Sharks' Hertl Returns To Lineup

News: Though Tomas Hertl appeared to be ruled out for Monday's game against the Stars with an illness, he ended up suiting up during the contest, logging 10:29 on the night.
Analysis: The Sharks reversed course and ended up skating Tomas Hertl on Monday, but appeared to limit his involvement. His TOI was more than four minutes lower than his average for the season, and he finished with just one shot attempt on the night. Expect Hertl's ice time to climb a bit in the final two games now that he's further removed from the illness.s

Sharks' Hertl Under The Weather

News: Tomas Hertl (illness) won't play Monday against the Stars, Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area reports.
Analysis: With Tomas Hertl -- who has notched 31 points in 79 games -- out Monday, the Sharks have bolstered their depth up front by recalling Bryan Lerg.

Hertl Helps Sharks Hurdle Preds

News: Tomas Hertl snapped out of his slump Thursday, picking up a goal on the power play and an empty-net assist (also on the man advantage) in a 2-0 win over Nashville.
Analysis: He was the lone man to beat either goalie in this game. Tomas Hertl had totaled just a lonely assist in his prior seven games, so this is nice for those who've held onto him during his sophomore slump. The two points pushed him off a tie with last year's total of 25 -- but he's played 31 more games this season.

Hertl Leads Sharks In Shots In Shootout Win

News: Tomas Hertl landed five shots on net in Monday's shootout win over the Penguins, but failed to get one past goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury.
Analysis: While he didn't get anything on the board, seeing an offensive outburst like that from the young forward is a good sign. He has not delivered on the promise of last year's truncated season, where he posted 15 goals in 37 games. This year he has just 10 goals through 67 games. Part of that has been a reduction in the number of shots he's taking. He averaged 2.65 shots per game last year and is down to 1.70 per game this year. That and a reduced shooting percentage are contributing to a slow year in his sophomore campaign.

SJ's Hertl Stays At Wing, Adds Assist In Win

News: Tomas Hertl had an assist, a plus-2 rating, and three shots in Monday's shutout win over the Canadiens.
Analysis: When the team shipped James Sheppard out at the trade deadline, GM Doug Wilson said it was because they wanted to get Tomas Hertl more time at center. He played wing on Monday night. But that doesn't mean the move couldn't still happen. It's not entirely clear how that move would effect his value. But a change like that merits monitoring by all Hertl owners.

Sharks' Hertl Could See More Time As Center

News: Tomas Hertl may get more playing time as a center, after the Sharks traded James Sheppard to the Rangers on Sunday, David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Whether he plays left wing or center, Tomas Hertl will likely still skate on the third line. It's not entirely clear what the team plans to do, as Sharks general manager Doug Wilson merely said that the recent trade will allow the team to develop Hertl as a center. That doesn't necessarily mean Hertl will start playing center immediately.

Hertl's Two Assists Help Sharks Hurdle Stars

News: Tomas Hertl notched a pair of helpers and went plus-2 Thursday in a win over Dallas.
Analysis: He assisted on two Andrew Desjardins goals early in the second period to make the game 3-0, and that third goal ended up standing as the game-winner. Unfortunately, Tomas Hertl had gone five straight without registering on the scoresheet in what's been a highly inconsistent 2014-15 campaign.

Sharks' Hertl Scores Twice In Loss

News: Tomas Hertl scored a pair of goals and had an assist in Saturday's loss to the Hurricanes.
Analysis: The points were Tomas Hertl's first in five games, and the 21-year-old now has 10 goals and 22 points in 54 games. Hertl's fantasy value is currently limited due to his third-line role. He has gushing potential, though, so if he gets bumped up a line, it wouldn't hurt to give Hertl a look on the waiver wire. The talent is definitely there.

Hertl Posts Two Helpers For Sharks

News: Tomas Hertl rattled off a pair of assists and went plus-1 Thursday in a win over the Ducks.
Analysis: This represents his first multi-point game in very nearly two months, dating all the way back to Dec. 4. In the 21 games between these two-point efforts, he collected just two goals and two assists. All in all, this year so far has been a far cry from last season's explosion onto the NHL scene for Tomas Hertl, who's seen his shooting rate percentage plummet despite a relatively modest drop in ice time.

Hertl Back With Sharks

News: The Sharks recalled Tomas Hertl from AHL Worcester on Tuesday.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl, who recorded two assists in two games during his stint with Worcester, returns to the Sharks following the NHL All-Star break with 17 points in 48 games with the big club to his credit this season.

Sharks Send Hertl To AHL

News: The Sharks have assigned Tomas Hertl to AHL Worcester, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl, who has notched eight goals and nine assists in 48 games for the Sharks this season, will see some AHL ice time during the NHL All-Star break, with a recall presumably on tap once the Sharks resume practice this coming Tuesday.

SJ's Hertl Ends Slump With Goal In Win

News: Tomas Hertl had a goal and a plus-1 rating in Tuesday's win over the Coyotes.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl's playing time has been cut a lot since the start of the season. He played just 11:44 on Tuesday, but was able to end an 11-game scoring slump. His eight goals on the season are a disappointment to many who predicted that he would carry on the productivity from his rookie season.

Sharks' Hertl (Face) Questionable For Tuesday

News: Tomas Hertl is dealing with a facial injury and is questionable to play Tuesday against the Wild, Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area reports.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl took an errant puck to the face while sitting on the bench during the third period of Monday's win over the Jets, resulting in him leaving the game with his face a bloody mess. The Sharks' medical staff stitched him up and he looks to have avoided a long absence, but Hertl still may be forced to sit Wednesday just to be on the safe side. His status likely won't be officially known until pregame warmups.

