Sharks' Hertl Ready For Playoffs

News: Tomas Hertl returned from injury for the final two games of the season.
Analysis: That's big for the Sharks and gives fantasy owners a nice dark horse for some playoff productivity. However, Tomas Hertl didn't do much in his first two games back -- he had no points and four shots in those games while playing more than 15 minutes per game. It's tough to know how he'll perform in his first playoff appearance, as Hertl's a rookie and has been out most of the season -- though he's certainly shown he has the potential to be an impact player.

Sharks' Hertl To Return Friday

News: Tomas Hertl (knee) will play in Friday's game against the Avalanche, CSN Bay Area reports.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl has been sidelined since Dec. 19, but he was medically cleared by two doctors to resume playing, and he will take the ice Friday night. Hertl's return should give a slumping Sharks offense a boost, as he tallied 15 goals and 10 assists in 35 games earlier this season.

Sharks' Hertl Could Return Over Weekend

News: Tomas Hertl (knee) could return to the lineup for one of the final two regular season games, Kevin Kurz of CSNBayArea.com reports.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl set the league abuzz in his third career game with a four-goal performance against the Rangers, and was viewed as the frontrunner for the Calder Trophy before suffering what was thought to be a season-ending knee injury in December. The 20-year-old has recovered faster than expected, resuming skating in late February and returning to practice last week. He'll need final medical approval before suiting up in any games over the weekend, but he's at least expected to be available for the start of the Sharks' playoff series next week with the Kings. While Hertl's extended absence may force him to settle for limited minutes initially upon returning, his return undoubtedly provides an offensive boost for San Jose.

Sharks' Hertl Ditches No Contact Jersey

News: Tomas Hertl practiced without his usual orange non-contact jersey Wednesday for the first time since suffering his knee injury, David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Head coach Todd McLellan said after practice that losing the non-contact jersey was one of several steps Tomas Hertl needs to complete before receiving clearance to return to the Sharks' lineup. Things would seem to be looking up for Hertl, but it still seems doubtful that he'll return this season.

Sharks' Hertl Not Close To Full Speed

News: Tomas Hertl (knee) has started to pick up the pace of his workouts, but is not skating at close to full speed yet, CSN Bay Area's Kevin Kurz reports.
Analysis: Coach Todd McLellan said the rookie forward's rehab is going well, but the team seems to be closing the door on him returning this season, as anticipated when he first suffered the injury. With several years of hockey still ahead of him, it's probably for the best for Tomas Hertl to take things slowly in his recovery in preparation for the 2014-15 season.

Hertl Skating Again For Sharks

News: Tomas Hertl was on the ice during Thursday's morning skate, reports Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl is still unlikely to return any time soon, but it's encouraging that he was in full gear and on the ice with the team. It was his first time skating since Dec. 19, and the rookie said he experienced no pain while doing so.

SJ's Hertl May Skate This Week

News: Tomas Hertl is with the team in Philadelphia and "may skate" Wednesday or Thursday, according to Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area.
Analysis: This does not change his status in any way. It remains extremely unlikely that Tomas Hertl will play again this season.

Sharks' Hertl In 'Infant Stages Of Rehab'

News: Coach Todd McLellan said Sunday that Tomas Hertl (knee) is in the "infant stages" of his rehab, CSN Bay Area's Kevin Kurz reports.
Analysis: The Sharks still haven't hashed out a timetable for Tomas Hertl, but he's not considered close to a return to the ice and it's more likely than not that his season is over. Despite the absence of the Calder Trophy frontrunner as well as another star forward in Logan Couture, the Sharks have reeled off a 13-4-0 record since losing Hertl in the Dec. 19 contest vs. the Kings.

Sharks' Hertl Could Miss 6-9 Months

News: A former NHL trainer familiar with Tomas Hertl's type of injury told CSNCalifornia.com that a best-case scenario for Hertl's return would be approximately 12 weeks, but he'll likely miss six-to-nine months.
Analysis: The trainer, who was not named in the report, has not treated Tomas Hertl and the Sharks haven't provided a timetable for his return, but it sounds like the 20-year-old is in danger of missing the rest of the season. Hertl underwent surgery to repair damage to the MCL and PCL ligaments in his right knee Tuesday. NHL team are not required to disclose injury information, so Hertl's official status may be in limbo for a while yet, but he likely won't be able to start weight-bearing exercises for six-to-eight weeks.

Sharks' Hertl Has MCL and PCL Repaired

News: Tomas Hertl underwent successful knee surgery Tuesday, according to Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area.
Analysis: Kurz notes that Tomas Hertl's MCL and PCL were repaired, adding that there was no damage to the forward's ACL. While the lack of ACL involvement is a bit of positive news, there is still no timetable for Hertl's return.

Sharks Officially Place Hertl On IR

News: Tomas Hertl has officially been placed on IR, with knee surgery scheduled for Tuesday, according to Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl is slated to miss significant time. Prior to the surgery there is no timetable for his return, but you can expect that it will definitely be after the Olympic break in February.

Sharks' Hertl To Have Knee Surgery Tuesday

News: Tomas Hertl will undergo knee surgery Tuesday, Brodie Brazil of CSN Bay Area reports.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl did not have a date set for his surgery but it has been determined to occur Tuesday. He is expected to miss multiple months following the surgery and that timetable is yet to be officially determined. Once the surgery has been performed, he can get on the track to rehab and recovery to return.

