News:Mathieu Garon made 19 saves in Sunday's 3-1 loss to Buffalo.
Analysis: He's not starter material and he's struggling behind the porous Bolts' D. Avoid him at this point.
News:Mathieu Garon will start in net Sunday against the Sabres, Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune reports.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon is just 5-8 with a 2.89 GAA and an .899 save percentage in 17 games this season.
News:Mathieu Garon is expected to start Sunday at Buffalo, the Tampa Bay Times' Damian Cristodero reports.
Analysis: Ben Bishop has been struggling between the pipes for the Lightning ever since they acquired him from Ottawa at the trade deadline, so it looks like Mathieu Garon will get a chance to start working his way back into the starting mix.
News:Mathieu Garon made 15 saves in relief Saturday, but took the loss in a 6-5 overtime defeat at the hands of the Capitals.
Analysis: The Bolts were down 3-0 when they made the goalie switch and then roared back to knot the game at fives. Unfortunately, a power-play time in overtime netted the Caps a goal. Ben Bishop is the starter, but both goalies will get some time behind the Bolts' porous D. And that will do neither any good at all.
News:Mathieu Garon is expected to start in goal against the Sabres on Sunday, the Tampa Bay Times' Damian Cristodero reports.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon will be the odd man out once Anders Lindback (ankle) returns, but Lindback will not be ready for Sunday's game. It could very well be Garon's final start of the season.
News:Mathieu Garon, set to become an unrestricted free agent after the season, will not be re-signed now that the Lightning have acquired Ben Bishop, the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Analysis: Fellow goalie Anders Lindback is out with a high ankle sprain, so Mathieu Garon should stay up with the Lightning for a while longer, despite his lack of a future with the team. Garon will likely be the odd man out once Lindback returns, though Lindback has no timetable at the moment.
News:Mathieu Garon is slated to start Tuesday's game against the Panthers, Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune reports.
Analysis: The start will be the third straight for Mathieu Garon, who has notched wins in his last two turns to lift his record 5-8, with a 2.90 GAA and .901 save percentage.
News:Mathieu Garon could get the start Tuesday against Florida, according to FS Florida. It would be his first start against the Panthers this season.
Analysis: He has two straight wins -- one against Buffalo and the other over New Jersey. Florida isn't exactly pounding out the wins, so he's as good an activation as any.
News:Mathieu Garon made 21 saves Friday in a 5-4 shootout win over New Jersey.
Analysis: It's just his fifth win of the season. He's not much of a fantasy option, but will continue to get starts while Anders Lindback is out ... unless the Bolts make a move to pickup a goalie before the deadline.
News:Mathieu Garon will get the start Friday against the Devils.
Analysis: While Mathieu Garon's opponent, Martin Brodeur, has been hot lately, the Devils don't score much, and Garon has faced an average of only 15.6 shots over his last five games. Garon plays much better at home to boot, so he could be a sneaky start Friday night.
News:Mathieu Garon made 13 saves in a 2-1 win over Buffalo on Tuesday night.
Analysis: He has struggled lately, but the team played strong D in front of him. And, of course, the Sabres aren't exactly fear-inducing.
News:Mathieu Garon will start Tuesday's game against the Sabres, the Lightning's official site reports.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon, who has gone 3-1-0 with a 1.50 GAA and .944 save percentage over his past four games against Sabres, returns to the Lightning net Tuesday after giving way to Cedrick Desjardins in Sunday's loss to the Jets.
News:Mathieu Garon was yanked in the first period of Saturday's game after allowing three goals on the first 11 shots. He was relieved by Cedrick Desjardins.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon has been spotty at best this season and this is yet another poor outing. Desjardins was strong in relief and may see playing time over Garon as a result.
News:Mathieu Garon will start against Ottawa on Saturday, SenatorsExtra.com reports.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon has performed admirably this year, stopping 91 percent of the shots he's seen, but this might not be the best game to start him. Tampa is 5-9-0 on the road, while Ottawa is 10-2-3 at home.
News: It remains unknown if Mathieu Garon will play in both of Tampa Bay's back-to-back games this weekend against Ottawa (Saturday) and Winnipeg (Sunday), Damian Cristodero of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon, who is 3-8 with a 2.79 GAA and .910 save percentage this season, will likely see ample playing time going forward due to Anders Lindback's ankle injury. Cedrick Desjardins is slated to back up Garon for the time being.
News:Mathieu Garon was pulled in the second period of Wednesday's game only to return to the net partway through the third after Anders Lindback suffered an injury.
Analysis: He finished with 15 saves and three goals against. He's a sketchy play, but he's likely in line for more starts if Lindback's injury is serious.
News:Mathieu Garon is slated to start Wednesday's game against the Maple Leafs, Damian Cristodero of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon, who is 3-7-0 to date, takes aim Wednesday at a Toronto squad that has lost five straight games.
News:Mathieu Garon is on track to start Wednesday's game against the Maple Leafs, Erik Erlendnsson of the Tampa Tribune reports.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon gave up just one goal his last time out, but he will be tested Wednesday by a Toronto squad that has scored at least four goals in four of its seven games this month.
News:Mathieu Garon made 21 saves in a 4-1 win over Carolina on Saturday night.
Analysis: It's his first win since Feb. 23 and just his third on the season. Anders Lindback is still the go-to guy in the Bolts mesh tent; Mathieu Garon remains his handcuff.
News:Mathieu Garon will start in goal Saturday against the Hurricanes, Damian Cristodero of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Analysis: The Lighting will turn to Mathieu Garon to make the start for the first time since March 2. Both of Garon's wins on the season have come against Carolina.
News:Mathieu Garon (lower body) is expected to be available as a backup Tuesday against the Panthers, Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune reports.
Analysis: Either way, Anders Lindback is slated to start Tuesday's game, with an official announcement regarding Mathieu Garon's activation yet to occur.
News:Mathieu Garon (lower body) says he is good to go, Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune reports.
Analysis: Based on that, look for Mathieu Garon to be activated in advance of Tuesday's game against the Panthers, with Cedrick Desjardins in line to reassigned.
News:Mathieu Garon (lower-body injury) has been placed on injured reserve by the Lightning, according to Yahoo! Sports.
Analysis: This may not really change Mathieu Garon's timetable and he's still expected to be evaluated this weekend. However, you can safely rule him out for Saturday's contest at Boston, as the earliest he can return is Monday at Pittsburgh.
News:Mathieu Garon (lower body injury) will skate Friday, after which his status will be evaluated, Damian Cristodero of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Analysis: The report adds that Mathieu Garon had an MRI exam Wednesday, with the result being termed by Cristodero as all clear. As a result, Garon remains in the day-to-day category.
News:Mathieu Garon, who left Monday's game in the second period after suffering a lower-body injury, is listed as day-to-day, TBO.com reports. "It's not major; I'm day-to-day and I feel better today and hopefully I'm OK," Garon said Tuesday. "I'll need to test it on the ice, and in a couple of days, hopefully I'll be good."
Analysis: Though Mathieu Garon's injury shouldn't keep him out of the mix too long, the Lightning were still forced to recall Cedric Desjardins from AHL Syracuse to serve as Anders Lindback's backup while Garon is out.
News:Mathieu Garon let in one goal on 13 shots before having to leave Monday's game against the Penguins after 22:19 due to a lower-body injury.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon was replaced by Anders Lindback, who has struggled this season. Garon is day-to-day for now.
Lightning's Garon (Lower Body) Will Not Return Monday
News:Mathieu Garon (lower body) will not return to Monday's game against Pittsburgh, Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune reports.
Analysis: The exact nature and extent of the injury that forced Mathieu Garon out of Monday's game early in the second period are unknown at this time. Anders Lindback, who was set to start the second of back-to-back games Tuesday, came in to replace Garon, so it seems Tampa may need to add a netminder from the AHL.
News:Mathieu Garon left Monday's game against the Penguins early in the second period with an apparent injury, Damian Cristodero of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon stopped 12 of 13 shots in 22-plus minutes before exiting. It's unclear what's ailing him, but he was looked at by a trainer and tried to test himself a bit before ultimately being replaced in goal by Anders Lindback. Consider him day-to-day until more information becomes available.
News:Mathieu Garon will start Monday's game against the Penguins, the Tampa Tribune's Erik Erlendsson reports.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon, who has dropped four straight decisions, will be facing a Pittsburgh squad that is not only coming off a 7-6 win over Montreal on Saturday, but also welcoming Evgeni Malkin back to the lineup Monday.
News:Mathieu Garon will be between the pipes for Saturday's game against the Bruins, Damon Cristodero of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon will start his third straight game in place of the struggling Anders Lindback. Garon has been only average of late, and will face off against a streaking Bruins squad that has won five straight, so fantasy owners will probably want to go a different direction Saturday.
News:Mathieu Garon allowed four goals on 42 shots in Thursday's loss to the Rangers.
Analysis: The Lightning were outplayed all game long, but especially in a first period that saw the Rangers outshoot them 20-2. Mathieu Garon didn't give up any softies, but the Bolts' defense left him holding the bag multiple times.
News:Mathieu Garon will start Thursday's game against the Rangers, the Tampa Tribune's Erik Erlendsson reports.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon, who dropped a 2-1 decision to the Sabres on Tuesday, will get a crack at a Rangers' squad Thursday that has lost four straight games.
News:Mathieu Garon gave up just two goals on 21 shots, but it was enough to take the loss Tuesday against the Sabres.
Analysis: It was just his sixth start of the year. While usual starter Anders Lindback is likely to be out there for the Bolts' next game, Mathieu Garon has outplayed him so far this year and could start cutting into his playing time. On the flip side, Garon has quite thoroughly proven that he's not a starting-quality goalie over the course of his decade-plus in the league.
News:Mathieu Garon will start Tuesday's game against the Sabres, the Tampa Tribune's Erik Erlendsson reports.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon, who relieved starter Anders Lindback in Sunday's loss to Pittsburgh, will be making his sixth start of the season on Tuesday against a Buffalo squad that has dropped four straight games.
News:Mathieu Garon came on in relief of starter Anders Lindback in Sunday's loss to Pittsburgh and gave up one goal on 11 shots.
Analysis: We can't help but think he'll see a bit more action going forward as Anders Lindback works through what could be a bit of fatigue. But he'll need to improve his game to be fantasy worthy.
News:Mathieu Garon made 32 saves Saturday in a 5-2 win over the Hurricanes. It's his second victory of the season; both wins have come against the Hurricanes.
Analysis: He has the Canes' number -- he has allowed three goals in two games against them and 12 in his other three starts this season. He needs to replicate this type of effort against other squads sooner rather than later to give Anders Lindback a bit more rest.
News:Mathieu Garon is expected to start against the Hurricanes on Saturday, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News and Observer reports.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon has just a single win in four starts so far this season (1-3-0) and does not make for a particularly good fantasy play on any given night, even with a potent Lightning offense playing in front of him. He will likely continue to serve as backup to Anders Lindback, who should be back in net Sunday against Pittsburgh.
News:Mathieu Garon, starting for an ill Anders Lindback, allowed four goals on 39 shots Thursday in a loss to Washington.
Analysis: It's been a tough go for Mathieu Garon in his last three outings, as he's given up 10 goals on 88 shots. Expect Lindback to be feeling better and ready to go Saturday at Florida.
News: With Anders Lindback under the weather, Mathieu Garon will start Thursday's game against the Capitals, the Tampa Tribune's Erik Erlendsson reports.
Analysis: The start will be the fourth of the season for Mathieu Garon, who in his last outing surrendered three goals on 19 shots before being yanked after playing 29:58 against the Rangers this past Sunday.
News:Mathieu Garon let in three goals on 19 shots before getting pulled after playing 29:58 against the Rangers on Sunday. He also took the loss.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon has only played in three games so far, and since his first start was so good his overall numbers are still pretty strong, but obviously the sample size is small, and Anders Lindback remains the starter in Tampa.
News:Mathieu Garon will start Sunday against the Rangers, the Tampa Tribune's Erik Erlendsson reports.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon was slated to start Saturday's game against Boston before it was snowed out, so it makes sense he would get the nod here over Anders Lindback. That said, Garon is still firmly entrenched as the team's #2 option between the pipes for the time being.
News: Saturday's game in Boston has been postponed due to the blizzard that is currently affecting much of the east coast. Mathieu Garon had been expected to start for Tampa Bay.
Analysis: The Lightning play in New York on Sunday night, and while the city was hit by the blizzard, things should clear up in time to get that one in. The extra day of rest could cost Mathieu Garon a start, although it's also possible that the Lightning will elect to give Anders Lindback an unexpected day off.
Lightning's Garon To Start Saturday If Game Is Played
News:Mathieu Garon will start in goal Saturday if the game is not canceled, the Tampa Tribune's Erik Erlendsson reports.
Analysis: There has been some speculation that the game will be called off because of the blizzard on the east coast. Mathieu Garon will start for the third time this season if the game is played.
News:Mathieu Garon made 27 saves in a 3-2 loss to the Rangers on Saturday night.
Analysis: It was originally thought Anders Lindback would get the start, but Mathieu Garon got the nod and performed well. This is only his second game this season so don't expect a lot of ice time until the season gets a little older. The Bolts will use him to spell off Anders Lindback who could start to tire as he makes the transition from backup to starter.
News:Mathieu Garon will be in goal Saturday against the Rangers.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon has seen just one start this season, earning the a 4-1 win and saving 35 shots against the Hurricanes on Jan. 22. He'll go head-to-head against the Rangers' backup goaltender, Martin Biron, on Saturday.
News:Mathieu Garon delivered a 35-save, 4-1 win over Carolina on Tuesday night. He made several point-blank saves to ensure the win.
Analysis: He was very sharp, stoning snipers like Jeff Skinner from in tight. Mathieu Garon may be called upon to support Anders Lindback's transition to starter's minutes, so expect a few more starts than you'd normally see from a backup.
News:Mathieu Garon will get the start between the pipes Tuesday, the Lightning Team Website reports.
Analysis: Coach Guy Boucher wanted to give Mathieu Garon his first chance of the season by the third game. Anders Lindback drew the start in the first two games, allowing seven goals and posting a 1-1 record.
Bolts' Garon: Opening Night Starter To Be Announced Saturday
News: The Lightning will make a decision about a starter for the season opener on Saturday, reports the Tamoa Tribune. "I have my opinion, but I have to talk with the rest of my staff and goalie coach and I have to sit down with them," Boucher said. Mathieu Garon is ticketed for the back-up spot, but could see a higher than average number of starts.
