Flyers' Gill Nominated For Masterton Trophy

News: Hal Gill was nominated for the Masterton Trophy by the Philadelphia chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association, reports CSN Philadelphia.
Analysis: The award is for the player who most exemplifies sportsmanship, perseverance and dedication to hockey. While that may be true of Hal Gill, he has only appeared four times this season and doesn't figure to see any ice time as the season winds down.

Flyers' Gill Not Playing Much

News: Hal Gill has only played in four games this season, and has yet to crack the score sheet.
Analysis: The veteran blueliner hasn't played since December, and it appears he's going to be pretty much a non-factor this season. With 760 NHL games under his belt, it looks like Hal Gill's career might be winding down.

Gill Signs With Flyers

News: Hal Gill agreed to a one-year contract with the Flyers on Tuesday, TSN's Bob McKenzie reports.
Analysis: Hal Gill played in 32 games last season for the Predators totaling 12 penalty minutes, but he did not record a point. At 6-7, the 38-year-old provides a physical, veteran presence on defense for the Flyers off the bench.

Flyers Extend Camp Invite To FA Defender Gill

News: Hal Gill has been extended an invitation to the Flyers' training camp, reports Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe.
Analysis: He can play in his own zone, something the Flyers desperately need given the uncertainty around Andrej Meszaros. It will remain to be seen if the 38-year-old has any gas left in the tank.

Preds' Gill Placed On Waivers, Will Be Bought Out

News: Hal Gill was placed on waivers and will be bought out, ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: As expected, Hal Gill should be bought out by the Predators, who don't view him as a necessary part of their future. The 15-year veteran will be free to sign with any team looking for defensive depth.

Preds' Gill Clears Waivers

News: Hal Gill cleared waivers Wednesday, the Tennessean reports.
Analysis: The Predators expressed Tuesday that Hal Gill was not viewed as a key part of the team's future going forward, so he'll likely be bought out after passing through waivers unclaimed. The 38-year-old may be nearing the end of the line after producing zero points in 32 games last season.

Preds' Gill (Lower Body) Due Back Saturday

News: Hal Gill (lower body) is expected back in the lineup Saturday against Columbus, the Tennessean reports.
Analysis: Hal Gill, who is less of a scorer and more of a defensive specialist, leads the Preds with an average of 3:01 shorthanded minutes per game this season. As such, he possesses very little by way of fantasy value in most standard formats.

Preds' Gill Nearing Return From Lower Body Injury

News: Hal Gill (lower body) has been skating on his own and could return to the lineup Thursday against Calgary, the Tennessean reports.
Analysis: Preds coach Barry Trotz said he will make a decision Thursday morning on whether to start Hal Gill against the Flames. Either way, it's probably best to let Gill get a game or two under his belt before re-activating him.

Preds' Gill Close To Return From Lower Body Injury

News: Hal Gill (lower body) will not meet the team at the conclusion of its current road trip (Tuesday at Columbus), but could return later in the week, the Tennessean reports.
Analysis: Although this is good news, keep in mind that Hal Gill was frequently a healthy scratch prior to his injury, so it's not clear how coach Barry Trotz will utilize him once he gets clearance to return. It's probably best to wait until he gets at least a couple of consecutive games under his belt before re-activating him.

Preds' Gill (Lower Body) "A Ways Away" From Playing

News: Coach Barry Trotz said Hal Gill (lower body) hasn't made much progress and recovery and remains "a ways a way" from playing, the Nashville Tennessean reports.
Analysis: Hal Gill first suffered the injury last weekend against Detroit, but there's no telling when he may return to game action. Consider him out indefinitely until more positive news becomes available regarding his recovery.

Preds' Gill (Lower Body) Not Close To A Return

News: Hal Gill (lower body) is unlikely to rejoin the lineup for the remainder of the Preds' current road trip, the Tennessean reports.
Analysis: That means he's likely to miss Saturday's game against the Sharks as well as Monday's tilt with the Kings. The Preds then return home to face the Oilers on Friday, so there's a chance he could be back in the lineup then. Leave him on your fantasy bench for now.

Predators' Gill (Lower Body) To Skate Tuesday

News: Hal Gill (lower body) will skate Tuesday, Joshua Cooper of The Tennessean reports.
Analysis: Hal Gill left Saturday's game with the lower-body injury and did not return. His status going forward will be determined after Tuesday's skate.

Preds' Gill: Lower-Body Injury

News: Hal Gill left Saturday's game with a lower-body injury and did not return, according to CBC's Hockey Night in Canada.
Analysis: He's been a a healthy scratch recently so he probably won't be missed in the fantasy arena.

