Predators' Mason: 44 Saves In Loss

News: Chris Mason was pelted with pucks Saturday night in a 3-1 loss to Columbus. He made 44 saves and allowed just two goals.
Analysis: It was a statement game for the beleaguered netminder who struggled mightily this year. And at 37, he may be hard-pressed to pick up a job this offseason. There may be a chance we've seen the last of him.

Mason To Close Out Season For Preds

News: Chris Mason will start Saturday's season finale at Columbus, according to Jeff Rimer, play-by-play broadcaster for the Blue Jackets.
Analysis: It was a forgettable campaign for Chris Mason this year, who will try for just his second win in 11 appearances backing up Pekka Rinne. He will become an unrestricted free agent after this season, and it's not clear at this point whether the Preds will try to retain his services for next year. Mason's fantasy value was already quite low coming into this season, and it doesn't look to be any higher come October.

Wings Light Up Preds' Mason

News: Chris Mason allowed five goals on 38 shots in Thursday's defeat at the hands of the Red Wings.
Analysis: Chris Mason doesn't get a chance to play very often in Nashville, but when he does, he usually loses. In 10 games this year (five starts), he's gone a brutal 1-6-1. Presumably, Pekka Rinne will close things out Saturday in Columbus.

Preds Start Mason On Thursday

News: Chris Mason will start Thursday's game against the Red Wings, Josh Cooper of The Tennessean reports.
Analysis: As the Preds' season winds down, Pekka Rinne gets a well-deserved rest Thursday, with Chris Mason (1-5-1 with a 3.80 GAA) in line to make just his fifth start of the campaign.

Mason, Preds Roughed Up

News: Chris Mason allowed five goals on 18 shots in Friday's 5-2 loss to Dallas.
Analysis: Chris Mason's stat line left much to be desired, especially for a backup playing in the shadow of one of the league's top netminders in Pekka Rinne.

Predators' Mason Gets Rare Start Friday

News: Chris Mason will be in goal for Friday's game against the Stars, Josh Cooper of The Tennessean reports.
Analysis: Pekka Rinne has started every game since Feb. 18 and will likely start back-to-back games Sunday and Monday, so head coach Barry Trotz figured it would be a good time to get his regular goalie some rest. Chris Mason owns a 3.55 GAA this season, so expectations should not be high in Mason's first start in nearly two months.

Nashville's Mason Busy In Relief

News: Chris Mason played 50:52 in relief of Pekka Rinne in Friday's 6-3 loss to Calgary allowing three goals on 19 shots.
Analysis: Chris Mason likely won't see too many starts, but Friday's relief gig might be the closest he gets to a full game for a while after Pekka Rinne allowed two goals on two shots. Mason is behind one of the NHL's premier goalies and his value is tied to RInne.

Predators' Mason Lets In Six In Loss

News: Chris Mason gave up six goals on 18 shots in a loss to the Avalanche on Monday. He was pulled after 33:17.
Analysis: Pekka Rinne clearly has the starting job in Nashville, so this could only lead to Rinne being relied on more.

Predators Mason Gets The Nod Monday

News: Chris Mason will be between the pipes for Monday's game against the Avalanche, Predators radio announcer Tom Callahan reports.
Analysis: Regular goalie Pekka Rinne will give way to Chris Mason, who will start his third game of the season Monday. Mason has allowed just three goals over 124 minutes of action this season, so he could be a sneaky spot start option Monday against a Colorado team that is averaging just 2.28 goals per game.

Preds' Mason Strong In OT Loss

News: Chris Mason stopped 30 shots in a 2-1 overtime loss to the Wild on Saturday night.
Analysis: He played a strong game, but just didn't get the support to win. His starts are few and far between, so he's only worth rostering as insurance.

Predators' Mason Expected To Start Saturday

News: Chris Mason will get the start in goal Saturday, according to Dan Myers.
Analysis: Chris Mason will get a rare start for the Preds in the first game of a back-to-back this weekend.

Preds' Mason Does His Best Rinne Impression

News: Chris Mason stopped 29 of 30 shots Tuesday to down the Wild in his first action of the year.
Analysis: Chris Mason spotted Pekka Rinne in this one after Rinne and the Preds opened the season with two overtime losses. Despite the fine play, Mason probably won't see much consistent action backing up Nashville's workhorse unless Rinne falters or is injured.

Preds' Mason To Start Over Rinne Tuesday

News: Chris Mason will get the start in goal over Pekka Rinne on Tuesday, the FOX Sports North reports.
Analysis: Rinne suited up for the team's first two games, but will give way for Chris Mason to make his season debut. Even with two overtime losses on his ledger this season, Rinne's still one of the best netminders in the game, so Mason's starts should remain relatively scarce.

