Ex-Ranger Biron Announces Retirement

News: Martin Biron officially announced his retirement from the NHL on Sunday, reports Andrew Gross of The Record.
Analysis: Martin Biron had struggled early on and posted a troublesome 7.61 GAA with a .763 save percentage over just two games. He was waived by the Rangers on Monday and cleared Tuesday, making it possible to send him down to AHL Hartford. Rather than continuing down that path, Biron is hanging up his pads and skates for good. A 15-year veteran of the NHL, Biron finishes his career with a record of 230-191-25 with a 2.61 GAA and .910 save percentage.

Biron Waived By Rangers

News: Martin Biron was waived by the Rangers on Monday, TSN's Ryan Rishaug reports.
Analysis: Martin Biron has had a rough start to the season, with a .763 save percentage and a 7.61 GAA in two games. If he clears waivers, he'll head to the AHL for the first time since 2009-10.

Rangers' Biron Gives Up Four Goals

News: Martin Biron stopped 13 of 17 shots faced before being pulled in favor of Henrik Lundqvist after two periods of Saturday's 5-3 loss to St. Louis.
Analysis: While Martin Biron (0-1-0) wasn't exactly sharp in his first start of the season, the team's play did seemingly improve, which is good news for all concerned. With the Rangers slated to play just two games this week, Biron won't likely be needed unless starter Henrik Lundqvist gets pulled from the pipes, even then his fantasy value is very limited.

Rangers Turn To Biron On Saturday

News: Martin Biron will be in the net Saturday against the Blues, Newsday reports.
Analysis: Henrik Lundqvist has been lit up for 10 goals over his last two starts, and although Martin Biron isn't a threat to take over as the No. 1 goaltender, coach Alain Vigneault decided King Henrik could benefit from a rest. Biron didn't fare particularly well in relief of Lundqvist on Tuesday, surrendering five goals in a 9-2 loss to the Sharks.

Rangers' Biron Gives Up Five In Relief

News: Martin Biron was tagged for five goals on 21 shots after coming on in relief of Henrik Lundqvist in Tuesday's blowout loss at the hands of the Sharks.
Analysis: The Rangers were absolutely abused in this game, the second of a back-to-back set, and it's hard to assign that much blame to the goalies, who were repeatedly hung out to dry by a New York squad that didn't look like it was well conditioned. Still, after Lundqvist got himself pulled in this one, expect Martin Biron to get a start the next time the Rangers play back-to-backs.

Rangers' Biron Lit Up In Preseason Action

News: Martin Biron let in five goals on just 22 shots in Tuesday's preseason loss to Edmonton.
Analysis: Not the sharpest outing from Marty, and it has to crack the door open just a bit further for Johan Hedberg to step in and strut his stuff in the battle to be Henrik Lundqvist's veteran backup. Martin Biron's held the job capably for three years and is well-loved in the locker room, though, so despite this ugly outing, he'll likely get every chance to hold onto the gig.

Biron Perfect In Rangers' Win

News: Martin Biron stopped all six shots he faced in Tuesday's 3-2 preseason win over Philadelphia.
Analysis: Martin Biron, who obviously received a great performance from the blue-liners in front of him, was replaced midway through the second period by Cam Talbot. Although it's still early in camp, even with Johan Hedberg breathing down his neck, it appears Biron is the likely candidate to win the back up job.

Rangers' Biron At Camp, Focused

News: Martin Biron says he has dealt with a personal issue, is "100 percent focused" and plans on remaining for rest of camp, reports Newsday's Steve Zipay
Analysis: With the Rangers inviting former Devils goaltender Johan Hedberg to camp, the backup goalie situation on Broadway figures to be more dicey than expected. We wouldn't put too much thought into it either way, but for those handcuffing with Henrik Lundqvist, keep a close eye on this one.

Rangers' Biron To Return On Friday

News: Martin Biron will return to the team on Friday after missing the first two days of camp with a personal issue, the Bergen Record reports.
Analysis: Martin Biron had retreated to his home in Buffalo to deal with a personal matter, but spoke with head coach Alan Vigneault on Wednesday night, who said Biron will drive back downstate on Thursday. This should prime the Rangers' backup goalie for a Friday debut at camp.

Rangers' Biron Out With Personal Issue

News: Martin Biron was absent from the first day of Rangers training camp, the Bergen Record reports.
Analysis: Martin Biron's absence is due to a personal issue and there is currently no timetable for his return. He should be back soon, as these things usually don't take too long, but it's worth keeping an eye on.

Rangers' Biron Gets No Support Against Canadiens

News: Martin Biron got off to a slow start Saturday, allowing a goal in the first minute of play, but ultimately made 23 saves in a 3-0 loss to Montreal. His team has been shut out in his past four starts in Montreal dating back to 2011.
Analysis: The Rangers were stymied by Carey Price, but that seems to be easy -- the Rangers are the lowest-scoring team in the NHL. Martin Biron doesn't get many starts and is best deployed as a handcuff to Henrik Lundqvist ... except in Montreal. Avoid him at all cost there next time.