Analysis: Anders Lindback was acquired in the offseason to be the team's starter, but he's coming from a back-up role himself. "We got him [Lindback] because we feel that, eventually, he's going to be a terrific goaltender," Boucher said. We think this means the Bolts will ease Lindback into his role and Mathieu Garon will benefit.
News: The Lightning may not decide until Friday night whether Mathieu Garon or Anders Lindback will get the start Saturday night, reports the Tampa Bay Times. "Come Friday we'll make our decision not necessarily on what we see during the week, but more what our bigger plan is," said coach Guy Boucher.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon was told he'd get a shot at the starter's gig and Lindback hasn't toiled as starter in the NHL (yet). We still think Lindback will get 30 of the Bolts' 48 games, but we might know more later in the week.
Tampa's Garon, Lindback To Battle For Starting Job
News:Mathieu Garon will receive a fair chance to win the starting job over new acquisition Anders Lindback, the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Analysis: Coach Guy Boucher stated as much by saying he views Lindback and Mathieu Garon as "nos. 1 and 1A" for the team. Though Lindback is expected to settle in as the team's goaltender long term, the competition will take some pressure off Lindback while giving Garon the opportunity to assert himself as the team's top netminder. Garon is coming off of a season-ending groin injury and at age 34, is 10 years older than Lindback, so he'll likely face an uphill battle in his claim for the starting job.
News:Mathieu Garon will be out 3-4 weeks with a torn groin muscle, the Lightning's official site reports.
Analysis: With Mathieu Garon out, Dustin Tokarski is on his way up to the big club after being summoned from AHL Norfolk.
News:Mathieu Garon, who suffered a lower-body injury Tuesday, will be evaluated Wednesday, the Tampa Tribune reports. "He's getting an MRI (today)," Lightning coach Guy Boucher said Wednesday. "I have to speak with Steve (Yzerman) and the doctors, but probably (a goaltender move will be needed)... most probably."
Analysis: If Mathieu Garon is forced to miss time, the Lightning could call up either Dustin Tokarski or Jaroslav Janus from AHL Norfolk or pursue a veteran free agent as the Bruins did when they signed Marty Turco to replace the injured Tuukka Rask.
News:Mathieu Garon was injured in the first period Tuesday and will not return, the Tampa Tribune reports.
Analysis: It's unclear exactly what happened to Mathieu Garon, but he appeared to tweak something in the first period. Dwayne Roloson took over in net.
News: Coach Guy Boucher said Mathieu Garon will start in net Tuesday against Ottawa, the Tampa Tribune reports.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon enters Tuesday's game on a four-game win streak, winning six of his last seven starts. Start him in your fantasy lineup with confidence.
News:Mathieu Garon made 25 saves in Saturday's OT win over Carolina.
Analysis: The Canes jumped out to a 3-1 lead before he slammed the door shut. It's his fourth-straight win and sixth in his last seven starts. The Bolts are surging and he's on the reasons why. Take advantage.
News:Mathieu Garon will start Saturday at Carolina, according to the Lightning's official Twitter feed.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon has plenty of momentum coming into this matchup, with three straight wins under his belt as the Bolts try to climb back into the Eastern Conference playoff race. He makes for a decent play against a Carolina team that is 4-2-4 in its last 10 games.
News:Mathieu Garon made 16 saves in a 4-3 OT win over Rangers on Friday night.
Analysis: He wasn't busy but he was good when he had to be. And that seems to be his mantra of late. He has three straight wins and has finally become a reliable contributor between the pipes.
News:Mathieu Garon will start Friday for the Lightning against the Rangers, according to The Tampa Bay Times.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon has picked up a win in four of five starts providing the Bolts with the type of consistent goaltending that they haven't been receiving for a good deal of the season.
News:Mathieu Garon made 23 saves in a 2-1 win over Montreal on Tuesday night.
Analysis: We're still reluctant to fully endorse this guy but he has won four of his last five starts. We have to give the guy a little respect for his recent efforts and may almost be prepared to make him a more regular activation.
News:Mathieu Garon will face his old team, the Canadiens, Tuesday, according to Dave Randorf of TSN.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon is just 2-3 against the Habs in his career, but he does have an impressive record this season at home as he has gone 13-5-1.
News:Mathieu Garon made 19 saves in Sunday's 4-3 win over New Jersey. He also picked up an assist.
Analysis: He survived a late flurry by the Devils to record the win. He has a surprising three wins in his last four starts (although he was yanked after allowing four goals in just 23 minutes in the loss). It's his 20th win of the year and likely sets him up for a start Tuesday against Montreal.
News:Mathieu Garon will start Sunday's game against New Jersey, Tom Gulitti of The Bergen Record reports.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon predictably gets the nod Sunday in the wake of Sunday's 8-1 drubbing at the hands of Pittsburgh, a game started by Dwayne Roloson.
News:Mathieu Garon allowed four goals on 18 shots before being pulled Thursday in an eventual loss to Winnipeg.
Analysis: Dwayne Roloson was perfect in relief and the Lightning stormed back with three third-period goals, but it wasn't enough to get Mathieu Garon off the hook. Look for him to take a seat for Tampa's next game, Saturday against the Penguins.
News:Mathieu Garon will tend the twine for the Bolts on Thursday against the Jets, according to Damian Cristodero of The Tampa Bay Times.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon has taken over in net for the Lightning, even if his performance has been far from impressive this year. Garon continues to muddle on with a 4-2-2 record in February.
News:Mathieu Garon made 28 saves, including 11 in the third period, and was named one of the game's stars in a 3-2 victory over Anaheim on Tuesday night.
Analysis: He's been instrumental in the Bolts recent surge and he's 8-2-2 in his last 12 starts. The Bolts have been hit with loss of Vinny Lecavalier and the trade of Steve Downie, so we're not certain the team can keep up this strong play. Continue to roll him on a match-ups basis.
News:Mathieu Garon will start in net Tuesday against the Ducks, the Tampa Tribune reports.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon will try to build off his 23-save win Saturday against the Capitals. He will need another strong performance Tuesday against the red-hot Ducks.
News:Mathieu Garon made 23 saves Saturday in a 2-1 win over Washington.
Analysis: He snuffed out four opportunities each from the Caps' two Alexes and was only beaten by Brooks Laich. It was a good performance for Mathieu Garon who had lost three of his previous four starts.
News:Mathieu Garon will start against Washington on Saturday, TampaBayLightning.com reports.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon allowed three goals in his last start, a figure that basically matches his season GAA of 2.90. That's far from something special, but at least Washington is 9-15-3 on the road this year, while Tampa is 16-9-2 at home. Still, hopefully you have a more reliable option Saturday.
News:Mathieu Garon made 23 saves in Tuesday's 4-0 loss to Ottawa. He allowed three goals.
Analysis: He's a match-up play only and this night was a match we thought he could have won. Trouble is, your teammates have to come up a few goals to help out. He has only had four goals of support in his last three games, which naturally has resulted in a 1-2 record in that span. Use with caution.
News:Mathieu Garon is expected to start in goal Tuesday against Ottawa, the Lightning's official Twitter page reports.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon's 2.89 GAA and .902 save percentage are both outside of the top 35 among NHL goalies. While he's not a great option, he will start Tuesday against a struggling Ottawa team.
News:Mathieu Garon made 37 saves in a 4-2 loss to the Penguins on Sunday.
Analysis: The Bolts got off to a fast start and then the Pens ripped off four unanswered goals in just under 15 minutes of play. He was absolutely pelted. The Bolts are at home for three straight this week and we expect Mathieu Garon to get the bulk or all of the starts. Ottawa, which is 2-6-2 in its last 10, comes up first and that feels like a solid activation.
News:Mathieu Garon will start Sunday at Pittsburgh, according to Damian Cristodero of the Tampa Bay Times.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon was excellent his last time out, stopping 26 of 27 shots against Buffalo, but overall he has struggled to put together quality starts on a consistent basis this season. However, going forward he will continue to shoulder the bulk of the workload between the pipes for the Bolts.
News:Mathieu Garon's 26 saves led the Lightning to a 2-1 victory over the Sabres on Saturday night.
Analysis: He earned the game's second star for his efforts and has clearly added a little chipotle to his game of late. He's 6-0-2 in his last eight starts but heads into Pittsburgh on Sunday, a match-up -- should he get the start -- that seems ill-suited to fantasy success.
News:Mathieu Garon was the first goalie off the ice Saturday and is therefore expected to start against Buffalo, TampaBayLightning.com reports.
Analysis: Tampa Bay has a road record of just 8-16-4 this year, so Mathieu Garon and his 2.91 GAA don't look like a good start on paper Saturday.
News:Mathieu Garon made 27 saves in the Lightning's 4-3 OT loss to the Rangers on Thursday night.
Analysis: He was coming of a fantastic 5-1 run with the only loss coming in OT. He was solid again Thursday against one of the best teams in the NHL and should remain the team's goaltender of choice going forward. Use him based on match-ups -- he's never carried the mail as a starter, so this run could just be a run and not a permanent (or semi-permanent) state.
News:Mathieu Garon will start Thursday's game against the Rangers, according to the Lightning's Official site.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon, who has won five of his last six starts, is back between the pipes for Tampa Bay on Thursday after giving way to Dwayne Roloson on Tuesday.
News:Mathieu Garon racked up his fifth win in his last six starts in Saturday's 6-3 win over the Panthers. He made 17 saves.
Analysis: His ratios aren't great on the season but they have started to improve over this span. The Bolts play two difficult opponents -- the Kings and Rangers -- in their next two outings and it's hard to imagine the team going with anyone other than Mathieu Garon. Activate him if you don't have an high-end option -- those next two are formidable.
News:Mathieu Garon will start Saturday's game against the Panthers, according to Damian Cristodero of the Tampa Bay Times.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon is playing surprisingly well of late - in the past five games, he has a 4-0-1 record along with with a 2.18 GAA and .918 save percentage. Furthermore, he's been getting very good offensive support from his teammates who have scored a combined 20 goals in the past six games. Garon's fantasy output tends to come in streaks, so take advantage of the hot spell while it lasts.
News:Mathieu Garon made 22 saves in a 2-1 OT loss to Winnipeg on Thursday night.
Analysis: It was a tight game and the Bolts got caught on a two-on-one in the extra frame that led to the winning goal. It's just his first loss in the last five games.
News:Mathieu Garon was the first goalie off the ice signaling that he will start for the Lightning on Thursday against the Jets, according to the Lightning's Official Twitter Page.
Analysis: Rather surprisingly, Mathieu Garon has won each of his last four starts for the Bolts. Over those four games he's allowed nine goals as he continues to pull away from Dwayne Roloson for the starting gig with the club.
News:Mathieu Garon made 26 saves in Tuesday's 4-3 OT win over Washington.
Analysis: A win is a win, and Mathieu Garon seems to be doing that a fair bit of late. He has earned four consecutive victories and is clearly the top choice in the blue paint for the Bolts.
News:Mathieu Garon will start against Washington on Tuesday, Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune reports.
Analysis: Unless the Bolts are able to find a goaltender at the trade deadline, Mathieu Garon and Dwayne Roloson will continue to jockey for positioning as the team is likely to settle on the hot hand come playoff time.
News:Mathieu Garon made 22 saves Tuesday in a 4-2 win over Columbus.
Analysis: Don't look now but he has won three straight starts while allowing six goals across the three. And they weren't just against low lights like the Jackets -- he beat Boston and Dallas, too. We can't guarantee much with this guy but three straight is an excellent start to a possible streak.
News:Mathieu Garon stopped 27 of 28 shots in the 2-1 victory over Dallas on Friday night.
Analysis: The effort was Mathieu Garon's first game of the month where he gave up fewer than three goals. The only reason Garon has been kept in goal is because teammate Dwayne Roloson hasn't fared any better. Going forward one of these goalies will need to step up if the Lightning have true aspirations of being a playoff team.
News:Mathieu Garon was the first goalie off the ice Friday which points to him being the starter against the Stars, according to Damian Cristodero of the Tampa Bay Times.
Analysis: Neither Mathieu Garon or Dwayne Roloson are playing at an acceptable level for a team with true playoff aspirations. Garon has made five starts in the month of January and he has yet to allow fewer than three goals in a game leading to a 1-4 record.
Bolts' Garon Beats Bruins With 26-Save Performance
News:Mathieu Garon won his first game in five starts and first in 2012 when he made 26 saves in a 5-3 win over Boston on Tuesday night.
Analysis: He still allowed a shorthanded goal, so by no means is he out of the woods. But a win over Boston is still impressive. He should get the next start.
News:Mathieu Garon will start in goal Tuesday against Boston, the team's official Twitter page reports.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon is 11-13-2 with a 3.03 GAA so far this season. He is having a rough January (no wins, pulled twice), and should only be used when in dire need.
News:Mathieu Garon made 38 saves in a 6-3 loss to Pittsburgh on Sunday afternoon. He allowed five goals.
Analysis: It was a crazy game. He was busiest in the first and second, allowing just two goals on 32 shots. But then the game broke open for both sides in the first half of the third -- six goals were scored by the 9:27 mark -- and it was 5-3. And Mathieu Garon only faced 12 shots in the third. He has lost his last four starts; he was pulled in two of them. Avoid him like the plague.
News:Mathieu Garon will start in net for the Lightning on Sunday against the Penguins, according to the Lightning's Official site.
Analysis: The Lightning have lost six straight, with Mathieu Garon on a three-game slide of his own, so he's a dicey play with Tampa Bay now tied for last place in the Eastern Conference.
News:Mathieu Garon lasted just 15:10 and eight shots on goal -- he allowed three to get by -- in Thursday's loss to Carolina.
Analysis: He was stuck with his third straight loss and was pulled for the second time in three games, so things have been pretty ugly lately for Mathieu Garon. Dwayne Roloson played well in relief, but neither of them has been able to sustain a consistently high level of play.
News:Mathieu Garon will start Thursday against the Hurricanes, according to Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon has dropped his last two starts, but he'll get a crack Thursday at the Hurricanes, losers of two straight and stuck in last place in the Eastern Conference.
News:Mathieu Garon made 25 saves in Saturday's 3-1 loss to Montreal.
Analysis: It's his second straight loss after reeling off three consecutive wins. The Bolts need more. So do you.
News:Mathieu Garon will start Saturday against the Canadiens, according to Renaud P. Lavoie of RDS.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon will be looking to rebound following his poor showing Tuesday against the Leafs, in which he was yanked midway through the second period after giving up four goals on just 21 shots. The Bolts don't have much choice but to continue starting Garon, given their only other option right now is Dwayne Roloson, who has been dismal so far this year (3.76 GAA, .881 save percentage).