Preds' Mason To See More Ice Time This Season

News: The Preds plan on using Chris Mason to cut down on starter Pekka Rinne's workload this season, the Tennessean reports.
Analysis: With a condensed, 48-game season set to begin, the Preds are hoping to give Chris Mason more ice time in the hopes that Rinne will be fresher come playoff time. The Preds have eight sets of back-to-back games on tap this season, so you could see Mason start as many as a dozen games. He's not a bad option in deeper formats where backup goalies have some value.

C. Mason To Back Up Rinne In Nashville

News: Chris Mason has agreed to a one-year deal in Nashville, reports Kevin Allen of USA Today.
Analysis: It's worth $1.25 million plus bonuses. Don't expect him to get much time in net, though -- that blue paint belongs to Pekka Rinne and he's an absolute workhorse.

Isles Shell Winnipeg's Mason

News: Chris Mason posted a feeble .821 save percentage Thursday night in Uniondale, allowing five goals off of 28 shots in a loss to the Islanders.
Analysis: Despite the rough outing, Chris Mason still maintains a .904 save percentage on the year. The veteran netminder has likely seen his last ice time of the season, as the Jets will hope to end their inaugural campaign on a high note. Regular starter Ondrej Pavelec will be in goal as Winnipeg goes for a home win over the visiting Lightning on Saturday night.

Mason In Thursday For Jets

News: Chris Mason will face the Islanders on Thursday, according to Dan Kamal of CJOB 68 Sports.
Analysis: Chris Mason is 4-1 against the Isles in his career, but he is just 4-5 on the road this season for the Jets.

Mason Starting Friday For Jets

News: Chris Mason will be in net for the Jets Friday against the Hurricanes, according to Chip Alexander.
Analysis: Chris Mason has been a Hurricanes killer this year going 3-1 with a 1.56 GAA. He's only won four other games this season against the rest of the NHL.

Jets' Mason Steady Versus Canes

News: Chris Mason denied 30 of the 33 shots sent his way Friday night in Carolina. The veteran has posted an 8-6 record in 2011-2012.
Analysis: Chris Mason would have seen more starts in the month of March were the Jets not in the throws of a desperate push for the playoffs. Nonetheless, head coach Claude Noel has made clear this season that things will not be as they were in St. Louis for Mason; he is very much this team's second option.

Jets' Mason Gets Call Mid-Game

News: Chris Mason replaced a struggling Ondrej Pavelec in Tuesday night's road loss to Pittsburgh. The veteran net minder gave up three goals off of 11 shots after being substituted in during the second period.
Analysis: With just nine games left on Winnipeg's regular season schedule, it is hard to imagine the Jets' backup achieving any sort of fantasy relevance before the year is out.

Winnipeg's Mason Struggles Versus St. Louis

News: Chris Mason allowed two goals off of a paltry 16 shots in Saturday's home loss to the Blues. The veteran netminder also let by two of four St. Louis penalty shots in the game's deciding shootout.
Analysis: Despite the middling effort, Chris Mason maintains a .909 save percentage, good enough to be called upon whenever the Jets coaching staff feels regular starter Ondrej Pavelec could use a break.

Mason Called On Saturday For Jets

News: Chris Mason will make an appearance in net for the Jets on Saturday against the Blues, according to Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press.
Analysis: Chris Mason has only made 12 starts on the year, though he has been effective when called upon with an impressive 2.30 GAA. He also owns a 13-4-1 career record against the Blues.

Winnipeg's Mason Allows Three in Minnesota

News: Chris Mason stopped 22 of 25 regulation shots Thursday night as Winnipeg bested the Wild at the Xcel Energy Center. The veteran goaltender also turned away three of Minnesota's four shootout attempts.
Analysis: Though Chris Mason may provide a more even, reliable game than teammate Ondrej Pavelec, he does not see enough starts to warrant a fantasy roster spot.

Mason Starting Thursday For Winnipeg

News: Chris Mason will start against Minnesota on Thursday, CJOB-AM's Dan Kamal reports.
Analysis: Chris Mason has a strong 2.26 GAA on the year, but his 6-6 record illustrates how his offense doesn't provide much cover.

Jets' Mason Turns In Strong Performance Versus Panthers

News: Chris Mason stopped 28 of 30 shots Friday night as the Panthers bested the Jets 2-1.
Analysis: Though Chris Mason is among the league's most capable backups, it is important to keep in mind that he is, at the end of the day, just that; a backup. He is likely to start only five to ten more times for the balance of the regular season.
