Sharks' Hertl Fine After Knee Scare

News: Tomas Hertl said the tenderness in his knee that he first experienced in Tuesday's practice isn't anything to worry about, David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl said that he only felt the sensation in his knee because he had been off the ice for more than a month. He'll likely take the next couple days off to rest before continuing his offseason workouts again.

Sharks' Hertl Tweaks Knee While Practicing

News: Tomas Hertl tweaked his knee during a practice Tuesday and will likely sit out the Sharks' second annual Prospects Summer Scrimmage on Wednesday, David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Any news involving Tomas Hertl's knee immediately raises attention given that he missed several months of his rookie season due to MCL and PCL injuries that required surgery, but this particular ailment isn't anything to panic about yet. The Sharks seem optimistic Hertl will need only a couple days off the ice to heal up, but more information should come available if the injury is revealed to be more than a day-to-day concern.

Sharks' Hertl Scores Second Goal At Worlds

News: Tomas Hertl scored late in the third during a Czech Republic loss to Team Canada at the World Championships on Monday.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl has two goals and two assists through the first three games of the World Championships.

Sharks' Hertl Scoring At World Championships

News: Over the Czech Republic's first two games at the World Championships, Tomas Hertl has a goal and two assists, while averaging just under 15 minutes of ice time.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl has had an instant impact on the Czech team, scoring just eight seconds into the team's second game, which the Czechs lost to Sweden in a shootout. This experience should prove invaluable to Hertl in the coming NHL season.

Sharks' Hertl Added To Czech National Team

News: The Czech Republic Men's National Team announced Tuesday that Tomas Hertl will be joining the team for the 2014 IIHF Men's World Championship.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl had an impressive season, tallying 15 goals and 10 assists in 37 regular season games. This will be good experience for the young forward who has a very bright future. Maybe if they win he can treat the team to a night a Dave And Busters.

Hertl, Sharks Fall In Game 7

News: Tomas Hertl had an assist and three shots, but that wasn't enough as the Sharks lost to the Kings in Wednesday's Game 7 match.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl is one of the bright spots in a disappointing season for San Jose. Though his season was cut short, he finishes as one of the two most exciting rookies to emerge this year, tallying 15 goals and 10 assists in 37 regular season games. He's a natural goal scorer, but beware of an inflated value in 2014-15 drafts. He didn't play a full season, had slumps, and will be entering a sophomore campaign which can often find forwards regressing.

Hertl Has Assist In San Jose Loss

News: Tomas Hertl had an assist and a pair of shots in Thursday's loss to the Kings.
Analysis: Through four postseason games Tomas Hertl has two goals and two assists. He's fully bounced back from injury and is making the case that he could have been a Calder finalist if it hadn't been for his midseason injury.

Hertl Scores Second Postseason Goal For Sharks

News: Tomas Hertl had a goal and six shots in a Game 3 win over LA.
Analysis: Questions about whether Tomas Hertl can bounce back after his injury? Those have been squashed. The rookie has two goals and an assist through three playoff games.

Hertl Moves Back To Sharks' Top Line

News: Tomas Hertl had one shot and one hit through 15 minutes of ice time in Sunday's Game 2 win over the Kings.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl didn't have much of an impact on the scoresheet in Game 2. In fact, he was of only five players on the team who didn't record a point in the 7-2 win. However, it's worth noting that coach Todd McLellan rejiggered the lines in the second period, placing Hertl on Joe Thornton's top line, where he had thrived early in the season before his injury. With Joe Pavelski back on the third line, the Kings won't be able to focus on shutting down the first line, so things may open up for Hertl.

Sharks' Hertl Notches Two Points In Playoff Debut

News: Tomas Hertl scored a goal and added an assist Thursday against the Kings in his first-ever NHL playoff game. He went minus-1 and put five shots on goal.
Analysis: A heck of a debut for Tomas Hertl, who skated just 12:15 in the contest. If he keeps going like this, he's going to have to be bumped up into the top six, and soon.

Sharks' Hertl Ready For Playoffs

News: Tomas Hertl returned from injury for the final two games of the season.
Analysis: That's big for the Sharks and gives fantasy owners a nice dark horse for some playoff productivity. However, Tomas Hertl didn't do much in his first two games back -- he had no points and four shots in those games while playing more than 15 minutes per game. It's tough to know how he'll perform in his first playoff appearance, as Hertl's a rookie and has been out most of the season -- though he's certainly shown he has the potential to be an impact player.

Sharks' Hertl To Return Friday

News: Tomas Hertl (knee) will play in Friday's game against the Avalanche, CSN Bay Area reports.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl has been sidelined since Dec. 19, but he was medically cleared by two doctors to resume playing, and he will take the ice Friday night. Hertl's return should give a slumping Sharks offense a boost, as he tallied 15 goals and 10 assists in 35 games earlier this season.

Sharks' Hertl Could Return Over Weekend

News: Tomas Hertl (knee) could return to the lineup for one of the final two regular season games, Kevin Kurz of CSNBayArea.com reports.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl set the league abuzz in his third career game with a four-goal performance against the Rangers, and was viewed as the frontrunner for the Calder Trophy before suffering what was thought to be a season-ending knee injury in December. The 20-year-old has recovered faster than expected, resuming skating in late February and returning to practice last week. He'll need final medical approval before suiting up in any games over the weekend, but he's at least expected to be available for the start of the Sharks' playoff series next week with the Kings. While Hertl's extended absence may force him to settle for limited minutes initially upon returning, his return undoubtedly provides an offensive boost for San Jose.