News:Mathieu Garon was yanked mid-way through the second period of Tuesday's game against the Leafs and ended up with the loss after he gave up four goals on 21 shots.
Analysis: Every time the Bolts stormed back -- and they did twice -- he allowed a Leafs' goal within seconds. He had won three straight but looked painfully fragile Tuesday. We really didn't like what we saw and won't recommend him next time out.
News:Mathieu Garon is expected to start Tuesday against Toronto, reports the Tampa Bay Times.
Analysis: He has won three straight so why mess with a good thing? The Leafs are off kilter of late so this is a good matchup for Mathieu Garon. Put him in your net.
News:Mathieu Garon made 24 saves in Saturday's 5-2 win over the Hurricanes.
Analysis: Both of the goals he allowed came with the Bolts down a man. Mathieu Garon has performed remarkably well of late and maybe, just maybe, is shaking the rap that he can't carry the mail.
News:Mathieu Garon will be the Lightning's starter in net Saturday, according to the Lightning's Official Twitter Page.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon has gone 6-2 at home this season, but his GAA for the month of December is poor at 3.15 in 11 appearances. He's been moderately successful this season, at least when compared to Dwayne Roloson.
News:Mathieu Garon made 31 saves Thursday night in a 4-3 win over Montreal.
Analysis: He staked the Habs to a 3-1 lead and then slammed the door shut. He's "the man" in Tampa right now and use him accordingly. But make sure you have Dwayne Roloson handcuffed to him on your bench. The pendulum could swing back at any moment.
News:Mathieu Garon will start Thursday against the Canadiens, according to Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune.
Analysis: Although he's coming off two straight quality starts, Mathieu Garon has never shown an ability to maintain a high level of play over longer stretches. With a mediocre 9-9-2 record, 2.75 GAA and .906 save percentage, his fantasy value remains limited to deeper formats.
News:Mathieu Garon made 31 saves in a 5-1 win over the Flyers on Tuesday night.
Analysis: He stood on his head in the first and stymied all Philly shooters except Scott Hartnell. He has played in 14 of the Bolts' last 16 games and is clearly the team's number one tender. But the Bolts aren't solid enough to recommend him just yet.
News:Mathieu Garon will start in net for the Lightning Tuesday against the Flyers, according to Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon continues to outperform Dwayne Roloson, but that's really not saying that much given how poorly Roloson has performed for the majority of this season.
News:Mathieu Garon was sharp Friday night in a 2-1 OT loss to Colorado. He made 27 saves.
Analysis: It was exactly the kind of bounceback he needed after being yanked last time out. Still, it's hard to recommend his activation until we see more consistency.
News:Mathieu Garon was the first keeper off the ice and that almost certainly means he will be between the pipes Friday night, according to the Lightnings' Official Twitter Page.
Analysis: The Lightning were humiliated against the Sharks this week with both goaltenders fairing poorly. Mathieu Garon will get first crack to try and save face after allowing three goals on eight shots.
News:Mathieu Garon really struggled Wednesday night in San Jose, allowing three goals in a span of just under three minutes, and was yanked in favor of Dwayne Roloson.
Analysis: Ouch. He made five saves but this hurt ... and just when it looked like he was gaining the upper hand as the starter. At this point, we cannot recommend any Tampa netminder. It would be unconscionable.
News:Mathieu Garon appears to have the upper hand as the Lightning's starter right now, reports the St. Petersburg Times. He is expected to start Wednesday in San Jose.
Analysis: He has played in six straight games (five starts and one relief appearance) and 10 of the team's last 12. He is 5-5-0 with a 2.67 goals-against average and .902 save percentage -- numbers that aren't spectacular but better than Dwayne Roloson's (he has lost his last five starts with a 5.25 GAA and .829 save percentage). Still, Mathieu Garon has never been able to carry the mail over long periods of time so don't drop Roloson yet. The situation may change ... and quickly.
News:Mathieu Garon allowed two goals on 28 shots to pick up the win over the Blue Jackets on Saturday night. Garon has now won back-to-back starts.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon has been pretty inconsistent over the course of the season, going 8-8-1 in 21 games played. Garon still has value, but the value will fluctuate based on the opponent.
News: As expected, Mathieu Garon will start Saturday against Columbus, reports Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersburg Times.
Analysis: Just confirmation of what we already heard out of Columbus. And our recommendation stays the same -- roll someone else if you have them. He's been decent but his December has been queasy.
News:Mathieu Garon is expected to start in goal Saturday against Columbus, Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon has gone 7-8-1 with a 2.79 GAA in 20 games for the Lightning this season. Still, his month of December has been one to forget thus far. Feel free to use him Saturday, but it may be wise to wait until he gets back on track before inserting him into your lineup.
News:Mathieu Garon allowed four goals on 27 shots, but that was good enough to get his team to overtime Thursday against the Flames, and Steven Stamkos' OT goal made Garon a winner.
Analysis: The de facto Lightning starter has struggled recently, posting a 3.51 GAA and .880 save percentage in six appearances (five starts) in December.
News: It appears that Mathieu Garon will start Thursday night for the Lightning as he was the first goalie off the ice at the morning skate, according to the Lightning's Official Twitter Page.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon deserves the ice-time when his season long performance is compared to that of Dwayne Roloson. Still, Garon is also struggling of late as he has just one victory in his last five appearances while his GAA has ballooned to 3.42 for the month of December.
News:Mathieu Garon stopped eight of 10 shots in relief Monday in Tampa's 5-4 loss to New Jersey.
Analysis: Unfortunately, it looks like he'll get saddled with the loss after entering the game with a 3-2 deficit. Mathieu Garon will likely start the next time out. Dwayne Roloson stunk up the joint Monday and can't be counted on right now.
News:Mathieu Garon will start Saturday's game at Philadelphia, the Lightning's official site reports.
Analysis: This will make seven starts for Mathieu Garon in the last 10 games, a solid indication he is the Bolts' No. 1 netminder over Dwayne Roloson at the moment. However, Garon is just 6-6-1 on the season with a mediocre 2.61 GAA and .912 save percentage, numbers that suggest you should try and find your fantasy goalie support elsewhere.
News:Mathieu Garon made 27 saves in Saturday's 5-2 loss to the Flyers. He allowed four goals.
Analysis: He made some sharp saves but was burned by strange deflections on at least one of the goals. He has earned the majority of Tampa's starts of late; we don't really see that changing, at least short term.
News:Mathieu Garon made 28 saves on 30 shots through regulation and overtime Thursday, including several impressive stops on great chances in OT, then shut the Rangers down in the shootout to gain the win.
Analysis: With the victory, Mathieu Garon snapped Tampa's five-game losing streak as well as his own personal three-game skid. He's been somewhat inconsistent, but a crash test dummy would be better in goal than Dwayne Roloson right now, so Garon seems likely to get another start to try to keep the good times rolling.
News:Mathieu Garon will make a second straight start in net for the Lightning Thursday, according to Tampa Bay Times.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon continues to offer steadier work in net when compared to Dwayne Roloson. Garon has struggled on the road this season though going 2-5-1 with a 3.27 GAA.
News:Mathieu Garon allowed five goals on 34 shots in Tuesday's loss to the Islanders, his third loss in as many starts.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon has allowed 10 goals in his last three starts after a strong run of play that saw him garnering more starts from Dwayne Roloson. Garon is doing as much as Roloson of late to inspire confidence in his coaches, as Roloson allowed four goals in each of his last two starts. If you're going to use Garon, you're going to have to be vigilant in following the Tampa Bay goaltending situation.
News:Mathieu Garon is expected to start Tuesday against the Islanders, according to the St. Petersburg Times.
Analysis: Dwayne Roloson started Monday and might have gone Tuesday, too, had he been lights-out ... he wasn't. Mathieu Garon has been solid of late so his owners should milk his play for every ounce they can get. Roll him unless you have a plethora of possibilities between your pipes.
News:Mathieu Garon made 32 saves in a 4-2 loss to the Rangers on Saturday night. He allowed three goals.
Analysis: It was yet another solid performance for the journeyman. Bolts' management hasn't officially called their goaltending situation a platoon but that's what it is. If you own one, you must own the other. Platoons work in daily transaction leagues but pretty much destroy you in weekly head-to-head formats.
News:Mathieu Garon will start in goal Saturday against the Rangers, according to Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersberg Times.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon continues to make a strong case to be the Bolts' starting netminder over the struggling Dwayne Roloson. In four of his last five appearances, Garon has allowed just a single goal, posting a .914 save percentage and 2.04 GAA over that span. Historically, he has had trouble holding onto the No. 1 spot for any extended length of time, but for now at least, Garon appears to have turned a corner. Take advantage of the situation while it lasts.
News:Mathieu Garon will be between the pipes for the Bolts on Monday, according to Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersberg Times.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon has clearly outperformed Dwayne Roloson to this point of the season and he has allowed exactly one goal in each of his last four appearances.
News:Mathieu Garon stopped 21 of 23 shots in Monday's 3-1 loss to Minnesota, snapping a two-game winning streak.
Analysis: The final Wild tally was an empty-netter, but Mathieu Garon has started the last four games for Tampa Bay and appears to be regaining his form after an early season slump. Garon has surrendered four goals his last three starts and could be in line for more wins with Tampa's strong team around him. He continues to outplay Dwayne Roloson.
News:Mathieu Garon made 24 saves Saturday in a 5-1 victory over the Panthers. He now has back-to-back wins and has only allowed two goals in those games.
Analysis: He's now 5-3 in 10 games started -- that's just two fewer than Dwayne Roloson. And his GAA and save percentage are significantly better than Rolie's. At this point, it looks like the Bolts are comfortable with a platoon but will ride the hot hand.
News:Mathieu Garon will be in goal Saturday for the second game of a weekend home-and-home series against the Panthers, according to the Lightning's official Twitter page.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon played well in Friday's series opener, stopping 23 of 24 shots to earn a 2-1 OT win, so it's no surprise that he would get the nod for Saturday's rematch. With fellow netminder Dwayne Roloson struggling so far this season (6-6-1, 3.46, .887), Garon has an excellent chance to earn the everyday starter's role for the Bolts. Monitor closely.
News:Mathieu Garon made 23 saves in Friday's 2-1 OT win over Florida.
Analysis: It's his first win since he rang off three straight in late October; it was his first start since November 12. Dwayne Roloson has been sketchy to say the least so Mathieu Garon could be in line for another start very, very soon.
News:Mathieu Garon will start Friday against Florida, Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune reports.
Analysis: The Bolts' struggles in the defensive end and in goal have left many to wonder if general manager Steve Yzerman will look to acquired another netminder via trade. For now, Mathieu Garon is in position to take away playing time from Dwayne Roloson until one of the current options heats up enough to take on the bulk of the starts.
News:Mathieu Garon relieved starter Dwayne Roloson in the third period of Tuesday's game. He allowed one goal on five shots.
Analysis: The Bolts didn't show up. Period. Roloson has been sketchy to say the least but Mathieu Garon cannot carry the mail for too long.
News:Mathieu Garon relieved starter Dwayne Roloson on Monday night and stopped 16 of 17 shots.
Analysis: The Jets had already staked a 4-1 lead before Mathieu Garon arrived with his defibrillator but he certainly gave his team a chance to come back. They couldn't. He'll continue to roll as a solid backup who gets above-average action.
News:Mathieu Garon made 21 saves in a 3-0 loss to the Blues on Saturday night.
Analysis: He got no help at all -- his teammates were absolutely smothered. Dwayne Roloson is definitely the go-to guy in Tampa but expect Mathieu Garon to roll in the second of every back-to-back situation. And a few others, too, to preserve Rolie for the postseason.
News:Mathieu Garon will be in goal for Saturday's game against the Blues, according to the Lightning's official Twitter page.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon lasted just 15 minutes in his last start, but he'll get the nod Saturday to stay fresh. Garon saw extended action in late October, but he appears to have taken a back seat again to Dwayne Roloson, who started four of the last five games entering Saturday.
News:Mathieu Garon was chased from the Tampa net in the first period after yielding three goals on just 12 Florida shots on Sunday night. He was replaced by Dwayne Roloson.
Analysis: The first goal came on the PP less than two minutes in. The next two goals came within 2:16 of each other, the second of which was a soft wrister from the top of the left circle.
News: Head coach Guy Boucher announced that Mathieu Garon will start Sunday's game against the Panthers, according to the Lightning's official Twitter page.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon will get the nod in place of Dwayne Roloson, who started three straight games and gave up four goals in each of the last two. Garon has outplayed Roloson early this season, so expect the two to continue splitting the starts, in some fashion, for the time being.
News:Mathieu Garon got lit up for five goals on 17 shots in Thursday's loss to Nashville.
Analysis: He'd taken over the No. 1 role temporarily in Tampa, with Dwayne Roloson struggling mightily, but Mathieu Garon took a major step back in this one. Even worse for Garon's fantasy prospects, Roloson stepped in and stopped 10 of 10 shots in relief.
Garon Gets Another Start For Lightning On Thursday
News:Mathieu Garon will make his fourth straight start Thursday against the Predators, according to the Lightning's official Twitter page.
Analysis: With regular starter Dwayne Roloson currently sporting a dreadful -- and league worst -- 5.11 GAA, and Mathieu Garon currently on a three-game winning streak, head coach Guy Boucher will continue riding the hot hand. Garon has an enticing matchup Thursday against a Predators squad that is just one of five teams averaging fewer than two goals per game.
News:Mathieu Garon made 36 saves Tuesday in a 4-3 win over Buffalo.
Analysis: He's carrying the mail for the Bolts right now after Dwayne Roloson got off to that horrible start. Mathieu Garon is capable of starting for short periods of time, but he's never proven to be effective as a full-time starter. Expect him to get a few more games to ride out this streak.
News:Mathieu Garon will start against the Sabres again Tuesday after shutting them out Saturday, the Lightning's official Twitter feed reports.
Analysis: Understandably, the Bolts are rolling with the same lineup after getting the excellent result with it over the weekend. A prolonged stretch of strong play from Mathieu Garon could lead to a controversy in goal for Tampa.
News:Mathieu Garon delivered a 21-save, 3-0 shutout over the Sabres on Saturday night.
Analysis: He was sharp, there's no other way to say it. But he wasn't tested often and he's not starter material over an extended period of time. He'll probably earn another start as a result but Dwayne Roloson is still the starter ... for now.