Sharks' Hertl Without Date For Surgery

News: No date has been set yet for Tomas Hertl's knee surgery, David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: While Tomas Hertl is still widely expected to miss multiple months with the knee injury, the Sharks are doing their due diligence in receiving multiple medical opinions before deciding what's best for their young forward. Expect the team to reach a resolution on the matter in the coming days.

Surgery On Tap For Sharks' Hertl

News: Tomas Hertl will undergo surgery on his injured knee, David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: The Sharks haven't previously shed much light on the extent of the rookie's injury besides confirming that he would miss a month of action, but surgery will extend his recovery timetable even further. It wouldn't be all that surprising if he was ruled out for the rest of the season, or at least a significant portion of the second half.

Sharks To Wait Before Re-Assessing Hertl's Injury

News: GM Doug Wilson said Tomas Hertl will undergo more tests over the next few days to determine the severity of his injury, Curtis Pashelka of the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: The Sharks have already confirmed that Tomas Hertl would miss at least a month with the knee injury, with a very distinct possibility the rookie could miss the rest of the season. GM Doug Wilson said the team expects to have more information regarding Hertl's injury in the next week or so, as doctors are waiting for the swelling on Hertl's knee to subside a bit so a proper prognosis can be given.

Sharks' Hertl Likely Out A Month Or Longer

News: Tomas Hertl could miss more than a month due to the knee injury suffered Thursday against the Kings, Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area reports.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl has cooled down some since his highlight-filled start to the 2013-14 campaign, but with 25 points in 35 games, his long-term absence still leaves a major scoring void for the Sharks and fantasy owners. The rookie's absence will force the Sharks to reshuffle their lineup and figure out what works best, so expect some fluidity in the top-six over the next few contests.

Sharks' Hertl Exits With Apparent Knee Injury

News: Tomas Hertl left Thursday's game against the Kings with an apparent knee injury, CSN Bay Area reports.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl took a knee-to-knee hit from the Kings' Dustin Brown, forcing the rookie out of Thursday's contest in the first period. No other information is currently available, but this will be a huge loss for the Sharks if Hertl ends up missing time beyond Thursday. He has 25 points (15 goals) through 35 appearance, though he's slowed down a bit lately, with just four points in his last 10 games.

Hertl Has Assist In Sharks' Win

News: Tomas Hertl had an assist and was plus-1 during his 13:44 of ice time in a win over St. Louis on Tuesday.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl has not regained the torrid scoring pace of early in the year, but he's got a respectable four points over the last seven games.

SJ's Hertl Has Assist In Disappointing Loss

News: Tomas Hertl had an assist in San Jose's disappointing loss to Carolina on Friday.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl didn't register a shot, which was a disappointing follow-up to his six-shot-and-a-goal outing the night before in Pittsburgh. Hertl is playing well and is picking up the pace after a slight slowdown in November. He's got five points over the last six games.

Sharks' Hertl Tallies 14th Goal

News: Tomas Hertl scored his 14th goal of the season Thursday -- the Sharks' lone tally in a loss to Pittsburgh.
Analysis: While Tomas Hertl is obviously in the midst of an excellent rookie campaign, he's cooled off significantly since mid-November, totaling just four points in his last eight games. However, those four points have all come in his last five contests, so he may be warming to the task again.

Sharks' Hertl Nets Two Points

News: Tomas Hertl had a goal and an assist, with a plus-2 rating and 13:12 on ice in a win over St. Louis on Friday.
Analysis: It'd been four games since Tomas Hertl's last goal, which might worry some owners as it's his second prolonged drought of the season and you're mainly looking for goals from Hertl. Nonetheless, he's got three points in his last two games and with 13 goals on the season is ranked 7th overall in the NHL.

Sharks' Hertl Scores 11th Goal

News: Tomas Hertl scored the Sharks' lone regulation goal Thursday, notching his 11th of the year in the third period of an overtime win against Vancouver.
Analysis: After a stretch of cold play, Tomas Hertl's picked things up again, totaling six points in his last five games as he continues to thrive in his rookie campaign.

Five Points In Three Games For Sharks' Hertl

News: Tomas Hertl had a goal and an assist in the Sharks' shootout loss to the Jets Sunday.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl has five points in the last three games. Maybe that six-game stretch with a single goal was just situational, as Hertl is putting points up again and stands to benefit from the stability and offensive boost that comes with the eventual return of Brent Burns.

Sharks' Hertl Nabs Another Point

News: Tomas Hertl had an assist in an otherwise disappointing Thursday night for fantasy owners. He finished without a shot, was minus-1, and had only 15:41 of ice time.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl seemed to fall back to earth after his impressive start to the season. However, he appears to have rebounded after putting up only one point over seven games. He's got three points in the last two games.

Sharks' Hertl Grabs Two Points

News: Tomas Hertl scored a goal and added an assist Tuesday in a shootout loss to the Sabres.
Analysis: The pickings have been slim for Tomas Hertl since his ultra-hot start to the year; he'd picked up just one point (a goal) in his prior six games entering Tuesday's action. He seems to have become a fixture in the San Jose top six, so he'll keep seeing opportunities, but don't expect fantasy stardom so soon.