Sharks' Hertl (Face) Probable For Tuesday

News: Coach Todd McLellan said Tomas Hertl (face) is expected to play Tuesday against the Wild, Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area reports.
Analysis: Unless Tomas Hertl reports any discomfort with his face mask prior to pregame warmups, it looks like he'll be cleared to play a day after taking a puck to his mug, which required 17 stitches. The 21-year-old has just one point over his last eight games and is expected to play on the Sharks' third line.

SJ's Hertl Ends Slump

News: Tomas Hertl had an assist in Saturday's 7-2 loss to St. Louis, snapping a six-game streak without a point.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl has struggled recently. He's got just one goal and one assist in the last 12 games. It's nice to see him get on the board, but it came in a game where he only played 12:18 and didn't register a shot. The rough patch isn't necessarily in the rearview mirror yet.

Sharks' Hertl Scores Game-Winner Saturday

News: Tomas Hertl scored the game-winning goal in Saturday's win over the Predators.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl now has seven goals and 14 points in 32 games, putting him on pace for a career-high 17-goal season. While he hasn't been a top scorer this season, Hertl has delivered in the clutch with three-game-winning goals. Skating on the top line, Hertl is a decent option in deeper leagues, but he's been too inconsistent to warrant a look in most shallower formats.

Sharks' Hertl Gets Two Points In 7-4 Win

News: Tomas Hertl notched a goal and assist in Thursday's 7-4 win over the Bruins.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl's goal, his sixth of the season, was the final tally on a night the Sharks tore up the Boston defense. His assist during 5-on-4 play in the second period marked his third power-play point of 2014-15.

Sharks' Hertl Notches Goal

News: Tomas Hertl scored a goal in 16:34 worth of ice time in Sunday's 2-0 win over the Hurricanes.
Analysis: The goal was his fourth of the year and snapped a six game goalless streak. Tomas Hertl has been improving of late, as he now has six points in November after recording just three in the season's opening month and he's well on his way to surpassing last season's 25 point effort.

Sharks' Hertl Dishes Out Two Helpers

News: Tomas Hertl dished out a pair of helpers in Saturday's win over Dallas.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl had gone quiet recently, but now has a three-game point streak. Currently skating on the third line, the youngster's fantasy value is limited due to his bottom-six role. He still has has seven points (three goals) in 15 games, however, meaning he should easily surpass the 37 points (15 goals) he recorded in his injury-riddled 2013-14 rookie campaign.

Sharks' Hertl Snaps Drought With Goal

News: Tomas Hertl scored a power-play goal in Saturday's 3-1 win over the Sharks.
Analysis: Dropped to the fourth line Saturday, Tomas Hertl was able to restore some faith from the Sharks by notching his first goal since Oct. 16. Hertl was otherwise quiet on the night with no shots on goal in his 9:30 of ice time at even strength, so there's not much of an incentive for the Sharks to rush him back to a top-six role just yet. He'll probably need to post multiple quality outings in a row on the checking line before the Sharks can justify an increase in his ice time.

Sharks' Hertl Will Play Saturday

News: Tomas Hertl will be in the lineup Saturday against the Islanders, likely as a member of the Sharks' fourth line, Kevin Kurz of CSNBayArea.com reports.
Analysis: While Tomas Hertl will avoid being a healthy scratch for the contest, it's apparent that his stock is on the downturn. The 20-year-old has been held to three points on just 13 shot attempts over the Sharks' first 12 games. He'll probably need to play better in more limited minutes before warranting a return to one of the top two lines.

Sharks' Hertl Could Be Healthy Scratch Saturday

News: Tomas Hertl was skating with the Sharks' fourth liners at Saturday's morning session and could be a healthy scratch later in the evening against the Islanders, Kevin Kurz of CSNBayArea.com reports.
Analysis: Despite opening the season on fertile ground in a top-six role, Tomas Hertl has mustered only three points in 12 games, including just one in his last eight. There's no doubting the talents of the Czech winger, but it might not be worthwhile to hold on to him in most leagues until he starts producing like he did as a rookie.

Sharks Drop Hertl To Third Line

News: Tomas Hertl will play on the Sharks' third line with James Sheppard and Andrew Desjardins on Tuesday versus the Bruins, David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: After the Sharks were shut out by the Rangers over the weekend, coach Todd McLellan has decided to tinker with all four of his lines in an attempt to spark some offense. With two points (both goals) and seven shots on goal over six games, Tomas Hertl hasn't done much to take advantage of his prime position on the top line with Joe Pavelski and Joe Thornton. Joining inferior offensive talents in Desjardins and Sheppard probably won't help Hertl rediscover the scoring touch he showed as a rookie.

Sharks' Hertl Nabs Goal In Win

News: Tomas Hertl potted a goal in Saturday's 3-0 win over the Jets.
Analysis: Tomas Hertl's tally gave the Sharks a two-goal lead just five minutes in the game, with the young Czech forward using his considerable burst to track down a Joe Thornton pass and then burying the puck past goalie Ondrej Pavelec. The 20-year-old was arguably running neck-and-neck with the Avs' Nathan MacKinnon for the Calder Trophy last season before suffering a long-term knee injury in December, so 50 to 60 points could be a realistic expectation if he's able to log a full season of action.

Sharks' Hertl Slated To Serve As Third-Line LW

News: Tomas Hertl is set to assume a top-line role at left wing to begin the season, Kevin Kurz of CSNBayArea.com reports.
Analysis: After his brilliant rookie season was interrupted by a knee injury, Tomas Hertl will face high expectations regarding what he may be capable of producing during a campaign in which he stays healthy. His point total of 15 goals and 10 assists over 37 games as a rookie would prorate to 33 and 22, respectively, over an 82-game schedule. And if he does in fact stick on the line next to Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski throughout the season, the scoring upside could be even greater than 55 points.