News:Mathieu Garon will start his second consecutive game Saturday against Buffalo, according to the Lightning's official Twitter page.
Analysis:Mathieu Garon earned another start by giving up just three goals in his last 158 minutes of ice time. Dwayne Roloson opened the season as the Lighting's starting goalie, but he is getting a short break after allowing 17 goals in three games.
News:Mathieu Garon faced only 17 shots in Thursday's win over the Islanders, turning away 16 of them.
Analysis: Dwayne Roloson's struggles have opened the door for Mathieu Garon, who's been the far better goalie to this point. He's an intriguing pickup as long as he keeps playing well, and the Lightning's talent certainly helps.
News:Mathieu Garon will take on the Islanders and Al Montoya on Thursday, according to Erik Elrendsson.
Analysis: With Dwayne Roloson playing horribly to start the year, Mathieu Garon has a chance to carve out a bigger role for himself this season. A veteran of 278 NHL contests, Garon has been sharp in three appearances this season with a .938 save percentage.
News:Mathieu Garon will be between the pipes Saturday against Florida, reports Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersburg Times.
Analysis: He was perfect in relief of Dwayne Roloson on Thursday (16 saves) so he deserves this opportunity. And Florida makes for a good match-up for him -- it's not like the Panthers have a roster of snipers. Use him in daily leagues for some sneaky fantasy gains.
News:Mathieu Garon made 36 saves in Saturday's 3-2 shootout loss to the Panthers.
Analysis: He was strong but Jose Theodore was stronger. Mathieu Garon could see a bit more action in the short term, what with Dwayne Roloson's early struggles. Those in daily leagues should take advantage.
News:Mathieu Garon made 38 saves Saturday in a 4-1 loss to Boston.
Analysis: There's a strong chance he'll get the second game of back-to-backs for the Bolts as the team wants to keep Dwayne Roloson fresh for the postseason. Use him as a handcuff, particularly in leagues with daily transactions.
News:Mathieu Garon will get the start Saturday at Boston, according to the St. Petersburg Times.
Analysis: This is not surprising as the Bolts play their second of back-to-back games to start the season. Mathieu Garon, who was signed in the offseason as the Bolts' No. 2 goaltender, will likely be seeing the bulk of his workload on nights like this in an effort to ease the burden on 42-year-old starter Dwayne Roloson. In fantasy terms, Garon makes for a good insurance policy for all you Roloson owners out there.
News:Mathieu Garon made 27 saves in a 5-1 loss to the Canadiens on Saturday night.
Analysis: He gave up a shortie and a power-play marker, and played about as well as the rest of his team on the night. And that wasn't really great.
News:Mathieu Garon made 24 saves Saturday in a 5-3 win over Florida. He played the full game.
Analysis: He's going to get a solid number of games this season as the Bolts give Dwayne Roloson plenty of rest along the way. And that means that Mathieu Garon will have a bit more value than your standard handcuff.
News: The Lightning have signed Garon to a two-year, $2.6 million deal, according to the St. Petersburg Times.
Analysis: Garon will be Dwayne Roloson's back-up. Last season, Garon was 10-14-6 with three SOs in 36 games with the Jackets. His GAA was 2.72 and his save percentage was .901. He can still play heavy minutes and should give Rolie the Goalie ample time off to rest before next year's Cup run.
News: Garon recently underwent surgery to repair a torn elbow tendon, an injury he played through starting in January, Columbus Dispatch writer Aaron Portzline reports.
Analysis: It's doubtful that Garon will ever be a standout goalie, but this news makes his numbers from this year perhaps look a bit better.
News: Garon allowed just one goal on 27 shots to the Stars on Tuesday, but the Blue Jackets still lost, 3-0.
Analysis: Aside from a power-play goal by Dallas forward Steve Ott, Garon was flawless on the night and even made a few big saves; the two other scores by the Stars came with the net emptied. Still, he's not a recommendable fantasy option given Columbus' struggles with winning games in 2010-11.
News: Garon will start Tuesday against the Stars, according to Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch.
Analysis: David LeNeveu will back Garon up Tuesday, with Steve Mason still dinged up.
News: Garon will start Sunday against the Blues, according to the Blue Jackets' Official Twitter Feed.
Analysis: It's a decent match-up, as Garon gets the Blues at home, though both teams have been inconsistent this season. This will be the second straight start for Garon.
News: Garon is scheduled to start Friday against the Blackhawks, reports ESPN's Jesse Rogers.
Analysis: At 10-12-5, Garon has been his usual mediocre self this season. However, given Steve Mason's struggles lately (two wins in his last 12 starts), we expect Garon to get more ice time over the next few games as the Jackets play out the string. Neither guy makes for a compelling fantasy play, but if you need a warm body Friday, consider Garon available.
News: Garon will start Sunday's game against Vancouver, the Blue Jackets' official site reports.
Analysis: Garon, who has only won one of his last five starts, faces a Vancouver squad that has won two straight and sits atop the NHL standings with 107 points.
News: Garon was the first goalie off the ice and is therefore expected to start against Phoenix on Thursday, Columbus Dispatch writer Aaron Portzline reports.
Analysis: Garon hasn't been too reliable lately and Phoenix is 7-2-1 in their last 10. Anything can happen, but you'd probably be best off finding a different goalie for Thursday.
News: Garon stopped 32 shots in a 5-4 overtime win over Minnesota on Saturday.
Analysis: Columbus coughed up a two-goal lead in the final 5:07 of the third period, but Garon held on long enough to enable Antoine Vermette to pot the game-winning goal during the extra frame. After an excellent start to the season in October and November, Garon has since cooled to the point where he's only a situational option for fantasy owners in deeper formats.
News: Garon was the first goalie off the ice Saturday and is therefore expected to start against Minnesota, Columbus Dispatch writer Aaron Portzline reports.
Analysis: After an impressive showing in the fall, Garon hasn't been too sharp since. With 10 goals allowed in his last three starts, he's not looking like the greatest option. On the other hand, the opposing goalie (Niklas Backstrom) is riding a three-game losing streak himself.
News: Garon was first off the ice at the morning practice and is likely to start Wednesday night against the Blues, Thomas Reed of the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Steve Mason has yet to record a victory in his past four starts, so the Jackets will turn to Garon to help right the ship. In 29 games this season, Garon has posted a 2.55 GAA and .907 save percentage.
News: Garon allowed four goals on 26 shots in Wednesday's overtime loss to St. Louis.
Analysis: The subtext will show Garon and his teammates surrendering a 3-0 first period lead and subsequently losing in overtime to Chris Stewart. Neither Blue Jackets' netminder seems to want the position, as both Garon and Chris Mason have struggled to find consistency.
News: Garon stopped all 23 shots he faced Thursday after coming on for Steve Mason, but the Jackets couldn't quite claw back.
Analysis: Neither Garon nor Mason -- who allowed three goals on 14 shots -- has been particularly effective this season. If you can avoid Blue Jackets goalies altogether, you should probably do so.
News: Garon got the start in nets for Columbus on Sunday against Nashville.
Analysis: It was Garon's first start since Feb. 16, with Steve Mason now in the midst of a four-game win streak.
News: Garon got the start as expected Wednesday, making 26 saves in a 4-3 shootout loss.
Analysis: Steve Mason is battling a touch of bronchitis, so Garon could see plenty of extra work over the next week or two. The Blue Jackets have been playing much better recently, but Garon would still be a marginal fantasy starter when he does get the call.
News: Garon was the first goalie off the ice Wednesday morning, suggesting that he will likely start the Blue Jackets' evening game against the Kings, the Columbus Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Steve Mason has been suffering from bronchitis, so it looks like Garon is in line for his 21st start of the season Wednesday against a Kings' squad that is 7-1-2 over its last 10 games.
Garon Gets the Call in Net For Blue Jackets on Friday
News: Garon will be in net for Friday's game against the Avalanche, according to the Blue Jackets' official Twitter page.
Analysis: Garon will start Friday for the first time since Jan. 18. The Avlanche are averaging 2.98 goals per game this season - the sixth best mark in the league - so Garon will face a stiff test Friday night.
News: Garon stopped 20 of 22 shots in Tuesday's 3-2 shootout loss to Tampa Bay.
Analysis: Garon didn't have much work, but he played decent enough. The Jackets are playing back-to-back nights, but Garon may be pressed into another start because Steve Mason is suffering from a minor injury.
News: Garon will start Tuesday's game against the Lightning, the Blue Jackets' official site reports.
Analysis: It will be Garon's first turn since last Tuesday, with Steve Mason having started the team's two games since then.
News: Garon stopped 24 of 28 shots in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to Phoenix.
Analysis: Steve Mason is due back from his groin injury Friday, so unless he suffers a setback, Garon is likely ticketed for the bench in Columbus' next contest.
News: Garon will be between the pipes Tuesday as Steve Mason deals with a slight groin strain, the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Coach Scott Arniel seems optimistic that Mason will be healthy enough to play in the Jackets' next game Friday, so don't expect a long stretch of starts for Garon unless Mason has a setback.
News: Garon did little Saturday to strengthen his bid for the starter's job in Columbus, allowing five goals on 35 shots in a 6-4 loss at Los Angeles.
Analysis: In a platoon with Steve Mason, Garon is getting roughly 40% of the starts. He should get roughly 0% of your fantasy starts; despite having moderately better numbers than Mason, Garon's statistics probably would not help any fantasy owner.
News: Garon stopped 29 of 33 shots in Tuesday's 4-2 loss to Phoenix.
Analysis: Tuesday makes three straight poor starts in a row for Garon. Steve Mason has been a bit better of late, but not much. No matter who starts in goal for Columbus, they need to be on the bench in virtually all leagues for now.
News: Garon was the first goalie off the ice Tuesday and is expected to start against Phoenix the same day, Columbus Dispatch writer Aaron Portzline reports.
Analysis: Garon has allowed 10 goals out of the last 47 shots he's seen. That's obviously not going to cut it for fantasy owners. Still, the odds are that he'll bounce back soon enough, and Phoenix's offense is just about average.
News: Garon is expected to start in goal Sunday against Chicago, the Columbus Dispatch's Thomas Reed reports.
Analysis: Garon got pounded for six goals in his last start, but the Jackets are willing to overlook that aberration and roll with him for the fourth straight game.
News: Garon was the victim of a Canucks offense that wouldn't let up Thursday, as he allowed six goals on 22 shots before being pulled for Steve Mason.
Analysis: Mason allowed a goal on eight shots in relief, not exactly a threatening performance. Garon's been so great, he gets a mulligan on this one.
News: As expected, Garon will get the start against the Canucks on Thursday, the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: That's not a stellar matchup for Garon, but there's a chance the Blue Jackets may not be facing Roberto Luongo (who played Wednesday night) which would increase their, and Garon's, chances of snatching a win.
News: Garon stopped 29 of 30 shots in Tuesday's 3-1 win over the Flames.
Analysis: Steve Mason has been absolutely awful all season and Garon was recently named the new number one man in Columbus for the time being. Garon has been fantastic when given a chance this season and he needs to be owned in most leagues.
News: Garon will continue to get the start in net until the Blue Jackets feel Steve Mason has rediscovered his confidence, the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Garon will be between the pipes Tuesday against Calgary and Thursday against Vancouver, and likely Sunday against Chicago. The team has too much invested in Mason not to give him more chances, but in the short term Garon is the goalie to own in Columbus, if you have to have one.
News: Garon made 21 saves in a 2-1 loss to Dallas on Saturday night.
Analysis: The Jackets still view Steve Mason as a franchise goalie but he has been yanked in three in his past four starts. The Jackets are only a couple of points out of a playoff spot so expect Garon to continue to carry the load in the short term.
Garon Taking Over Goaltending Duties For Blue Jackets
News: Garon will start against the Stars on Saturday, the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Steve Mason has been brutal lately, having been pulled in three of his last four starts, which pretty much forces the team to resort to using Garon. "Right now, Matty should be the guy," said goaltending coach Dave Rook. "[Mason] has created a situation where, for the sake of the team, you have to put Matty in there, no question." Look for Garon to carry the starting load over the next few games at least. Garon is 7-3-2 with a respectable 1.97 GAA and .925 save percentage.
News: Garon entered Thursday's game in relief after Steve Mason gave up six goals in the first two periods and stopped all nine shots he faced.
Analysis: Garon has quite easily outplayed Mason this year and deserves the bulk of the starts going forward -- at least until Mason can show some more consistency. Garon's .925 save percentage and 1.97 GAA are sparkling numbers.
News: Garon made 27 saves in Wednesday's 3-2 overtime loss in Vancouver.
Analysis: He's playing well, but coach Scott Arniel hasn't yet tipped his hand as to whether Garon or Steve Mason will get the start Thursday in Edmonton. We suspect it'll be Mason, but Arniel may elect to roll with the relatively hot hand in Garon.
News: Garon will start against Vancouver on Wednesday, Columbus Dispatch writer Aaron Portzline reports.
Analysis: Garon saved 20 of 21 shots Monday, but his five showings before that saw him save less than 90 percent of shots.
News: Garon relieved Steve Mason early Monday and stopped 20 shots before allowing the overtime winner to Jarome Iginla.
Analysis: Expect Garon to get the start Wednesday, but beyond that coach Scott Arniel's plans for his goaltenders are anyone's guess.
News: Garon stopped 20 of the 23 shots he faced in a 4-1 loss to the Blues on Thursday.
Analysis: All three goals he allowed came on St. Louis power plays, so you can't fault him too much for this one. Steve Mason will likely be in net Saturday as coach Scott Arniel keeps trying to find ways to spark his listless club.
News: Garon will make his second straight start for the Blue Jackets on Thursday, the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Coach Scott Arniel doesn't seem to have a designated number one goalie at the moment, but with five games over the next eight days both Garon and Steve Mason should get some work.
News: Garon made 16 saves, and two more in the shootout, as the Blue Jackets beat the Stars 3-2 on Monday.
Analysis: It wasn't a stellar performance from Garon but he came through when it counted, and helped end a five-game losing streak for the Jackets. Columbus' next game is Thursday, but at this point there's no way to tell whether Garon or Steve Mason will get the call.
News: Garon is expected to start Monday against Dallas, the Columbus Dispatch's Thomas Reed reports.
Analysis: The Blue Jackets will turn to Garon in an effort to stop their five-game slide, but he allowed five goals in a shutout loss to the Sabres in his last start. Rolling with either Columbus goalie is a risky proposition right now.
News: Garon relieved starter Steve Mason in the first period of Saturday's game. He allowed three goals on 22 shots the rest of the way.
