Pens' Maatta Limited As Camp Opens

News: Olli Maatta will take limited contact at Thursday's practice.
Analysis: The Penguins won't let Olli Maatta go full bore right away as he continues to recover from surgery, but the fact that he's on the ice suggests his recovery is going swimmingly. Once thought to be at risk of missing the start of the season, Maatta appears more likely than not to be in the lineup for the Penguins' Oct. 9 opener against the Ducks.

Pens' Maatta To Receive Update Later In Week

News: Olli Maatta could be cleared for physical contact Wednesday or Thursday, Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: Olli Maatta was ruled out for four-to-six months after undergoing shoulder surgery in May, but there seems to be legitimate optimism that he might beat that timetable and be ready to go for the start of training camp. Even if that materializes, expect the Penguins to limit Maatta's involvement in the early going, with the hope of preparing him for a full slate of minutes for the regular-season opener. The 20-year-old flashed a ton of potential as a rookie last season, accruing nine goals and 20 assists over 78 games.

Pens' Maatta Out 4-6 Months Following Surgery

News: Thursday's shoulder procedure will keep Olli Maatta out for four-to-six months, Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: Although there was no indication beforehand that Olli Maatta's surgery was a long-term concern, the timetable almost certainly rules him out for training camp, and could cost him the first few weeks of the regular season. The injury shouldn't dampen the 19-year-old's value too much in dynasty leagues, but his uncertain health heading into the 2014-15 campaign may knock him down a peg in single-season formats.

Pens' Maatta To Undergo Shoulder Surgery

News: Olli Maatta will undergo shoulder surgery Thursday, Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: The Penguins haven't released an official timetable for Olli Maatta's return, but the expectation is that it won't delay his participation in training camp. Maatta sputtered a bit down the stretch for the Penguins, but was still one of the better-performing fantasy defensemen as a rookie, accumulating nine goals and 20 assists over 78 regular-season contests.

Penguins' Maatta Takes Warmups On Sunday

News: Olli Maatta (undisclosed) was on the ice for warmups in advance of Sunday's Game 6 against the Rangers.
Analysis: Olli Maatta missed Sunday's morning skate, but based on warmups it looks like he'll remain in the Penguins' lineup Sunday. Maatta checks in with two assists in 11 playoffs games to date.

Maatta Not At Morning Skate Sunday

News: Olli Maatta missed Sunday's morning skate, Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Olli Maatta saw his normal amount of ice time in Game 5 and the reason for his absence is unknown at this point. The 19-year-old rookie has had a good postseason, tallying two points in 11 games and recording a plus-1 goal differential. His status for Game 6 should become clearer when the team takes the ice for warmups.

Pens' Maatta Will Play Wednesday

News: Olli Maatta (upper body) will return to the lineup Wednesday, Pens Inside Scoop reports.
Analysis: Olli Maatta sat out the team's last two games, but will suit up Wednesday to take on the Red Wings. He'll be paired with Matt Niskanen to make up the team's second defensive pairing and skate at one of the points on Pittsburgh's No. 2 power-play unit.

Penguins' Maatta Still Sidelined

News: Olli Maatta (upper body) will not play Sunday against the Avs.
Analysis: The report suggests that Olli Maatta's injury is not expected to be a long-term issue, so we'll consider him day-to-day as Wednesday's game against the Red Wings approaches.

Pens' Maatta Out Saturday

News: Penguins' Olli Maatta will not play in Saturday's game against the Wild due to an unspecified injury, the Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: Nothing was previously reported, but the Pens are headed for the No. 2 seed and can afford to be cautious. Olli Maatta is likely just day-to-day, and an update should be available either after Saturday's game or Sunday.

Pens' Maatta A Healthy Scratch On Friday

News: Olli Maatta will serve as a healthy scratch Friday, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: The rookie defenseman has looked a step slow on the ice in recent weeks. Most likely, Olli Maatta will return to the lineup in Pittsburgh's next game Sunday against the Blackhawks. With Maatta out, Simon Despres will likely step up into the lineup from his tyical seventh defenseman role.

Penguins' Maatta A Healthy Scratch Friday

News: Olli Maatta will be a healthy scratch for Friday's game against the Blue Jackets, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Olli Maatta hasn't been playing particularly well, but the scratch still comes as a surprise. While he'll likely return to the lineup within the next few games, the situations bears watching. With Maatta out, Simon Despres will likely step up to the lineup from the seventh defenseman role.

Pens' Maatta Cooling Off

News: Olli Maatta's spectacular play has fallen off in recent games, illustrated by a six-game pointless streak.
Analysis: The Penguins are using Olli Maatta as a No. 1 defenseman and his consistency has slipped. His breakdown led to a late Lightning goal Saturday afternoon. There's no denying the 19-year-old's talent, but from a fantasy perspective he's fallen off.

