Opportunity Knocks For Bruins' Subban

News: Malcolm Subban is slated to participate in the Bruins' annual summer development camp, which runs from Wednesday through Sunday, the Providence Journal reports.
Analysis: With Chad Johnson having signed with the Islanders, Niklas Svedberg would appear to have the edge in claiming the job as Tuukka Rask's top backup in 2014-15. In such a scenario, Malcolm Subban would have a chance to see plenty of action this coming season as AHL Providence's top netminder. In his first campaign as a pro, Subban put together a 15-10-5 record, 2.31 GAA and .920 save percentage in 33 games for Providence while working in tandem with Svedberg, who appeared in 45 AHL contests. With Rask in his prime, the Bruins have no reason to rush the 20-year-old Subban to the NHL, but the 2012 first-rounder remains a top prospect and thus maintains value in keeper formats.

Bruins Send SubbanTo AHL

News: The Bruins have assigned Malcolm Subban to AHL Providence, the Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: With Tuukka Rask in the fold for the long haul, Malcolm Subban won't be rushed along by the B's, but the 2012 first-rounder is brimming with long-term upside. At the age of 19, though, he is likely to need at least a couple of seasons of minor-league experience before permanently graduating to the NHL.

Bruins' Subban Struggles Thursday

News: Malcolm Subban allowed eight goals on 28 shots in Thursday's preseason loss to Detroit.
Analysis: It was the young goalie's first start for the B's after he stopped all 12 shots he faced in Monday night's 6-3 win over Montreal. Overall, it was a forgettable night for Malcolm Subban, but it does nothing to change his promising long-term outlook. He's expected to open his first pro season with AHL Providence.

Bruins' Subban Sharp Monday

News: Malcolm Subban stopped all 12 shots he faced in Monday's 6-3 win over Montreal in the Bruins' preseason opener.
Analysis: Not a bad opener for Malcolm Subban, but he's not really in the conversation to open the season with Boston, the Boston Globe notes. The young goalie is clearly best served by seeing ample playing time at this stage of his development as a pro and it's likely he will start the season with AHL Providence.

Bruins' Subban Likely Ready For The Pros

News: GM Peter Chiarelli didn't rule out Malcolm Subban competing for the Bruins' No. 2 goaltending job this coming season, the Boston Herald reports.
Analysis: That said, the 19-year-old Malcolm Subban is a longshot to stick with the big club, with an assignment with AHL Providence -- where he'd likely be split time with either Niklas Svedberg or Chad Johnson -- likely on tap for him. In what was likely his final junior season, Subban compiled a 29-11-4 record along with a 2.14 GAA and superb .934 save percentage (both OHL bests) for the Belleville Bulls, to go along with five shutouts. With Tuukka Rask around for the long haul though, Subban won't be rushed along, but the Bruins do believe that the 2012 first-rounder is ready to move on to the pro level, where he is likely to need at least a couple of seasons of minor league experience before graduating to the NHL.

Bruins Won't Move Subban

News: The Bruins have no interest in dealing Subban, cbslocal.com reports. "I could tell you this, I'm not trading Malcolm Subban," GM Peter Chiarelli said Wednesday. "He's young, a very good goalie prospect and I see him being a big part of our future. We have some goalie depth, but I can tell you I'm not trading Malcom Subban."
Analysis: The Bruins are said to be interested in acquiring Calgary's Jarome Iginla and trading for him would come at quite a cost, which is why Malcolm Subban's name is being brought up in trade rumors. In any case, while the 19-year-old Subban, selected 24th overall in last year draft, is probably two or three years away from prime-time, he is clearly viewed as a key part of the Bruins' future and won't be dealt at this time.