Analysis: The Jackets failed to muster much offense in a 7-2 loss and are really struggling right now. Avoid the Jackets' twine tenders for now.
News: Garon allowed five goals on 37 shots in Friday's 5-0 blanking at the hands of the Sabres.
Analysis: He actually didn't play that badly (three of the goals came on Buffalo power plays, and Garon stoned Sabres shooters twice on clean breakaways) but Steve Mason will be back in net on Saturday, and likely for the foreseeable future.
News: Garon made 21 saves Wednesday in the Blue Jackets' 4-3 OT win over the Islanders.
Analysis: He wasn't as sharp as he had been, but still came up big in overtime when the Jackets needed him. Look for Steve Mason to be back in net for Columbus in their next game, however.
News: Garon will start in goal Wednesday against the Islanders, the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: The Jackets will give Garon a start because of his strong history against New York (2-0-1 with a 1.48 goals-against average). Plus, he's been playing well, with shutouts in three of his last four starts.
News: Garon stopped all 35 shots he faced as the visiting Jackets ambushed the Sharks on Saturday, 3-0.
Analysis: This is how good he was on this night: Teammate Rick Nash picked up a hat trick, providing all of the Columbus offense, and Garon was named the game's first star. Garon has three shutouts in his past four games -- go back and read that again -- and if he isn't firmly entrenched as the best goalie in Columbus, the concrete is at least starting to harden.
News: Garon will be in goal for Saturday's game against the Sharks, Aaron Portzline of The Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Garon has a minuscule 1.28 GAA and is 4-1-0 in his six appearances this season, so he is a good option against what is just an average Sharks offense.
News: Garon made 21 saves in Columbus' 3-2 loss to Minnesota on Saturday night.
Analysis: Two of the goals came on the power play and through screens so he can't really be faulted. He's outplaying Steve Mason right now; expect him to continue to get most starts until he either implodes or Mason explodes. One of those days will come soon enough so enjoy his output right now.
Blue Jackets' Garon Tabbed For Third Straight Start Saturday
News: Garon will start Saturday against Minnesota, according to FOX Sports' Jeff Rimer.
Analysis: Garon is 4-0-0 with two shutouts, a miniscule 0.89 GAA and .966 SV%. Any goalie with those kinds of numbers is going to see ice time, we don't care who he is. For the time being, Garon appears to have supplanted Steve Mason as the No. 1 starter in Columbus, but we tend to think he's still on a relatively short leash. Like it or not, Mason is still the Jackets' goalie of the future, and coach Scott Arniel likely won't hesitate to put him back in if Garon throws up one or two bad starts. Roll Garon while the hot streak lasts, but monitor carefully.
News: Garon stopped all 25 shots he faced Thursday in Atlanta, his second consecutive shutout.
Analysis: He's also undefeated in four starts, while nominal starter Steve Mason has continued to struggle. Hard to put Garon on the bench after two straight shutouts.
News: Garon is expected to make his second straight start Thursday against Atlanta, the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Not only is Garon coming off a shutout performance Tuesday, but he's 4-0 lifetime against the Thrashers. There's no goalie controversy in Columbus yet, but if Garon keeps playing well and Steve Mason doesn't respond with some stellar netminding of his own, that could change in a hurry.
News: Garon stopped all 29 shots he faced in Tuesday's 3-0 win over Montreal.
Analysis: Garon has been brilliant in his three starts this season, but he still remains buried behind Steve Mason on the depth chart for the Jackets. It would take a serious injury to Mason for Garon to have any value more than insurance.
News: Garon will start against Montreal on Tuesday night, RDS.ca reports.
Analysis: Of the Blue Jackets' first 10 games, Steve Mason has been given eight starts, so he's clearly the No. 1 netminder right now. That being said, Garon has played well in his limited opportunities earning a pair of wins and delivering a 1.61 GAA and .938 save percentage in those outings.
News: Garon turned aside 28 of 29 shots in Monday's 2-1 win over Philadelphia.
Analysis: He's only started twice this season, but efforts like Monday's will have the team a bit more confident when they do give Steve Mason a night off.
News: Garon will be in net Monday for the Blue Jackets' matchup against the Flyers, the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: This will be Garon's second start of the season. He plays second fiddle to Steve Mason for goalie starts in Columbus so, even if he wins, it's unlikely to have much of an impact on the overall fantasy hockey population.
News: Garon could start Monday for a home game against the Flyers, the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Garon impressed in his season debut, allowing only two goals to the Wild in a win on Oct. 16. However, his fantasy value is limited as a backup to Steve Mason.
News: Garon will start Saturday against Minnesota, Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Jackets starter Steve Mason gave up five goals on 40 shots to Chicago on Friday night, so it looks like coach Scott Arniel will go with Garon on Saturday and give Mason a chance to clear his head. With a solid performance against the Wild, Garon could earn himself more playing time going forward.
News: Garon made 21 saves in Saturday's 3-2 win over Minnesota.
Analysis: He made several key saves late in the third to preserve the win. The Jackets remain committed to Steve Mason as their primary twine-tender but they won't hesitate to roll the talented Garon if they need a stable veteran force in the blue paint.
News: Coach Scott Arniel said Garon will "more than likely" play this weekend, the American Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Garon could see his first regular-season game this Saturday when Columbus faces Minnesota.
News:Erik Johnson scored on a power play with 1:01 to go in overtime past Mathieu Garon, keeping the St. Louis Blues' slim playoff hopes alive with a 2-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday night. A holding call on Marc Methot with 1:43 to go in overtime opened the door for the Blues, and Johnson scored his 10th of the season on a slap shot from the point. Garon made 32 saves for the Blue Jackets.
Analysis: Garon left Saturday's game against the Capitals with an undisclosed injury, but clearly he was OK to play on Monday and did quite well. Garon has had a few good moments in 2009-10, but he has mostly played like a .500 goalie. He will continue to serve as a backup in 2010-11, if Columbus doesn't trade him. Garon remains a low-end Fantasy flier. The Blue Jackets is also a low-end option.
News: The Columbus Dispatch reports that Blue Jackets G Mathieu Garon will start Monday at St. Louis. Garon was pulled early in Saturday's loss to the Capitals.
Analysis: Garon has been taking a bit of a back seat to Steve Mason lately with just two starts in the last couple of weeks. He clearly is feeling OK after being plowed into by Jason Chimera on Saturday, but won't be worth risking in Fantasy Week 25 (April 5-11). You'd be better off ignoring Mason and the Blue Jackets TG, too.
News: In Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Capitals, Columbus G Mathieu Garon was knocked to the ice by former teammate Jason Chimera and was on the ice for several minutes before play resumed. Garon continued, but allowed a goal almost immediately and was replaced by Steve Mason after making two saves on four shots.
Analysis: We're not sure about the extent of Garon's injury, but it looked like the knock he took definitely had an impact in his removal from the game. While he had his decent moments in March, Garon is at best a minimal Fantasy option when healthy, so continue to ignore him in the majority of leagues. The Blue Jackets TG is also barely worth worrying about.
News: Blue Jackets G Mathieu Garon saw his three-game win streak come to an end Saturday as Columbus fell 4-3 in overtime to the Islanders. Garon stopped 24 shots.
Analysis: Garon has played very well this month, but you knew his hot streak would come to an end some time. While Garon is clearly doing something right lately, Fantasy owners would have to be very desperate to use him at this critical point in the season. The Blue Jackets TG is also a low-end option.
News: Blue Jackets G Mathieu Garon turned away 18 of the 20 shots he faced on Friday, leading the Blue Jackets past the Wild 4-2. He's stopped 102 of his last 109 shots.
Analysis: Garon has won his last three starts, allowing only seven goals over his past four appearances. He's on a roll, and could continue to get starts. However, at 12-9-4 on the season, Garon is only worth using a stopgap Fantasy option while he's hot. The Blue Jackets TG has low-end Fantasy appeal.
News: Blue Jackets G Mathieu Garon made 28 saves, including several big stops in the final minute while Atlanta had two extra attackers during a 2-1 win Thursday. "I knew it was coming in the third because they're a team battling for a playoff spot right now," Garon said. The Thrashers were on the power play the last 1:25 after Jan Hejda was called for high sticking. They pulled Johan Hedberg for an extra attacker. Rich Peverley was wide with a one-timer from the left wing while faced with an almost vacant net. Zach Bogosian's hard slap shot from the point resulted in a blocker save by Garon. Then Niclas Bergfors drilled a hard shot from the right wing that hit Garon high on his chest -- he was able to smother the rebound -- with just a few seconds remaining.
Analysis: Garon has won his last two starts and has made 64 saves in the process. Don't be surprised if Garon stays in net while he is on a roll. It probably helps that Steve Mason has cooled off again. Garon is only worth using a stopgap Fantasy option while he is on a roll. The Blue Jackets TG has low-end Fantasy appeal.
News: Blue Jackets G Mathieu Garon stopped 36 shots on Tuesday, leading Columbus to a 5-2 win over the Ducks. He won for the first time in four games.
Analysis: Garon has a respectable 10-9-4 record this season, but his save percentage is barely over .900 and his GAA of 2.89 isn't particularly great, either. He'll continue to get a few starts here and there in relief of the disappointing Mason, but Garon isn't worth starting in anything but the deepest of average point leagues.
News: Blue Jackets G Mathieu Garon stopped 20 of 22 shots Monday after replacing Steve Mason 15 minutes into a 6-0 loss to the Kings.
Analysis: Garon has a respectable 9-9-4 record this season, but his save percentage is barely over .900 and his GAA of 2.89 isn't particularly great, either. He'll continue to get a few starts here and there in relief of the disappointing Mason, but Garon isn't worth starting in anything but the deepest of average point leagues.
News:Troy Brouwer's goal in the fourth round of the tiebreaker past Mathieu Garon gave the Blackhawks a 5-4 victory over Columbus on Sunday. Garon, who also allowed Patrick Kane to score in the shootout, held a 2-0 lead before Chicago scored four unanswered goals. He then made five saves in the third period to help force overtime and five saves in overtime to move to a shootout. After Antoine Vermette failed to score for the Blue Jackets, Brouwer's forehand beat Garon on the stick side for the clincher. "I got a move where I come down on [teammate Antti Niemi] in practice and I shoot low glove, so I figured ... it might work as well," Brouwer said.
Analysis: Garon has lost three straight shootouts after winning a NHL-best 13 straight. Tough break. Garon appears to be in a backup role again since coach Cluade Noel took over behind the bench for Ken Hitchcock. We expect Garon to get some starts down the stretch, but Steve Mason is likely to do most of the work in net. Garon remains a low-end Fantasy flier. The Blue Jackets TG also has low-end appeal.
News: Columbus G Mathieu Garon stopped 21 shots on Tuesday against the Avalanche but an avalanche is exactly what Colorado threw at him in the game. Garon allowed five goals to score and lost the game, 5-1.
Analysis: Garon has now alternated wins and losses over his last five starts and his record falls to 9-9-3 on the year. Clearly, he's winning one and losing one consistently. He's allowed 12 goals in his last three games combined and is struggling right now. Garon is a No. 3 option in average-point leagues. The Blue Jackets TG is also a barely-usable unit.
News: Blue Jackets G Mathieu Garon made 25 saves in Saturday's overtime win over the Blues.
Analysis: Garon is only 2-3 in his last five games, but continues to see a solid amount of starts as Steve Mason can't seem to put an end to his struggles. Still, you can only consider Garon a No. 3 option in average-point leagues. The Blue Jackets TG is also a barely-usable unit.
News: Columbus G Mathieu Garon allowed five goals on Tuesday night over two-plus periods before being removed from the game against the Flyers in the 3rd in favor of Steve Mason. Garon stopped 25 shots but gave up a goal in the 1st period, three in the 2nd and another in the 3rd before being lifted. Mason came on and went a perfect 7 for 7 on save opportunities as the Blue Jackets lost 5-3.
Analysis: Garon takes the loss in this one and has now dropped three of his last four starts since winning three straight to open January. His record in 2010 is now 4-3-0 and his record overall stands at 8-8-3 for the Blue Jackets. Mason, who has been the team's No. 1 option for much of the year, had also been struggling of late as he'd lost his last three straight starts. Clearly both goalies are having issues but after this one the Blue Jackets are likely to go back to Mason in net. The Blue Jackets TG remains a low-end option and so is both of its current members.
News: Blue Jackets G Mathieu Garon made 30 saves during a 4-2 win against the Blues on Monday. Garon, who ran his record to 9-3-0 against the Blues, was injured in the morning skate when a puck hit him in the wrist; his availability for the game was in question. He had been pulled after giving up three goals on nine shots in a 4-1 loss at St. Louis six days earlier. But he battled back from a 1-0 deficit on Monday to pull out his eighth victory on the season.
Analysis: Garon has won four of his last six outings and really has been giving Columbus the best chance to win in net. We aren't sure what has happened to Steve Mason, but it has been ugly for the sophomore netminder. Garon is the better start right now, if you are leaning on a Columbus netminder. The Blue Jackets TG remains a low-end option.
News: Blue Jackets G Mathieu Garon stopped 33 shots during a 3-0 loss to the Blackhawks on Thursday. Garon allowed a goal in each period and all three scores came at even strength. He lost for the second straight time after winning three in a row.
Analysis: Despite the two straight losses, Garon has still done well in net. He has just received only one goal in support. Garon has made most of the Blue Jackets' starts in the last few weeks and is starting to put some distance between him and Steve Mason. Still, we feel the two will continue to battle for PT down the stretch. Garon remains more of a low-end Fantasy option. The Blue Jackets TG is also a low-end option.
News: Columbus G Mathieu Garon did not have a good start on Tuesday against St. Louis. Garon stopped just six of the nine shots he faced in the 1st period before being pulled in favor of Steve Mason. Mason only allowed one goal the rest of the way but the damage was done for the 4-1 win for the Blues. Mason stopped 13 of 16 shots in relief.
Analysis: Garon had been the hot hand for Columbus as he'd won three straight coming into Tuesday's game. He was anything but hot on Tuesday against the Blues. Garon falls to 7-6-3 on the season with the loss but hopefully this is just a hiccup. Mason, 11-15-6, has been the team's No. 1 option but Columbus had been riding Garon's hot hand. This should change things again and Mason is likely to see a few more starts going forward. The Blue Jackets TG is still a low-end Fantasy option.
News:Mathieu Garon made 26 saves for his second shutout of the season, and Raffi Torres and Antoine Vermette scored in the Columbus Blue Jackets' 2-0 victory over the Dallas Stars on Sunday night. The shutout was the 16th of Garon's career.
