $2.25 million per season, according to Darren Dreger of TSN.
Analysis: He'll have a diminished role in Edmonton -- he probably won't be on the PP and will likely be in a checking capacity. But he will bring veteran leadership to a very, very young team.

Oilers' Smyth In Big Slump

News: Ryan Smyth only has seven goals and 19 points in his his last 47 games, according to the Edmonton Journal.
Analysis: Ryan Smyth was never expected to have a big season, but hopes may have been high after he started off hot, scoring 12 goals and 24 points in his first 22 games. Smyth still has a two-year contract extension on the table from Edmonton that he has yet to sign.

Oilers' Smyth Seems Unlikely To Be Traded

News: Ryan Smyth seems unlikely to be traded at the deadline, according to the Oilers web site.
Analysis: Ryan Smyth would be coveted by several playoff teams, but doesn't seem inclined to leave Edmonton, issuing this statement Tuesday: "I came back for a reason. As a family, we're happy here and I love being an Oiler. Family is the most important thing." Doesn't seem like Smyth is willing to leave Edmonton.
