Wings' Cleary Bound For Press Box Thursday

News: Daniel Cleary is expected to serve as a healthy scratch in Thursday's opener against the Bruins, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: The Red Wings brought Daniel Cleary back on a good-faith deal in the offseason, but he provides most of his value in the locker room rather than on the ice. If he's not a regular healthy scratch for the Red Wings most nights, he'll be little more than a fourth-liner.

Detroit's Cleary Feels Healthy Heading Into Fall

News: Daniel Cleary says his knee problems are behind him and he's ready for a bounceback campaign after his worst season with the Red Wings, MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Daniel Cleary signed for less to stay with Detroit but didn't end up doing much, with only eight points in 52 games. Cleary was a fairly strong producer for the Red Wings for several years, but at 35, is more of a veteran depth winger.

Cleary Re-Signs With Detroit

News: Daniel Cleary has signed a one-year deal with the Red Wings.
Analysis: Coming off a season in which he recorded just eight points in 52 games, Daniel Cleary isn't much of a fantasy factor these days, but the 35-year-old will continue to provide the Wings with depth and experience at left wing this coming season.

Wings' Cleary Still Not Skating

News: Daniel Cleary (knee) is still not skating and has no timetable for return, Ansar Khan of MLive reports.
Analysis: Daniel Cleary wasn't playing much before he got injured, but with all the Red Wings out, if he was healthy he would likely own a spot in the lineup. When he starts practicing, he should need a couple more days before getting into game shape.

Red Wings' Cleary Slowed By Knee Injury

News: Daniel Cleary will miss at least one week due to a knee injury, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: Daniel Cleary was believed to be a healthy scratch for the Red Wings' first two games out of the break, but it's possible he may have been concealing the injury during that time. His knee injury wasn't reported until he failed to skate during Monday's practice. With Henrik Zetterberg and Stephen Weiss on injured reserve, and now Cleary and Pavel Datsyuk unavailable Tuesday, the Red Wings will find themselves shorthanded at forward once again.

Wings' Cleary A Healthy Scratch

News: Daniel Cleary will be a healthy scratch for Sunday's game, the team's official Twitter feed reports.
Analysis: Daniel Cleary has largely been a disappointment this season, with only eight points in 50 games. With Johan Franzen returning to the lineup, the Red Wings needed to make a decision and Cleary was the least valuable in the lineup, apparently.

Wings' Cleary Will Play Sunday After All

News: Daniel Cleary will play Sunday against the Panthers, Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News reports.
Analysis: The expectation was that Daniel Cleary would watch from the press box Sunday, but after Henrik Zetterberg was scratched with an upper-body injury, Cleary received word that he will play after all. The 35-year-old has just one goal and one assist in his last 15 games.

Wings' Cleary Starting Tuesday

News: Daniel Cleary started Tuesday's game in place of Justin Abdelkader, the Sun Sentinel reports.
Analysis: Abdelkader is still in the lineup, but the wings have opted to go with Daniel Cleary to begin the game, as he scored the team's lone goal in Saturday's loss to the Panthers. On the season, Cleary has recorded just five points in 30 games.

Detroit To Insert Cleary Into Lineup

News: Daniel Cleary will be back in the lineup Friday, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Analysis: The Red Wings are struggling mightily on offense as of late, and coach Mike Babcock is trying anything and everything to jump-start his team and Daniel Cleary. Hopefully Tuesday's healthy scratch will motivate the slumping Cleary, who has only three points in 18 games.

Detroit's Cleary Scratched For Tuesday

News: Daniel Cleary will be a healthy scratch Tuesday night, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Daniel Cleary has struggled to find the box score this season, with only three points in 18 games. Coach Babcock likes Cleary's play, but needed to shake lines up with the Red Wings in a little bit of a slump.

Cleary Officially Agrees With Red Wings

News: Daniel Cleary agreed to a one-year, $1.75 million contract with the Red Wings on Thursday, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: After agreeing to go to Philadelphia on a professional tryout - with a three-year, $8.25 million deal on the table - Daniel Cleary had a change of heart and decided to meet once again with Wings general manager Ken Holland and coach Mike Babcock. He clearly wanted to return to Detroit, though he'll have to take less money than he would have had he simply accepted either of Detroit's contract offers this summer: two years for $4.5 million or three years for just under $6 million. Signing Cleary does put the Wings over the salary cap, but they still have time to sort that out before the September 30 deadline.

Cleary Expected To Rejoin Red Wings

News: After his deal with the Flyers fell through, Daniel Cleary told reporters Thursday morning that he will sign with the Red Wings on Thursday night, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: It seemed pretty clear through much of this process that Daniel Cleary preferred to stay in Detroit if possible, but when the money wasn't matching up, he explored his options elsewhere. If he does indeed sign with the Wings, we'll have to wait and see what concessions he made to get his contract to fit under the salary cap, but it looks like this reunion is going to happen just one day after he was reportedly headed to Philadelphia.