Analysis: Garon has started the last three games and has won them all for Columbus. As per coach Ken Hitchcock's rule -- You win, You're in -- we expect Garon to continue to play in net until he cools off. Consider him a sleeper for Fantasy Week 15 (Jan. 11-17). The Blue Jackets TG is still a low-end Fantasy option.
News: Blue Jackets G Mathieu Garon made 20 saves during a 3-2 win against the Flames on Friday. Garon never trailed in the game and had a 3-1 lead before Rene Bourque scored 11:59 into the third. Garon has won his last two starts after going eight games without a victory.
Analysis: After breaking his losing skid on Thursday against the Oilers, Garon was back in net as per coach Ken Hitchcock's rule: You win, You're in. Hitchcock took away the starting goalie duties from Steve Mason because he has struggled through the first half of the season. Garon has been playing well lately. He has allowed two or fewer goals in five straight starts and now it seems the wins are coming. Garon remains a low-end Fantasy option, as is the Blue Jackets TG. But it is worth keeping tabs on Garon's progress.
News: Blue Jackets G Mathieu Garon made 24 saves during a 4-2 win against the Oilers on Thursday. The game was tied at 2 until Columbus scored 3:36 into the third on a power play. Jan Hejda gave Columbus a 4-2 cushion at 11:21. It was Garon's first win since Nov. 16.
Analysis: Coach Ken Hitchcock took away the starting goalie duties from Steve Mason because he has struggled through the first half of the season. He has given Garon a fair shot in net, but Garon has struggled to get wins. It hasn't totally been his fault since he has allowed two or fewer goals in four straight starts and has only one win. Garon remains a low-end Fantasy option, as is the Blue Jackets TG.
News: Vancouver got six goals on 17 shots against Columbus G Steve Mason, last season's NHL Rookie of the Year, during a 7-3 win over the Blue Jackets on Monday. Mason was replaced by Mathieu Garon at 14:53 of the second period. Mason actually held a 2-0 lead before Vancouver scored four unanswered goals. Mason was then pulled after allowing two goals in a 1:28 span in the second. Garon allowed one goal on seven shots.
Analysis: Garon has made 10 appearances since his last win on Nov. 16. It has been a tough season for the Blue Jackets all around. Garon is now in a goalie battle with Mason after Mason's awful first half. Coach Ken Hitchcock has a simple plan -- win and you are in. Unfortunately, Garon isn't winning. He has low-end Fantasy appeal until further notice.
News: Columbus G Mathieu Garon made 27 saves and allowed two goals in a 2-1 overtime loss to the Predators on Thursday. Garon held a 1-0 lead more than halfway through the third period when Andreas Thuresson broke up the shutout bid. Then David Legwand gave Nashville the win with a goal just 28 seconds into the overtime period. Garon's record dropped to 4-5-3 with the overtime loss.
Analysis: Garon went through the entire month of December without a win, participating in seven games. He has taken a loss in each of his last three games and is not giving Fantasy owners any reason to have him active. Mason will likely be back in net for the team's next contest and he has been better between the pipes of late. Garon is just a No. 3 Fantasy option at best while the Blue Jackets can be used as a No. 2 Fantasy unit.
News: Blue Jackets G Mathieu Garon allowed two goals to Todd Bertuzzi in Saturday's 2-1 loss to the Red Wings. Garon made 25 saves in defeat.
Analysis: Garon is now without a win since Nov. 16 as the Blue Jackets are making things very difficult for either of their goalies to pick up a victory. Garon remains just a handcuff to Steve Mason and is not worth owning as anything else in Fantasy play. The Blue Jackets TG is a low-end Fantasy option that shouldn't really be used at the moment.
News: The Columbus Blue Jackets were thrashed by the Phoenix Coyotes on Monday night as goalie Mathieu Garon did not fare so well. Garon allowed all five goals to score as he stopped just 18 of 23 shots to take the 5-2 loss.
Analysis: Garon did not play well on Monday night and the loss drops his season record to 4-4-2. This was only his third start in December and it doesnt seem like hes earned too many more. He is a handcuff to Steve Mason and is not worth owning as anything else in Fantasy play. The Blue Jackets TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Blue Jackets G Mathieu Garon entered Saturday's loss to Colorado just 4:15 into the game after starter Steve Mason was pulled. Garon stopped 22 of 24 shots.
Analysis: Garon gets about a start a week in place of Mason and doesn't have great numbers this season. The only people who should own him right now are people in deeper leagues who handcuff him with Mason.
News:Robert Lang stayed perfect in shootouts this season, scoring the winner past Mathieu Garon to give the Phoenix Coyotes a 2-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday. Shooting third after each team scored a shootout goal, Lang improved to 2 for 2 in tiebreakers this season when his wrister beat Garon, who made 26 saves in regulation and overtime. The loss was the second in a row for Garon in shootouts after he set an NHL record with 13 consecutive tiebreaker wins. He is 18-6 in shootouts. "I just got beat 5-hole," Garon said. "I was trying to be patient and I waited a little too long."
Analysis: We are not used to seeing Garon falter this much in the shootout. He is usually money when the game goes past overtime. Garon has been a good safety net for Columbus this season, but if you look at his stats, he hasn't been much better than the struggling Steve Mason. Garon remains more of a Fantasy reserve and flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Blue Jackets TG is a No. 2 option.
News:Steve Sullivan scored the winning goal in the fifth round of the shootout past Mathieu Garon to give the Nashville Predators a 4-3 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday. Sullivan beat Garon with a wrist shot under the goalie's pad for the winner. Garon had won an NHL-record 13 consecutive shootouts. He made 36 saves in regulation and overtime. Garon never led in the game and trailed at three different junctures.
Analysis: Garon did a nice job keeping Columbus in the game Thursday. He eventually got them to a point where he had a great chance to steal a win, but Garon came up short in the shootout which is rare. Garon is winless in his last four outings. He continues to back up Steve Mason. Garon remains more of a Fantasy reserve and flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Blue Jackets TG is a No. 2 option.
News: Blue Jackets G Steve Mason was pulled in the second period of a 6-3 loss to the Maple Leafs on Thursday. Mason got the hook after Phil Kessel extended the lead to 4-1 at the 10:55 mark. Mason allowed four goals on 14 shots. He was replaced by Mathieu Garon, who ended up making nine saves on 11 shots.
Analysis: Garon's hot start is quickly becoming a distant memory. He has lost twice in his last three appearances (two relief outings) and has allowed 10 goals in that span. Mason isn't playing much better, so Columbus definitely has a goalie mess on their hands. Garon remains more of a Fantasy reserve and flier in leagues that use average points per game.
News: Columbus G Mathieu Garon allowed five goals to score on Tuesday night in a 5-3 loss to Montreal. Garon stopped 24 shots in all and possesses a 3-2 lead entering the 3rd period. That is when it went awry for the netminder. He gave up three straight goals in the 3rd to take the loss.
Analysis: The defeat drops Garon's record on the season to 4-3-0 for the Blue Jackets. He's now lost two straight starts after winning his previous three. Garon has looked better than starter Steve Mason at times this season but remains just the back up. Garon remains more of a Fantasy reserve and flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Blue Jackets TG is more of a No. 2 option.
News: The Rangers peppered Blue Jackets starting goalie Steve Mason and beleaguered backup Mathieu Garon all night long during a 7-4 win on Monday. Marian Gaborik, Artem Anisimov and rookie defenseman Michael Del Zotto wiped out the early 2-0 deficit. Sean Avery scored at 6:12 of the second period to make it 4-2 and chase Mason -- last season's NHL rookie of the year -- who made only 14 saves. Garon was under siege as soon as he came in. Avery, who hadn't scored in 15 games, added his second goal of the night just 51 seconds later on the first shot Garon faced. New York made it 2 for 2 just 20 seconds after that when Gaborik netted his second goal and 18th this season. New York had three goals on its first five shots against Garon, who was bailed out later in the period when Christopher Higgins and Ryan Callahan both hit posts with shots. When Garon finally did secure the puck with a save, he heard mock cheers from the festive Madison Square Garden crowd that had been longing to see a win. Garon finished with 11 saves.
Analysis: Garon lost for the first time in four decisions on Monday. He definitely didn't appear ready to come off the bench against the Rangers, but he remained in net anyway since Columbus didn't want to do any further damage to Mason. Garon has outplayed Mason in the early season, but Columbus isn't ready to make a change in net. Garon remains more of a Fantasy reserve and flier in leagues that use average points per game.
News:Jakub Voracek scored the winner in the fourth round of the shootout and Mathieu Garon made 23 saves to lift the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 3-2 victory against the Edmonton Oilers on Monday night. After Voracek's goal, Mathieu Garon stopped Gilbert Brule to secure Columbus' fourth victory in five games. All the goals in regulation were on the power play with Edmonton taking a 2-1 lead on Lubomir Visnovsky's score 5:48 into the third period before Antoine Vermette tied it with 7:34 left on a redirection.
Analysis: Garon won his last start in a shootout on Friday against Anaheim and is now 18-4 all-time in shootouts. He is very clutch when it is just him and the shooter. Garon has won his last three decisions and got the start Monday because Steve Mason had a minor case of back spasms. Garon has been very solid in a backup role for Columbus this season and has definitely started to earn the trust of the coaching staff. However, amid all Mason's struggles, it's going to take a lot for Garon to overtake Mason in net. Garon remains more of a Fantasy reserve and flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Blue Jackets TG is more of a No. 2 option.
News: The Columbus Dispatch reports that Blue Jackets G Steve Mason missed the morning skate Monday with back spasms. He should be OK to back up Mathieu Garon on Monday, however.
Analysis: Mason is off to an awful start this season with a 3.67 GAA and .879 save percentage, and maybe these back spasms have been plaguing him for a while now. You're probably better off just avoiding him for Fantasy Week 7 (Nov. 16-22) unless you have no viable replacement.
News:Rick Nash scored the winning shootout goal and also had a goal in regulation, and Mathieu Garon stopped both Anaheim shooters in the tiebreaker to give Columbus a 3-2 victory Friday. Garon stepped in for Steve Mason and stopped 32 shots to win in his first home start. He improved to 17-4 all-time in shootouts. Garon made the save of the night late in the second period, robbing Ryan Getzlaf with a lunging glove save on a nifty back door pass from Teemu Selanne. "Well, I think that's what we needed," Garon said of the overall effort. "As a team we worked hard, we dominated and we wanted to get back on track and that's what we did tonight."
Analysis: Garon has been very solid in a backup role for Columbus this season and has definitely started to earn the trust of the coaching staff. However, amid all Mason's struggles, it's going to take a lot for Garon to overtake Mason in net. Garon remains more of a Fantasy reserve and flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Blue Jackets TG is more of a No. 2 option.
News: Blue Jackets G Steve Mason allowed three goals on six shots and was yanked after playing just 7:32 during Wednesday's 9-1 loss to the Red Wings. Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock put him back in to start the second period. He allowed eight goals on 27 shots. Mason's replacement, Mathieu Garon, made several tough saves the rest of the first period, but couldn't see around Todd Bertuzzi's screen to stop Niklas Kronwall's third on a slap shot from the point with the Red Wings on the power play to make it 4-0 at 11:57. Garon made 11 saves in 12 minutes.
Analysis: We know Mason has had some struggles to begin the season, but Columbus is not giving up on someone they view as a franchise goalie. Garon will play when needed, but he remains more of a Fantasy reserve and flier in leagues that use average points per game.
News: Columbus G Mathieu Garon picked up his second win of the season on Thursday, beating the Thrashers 4-3. He made 32 saves in the game, allowing three goals as his record improved to 2-1-0 on the season.
Analysis: Garon has three decisions to his credit this season and five total appearances. Steve Mason should continue to get the bulk of the starts for Columbus this season, making Gardon pretty much just a handcuff for Mason and a flier in leagues that use weekly averages. The Blue Jackets TG is a high-end option.
News: Columbus G Mathieu Garon had a rough start on Thursday against the Oilers, his former team, and came away on the losing end of a 6-4 result. He made 27 saves in the game and allowed five goals. His record dropped to 1-1-0 on the season with the performance.
Analysis: Garon was coming off of a shutout in his previous start against Phoenix, making 36 saves in that start. He started off the 2008-09 season as the Edmonton starter before getting shipped off to Pittsburgh. In Columbus, Garon has little shot at overtaking the starting job from second-year goalie Steve Mason, making him just a No. 3 option and handcuff for Mason. The Blue Jackets TG on the other hand is a high-end option with Mason usually in net.
News:Rick Nash and R.J. Umberger scored goals, Mathieu Garon stopped 36 shots and the Blue Jackets beat Phoenix 2-0 on Saturday night in the Coyotes' home opener. It was Garon's third career shutout of the Coyotes, his first with Columbus.
Analysis: This was Garon's first start of the season over Steve Mason, who got pulled in his previous outing. Garon began the 2008-09 season as Edmonton's top goalie, but when he couldn't get the job done he was relegated to backup duties and eventually shipped to Pittsburgh. He was 8-9-0 with a 3.12 goals-against average and .894 save percentage in 19 games. As long as Mason is healthy, Garon will probably see just one appearance a week at best despite this shutout. He has little Fantasy value outside of being a handcuff for Mason. The Blue Jackets TG on the other hand is a high-end option with Mason usually in net.
News: Columbus G Mathieu Garon came on 1:34 into the third period of Thursday's 6-3 loss to the Sharks in relief of Steve Mason who allowed five goals. Garon made seven saves and allowed one goal in the third period.

News:The Sports Xchange reports Blue Jackets G Mathieu Garon figures to play 20 to 25 games this season as Steve Mason's backup. The Blue Jackets, filling a need to support Mason with a veteran, signed Garon to a two-year, $2 million free agent contract over the summer. He won the Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh last spring.

He was 8-9-0 with a 3.12 goals-against average and .894 save percentage in 19 games. As long as Mason is healthy, Garon will probably see just one appearance a week. He has very little Fantasy value Draft Day and is best used as a handcuff option for Mason owners.
News:The Columbus Dispatch reports the Blue Jackets have signed goalie Mathieu Garon to a two-year, $2.4 million contract. Garon will serve as Steve Mason's backup goalie.

He was 8-9-0 with a 3.12 goals-against average and .894 save percentage in 19 games. As long as Mason is healthy, Garon likely won't get much PT in net. He has very little Fantasy value Draft Day and is best used as a handcuff option for Mason owners. The Blue Jackets TG will be a high-end Fantasy option Draft Day.
