News: Stefan Matteau was assigned to AHL Albany on Wednesday, the Bergen Record reports.
Analysis: Stefan Matteau was among eight players cut Wednesday, trimming the Devils' roster to 28 players. He appeared in 17 games for the Devils last season.

Devils' Matteau Released by QMJHL Blainville-Boisbrand

News: Stefan Matteau has been released by QMJHL Blainville-Boisbriand, the Star-Ledger reports.
Analysis: The former first-round (29th overall) selection was only 19 years old, but was released due to unacceptable behavior within the organization. Stefan Matteau has been benched multiple times for undisciplined play, but there was no improvement in the young prospect's behavior. Matteau appeared in 17 games with the Devils this season, scoring three points and recording six PIMs.

Devils' Matteau Heads To Junior Club

News: The Devils have returned Stefan Matteau to QMJHL Blainville-Boisbriand, the Bergen Record's Tom Gulitti reports.
Analysis: The Devils' 2012 first-rounder has one goal and two assists in 17 NHL games this season, but after seeing sporadic playing time of late, he will no doubt benefit from seeing plenty of ice time for his junior club during their playoff run. The report notes that Stefan Matteau will be be eligible to return to the NHL or play in the AHL once Blainville-Boisbriand's season is over.

Devils' Matteau A Healthy Scratch Again Monday

News: Stefan Matteau was a healthy scratch for the third straight game Monday.
Analysis: It's surprising that the Devils are benching him after committing to using the entry level of his contract this season. Nevertheless, he should be left on the waiver wire until there's a change of heart within the coaching staff.

Matteau Relegated To Devils' Fourth Line

News: Stefan Matteau was one of four players seeing time on the Devils' fourth line at Friday's morning skate, the Bergen Record's Tom Gulitti reports.
Analysis: Stefan Matteau has seen limited action since being awarded a roster spot and using a year of his entry-level contract. The kid has power forward potential and good enough hands to eventually be a threat offensively, but he hasn't been seeing enough ice time to contribute. He has two points on the season in nine games to go with 14 hits a 9:15 of ice time per-game.

New Jersey's Matteau Scores First NHL Goal

News: Stefan Matteau potted his first NHL goal on Saturday, scoring the first of New Jersey's three goals in its win over Pittsburgh.
Analysis: Stefan Matteau played just 6:48 in the victory, his lowest total of the season, but did manage to get his name on the scoresheet for the first time in his career. Matteau finished off a slap pass from Andy Greene in front of the Pittsburgh net to tie the game late in the second period. He's listed as being the left wing on the team's top line with Travis Zajac and Ilya Kovachuk, but he doesn't play nearly as much as those two. Matteau is a budding power forward with an offensive flair to his game, but won't hold much value in single-season leagues; he's still a few years away from being relevant in most keeper leagues, but he is a mere 18 years old.

Opportunity Knocking For Devils' Matteau?

News: With the news that Dainus Zubrus could be out for a while Stefan Matteau should be in line for more consistent ice time with the Devils.
Analysis: Stefan Matteau is here to stay in New Jersey after he played his sixth game of the season Thursday, preventing him from being sent back to junior. The team's first-round pick in last June's draft, 29th overall, Matteau is a strong skater with an offensive touch to his game. A power forward, Matteau is seeing time with the team's top duo of Ilya Kovalchuk and Travis Zajac in his scant action so far. (Matteau is averaging 8:45 per game).

Devils' Matteau Here To Stay

News: Stefan Matteau, the 29th pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, played his sixth NHL game Thursday, meaning the Devils plan to keep him up with the big club for now and have already burned the first year of his entry-level deal.
Analysis: Stefan Matteau only skated for 10:07 in Thursday's win over Tampa Bay and is still looking for his first NHL point, so he's really not ready for fantasy prime time yet. However, he's certainly worth a spot in keeper leagues and perhaps he'll start to figure out the pro game later on in the season if he can stick with the team. There is plenty of power forward potential here.

Devils' Matteau Will Not Play Sunday

News: Stefan Matteau will not play Sunday against the Islanders, the Bergen Record's Tom Gulitti reports.
Analysis: Stefan Matteau has played five games with the Devils this season, and a sixth will use up the first year on his entry-level contract. The team will mull it over a bit more, but a decision on whether to keep Matteau or send him down will likely be made sooner rather than later.

Devils' Matteau Scratched Saturday

News: Stefan Matteau did not play in Saturday's loss to the Penguins. It's the second straight game he's been scratched, as the team continues to mull over its options regarding the prized youngster.
Analysis: Stefan Matteau has played five NHL games, so with the next one his entry-level clock kicks in. It's been a mixed bag around the league with teams in similar situations, as some have already committed to burning that year because they've see the player's talent first hand and feel their NHL readiness is close enough, while others have decided it's not worth it and have sent the player back to juniors. The Devils can string the decision on Matteau along a little bit longer, but at some point he's taking up a valuable roster spot so they'll need to commit.

Devils Not Sending Matteau Back Yet

News: Stefan Matteau was an extra skater on during the team's morning practice Thursday as the Devils will "take more time deciding whether to keep him in the NHL or return him to his junior team," the Bergen Record's Tom Gulitti reports. He will not play Thursday against the Islanders.
Analysis: Stefan Matteau showed flashes of talent in the scant ice time he was given during the five games he's allowed to play before it counting as a year off his entry-level contract. He's a strong skater with a physical edge to his game that has some offensive potential. The Devils are waiting to decide if they'll keep him or send him back to the Q.

Matteau To Skate On Devils' Top Line Sunday

News: Stefan Matteau will skate alongside Ilya Kovalchuk and Travis Zajac on Sunday in Montreal, the Bergen Record's Tom Gulitti reports.
Analysis: Stefan Matteau has seen limited action in New Jersey's three games this season, but the Devils will likely use the next two contests to determine if they will keep him in the NHL or return him to Blainsville-Boisbriand (QMJHL). Matteau has played with energy during his limited ice time notching several hits and six shots on goal. Odds are that Matteau will return to juniors, but the Devils could use his energy with their dearth of forward depth.

Devils' Matteau Makes NHL Debut

News: Stefan Matteau, who was picked 28th overall in last June's NHL Entry Draft, made his NHL debut Saturday in a 2-1 win over the Islanders. He skated 7:26 and had three shots.
Analysis: He was on the fourth line alongside Jacob Josefson and Cam Janssen. It's hard to believe the conservative Devils will keep him longer than the five-game maximum for junior players.

Matteau With Devils For Now

News: Stefan Matteau will open the season with the Devils and could play Saturday evening against the Islanders, the Bergen Record's Tom Gulitti reports.
Analysis: The Devils have five games to determine if Stefan Matteau, the team's first-round pick this past June, will remain in the NHL or be sent back to his junior squad, Blainville-Boisbriand (QMJHL). If Matteau plays more than five games, it will count as a year off his entry-level contract. Matteau had 28 points in 34 games in junior and plays more of a physical game.

Devils' Matteau To Attend Upcoming Training Camp

News: Stefan Matteau will attend the Devils' upcoming training camp, Bob McKenzie of TSN.ca reports.
Analysis: The 18-year-old will leave his junior team to attend the Devil's shortened NHL camp, which is expected to begin Sunday. Stefan Matteau was taken with the 29th pick in June's entry draft, and he'll now get to show what he has in camp after scoring 18 goals and adding 10 assists in 34 games in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League during the lockout.