Flyers' Deal With Clearly No Longer On

News: A complication has arisen and Clearly will no longer be signing with the Flyers, CBC Sports' Elliotte Friedman reports.
Analysis: Details aren't available at the moment, but we do know that Daniel Cleary was previously reported to be signing a three-year deal with the Flyers. Assuming the deal is off, the 34-year-old winger will re-enter the free agent pool.

Cleary Signs With Flyers

News: Daniel Cleary signed a three-year deal with the Flyers on Monday, The Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: After failing to come to terms with his former team, the Red Wings, Daniel Cleary will devote his veteran presence to the Flyers. The winger contributed a mere 15 points during the 48 regular season games last year, but did collect an impressive 10 points in just 14 playoff games. He will likely occupy a spot on the Flyers' third line where he could see modest scoring opportunities.

Clearly Still May Rejoin Red Wings

News: Daniel Cleary, still an unrestricted free agent, will join the Red Wings in their informal skates leading up to training camp and will possibly receive a professional-tryout invitation to camp, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Daniel Cleary received interest from the Penguins, Ducks and Flyers this offseason (and received an offer from Detroit before free agency began), but he remains unsigned. He was the second-leading scorer for the Wings in the playoffs, and the team would probably welcome him back at the right price, but Detroit already has 16 forwards under contract for next season. If the two sides are going to get back together, Clearly will likely need to accept a contract worth less than he was hoping for.

Wings Unlikely To Sign Cleary

News: The Red Wings have given newcomer Daniel Alfredsson number 11, Daniel Cleary's former number, so it's unlikely Cleary will be returning to Detroit.
Analysis: The shrinking salary cap is likely to blame -- it's squeezing out the older, more expensive skaters in favor of the younger, cheaper signees. "... we have some younger players replacing some older players. And in some cases, some salary demands (of veteran players) are above the marketplace," said Wings' general manager Ken Holland in a recent interview (although not specifically in reference to Daniel Cleary). Cleary still has some gas in the tank, but camps are opening in less than two weeks. He'll likely need to take a haircut on a contract to get a gig.

Wings Expected To Re-Sign Cleary

News: Updating a previous report, Daniel Cleary (shoulder) remains an unrestricted free agent, but is expected to work out a deal to remain in Detroit, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: It appears that Daniel Cleary will sign for somewhere in the neighborhood of three years at $2.5 million per year, but the Wings need to open up a roster spot before a deal can be finalized, since they have too many forwards now after signing Daniel Alfredsson and Stephen Weiss on Friday.

Cleary Off To Vancouver

News: Daniel Cleary has inked a two-year contract with Vancouver, according to TSN's Jason Botchford.
Analysis: Daniel Cleary was not retained by Detroit and there were rumors of him signing with former Wings' assistant GM Jim Nill in Dallas, but Cleary opted to head to Vancouver. He's a gritty, character player that can chip in offensively when needed, but might not hit the 26 goal plateau he cracked two seasons earlier.

Wings' Cleary Played With Separated Shoulder

News: Daniel Cleary, who will become an unrestricted free agent July 5, was playing with a second degree shoulder separation and fractured finger on his left hand as the result of a hit in Game 5 of the opening round series against Anaheim, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: The injuries are not expected to impact Daniel Cleary in training camp, regardless of where he might be playing next season. The Wings will have 13 forwards under contract after retaining their restricted free agents, so it's no guarantee that the veteran forward will return Detroit after tallying 10 points in the playoffs this spring.

Red Wings' Cleary Playing Friday

News: Daniel Cleary (shoulder) will play in Friday's Game 6 against the Ducks, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Daniel Cleary suffered a shoulder injury during Wednesday's Game 5 but was able to return. The injury should not be an issue going forward.

Wings' Cleary Playing Through Pain

News: Daniel Cleary returned to Game 5 on Wednesday night despite suffering an injury to his left side courtesy of a hit from the Ducks' Daniel Winnik, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: The hit drew a five-minute boarding call against Winnik, but the Wings failed to score on the power play before taking a minor penalty and ultimately surrendering the game-tying goal minutes later. Daniel Cleary said he expects to play in Game 6 when the series returns to Detroit on Friday night.

Wings' Cleary Notches Two Points

News: Daniel Cleary skated 20:57 Tuesday against Nashville and picked up a shorthanded goal and an assist, tripling his season point total.
Analysis: Despite his middling offensive talents, Daniel Cleary's been a mainstay on the Wings' power play, averaging more than three minutes a game -- confusing, as he has zero man-advantage points on the year.

Wings' Cleary Pots First Goal Thursday

News: Daniel Cleary picked up his first goal of the season in Thursday's win over the Blues.
Analysis: Unlikely many of the other Wings contributors from Thursday, Daniel Cleary is still seeing steady minutes and should be capable of rebounding back toward his career norms as the season progresses.

Wings' Cleary To Open On Third Line

News: Daniel Cleary will open the season on the Wings' third line, MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Darren Helm and Todd Bertuzzi will join Daniel Cleary on the checking line initially, which should be one of the more gritty units in the league. Cleary battled knee issues throughout the 2011-12 campaign, so the extra time to recover during the NHL lockout as well as the shortened schedule this season may actually work in his favor.
