Shoulder Surgery Ends Season For Pens' Maatta

News: Maataa will undergo shoulder surgery Wednesday, ending his season.
Analysis: Word surfaced over the weekend that Olli Maatta was not progressing with his rehab program as quickly as the Penguins had anticipated, so the organization decided it was in the blueliner's best interest to shut things down for the season. It's the second shoulder surgery in less than a calendar year for Maatta, who previously underwent the procedure last May and barely recovered in time for the start of the season. Maatta shouldn't be in any danger of missing the beginning of the 2015-16 campaign, during which he'll aim to reestablish himself as one of the top young defensemen in the game.

Pens' Maatta (Upper Body) Likely Done For Season

News: Olli Maatta (upper body) is expected to miss the remainder of the season because of a shoulder injury, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Olli Maatta's potential season-ending injury would be a big blow along the blue line for the Penguins and fantasy owners hanging onto hopes for his return. He started the season on a good pace for a defensemen, posting nine points (one goal, eight assists) with a plus-one rating over the first 20 games. He hasn't officially been ruled out for the season yet, but it appears the injury hasn't responded adequately to the rehabilitation efforts, and the decision of whether or not he will sit will come within a few days. If the youngster does end up missing the rest of the season, he is expected to undergo an operation on the shoulder in preparation for 2015-16.

Pens' Mattaa Continues To Work Out

News: Mattaa (upper body) took part in an on-ice workout Thursday morning, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Since Olli Maatta still isn't practicing with the rest of the team, it looks like he could still be a couple weeks away from playing again. Fortunately, it doesn't appear as though he's hit any setbacks in his recovery along the way, which qualifies as good news in any injury-plagued season for the Penguins.

Pens' Maatta Starts Skating

News: Mattaa (upper body) was skating prior to Tuesday's practice.
Analysis: Just a few days earlier, the Penguins ruled Olli Maatta out for another four weeks with the injury, so his presence on the ice should just be viewed as conditioning work at this point. Once he reintegrates back into practices with the squad, there will be reason to be optimistic about a return being imminent.

Pens' Maatta Out Four More Weeks

News: Olli Maatta is expected to miss another four weeks while he rehabs from an upper-body injury.
Analysis: Coach Mike Johnston said that Olli Maatta is looking good as far as his fitness is concerned, but the timetable is an estimate -- it could be more or less than four weeks. It was originally feared that the defender might need season-ending shoulder surgery, but it appears that has been ruled out at this juncture. The 20-year-old hasn't played since Dec. 6.

Pens' Maatta Diagnosed With Mumps

News: Mattaa tested positive mumps virus and will remain in isolation for at least five days.
Analysis: Mattaa was already slated to miss the next few weeks while recovering from an undisclosed upper-body injury, but having to table his rehab activities for the next few days due to the illness will delay his return even further. He's the third Penguins player to deal with the mumps and 16th confirmed case in the NHL this season. Fortunately, the other two Penguins players who had been tested for the virus, goalie Thomas Greiss and defenseman Robert Bortuzzo, didn't display any symptoms of the mumps and have been cleared to resume playing.

Pens' Maatta To Be Tested For Mumps

News: Olli Maatta (upper body) was feeling ill Wednesday morning and will undergo a precautionary test for the mumps.
Analysis: Given that the virus has already claimed Sidney Crosby and Beau Bennett, the team is taking no chances with Olli Maatta, Robert Bortuzzo and Marc-Andre Fleury, all of whom were under the weather and absent from Wednesday's practice. Maatta's situation would probably be affected the least of those three players if he were diagnosed with the mumps, as he's expected to miss multiple weeks anyway after he was placed on injured reserve over the weekend with an upper-body injury.

Pens' Maatta (Upper Body) To Miss A Couple Weeks

News: Coach Mike Johnston said Olli Maatta (upper body) would be out for at least a couple of weeks, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Olli Maatta, who was placed on injured reserve earlier Saturday, is still undergoing tests to determine the severity of his injury. It's believed that his ailment is related to his surgically-repaired shoulder, which nearly threatened his availability for the start of the regular season. The 20-year-old has a goal and nine points over 20 games on the campaign.

Pens' Maatta Reportedly Placed On IR

News: The Penguins have reportedly placed Olli Maatta (upper body) on IR, Dan Potash of Root Sports Pittsburgh reports.
Analysis: Olli Maatta unexpectedly missed Monday's game and didn't play Friday, either. Coach Mike Johnston is expected to update Maatta's status prior to Saturday's game in Columbus. The defenseman underwent surgery to his shoulder in the spring, and it's possible he's re-injured it.

Pens' Maatta To Miss At Least Two More

News: Olli Maatta is dealing with an upper-body injury and will not play in either of the Penguins' two games over the weekend.
Analysis: Olli Maatta has been off the ice since he was surprisingly scratched from Monday's game and could be at risk of an extended absence. After Thursday's practice, coach Mike Johnston announced Maatta would undergo further testing to determine the extent of his injury. The Penguins offer to have a clearer picture of his health by the end of the weekend.

Pens' Maatta Not Practicing Tuesday

News: Olli Maatta (undisclosed) didn't participate in Tuesday's practice, Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: Coach Mike Johnston declined to provide an update on the blueliner's status, making his availability a bit foggy for Friday's game versus the Flames. Since returning from surgery on his thyroid gland on Nov. 18, Olli Maatta has produced no goals and three helpers over 10 games.