News:Mathieu Garon, playing for only the fourth time since joining the Penguins in mid-January, made 28 saves for his second Pittsburgh victory during a 6-1 rout of the Islanders Thursday. Garon fell behind 1-0 5:05 into the first before shutting New York down the rest of the way. He made 18 saves over the final two scoreless periods.
Analysis: Garon began the season as the Oilers' starting goalie and a viable No. 2 Fantasy option. But after struggling he was replaced in net by Dwayne Roloson and then eventually shipped to Pittsburgh to serve as Marc-Andre Fleury's seldom-used backup. Garon is headed for free agency in the offseason and could latch on with another team. He likely won't find a starting gig, so his Draft Day 2009 appeal will be low until further notice. The Penguins TG is a high-end Fantasy option because of Fleury.
News: Penguins G Mathieu Garon made 21 saves, in only his second start since being traded to Pittsburgh on Jan. 17, during Sunday's 6-4 win against the Bruins. Garon trailed 2-1 and 3-2 before Pittsburgh scored four times in the third period to steal the game from Boston.
Analysis: Marc-Andre Fleury started the previous 19 games heading into Sunday, so despite picking up Garon in a trade, they haven't had much need for the veteran goalie. He came into the season as a viable Fantasy option, but after losing his starting status in Edmonton and becoming a backup in Pittsburgh, he now has very low-end appeal. The Penguins TG, however, is a high-end Fantasy option because of Fleury.
News: Penguins backup G Mathieu Garon replaced an ineffective Marc-Andre Fleury in Sunday's 5-2 loss to the Capitals. Garon saved all 14 shots he faced in the final 26:39 of the game.
Analysis: Garon might see a bit more action these last few weeks of the season with Fleury struggling so much lately, but he's not quite worth starting in Fantasy play just yet. Keep an eye on his numbers in Fantasy Week 21 (Feb. 23-29) in case he plays well enough to spark some goalie controversy in Pittsburgh.
News:Jason Blake beat Pittsburgh G Mathieu Garon with a wrist shot with 9:55 left and the Maple Leafs held on to beat the Penguins 5-4 on Saturday night. Garon Garon was making his first start since being acquired in a trade from Edmonton on Jan. 16. Garon made 21 saves in the game as his record fell to 6-9-0 on the season.
Analysis: Garon won't be doing all that much in Pittsburgh as Marc-Andre Fleury is clearly the top goalie in Pittsburgh. He isn't really even worth taking a flier on because he won't play most weeks. The Penguins TG is a high-end option.
News:The Sports Xchange reports looking to spark No. 1 goalie Marc-Andre Fleury to another strong finish, the Penguins acquired veteran backup goalie Mathieu Garon on Saturday. General manager Ray Shero said after the trade that Fleury, who has struggled since a strong nine-game start, will benefit from having a stable veteran at No. 2. Last season, Fleury played his best hockey after the recall of tested veteran Ty Conklin. Garon, who had been with Edmonton, came at a cost. The Penguins traded goalie Dany Sabourin, forward prospect Ryan Stone and a fourth-round pick to the Oilers for Garon. Sabourin is Fleury's close friend and road roommate, and the Penguins hope this move will jumpstart Fleury, who last summer signed a seven-year deal worth $35 million.
Analysis: The mind game Pittsburgh hopes to play with Fleury seems to already paying immediate dividends. He posted a shutout Sunday against the Rangers and looked a lot like the kid who led Pittsburgh to the Stanley Cup finals in 2007-08. Fleury has been a little slow to recover from groin injury that sidelined him earlier this season, but all he needs is a good stretch of games to get his confidence back up. Fleury still remains a No. 1 Fantasy goalie. Garon might get a start every once in a while, but remains more of a flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Penguins TG is a high-end option.
News: The Pittsburgh Penguins and Edmonton Oilers each tried to shore up a weak spot by swapping backup goaltenders Saturday, with the Penguins acquiring Mathieu Garon for Dany Sabourin, minor league forward Ryan Stone and a fourth-round draft pick in 2011.
Analysis: The deal involves two goalies who weren't satisfying their teams. Sabourin, at 28, is three years younger than Garon. Sabourin, a third-teamer last season, is 6-8-2 with an .898 save percentage that ranked 36th in the league and a 2.85 goals-against average. Garon has similar numbers - a 6-8 record, an .895 save percentage and a 3.17 goals-against average - but was Edmonton's starter in 2007-08 before losing his job to Dwayne Roloson. Last season, Garon was 26-18-1 with a 2.66 goals-against average. Garon is pretty much a Fantasy flier in leagues that use average points per game.
News:Shawn Horcoff broke a tie with 6:35 left, and Mathieu Garon made 38 saves in the Edmonton Oilers' 3-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Friday. The Avalanche pulled Andrew Raycroft with 1:24 left, but couldn't slip anything past Garon, who was playing in his 200th career game. Garon won for the first time in five outings.
Analysis: Garon has made just two appearances in January and one of them was in relief. Edmonton has turned to Dwayne Roloson as their No. 1 goalie and Garon has been relegated to backup duties. Garon is pretty much a Fantasy flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Oilers TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Oilers G Dwayne Roloson lasted just one period Friday against the Sharks, but it was enough to saddle him with the loss as San Jose rolled to a 4-1 win. San Jose scored three times on Roloson, who made seven saves, in the first period before Mathieu Garon replaced him to start the second. Garon allowed just one power-play score on 21 shots to finish out the game.
Analysis: Garon did well in relief Friday, but it's still not enough to regain him the starting job. He had a golden opportunity to begin the season, but blew it. Now, Garon is pretty much a Fantasy flier in leagues that use average points per game.
News: Oilers G Mathieu Garon made 22 saves during a 3-2 loss to the Senators Tuesday. Antoine Vermette set up the winning power-play goal in the third period when he sent a pass back to Brian Lee, who beat Garon with a shot from the point. Garon lost his third straight start.
Analysis: Garon made his first start since he was yanked in a 9-2 loss to Chicago two weeks ago. He has gotten a few chances to reclaim his stake as Edmonton's No. 1 goalie, but continues to fall short. Garon is the backup right now in Edmonton and has minimal Fantasy value. The Oilers TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: The Blackhawks just could not be denied on Tuesday night and it didn't matter who the Edmonton Oilers put in net to stop them. Starting goalie Mathieu Garon stopped 16 shots but allowed five goals in 32:26 on the ice before giving way to Dwayne Roloson. Roloson wasn't much better allowing four goals the rest of the way in the 9-2 loss.
Analysis: Garon had actually won two of his last three starts prior to Tuesday and the one he lost he gave up just one goal. The Blackhawks made mince meat of him, however, and his record falls to 5-7-0. Coach Craig MacTavish has used Garon quite a lot lately despite naming Dwayne Roloson his top goalie. The coach seems confused on what to do and it appears he will just start who he feels like. Garon still remains more of a No. 3 Fantasy goalie at this time. The Oilers TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Oilers G Mathieu Garon needed only to make 14 saves Thursday against the Panthers, but allowed one too many goals in a 2-0 loss. Florida broke the deadlock with five minutes to play in the second period on a power play, as Stephen Weiss fired a one-timer past Garon from the top of the circle. Radek Dvorak added an empty-netter to secure the Panthers' victory.
Analysis: Garon has started three of the Oilers' last four games, good enough to win all three had he gotten some offense Thursday. Coach Craig MacTavish has used Garon quite a lot lately despite naming Dwayne Roloson his top goalie. The coach seems confused on what to do and it appears he will just start who he feels like. Garon is playing well, but still remains more of a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Oilers TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Oilers G Mathieu Garon made 32 saves during Friday's 5-4 win and stopped two of three attempts in the shootout, improving to 11-0 in the tiebreaker since joining Edmonton as a free agent in July 2007. Garon built a 3-0 lead after one period before Los Angeles scored four unanswered goals in the second, including two on the power play.
Analysis: Garon has started the last two games for Edmonton and has won both. Don't look now but coach Craig MacTavish might once again be trusting enough to treat Garon as his top goalie. However, with three capable netminders in Edmonton, Garon could be back in the bench in no time if he struggles. Despite his recent run, Garon remains a low-end Fantasy option. The Oilers TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News:Mathieu Garon made 23 saves to help the Edmonton Oilers beat Dallas 5-2 on Wednesday night in the Stars' second game without suspended agitator Sean Avery. The Stars finally scored 1:07 into the third. Garon made the initial save on Fabian Brunnstrom's shot, but Mike Modano tucked the rebound through the goalie's legs. Garon won for the first time since Oct. 18.
Analysis: Garon started for the first time Wednesday since Nov. 6. He was supposed to be in net over the weekend before the flu sat him down. With his strong performance against the Stars, Garon could have earned himself another start, but coach Craig MacTavish still considers Dwayne Roloson his top netminder. Until Garon gets back in net full time, he has little to no Fantasy value. The Oilers TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News:The Sports Xchange reports G Mathieu Garon was supposed to make his first start in nearly a month, but came down with the flu on Edmonton's two-game road trip and sat out both games which ended Sunday against the Flyers. He's got major rust, having not started a game since Nov. 6.
Analysis: Garon has fallen on hard times since early in the season. He came into 2008-09 as the Oilers' top goalie and won his first three starts. But when he struggled, Dwayne Roloson and Jeff Drouin-Deslaurie shined. Now they seemed to be favored in coach Craig MacTavish's eyes. Until Garon gets back in net, he has little to no Fantasy value.
News: Oilers G Dwayne Roloson did not have a smooth night in net Thursday against the Red Wings while making his first start since being named Edmonton's No. 1 goalie. Roloson allowed three goals on 10 shots 10:11 into the game before being replaced by Mathieu Garon, who lost the starting job to Roloson. Garon allowed just one goal the rest of the way on 25 shots in a 4-3 loss.
Analysis: Coach Craig MacTavish had all of these good things to say about Roloson recently and seemed pretty confident when he handed him the starting job. Let's hope he isn't having second thoughts after Thursday's poor outing. For now, Roloson is still Edmonton's top goalie, but that doesn't mean Garon can't steal it back at some point. Consider Garon a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game.
News:The Sports Xchange reports that Oilers G Dwayne Roloson has officially won his job back. After losing it to Mathieu Garon last season, Roloson became an expendable asset that the Oilers couldn't get rid of because of his $3.6 million cap hit. But Garon stumbled a little bit in late October and the Oilers don't seem all that interested in giving him a chance to rebound. He has only started one of Edmonton's last 10 games while Roloson played six of the last 10. "Rolie has just been on top of his game," said head coach Craig MacTavish.
Analysis: While Roloson may have taken care of Garon, he still has Jeff Drouin-Deslaurie to worry about. The Oilers goalie situation is a bit of a mess right now, so look to Roloson as nothing more than a low-end No. 2 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game if he can continue to snipe starts. The Oilers TG is also a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News:The Sports Xchange reports Oilers G Mathieu Garon watched Saturday's game against the Avalanche from the bench. Last year's starter has only appeared in two of Edmonton's last 10 games.
Analysis: Garon has fallen a long ways after winning his first three starts of the season in impressive fashion. He has lost his last four and is losing even more PT to Dwayne Roloson and Jeff Drouin-Deslaurie. Fantasy owners should likely keep Garon reserved in Fantasy until he gets back in net more than once every few weeks.
News: All of Pittsburgh's goals during a 5-4 win Thursday over Edmonton came against Mathieu Garon, who allowed five goals in 20 shots during his first start in four games. Jeff Drouin-Deslaurie, Edmonton's No. 3 goalie, came on after Peter Sykora's second goal to stop all 14 shots he faced.
Analysis: Garon has lost four straight starts and is losing his grasp on the starting job since Dwayne Roloson has been pretty good in net lately. Garon has allowed 18 goals during his losing streak and appears to be a very risky start in Fantasy at this time. Consider him a poor start for Week 6 (Nov. 10-16) unless he someone starts Sunday against the Devils and performs well. The Oilers TG remains a decent No. 2 or No. 3 Fantasy option.
News:The Sports Xchange reports Oilers G Dwayne Roloson started Sunday's game in Philadelphia, marking the first time this season he's played back-to-back games. Head coach Craig MacTavish is going with the hot hand while Mathieu Garon tries to regain his form.
Analysis: Roloson has won his last two starts while Garon has dropped three straight after winning his first three. The sad fact remains for Garon that he can't afford to struggle with Roloson and Jeff Drouin-Deslaurie still on the Oilers' roster. Garon should eventually regain his form and remain a nice No. 2 Fantasy option. Right now, however, he is a bit of a risky start Week 5 (Nov. 3-9). The Oilers TG is still a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Oilers G Mathieu Garon stopped 22 shots during a 3-1 loss to the Predators Thursday. Patric Hornqvist, who was low in the slot, opened the scoring when he tipped the puck in the net, beating Garon to his glove side at 9:59. In the second period, the Predators took a 2-0 lead when Shea Weber, again a few feet inside the blue line, fired another one-timer that also went to Garon's glove side at 1:28. At 9:57 of the third period, Martin Erat scored from the top of the slot beating Garon to his glove side. Garon is 0-5 against the Predators in his past five starts
Analysis: Garon has now lost his last three starts and has allowed 12 goals in the process. If he is not careful, he could end up losing some starts to Dwayne Roloson and Jeff Drouin-Deslauire. Garon remains a low-end No. 2 Fantasy goalie at this time, while the Oilers TG is also at best a No. 2 option.
News: Edmonton was beaten by Vancouver on Saturday in an all Canadian matchup and Oilers goalie Mathieu Garon had his worst start of the year. Garon allowed six goals and stopped 24 shots in the 6-3 loss. Garon came into the game 3-1 but has now lost two in a row.
Analysis: Garon had allowed more than two goals in a start just once before Saturday's six goals allowed. That's 10 goals in two starts for Garon. Oilers coach Craig MacTavish is having a hard time splitting starts between his three goalies, but Garon is the unquestioned starter despite Saturday's poor effort. He will see most of the games in net. Consider Garon and the Oilers TG both No. 2 Fantasy options.
News: Oilers G Mathieu Garon stopped 21 shots during a 4-1 loss Thursday against the Avalanche. Garon was able to shut out Colorado in the first period, but then allowed three second-period goals after Edmonton staked him a 1-0 lead. Garon lost for the first time in four starts.
Analysis: Garon has allowed more than two goals in a start just once -- Thursday. Oilers coach Craig MacTavish is having a hard time splitting starts between his three goalies, but Garon is the unquestioned starter and will see most of the games in net. Consider Garon and the Oilers TG both No. 2 Fantasy options.