Preds' Gill Returns From Benching

News: Hal Gill was back in the lineup Friday against Vancouver after sitting out the previous two games as a healthy scratch. He skated just 13:41 with one shot on goal, three hits and two blocked shots.
Analysis: Hal Gill has not been much of a fantasy contributor the past several seasons, having failed to reach double-digits in scoring since 2009. He should not be on anyone's fantasy roster except in ultra-deep formats.

Predators’ Gill Out Thursday

News: Hal Gill will not play Thursday, but will likely see ice time on Saturday, The Tennessean reports.
Analysis: Predators coach Barry Trotz elected to go with the same lineup as Tuesday, when they beat San Jose in overtime, which means Jonathon Blum will take Hal Gill's place on the blueline. Blum is considered more of an offensive defenseman whereas Gill is more of a penalty-killing specialist.

Preds' Gill Misses Practice Friday

News: Hal Gill missed practice Friday to "take a bit of a breather," reports The Tennessean.
Analysis: Looks like it was more of a maintenance day for Hal Gill and fellow shot blockers Scott Hannan and Kevin Klein. At this point, there's no reason to suspect any injury that would keep Gill out of Saturday's game against the Sharks, so start him as you normally would.

Gill Signs Deal With Preds

News: Hal Gill (leg) has signed a two-year, $4 million contract with the Predators, TSN.ca reports.
Analysis: The 6-7 Hal Gill brings experience and size to Nashville's blue line, but not much from a fantasy perspective. Last season, split between the Canadiens and Predators, he produced just one goal and 12 assists over 76 games, while collecting 37 penalty minutes.

Preds' Gill Has Fractured Tibia

News: Hal Gill had a plate screwed onto his fractured tibia two weeks ago, the Montreal Gazette's Dave Stubbs reports.
Analysis: Hal Gill was on crutches earlier in the week. Gill is set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, and he is expected to be back to full health at some point during the summer.

Preds' Gill Says He Will Play In Game 1

News: Hal Gill (lower body) said he's in the lineup for Friday's Game 1 against Phoenix, The Tennessean reports.
Analysis: Hal Gill sat out the first round series against the Red Wings, but the Predators didn't seem to miss his size too much en route to a 4-1 series win. His defensive presence in this series could make Pekka Rinne appear even more savvy in goal than he was against the Red Wings.

Predators' Gill Practices

News: Hal Gill (lower body) practiced with his regular line Thursday morning and continues to show progress in his recovery, The Tennesseean reports.
Analysis: The veteran defenseman missed the entire Red Wings series with a lower body injury, but his condition is improving. The Predators hardly needed his efforts in the conference quarterfinals, ousting Detroit in five games. Finishing off the Wings in quick fashion provided Hal Gill with more time to recover, and coach Barry Trotz expects him to play in the semifinals against Phoenix.

Preds' Gill Progresses

News: Hal Gill (lower-body injury) continues to progress, the Tennessean reports.
Analysis: At this point, a return to the lineup for the second round of the playoffs is plausible for the big guy, whose size and stay-at-home tendencies help the Nashville blue line. That said, his utility in playoff pools is limited, given his modest upside on offense.

Preds' Gill Out For Game 5

News: Hal Gill (lower body) will not play in Friday's Game 5 against the Red Wings, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Hal Gill was able to turn in a full practice Thursday, but Predators coach Barry Trotz apparently feels Gill isn't ready. The 37-year-old hasn't played in the series against Detroit, but he may be available for the next round, if the Preds can finish off the Red Wings.

Predators' Gill Practices Thursday

News: Hal Gill (lower body) participated in a full practice Thursday for the first time since his injury, the Tennessean reports.
Analysis: Hal Gill was injured in an Apr. 5 game against Dallas. Predators coach Barry Trotz said the final call on Gill's availability for Game 5 against Detroit would be made Friday. "I just have to be able to play at a high level," the 37-year-old Gill said. "It's not like you're jumping into an exhibition game. You can't (go at 50 percent) out there. You have to go all out."

Preds' Gill Out For Tuesday's Game 4

News: Hal Gill (lower body) will not play in Tuesday's Game 4 against Detroit, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Predators coach Barry Trotz says that Hal Gill is improving, but he won't be available Tuesday. Gill skated some Tuesday, and there's a chance the 37-year-old will be well enough to play in Friday's Game 5.

Preds' Gill Hits The Ice

News: Hal Gill (lower body) skated for part of the Preds' practice Monday, Joshua Cooper of The Tennessean reports.
Analysis: "He'll be just day-to-day and we'll see where he is tomorrow," Coach Barry Trotz said Monday. "He said he felt a lot better. I said don't push it too hard. He was fine, he actually stayed out there for quite a while (Monday)." It seems unlikely that we'll see Hal Gill Tuesday against the Red Wings, but perhaps a return for Friday's Game 5 is plausible.
