Koekkoek: No-Contact At Bolts' Prospect Camp

News: Slater Koekkoek (shoulder) is at Tampa Bay's development camp this week, but is under no-contact status to protect his surgically repaired shoulders, reports the Tampa Bay Times.
Analysis: His development is behind after having three season-ending shoulder surgeries over the last three years. But Bolts director of player development Stacy Roest described him "as the best defenseman in the OHL" when he was playing last season. It's likely he'll be at Syracuse of the AHL next season, but he'll be a stalwart on the Bolts' blue line for a decade -- or more -- once he arrives in the NHL.

Bolts' Koekkoek: Successful Shoulder Surgery

News: Slater Koekkoek has undergone season-ending surgery on his right shoulder, but will be ready for training camp in September, reports the Tampa Tribune. "In listening to the doctors, there's no reason Slater can't go on to have a good, long, healthy career," Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman said of the big defender who has now undergone three shoulder surgeries.
Analysis: The previous two procedures were to his other shoulder and the 20-year-old's growth as a prospect has been stunted so far. Yzerman remains optimistic about the young man's future: "We think he's a good, young prospect still with a lot of developing to do, but we think he will do that." His potential remains -- he had 15 goals and 53 points and was plus-44 in 62 games for the Windsor Spitfires.

Lightning's Koekkoek Suffers Season-Ending Injury

News: Slater Koekkoek has suffered a season-ending shoulder injury and will require surgery, the Windsor Star's Jim Parker reports.
Analysis: The good news is that Slater Koekkoek hurt his right shoulder, after undergoing a pair of procedures on the other shoulder over the last couple of years. He's still a promising prospect, but the injury issues are becoming harder and harder to ignore, even though he just turned 20 in February. An attack-minded defenseman, Koekkoek had 15 goals and 38 assists in 62 games for AHL Windsor this season.

Bolts Send Koekkoek To Juniors

News: Slater Koekkoek (shoulder) has been reassigned to Windsor of the Ontario Hockey League. He was the Lightning's 10th overall pick in 2012.
Analysis: His development has been slowed by shoulder issues, but he's healthy and should benefit playing inside a strong Spitfires' system. His upside remains high and he could find himself donning the maple leaf for Team Canada at the 2014 World Junior Championship.

Bolts' Koekkoek (Shoulder): Ready By Training Camp

News: Slater Koekkoek (shoulder) sat out the Lightning's recent prospect camp, but should be ready for training camp, reports the Tampa Bay Times. The Lightning hope he can develop into a top-two defenseman.
Analysis: He underwent a surgery called the Latarjet procedure where -- according to the Times -- "the coracoid bone of the shoulder blade is twisted slightly into a position where, with the help of a titanium screw, it anchors the shoulder in its socket." The procedure permanently limits the range of motion of the shoulder, but not in a way that affects function. And it should solve the issues he had with the torn labrum and dislocation. He will play for Windsor of the OHL in 2013-14.

Bolts Ink Koekkoek

News: The Lightning signed Slater Koekkoek (shoulder) to a three-year, entry level deal Wednesday.
Analysis: The Bolts chose the defenseman with the 10th overall pick in the 2012 NHL entry draft, but he's probably at least another year away from having an impact in the NHL. Slater Koekkoek registered six goals and 23 assists in 42 games in the OHL this season, before having season-ending shoulder surgery in January.

Lightning Prospect Koekkoek Shut Down For The Season

News: Slater Koekkoek will require a second shoulder surgery that will keep him out four to six months, ending his season, the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: The team's top pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Slater Koekkoek had been plying his trade at the junior level, scoring 28 points over 40 games. Koekkoek's earlier surgery failed to properly heal the injured shoulder, prompting a second procedure and costing the prospect half a season of development.