News:The Sports Xchange reports the Oilers' goaltending situation remains crowded and confused. They didn't want to start the season with three goalies but didn't have a choice -- Mathieu Garon is their undisputed starter; they can't send top prospect Jeff Drouin-Deslaurie to the minors without risking losing him on waivers; and Dwayne Roloson is a 39-year-old making $3.6 million, not an easy player to trade. So there they are, forced to give up one of their roster spots to a third goalie. The goalies, in turn, don't get as much crease time in practice, and the backups -- Roloson and Drouin-Deslaurie -- have to go long stretches between starts. "The most important part of this is being patient," said Roloson, who got his first start of the season Wednesday at Chicago and will take a seat while Garon returns to the nets Thursday at Colorado. "Realistically, it's out of my control. It's up to (head coach) Craig MacTavish who plays. So whatever he says goes. At this point, I have to make sure I'm ready to go whenever he tells me when to go."
Analysis: MacTavish knows it's not an ideal situation, but there's nothing he can do about it until one of the goalies -- presumably Roloson -- is moved. "He's had a terrific attitude," MacTavish said of Roloson. "As I said at the start of the year, there are going to be different pressure points for each one of these goalies. There are going to be difficult situations to handle at times, but so far, it's been so good. It's all fresh right now, they all know that they are going to get an opportunity and they've done a great job handling what can be an untenable situation." Garon will likely see the majority of starts over Roloson and Drouin-Deslaurie. Consider Garon and the Oilers TG both No. 2 Fantasy options. While Roloson and Drouin-Deslaurie has minimal Fantasy value.
News: Oilers G Mathieu Garon didn't waver as he trailed by two goals Saturday against Calgary and eventually picked up his third straight win as Edmonton rallied for a 3-2 victory. The Flames grabbed the lead just after the four-minute mark of the first period on the power play. Daymond Langkow fed a pass from behind the net to Todd Bertuzzi for a one-timer past Garon for his fifth of the season. Calgary made it 2-0 on another man advantage with eight minutes remaining. Langkow slipped a shot through Garon's pads, and Edmonton defenseman Jason Strudwick inadvertently banked the puck off his goalie and in while trying to prevent it from trickling into the net. Garon made 31 saves in the win.
Analysis: Garon has not allowed more than two goals in any of his first three starts this season and has failed to start just one of Edmonton's four games. He will likely see the majority of starts over Dwayne Roloson and Jeff Drouin-Deslaurie. Consider Garon and the Oilers TG both No. 2 Fantasy options.
News:Mathieu Garon made 33 saves and Shawn Horcoff, Sheldon Souray and Lubomir Visnovsky scored to lead the Edmonton Oilers to a 3-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday. Garon and the Oilers trailed 2-1 after Rob Niedermayer scored 4:10 in the second period, but Garon stayed strong in net and secured the win with 15 third-period saves.
Analysis: Garon now has allowed just four goals in his first two games, both wins. He has started both of Edmonton's first two games and will likely see the majority of starts over Dwayne Roloson and Jeff Drouin-Deslaurie. Consider Garon and the Oilers TG both No. 2 Fantasy options.
News: Oilers G Mathieu Garon stopped 31 shots and picked up the 3-2 win Sunday against the Avalanche as Dustin Penner scored with 5.4 seconds left. Garon never trailed in the game and allowed two even-strength goals.
Analysis: Garon started Sunday's opener for Edmonton and looked strong in a win. He is expected to see most of the starts in net for the Oilers, but does have Dwayne Roloson and Jeff Drouin-Deslaurie nipping at his heels. Consider Garon and the Oilers TG both No. 2 Fantasy options.
News:The Sports Xchange reports Oilers goaltender Mathieu Garon, who went an incredible 10-0 in shootouts last season, suspects it'll be difficult, it not impossible, to duplicate that record again this year. "The shooters have seen me a lot now, so they know me more," he said. "So we'll see."
Analysis: Garon ended up being a great acquisition for Edmonton in 2007-08 as he went 26-18-1 with a 2.66 GAA and .913 save percentage. He also had four shutouts. Garon heads into the season as Edmonton's No. 1 goalie, but he will have Dwayne Roloson and Jeff Drouin-Deslaurie breathing down his neck. Look at Garon as nothing more than a No. 2 Fantasy goalie.
News:Mathieu Garon allowed three goals on 14 shots and was chased in favor of Dwayne Roloson in the second period of Thursday's 5-1 loss at Colorado. It was only the second loss in nine games for Garon.
Analysis: Despite this poor outing, Garon might be one of the most unheralded and underated Fantasy options available, but the fact remains he has been winning games despite some less than stellar performances. He is worth using as a No. 2 Fantasy goalie and the same goes for the Oilers TG.
News:Mathieu Garon stopped all four shots in overtime and 28 total shots to help the Edmonton Oilers defeat the St. Louis Blues 4-3 on Tuesday night. Garon also turned away the six shots he faced in the third period.
Analysis: Garon has won 11 games in his last 16 outings. He might be one of the most unheralded and now underated Fantasy options available, but the fact remains he is winning games despite some less than stellar performances. He is worth using as a No. 2 Fantasy goalie and the same goes for the Oilers TG.
News: Oilers G Mathieu Garon stopped 33 of 38 shots during a 6-5 win Sunday against the Blackhawks. Garon has now won six of his last seven starts. The five goals allowed were the most since allowing five to Nashville on Feb. 19.
Analysis: In his last 15 outings, Garon has won 10 games. He might be one of the most unheralded Fantasy options on the market, but the fact remains he is winning games despite some awful outings. He is worth using as a No. 2 Fantasy goalie. The same goes for the Oilers TG.
News:Mathieu Garon made 30 saves and nearly recorded his fifth shutout of the season and 15th of his career, but the puck bounced around the crease until Dan Fritsche whacked it into the back of the net to send the home crowd into a frenzy. The Edmonton Oilers held off Columbus 2-1 on Friday night after the Blue Jackets tied it with less than one second left in regulation.
Analysis: Garon might not be putting up All-Star performances, but the Oilers are backing him up with offense. He has won 15 of his last 24 outings. Garon continues to have a firm grasp on the starting gig in Edmonton and has emerged as a No. 2 Fantasy goalie. The Oilers TG is a low-end Fantasy option.
News: The Predators came out strongly, scoring on two of their first three shots on goalie Mathieu Garon who was chased after the first period. Garon gave up three goals on 12 shots and gave way to Dwayne Roloson the rest of the way. The loss ends a four-game winning streak for Garon.
Analysis: Garon might not be putting up All-Star performances, but the Oilers are backing him up with offense. He has won 14 of his last 23 outings. Garon continues to have a firm grasp on the starting gig in Edmonton and has emerged as a No. 2 Fantasy goalie. The Oilers TG is a low-end Fantasy option.

Analysis: Garon hasn't been awful since being named the starting goalie in January. He has 22 wins and is six games over .500 at this time. Garon continues to have a firm grasp on the starting gig in Edmonton and has emerged as a No. 2 Fantasy goalie. The Oilers TG is a low-end Fantasy option.
News: Oilers G Mathieu Garon was bailed out by a Fernando Pisani power-play goal with 29 seconds left in regualtion, and then stepped up by stopping all three shooters in a shootout Tuesday against the Red Wings to pick up the 4-3 win. Garon had stopped the first 26 shots he saw through two periods before allowing three goals on 11 shots in the third period. He finished the game with 40 saves as he won for the second straight start.

News: Oilers G Mathieu Garon got down early Sunday against the Avalanche, but didn't allow a goal over the last two periods and won 3-2. He made 27 saves as he stopped a three-game losing streak. Sunday was also the first time in four starts Garon allowed less than three goals.

Edmonton has lost three straight overall, allowing 14 goals during that span to further damage their chances of climbing into Western Conference playoff contention.

"It's one of the first times I've won here and I think it's huge for us starting a road trip."

"I love the aggressiveness that he demonstrates in coming out and challenging the shooters," MacTavish said. "I don't know why more goalies don't employ that strategy. The shooters get a lot of the credit, but the way he has been playing all we need is one goal out of the three and usually that is enough."
Analysis: It was the third straight start for Garon, slated to be the go-to guy during a three-game homestand during Fantasy Week 15 (Jan. 7-13). "It's a critical stretch here," MacTavish said. "It's not a reflection of the way Dwayne has played, it is a reflection that Matty has played. You want to give yourself the best chance. It is not a big difference between the two, but I really feel Matty is deserving of the opportunity." News: Edmonton's Mathieu Garon made 29 saves on 33 shots in regulation and overtime, before making four shootout saves in a win over Vancouver on Saturday. Garon has made 18 saves against 20 shots in shootouts in his career. Garon has assumed the starting job in everything but name. He's started six of Edmonton's last nine games, and he came on in relief 10 minutes into another. He's been sensational, while Dwayne Roloson has been hot and cold. "It's as much about how Mathieu as it is anything else," coach Craig MacTavish said. "He's given us some really incredible goaltending on the road. He's largely responsible for the run that we've been on on the road. He's playing great."
Analysis: "We are really confident in the shootout," Garon said. "It was a little harder and we had to wait for the end but we came through again." Garon became the father of a girl, Rosemary, on Friday. Garon is emerging as a decent No. 2 Fantasy goalie now, which makes the Oilers TG also a low-end No. 2 option. The coach isn't worried about hurt feelings on Roloson's part. "I don't worry about the mental makeup of either one," he said. "Firstly, you have to deal with it and secondly they have the experience. They're confident people so they're not going to be too rattled." Roloson is just a No. 3 Fantasy option now.

The Oilers TG is also a low-end Fantasy option.

Garon made 31 saves in regulation and survived all three shots he faced in the shootout, leading the Oilers to a 4-3 victory over the Kings on Monday night in his return to Staples Center. "I was just trying to be focused on the puck," Garon said. "Cammy surprised me a lot. I think he tried a new move. The other guys, they're so skilled that you never know what they're going to do. And for their part, they know me, too. So it's pretty even."
Analysis: Garon made his first start against his former teammates since signing a two-year contract with Edmonton as an unrestricted free agent July 3. He left because he didn't see much of a future for himself in Los Angeles behind Jason LaBarbera, whom he expected to get the bulk of the playing time after a spectacular season in the American Hockey League. Garon faced the Kings twice while with the Montreal Canadiens, both times at Los Angeles. He made 28 saves in a 2-1 loss on March 8, 2003, then beat them 4-2 on March 6, 2004 with 46 saves - which is still a career high. Garon and the Oilers TG is a decent low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 Fantasy option.
News: The Ducks were stymied Sunday by a 25-save effort by Edmonton goalie Mathieu Garon who earned his second shutout of the season and 12th of his career. "The defense (Sunday) was real good, the guys blocked a lot of shots and it was nice because they wanted to shoot from the point all the time," Garon said. "We always had a guy in front to block."
Analysis: Mathieu Garon has been better than Dwayne Roloson lately, so he will likely see most of the starts. Garon and the Oilers TG is a decent low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 Fantasy option.
News:Dwayne Roloson had 32 saves at Colorado Wednesday before being pulled after the second period. Roloson's teammates said he was the reason they weren't down by more than four goals, but the goaltender felt he could have played better. "I don't look at it that way," he said. "I look at the chances they got by me. I needed to keep us in the game." Mathieu Garon made seven saves in the third period after relieving Dwayne Roloson in a loss at Colorado Wednesday.
Analysis: Mathieu Garon had been the better guy in net recently, but if Roloson ever finds some rhythm, he will see most of the starts. Treat Roloson as a No. 3 Fantasy goalie until further notice. The Oilers TG is low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 Fantasy option.

Analysis: Garon had been solid in net for the Oilers up until some recent starts, which might leave the door open for Roloson to slide back into the picture. The goalie situation in Edmonton is a revolving door right now and Garon can't be trusted outside of a low-end Fantasy option. The same goes for the Oilers TG.
News:Mathieu Garon was able to beat the visiting Canucks Tuesday in a shootout. He allowed four goals in regulation, making 20 saves, before allowing just one goal in the shootout. Garon has taken the starting job away from Dwayne Roloson. He's started four of the last five games and is scheduled to start Thursday against Colorado.
Analysis: Garon is still a low-emd No. 2 Fantasy goalie. The Oilers TG is also a low-end No. 2 Fantasy option.

The goal broke Garon's shutout streak of 106 minutes, 42 seconds. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for Garon.
Analysis: Despite the loss, Garon has still been better in net as of late than Dwayne Roloson. Don't be surprised if the Oilers ride Garon until he starts to get cold. He is still nothing more than a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or someone worth using in leagues that use average points per game in a scoring period until he nets consistent starts. The Oilers TG is more of a low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 Fantasy option.
News:Mathieu Garon came up big in goal to lead the Edmonton Oilers to a 1-0 shootout win over the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday. Garon made 29 saves through overtime and stopped all three in the shootout to get the best of Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo, who matched him until the very end. Garon stopped Bryon Ritchie's deke, pokechecked Brendan Morrison and got a piece of Ryan Kesler's move to the backhand in the shootout.

He made 37 saves in a 4-2 win in Calgary on Saturday and was rewarded with consecutive starts for the first time since joining the Oilers this summer. Garon responded with another strong effort against the Canucks. Don't look now, but Dwayne Roloson's job might be in jeopardy.
News: Mathieu Garon's sixth game of the season was one to remember. In just his sixth appearance of the season, Garon made 37 saves to lead the Edmonton Oilers to a 4-2 win over Miikka Kiprusoff and the Calgary Flames on Saturday night. "I felt like he was ready to play and I like the way he has been playing and he played very well again," Edmonton coach Craig MacTavish said. "He made a couple real game-breaking saves."
Analysis: The Oilers have not used Garon as much as they would have liked, but that might be changing after Saturday's performance. He is still nothing more than a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or someone worth using in leagues that use average points per game in a scoring period. His lack of playing time obviously kills his Fantasy value. The Oilers TG is more of a low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 Fantasy option.

Analysis: Garon posted a 5-3 victory at home over the Philadelphia Flyers in the second game of the season, then got the hook in his second start after giving up three goals on 11 shots to the Vancouver Canucks. News: G Dwayne Roloson started Monday against Detroit, meaning Mathieu Garon should start Wednesday in Minnesota as head coach Craig MacTavish wants to get both his goalies comfortable.
Analysis: But Roloson used to play for Minnesota and will want to start against his old team, so he could play both games of the two-game road trip.