Pens' Maatta Out For Monday

News: Olli Maatta (undisclosed) will not play Monday against the Rangers.
Analysis: Olli Maatta was injured during the team's 3-2 win over the Senators on Saturday, and stayed back in Pittsburgh to be evaluated while the team travels to New York. The blueliner recorded a goal and eight assists in 20 games before getting hurt.

Pens' Maatta Not Guaranteed Top PP Time Tuesday

News: Christian Ehrhoff, not Olli Maatta, practiced on the Pens' No. 1 power-play unit Monday with Kris Letang (lower body) out for Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: Olli Maatta manned a point on the top man advantage Saturday after Letang left the game, but it looks like coach Johnston may give Ehrhoff a look in that role. It's possible that both players end up getting a look with Johnston rolling with whomever produces.

Pens' Maatta Gets Top Billing Saturday

News: The Penguins moved Olli Maatta up to their top power-play unit Saturday following the minor lower-body injury to Kris Letang.
Analysis: While the young blueliner didn't cash in on his power-play opportunity, he did add his seventh assist and eighth point in 16 games. Along with up-and-coming prospect Derrick Pouliot (who's currently skating at AHL Wilkes-Barre), Pittsburgh offers a pair of fine young defenders who figure to man the blue line along with Letang for years to come.

Pens' Maatta Plays Tuesday

News: Olli Maatta was held pointless with two blocks and three giveaways in his first action since thyroid tumor surgery Tuesday.
Analysis: After the contest Olli Maatta noted how his goalie, Marc-Andre Fleury, bailed him out on a couple occasions. The Finnish defender totaled 20:14 TOI and skated with Christian Ehrhoff. He'll look to regain his form Friday against the Islanders.

Maatta Back For Pens Tuesday

News: Olli Maatta (neck) will play Tuesday in Montreal after missing six games due to thyroid tumor surgery.
Analysis: He took part in Tuesday's game-day skate alongside Christian Ehrhoff on the team's second defensive pairing. Expected to be out all of November, Olli Maatta's returning from his surgery after only 17 days. He had six points (one goal, five assists) in 10 contests before being sidelined.

Penguins' Maata To Play Tuesday

News: Maata (neck) will play Tuesday against the Canadiens.
Analysis: Maata has been sidelined since Nov. 1 after undergoing a procedure on his neck, but he is set to return to action Tuesday night and skate as part of the Penguins' second defensive pairing with Christian Ehrhoff. Olli Maatta has tallied a goal and five assists in 10 games this season, so he could be worth a look if you are looking for some scoring help from the defensive end of the ice.

Pens' Maatta Could Play Tuesday

News: Olli Maatta (neck) will be a game-time decision for Tuesday's game against the Canadiens, Shelly Anderson reports.
Analysis: It will be pretty remarkable if Olli Maatta suits up Tuesday, considering he just had a cancerous tumor removed from his neck. The blueliner had a goal and five assists through 10 games before taking time off to have surgery.

Pens' Maatta Nearing Return

News: Coach Mike Johnston said that Olli Maatta (neck) is "at least five days away" from returning to action.
Analysis: The blueliner, who resumed skating Tuesday and practiced with the Penguins on Thursday, believes he's ready to play Friday against the Maple Leafs, but it seems the team is keeping him out just a little while longer for precautionary purposes. Olli Maatta revealed after Thursday's practice that the tumor that was surgically removed from his thyroid gland was cancerous, though he noted that he's not expected to face any long-term complications. The Penguins initially projected Maatta to miss four weeks following the surgery, but he looks poised to cut that recovery timetable in half.

News: Olli Maatta (neck) skated on his own at end of the Penguins' workout Tuesday morning, Dan Rosen of NHL.com reports.
Analysis: This represents the first time Olli Maatta has stepped onto the ice since requiring surgery to remove a tumor from his thyroid gland last week. The young blueliner is projected to return to active duty for the Penguins in approximately three more weeks.

Pens' Maatta Undergoes Surgery Tuesday

News: Olli Maatta (neck) underwent successful surgery to remove a tumor on his thyroid gland.
Analysis: Olli Maatta will have to wait seven-to-10 days before doctors are able to determine whether the tumor is malignant or mildly cancerous, but either way, it's expected that he'll make a full recovery and return to the lineup within four weeks. The 20-year-old had a goal and five assists over his first 10 games of the season.

Maatta To Play Final Game Saturday Before Surgery

News: Saturday marks Olli Maatta's last game before he undergoes thyroid tumor surgery, an operation which figures to sideline the defenseman until December.
Analysis: With a goal and six points in nine games, Olli Maatta is off to a strong start -- especially when one considers he's known about his tumor since training camp. Robert Bortuzzo is expected to take his place in the lineup, with Christian Ehrhoff and Paul Martin sharing Maatta's power-play time on the second unit.

Pens' Maatta Will Miss Four Weeks

News: Olli Maatta will have surgery next week to remove a tumor from his thyroid gland and miss four weeks as a result, Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: Olli Maatta will play the rest of this week's slate of games before undergoing surgery next week. After the surgery is completed, Maatta will likely be stashed on injured reserve for nearly the entirety of November, but is expected to make a full recovery. The situation is definitely worth monitoring moving forward, though, since there is a good chance the tumor is cancerous.

Pens' Maatta Finds First Twine Of Season

News: Olli Maatta scored his first goal of the year on two shots and went minus-1 in Thursday's overtime loss to Detroit.
Analysis: It was the 20-year-old Finn's first time finding the scoresheet since the season opener. While his youth means his offense will likely remain inconsistent, Olli Maatta is skating heavy minutes for the Pens and will have plenty of opportunities to put up points.