Rangers' Biron Gets The Nod In Montreal

News: Martin Biron will start in goal against the Canadiens on Saturday, the Bergen Record's Andrew Gross reports.
Analysis: Martin Biron was the first goalie off the ice during Friday's practice, so this just confirms what was already expected.

Rangers' Biron May Get Start Against Canadiens

News: Martin Biron was the first goalie to leave the practice ice Friday morning, indicates Newsday's Steve Zipay reports.
Analysis: The last start for the 35-year-old net minder was a 4-1 win over the Capitals, 18 days ago. His previous start on February 23rd was a 3-0 road loss to his purported opponent, the Canadiens. He holds a 14-13-1 (2.44 GAA) career record against Montreal.

Rangers' Biron Notches Win Sunday

News: Martin Biron turned away 28-of-29 shots in Sunday's 4-1 win over the Capitals.
Analysis: Filling in for Henrik Lundqvist, Martin Biron turned in a solid effort Sunday in his first start since February 23. Biron is now 2-1-1 in his four spot starts thus far.

Rangers Tab Biron To Face Caps Sunday

News: Martin Biron will start Sunday's contest against Washington, the Bergen Record's Andrew Gross reports.
Analysis: Martin Biron was a late announcement as a starter for Sunday's game against the Caps, but it's a rare day off for Henrik Lundqvist. Use Biron accordingly if you're in need of a spot start in daily leagues.

Rangers' Biron Loses In Shootout

News: Martin Biron, making just his second start of the season, allowed three goals on 31 shots in a shootout loss to the Islanders on Thursday.
Analysis: After jumping out to a 2-0 lead after the first period, Martin Biron and the Rangers managed to fall behind by allowing three goals in a span of less than seven minutes in the second period. Fortunately, the Rangers bailed him out and at least picked up a point despite a typically awful shootout performance by Biron, who gave up goals on both Isles shots. Though the shootout is certainly a weakness, he's still one of the more reliable (if little-used) backups in the league.

Rangers Turn To Biron Thursday

News: Martin Biron has been confirmed as Thursday's starter against the Islanders, the Rangers' official site reports.
Analysis: Martin Biron will make his second start of the season in goal Thursday, with Henrik Lundqvist receiving a well-earned night off on the heels of Tuesday's 4-3 overtime win over the Bruins.

Rangers' Biron To Get Start Against Isles

News: Martin Biron was the first off the ice in practice this morning, tweets Steve Zipay of Newsday
Analysis: This would indicate Martin Biron's first and only other start since February 2nd's 3-2 win over Tampa Bay. The veteran is 1-0-0 with a 1.98 GAA thus far this season. Lifetime vs the Isles, Biron is 21-4-1 with a 2.03 GAA and .930 save percentage.

Rangers' Biron Wins In First Start Of Season

News: Martin Biron made 30 saves in Saturday's 3-2 win over the Lightning. It was his first start of the season.
Analysis: His fantasy value is tied almost exclusively as a handcuff to Henrik Lundqvist in daily leagues. He won't see double-digit starts this season.

Rangers' Biron To Start Saturday

News: Martin Biron will start in goal against the Lightning on Saturday, the Bergen Record's Andrew Gross reports.
Analysis: Henrik Lundqvist got the nod in each of the Rangers' first seven games, but Martin Biron will finally get a start. Biron figures to see less playing time than most backup goalies so long as the impeccable Lundqvist remains healthy. Unfortunately for Biron, his first start of the year will come against a talented Tampa Bay team that leads the NHL with 5.3 goals per game.

Rangers' Biron Re-Signs For Two Years

News: Martin Biron re-signed with the Rangers to a two-year deal worth $2.6 million Saturday, WGR Sports Radio 550 reports.
Analysis: Martin Biron will continue to serve as the backup to Henrik Lundqvist. He started 20 games last season, posting an impressive 12-6-2 record and a 2.46 GAA.

Rangers' Biron Gives Up Four In Loss

News: Martin Biron allowed four goals on 27 shots in Thursday's loss to Pittsburgh.
Analysis: This was not the strongest game for Martin Biron, who likely got the start due to Henrik Lundqvist's hurting arm. Don't expect to see much of Marty in the playoffs.

Rangers Roll With Biron

News: Martin Biron will start Thursday's game against the Penguins, the Rangers' official site reports.
Analysis: Martin Biron, who will be making his first start since March 15, will give Henrik Lundqvist -- whose arm is a little stiff after absorbing a shot Tuesday -- a well-earned breather Thursday.

Rangers' Biron Lit Up By Pens

News: Martin Biron allowed five goals on 32 shots in Thursday's loss to the Penguins.
Analysis: Pittsburgh had both a physical and emotional boost in this one with the return of Sidney Crosby to the Pens' already talented lineup, and the Rangers played some sloppy hockey in front of Martin Biron, but even so, a couple of those goals were a bit soft. With rare exceptions, Biron has not looked too good over the past couple months in his limited duty as Henrik Lundqvist's backup.
