Former Bolt Kubina Announces Retirement

News: Pavel Kubina announced his retirement from professional hockey Friday.
Analysis: Pavel Kubina spent 14 seasons in the NHL, 10 of those coming with the Lightning. He was able to top the 30-point plateau in seven of those seasons, including the 2003-04 campaign in which the Bolts claimed the Stanley Cup. He spent last season playing in the Swiss Elite League.

Former Flyer Kubina Elects To Play In Sweden

News: Pavel Kubina signed with Geneve-Servette of the Swiss League on Tuesday, the team's official website reports.
Analysis: Pavel Kubina, acquired by the Flyers at midseason from the Devils this past season, had been playing in his native Czech Republic prior to the work stoppage. Though he had several offers from interested NHL suitors, he decided it was best for him to remain in Europe rather than play a condensed schedule in North America. Expect him to surface in the NHL next season.

Ex-Flyer Kubina Inks Deal With Czech Team

News: Pavel Kubina has agreed to a contract HC Vitkovice in the Czech Extraliga, the Philadelphia Daily News reports.
Analysis: Pavel Kubina failed to generate any interest on the free agent market this offseason, so he could stay in the Czech Republic if NHL interest remains similarly tepid when the lockout ends. Kubina scored 15 points in 69 games last season, splitting time with the Flyers and Lightning.

Flyers' Kubina Set To Replace Bourdon In Lineup For Game 2

News: Pavel Kubina will take Marc-Andre Bourdon's place in the lineup for Game 2 against the Penguins, the Philadelphia Daily News reports.
Analysis: Pavel Kubina was scratched from Game 1, but appears primed to serve as Philly's fifth defender at the very least for Friday. If Bourdon's minutes from Game 1 are any indicator, expect Kubina to see around ten minutes of ice time in Game 2.

Kubina On Scoresheet For Flyers

News: Pavel Kubina posted an assist in Monday's loss to Tampa Bay, his first since missing several games with an upper-body injury.
Analysis: Pavel Kubina has three assists in 11 games since arriving from the same Lightning team Philadelphia fell to Monday. Look for the numbers to remain about the same for the season's final two weeks, as Kubina was acquired to bolster the team's defensive depth and his playoff experience.

Kubina Returns To The Ice For Flyers

News: Pavel Kubina saw 16 minutes of ice time in his return to the lineup Tuesday in the Flyers' 2-1 loss to Florida.
Analysis: Pavel Kubina missed two weeks with an upper body injury but now appears good to go as he skated 23 shifts and picked up 2 PIMs against the Panthers.

Kubina Active For Philadelphia

News: Pavel Kubina (upper body) will play against Florida on Tuesday, Philadelphia Daily News writer Frank Seravalli reporta.
Analysis: Pavel Kubina has only 11 points on the year, but he'll be there if you can use him Tuesday.

Kubina (Upper Body) Could Return To Philly Lineup Tuesday

News: Pavel Kubina (upper body) participated in the Flyers' morning skate Tuesday and could play against Florida later in the evening, Philly.com reports.
Analysis: Pavel Kubina has missed seven games due to the injury, though it appears his return is now imminent. Whether it's Tuesday or later in the week remains to be seen.

Flyers' Kubina Is Day-To-Day

News: Pavel Kubina is dealing with an upper body injury and is day-to-day, the Flyers' official Twitter page reports. He will not play Thursday against the Panthers.
Analysis: The news came from the mouth of Flyers GM Paul Holmgren. Pavel Kubina has recorded two points (assists) in his seven games since coming over from Tampa Bay. He only had 11 points (3G, 8A) in 52 games this year with the Lightning, so there's no reason to have Kubina in your fantasy lineup until he at least shows up in a box score.

Kubina Already Talking Extension With Flyers

News: Pavel Kubina is hoping to stay with the Flyers beyond this season, Philly.com.
Analysis: "I would like to stick around that is for sure," Pavel Kubina said. "It was always hard to play in this building and they have passionate fans and I am glad I can play for them now." While Kubina's sentiments are nice, it's likely a function of his age (34) and desire to win over a new team. The Flyers won't likely discuss any sort of contract extension until Kubina actually plays in a handful of games.

Philadelphia Trades For Kubina

News: Tampa Bay traded Pavel Kubina to Philadelphia on Saturday in exchange for a second- and fifth-round pick, Tampa Tribune writer Erik Erlendsson reports.
Analysis: Pavel Kubina's fantasy utility shouldn't change much in Philadelphia, and he's a sound addition who will boost the Flyers defense. The second-round pick is a conditional pick the Flyers acquired from the Panthers in the Kris Versteeg deal. The Panthers retain the right to make it either a 2012 or 2013 pick prior to the beginning of the second round of this year's draft.

Wings Make Offer To Bolts For Kubina?

News: The Red Wings appear to have made an offer for Pavel Kubina, reports The Macomb Daily. Details of the offer are not known.
Analysis: The paper, which serves the Detroit metropolitan area, cites an unnamed source close or with the team. The Wings have money to spend and while they maintain that they like the team they have, it is obvious they'd like to have someone on board who could push young Jakub Kindl who can too often be muscled off the puck. There is no word if Detroit is on Pavel Kubina's list of five teams that he was to have provided to the Bolts on Saturday.