Sharks' Hertl Ditches No Contact Jersey

News: Tomas Hertl practiced without his usual orange non-contact jersey Wednesday for the first time since suffering his knee injury, David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Head coach Todd McLellan said after practice that losing the non-contact jersey was one of several steps Tomas Hertl needs to complete before receiving clearance to return to the Sharks' lineup. Things would seem to be looking up for Hertl, but it still seems doubtful that he'll return this season.

Sharks' Hertl Not Close To Full Speed

News: Tomas Hertl (knee) has started to pick up the pace of his workouts, but is not skating at close to full speed yet, CSN Bay Area's Kevin Kurz reports.
Analysis: Coach Todd McLellan said the rookie forward's rehab is going well, but the team seems to be closing the door on him returning this season, as anticipated when he first suffered the injury. With several years of hockey still ahead of him, it's probably for the best for Tomas Hertl to take things slowly in his recovery in preparation for the 2014-15 season.

Hertl Skating Again For Sharks

News: Tomas Hertl was on the ice during Thursday's morning skate, reports Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl is still unlikely to return any time soon, but it's encouraging that he was in full gear and on the ice with the team. It was his first time skating since Dec. 19, and the rookie said he experienced no pain while doing so.

SJ's Hertl May Skate This Week

News: Tomas Hertl is with the team in Philadelphia and "may skate" Wednesday or Thursday, according to Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area.
Analysis: This does not change his status in any way. It remains extremely unlikely that Tomas Hertl will play again this season.

Sharks' Hertl In 'Infant Stages Of Rehab'

News: Coach Todd McLellan said Sunday that Tomas Hertl (knee) is in the "infant stages" of his rehab, CSN Bay Area's Kevin Kurz reports.
Analysis: The Sharks still haven't hashed out a timetable for Tomas Hertl, but he's not considered close to a return to the ice and it's more likely than not that his season is over. Despite the absence of the Calder Trophy frontrunner as well as another star forward in Logan Couture, the Sharks have reeled off a 13-4-0 record since losing Hertl in the Dec. 19 contest vs. the Kings.

Sharks' Hertl Could Miss 6-9 Months

News: A former NHL trainer familiar with Tomas Hertl's type of injury told CSNCalifornia.com that a best-case scenario for Hertl's return would be approximately 12 weeks, but he'll likely miss six-to-nine months.
Analysis: The trainer, who was not named in the report, has not treated Tomas Hertl and the Sharks haven't provided a timetable for his return, but it sounds like the 20-year-old is in danger of missing the rest of the season. Hertl underwent surgery to repair damage to the MCL and PCL ligaments in his right knee Tuesday. NHL team are not required to disclose injury information, so Hertl's official status may be in limbo for a while yet, but he likely won't be able to start weight-bearing exercises for six-to-eight weeks.

Sharks' Hertl Has MCL and PCL Repaired

News: Tomas Hertl underwent successful knee surgery Tuesday, according to Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area.
Analysis: Kurz notes that Tomas Hertl's MCL and PCL were repaired, adding that there was no damage to the forward's ACL. While the lack of ACL involvement is a bit of positive news, there is still no timetable for Hertl's return.

Sharks Officially Place Hertl On IR

News: Tomas Hertl has officially been placed on IR, with knee surgery scheduled for Tuesday, according to Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl is slated to miss significant time. Prior to the surgery there is no timetable for his return, but you can expect that it will definitely be after the Olympic break in February.

Sharks' Hertl To Have Knee Surgery Tuesday

News: Tomas Hertl will undergo knee surgery Tuesday, Brodie Brazil of CSN Bay Area reports.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl did not have a date set for his surgery but it has been determined to occur Tuesday. He is expected to miss multiple months following the surgery and that timetable is yet to be officially determined. Once the surgery has been performed, he can get on the track to rehab and recovery to return.

Sharks' Hertl Without Date For Surgery

News: No date has been set yet for Tomas Hertl's knee surgery, David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: While Tomas Hertl is still widely expected to miss multiple months with the knee injury, the Sharks are doing their due diligence in receiving multiple medical opinions before deciding what's best for their young forward. Expect the team to reach a resolution on the matter in the coming days.

Surgery On Tap For Sharks' Hertl

News: Tomas Hertl will undergo surgery on his injured knee, David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: The Sharks haven't previously shed much light on the extent of the rookie's injury besides confirming that he would miss a month of action, but surgery will extend his recovery timetable even further. It wouldn't be all that surprising if he was ruled out for the rest of the season, or at least a significant portion of the second half.

Sharks To Wait Before Re-Assessing Hertl's Injury

News: GM Doug Wilson said Tomas Hertl will undergo more tests over the next few days to determine the severity of his injury, Curtis Pashelka of the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: The Sharks have already confirmed that Tomas Hertl would miss at least a month with the knee injury, with a very distinct possibility the rookie could miss the rest of the season. GM Doug Wilson said the team expects to have more information regarding Hertl's injury in the next week or so, as doctors are waiting for the swelling on Hertl's knee to subside a bit so a proper prognosis can be given.