Pens' Maatta Scores Twice In Loss

News: Olli Maatta contributed a pair of goals -- one on the power play -- in Thursday's 5-3 loss to San Jose.
Analysis: While this was a tough one for the Pens, Olli Maatta now has six points in his last five games on the strength of a trio of two-point performances. He's seeing major minutes thanks to the Pens' banged-up blue line and should be approaching universal ownership, considering the offensive upside he's displaying.

Pens' Maatta Plays Big Thursday

News: Olli Maatta potted a power-play goal and added an assist Thursday in a shootout loss to the Canadiens.
Analysis: He saw the second-most ice time among Pittsburgh blueliners (21:41), illustrating just how much the Penguins value the 19-year-old. Olli Maatta now has 11 points (four goals, seven assists) in his last 12 games.

Increased Role For Pens' Maatta?

News: Olli Maatta, who scored three goals and five points in six games for Team Finland in Sochi, will be asked to take on an ever-increasing role for Pittsburgh coming out of the Olympic break.
Analysis: Olli Maatta has already scored six goals and 23 points in 57 contests as a 19-year-old rookie. With both Kris Letang (stroke) and Paul Martin (hand) out for at least a month, Pittsburgh will need Maatta to lug the puck out of its own end. The team might also ask Maatta to see spot duty on the No. 2 power play. So far, he's risen to every challenge, though it wouldn't be shocking to see him wear down a bit mentally after playing beyond his years thus far.

Pens' Maatta Takes High Stick Sunday

News: Olli Maatta took a high stick to the face from Rick Nash during Sunday's game against Team Canada and was helped off to the locker room, Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun Times reports.
Analysis: The penalty occurred towards the tail-end of the first period, so there is no word as to whether or not he'll be back out for the second period. There was no blood visible, so the outlook is at least promising.

Penguins' Maatta With Three Points Friday

News: Olli Maatta scored a goal and added two assists in Friday's win for Finland over Norway.
Analysis: Olli Maatta assisted on both of Lauri Korpikoski's goals in the game and later capped the rout with his second goal of the tournament. He should continue to provide Finland with solid offensive output from his defensive position.

Pens' Maatta Moves Into Bigger Role Friday

News: Olli Maatta potted his first career power-play goal and set up James Neal's game-tying score with a no-look pass against the Rangers on Friday.
Analysis: Olli Maatta stands to benefit from an increased role with Kris Letang out indefinitely, if not for the remainder of 2013-14. His ice time increased from an average of 17:43 to 21:17 on Friday. Even though his goal came as a member of the second power-play unit, the score makes a statement about how much Pittsburgh believes in him. The rookie now has six goals and 23 points in 57 games.

Maatta Assists Pens Monday

News: Olli Maatta picked up his second power-play assist of the season in Monday's win over Ottawa.
Analysis: The rookie blueliner has scored five goals and 21 points in 55 games, better than anyone could've foreseen. His strength is his strong two-way play, but fantasy owners could do worse than a defenseman with decent offensive production and a plus-10 rating.

Penguins' Maatta Picks Up Assist

News: Olli Maatta played 19:32 and notched a power-play assist against the Senators on Monday.
Analysis: It was Olli Maatta's 16th assist, and 21st point, in 55 games. Just as importantly, he's gone plus-10 so far. He certainly has a very bright future, but even now, the 19-year-old is providing some fantasy value.

Nothing The Maatta With Pens Thursday

News: Olli Maatta scored one goal and assisted on another Thursday, helping Pittsburgh to a 6-4 victory over the Islanders.
Analysis: The 19-year-old defender, who finished with a plus-3 rating Thursday, now has four goals and 14 points since November -- a span of 22 games.

Pens' Maatta Scores Game-Winner Wednesday

News: Olli Maatta scored the first game-winning goal of his career and added an assist Wednesday against Washington.
Analysis: The 19-year-old defender has four goals and 16 points in 47 games. Olli Maatta responded well to a healthy scratch earlier in January and continues to exceed expectations. His emergence could give Pittsburgh confidence to trade one of its veteran blueliners at the trade deadline.

Pens' Maatta Returns Friday

News: Olli Maatta finished pointless in 16:32 TOI on Friday after serving as a healthy scratch in Pittsburgh's previous contest.
Analysis: The rookie defender has hit a wall. He turned the puck over in multiple situations again Friday. Olli Maatta may take on a lesser role with fewer minutes as the team tries to straighten out the promising 19-year-old.

Pens' Maatta Sits Tuesday

News: Olli Maatta served as a healthy scratch Tuesday for the first time in 2013-14 against the Devils.
Analysis: The 19-year-old has hit a rough patch in his last few games. He could become a more frequent scratch with the Penguins' health on the blue line improving by the game. Olli Maatta ranks third among Pittsburgh defensemen with 12 points (3G, 9A) in 41 games. He also leads the team with 72 blocked shots.