Kubina To Provide Bolts With Five Teams For Possible Trade

News: Pavel Kubina (coach's decision) will provide the Lightning with a list of five teams for the team to pursue a potential trade by noon Saturday, reports Darren Dreger of TSN.ca.
Analysis: Pavel Kubina wants to stay in Tampa so we can't even begin to imagine what cities are on that list. We've even heard rumors that it could be populated with teams that would have zero interest in obtaining the steady defender. We doubt he'd be that childish so he could be on the move to a contender sooner rather than later. The specifics of the move would dictate any potential change in his value.

Lightning Sit Kubina

News: The Lightning are looking to deal Pavel Kubina, the Tampa Tribune reports. "In the interim, we've decided to protect our interest and keep Pavel off the ice until this situation is resolved," GM Steve Yzerman said of Kubina, who did not participate in Thursday morning's practice.
Analysis: Meanwhile, the team has asked Pavel Kubina, who presumably won't play Thursday against the Sharks, for a list of teams to which he is willing to be traded. In any case, a deal here is evidently likely to come sooner rather than later.

Bolts' Kubina: Five Points In Last Eight Games

News: Pavel Kubina has five points (two goals, three assists) in his last eight games, doubling what he had in his first 29 games.
Analysis: He isn't the fastest or nimblest guy and that makes it tough for him to play the current NHL game. But his increased ice time playing on the top D pairing in place of Mattias Ohlund appears to have renewed his confidence. And that shows in his output. He's a good waiver add in deep leagues and a must-play for those of you who have already socked him away on your roster.

Bolts' Kubina Warming Up

News: Pavel Kubina scored his third goal of the season in Tuesday's loss to Toronto.
Analysis: Loss aside, Pavel Kubina has re-found his scoring touch. He has points in four of his last five games (two goals, two assists) and is a worthy waiver pickup. Nab him quick.

Kubina Returns For Lightning

News: Pavel Kubina posted an assist in Monday's 5-4 loss to New Jersey after missing four games with a lower body injury.
Analysis: Pavel Kubina returned and fired a slick cross-ice pass for the Bolts' final goal to pull within one of New Jersey. Kubina played 16:14 in the loss with 2:09 on the power play. Use him as you normally would, but there isn't much upside left on the veteran.

Maple Leafs' Kubina Out Tuesday

News: Pavel Kubina (lower body) will not play in Tuesday's game against the Islanders, according to the Lightning's official Twitter page.
Analysis: Pavel Kubina has missed games the last two nights with the injury. The extent of his injury is not yet known, so consider him day-to-day for now.

Bolts' Kubina Out With Lower-Body Injury

News: Pavel Kubina missed Monday's game with a lower-body injury, reports the St. Petersburg Times.
Analysis: He apparently suffered the injury in the last minute of Saturday's game against the Rangers. He tried to practice Monday but left the ice shortly after the practice started. No word on the severity or duration of the absence.

Tampa's Kubina Nets First

News: Pavel Kubina scored his first goal of the season in Saturday's win over the Sabres. It stood up as the game-winner.
Analysis: He has a goal and an assist in eight games this season, a pace that will deliver him a mere 20 points this year. That could pick up a little over the season but not much -- he's settling into a crease-clearing role in his return to Tampa.

Kubina Continues Strong Play For Tampa

News: Pavel Kubina notched a power-play goal Saturday against the Panthers.
Analysis: OK, so it's the Floridian felines. But Pavel Kubina is already looking sharp. We don't think he'll get prime time power play minutes but he'll definitely get a bit. And that should give him some value in deeper formats.

Kubina: Two PP Points For Tampa

News: Pavel Kubina picked up two helpers, both of which came with the man advantage, in Friday's 5-2 win over Florida.
Analysis: He wasn't in coach Guy Boucher's top-two in terms of PP time on the back end, at least earlier this week, but he showed Friday that he still has the skills to deliver there should he be asked. His concussion appears to be a thing of the past; draft him if he fits your format.

Bolts' Kubina Wants Consistency In Head Shot Punishment

News: Pavel Kubina (concussion) is back in Tampa and ready for opening day of training camp but he's calling on the league to implement more consistent punishment on head shots, reports the St. Petersburg Times.
Analysis: "If you do it on purpose, it has to be the same for everybody," he said. "Sometimes you don't get anything, and sometimes there's a couple of games." He was knocked out of Game 1 of the Eastern semis on an unpenalized blow to the back of the head but had been suspended earlier in the season for what he said was an accidental elbow to Chicago's Dave Bolland. "If you hit somebody in the head, it doesn't matter if that person is injured or not. It has to be the same for everybody." He's clearly bitter. Let's hope he stays 100-percent healthy and takes that chip on his shoulder onto the ice.

Bolts' Kubina (Concussion) Cleared To Start Exercise

News: Kubina (concussion) has passed his base-line brain function tests and has been cleared to resume full workouts including skating, reports the St. Petersburg Times.
Analysis: He's going to return to his native Czech Republic on Monday and will start his workouts slowly -- a treadmill and stationary bike will be his first friends. It took four weeks for him to feel somewhat normal after the hit and at times, he couldn't even watch the Bolts' games from the media box because the sounds and lights were like a sensory explosion in his head. "I'll be good for training camp," Kubina said Friday, "for sure."
