Former Chicago Forward Mayers Announces Retirement

News: Jamal Mayers announced his retirement from the NHL on Friday, Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Analysis: A member of last season's Stanley Cup-winning Blackhawks squad, Jamal Mayers indicated during the offseason that he intended to keep his career going, but received little interest from NHL teams willing to help him achieve that goal. He retires with 219 points over 915 career NHL contests with the Blackhawks, Sharks, Flames, Maple Leafs, and Blues.

Mayers Wants One More NHL Season

News: Jamal Mayers is looking to play one more season in the NHL, but it probably will not be with the Blackhawks, NBC Sports reports.
Analysis: Jamal Mayers, who became an unrestricted free agent in July, skated in only 19 games for Chicago in the 2013 season and did not appear in the playoffs. It appeared that he was going to retire right after the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup, but that notion changed.

Hawks' Mayers Mulling Retirement

News: Jamal Mayers is looking at retiring after winning his first Stanley Cup in his 15-year career, ESPN Chicago reports.
Analysis: Jamal Mayers will become an unrestricted free agent next week and has been with the Blackhawks since 2011. He skated in only 19 regular season games this season and did not skate in a playoff game. "I realize where I am in my career," Mayers said. "It's reached the ultimate it's almost climbing the mountain and seeing over the top. It may have changed things a little bit for me. I think that will play itself out in the next couple of weeks. If I do walk away, I can walk away as a champion and not many people can say that."

Hawks' Mayers Back In Lineup Saturday

News: Jamal Mayers saw ice time on Saturday for the first time in April and since March 29.
Analysis: Jamal Mayers saw time with the club having a couple of players injured and he saw little time, less than seven minutes. He has been more of a healthy scratch than on the ice. Mayers might be in street clothes Monday against the Canucks with the possibility of both Patrick Sharp (upper body) and D Michal Rozsival (upper body) returning to the lineup. He did win both his face-offs against the Coyotes and had three hits. It will be hard to see the Blackhawks re-signing Mayers, who is a free-agent after this season.

Blackhawks' Mayers A Healthy Scratch Sunday

News: Jamal Mayers will not play Sunday against the Kings, Tracey Myers of CSNChicago.com reports.
Analysis: Jamal Mayers notched his first two assists of the season in Friday's win over San Jose, but he'll watch from the press box Sunday as a healthy scratch.

Blackhawks' Mayers A Healthy Scratch Wednesday

News: Jamal Mayers will be a healthy scratch Wednesday against the Wild, the Blackhawks' official Twitter account reports.
Analysis: Jamal Mayers played in each of the team's last three games, and averaged five-plus minutes, but he'll be back in the press box Wednesday.

Hawks' Mayers Gets In Lineup On Thursday

News: A disgruntled Jamal Mayers finally was on the ice Thursday against the Stars after being a healthy scratch for the first three games of the 2013 season, the Chicago Tribune reports. "It's certainly not what I expected," said Mayers. "It's very difficult, but you have chances to work on your game and preparing to stay ready."
Analysis: Jamal Mayers, who re-signed with the Blackhawks in the offseason, saw close to seven minutes of ice time. He won two out of the five face-offs in the game to head the fourth line. Last season, Mayers played in 81 of the 82 regular season games with six goals and nine assists. Mayers replaced Brandon Bollig in the lineup Thursday.

Mayers To Re-up With Hawks

News: Jamal Mayers reportedly has signed a one-year contract with the Blackhawks for $600,000 along with bonuses, TSN reports.
Analysis: The veteran did what the Blackhawks wanted of him during the regular season on the fourth line. His 2011-12 numbers were consistent with 2010-11. In 2011-12, he put up six goals and nine assists while in 2010-11 he scored three goals and tallied 11 assists. His penalty minutes were down at 91 minutes this past season compared to his 124 penalty minutes with San Jose in 2010-11.

Hawks' Mayers Sees Limited Time Tuesday

News: Jamal Mayers played just 9:18 against the Devils on Tuesday night.
Analysis: He fired a shot on goal, but did not have an impact elsewhere on the score sheet. Look elsewhere for forward help at the present time.

Hawks' Mayers Misses Wednesday's Game

News: Jamal Mayers (illness) was sick and did not skate Wednesday against the Canucks.
Analysis: The Blackhawks did not state what specific illness that Jamal Mayers had, but he is day-to-day. Mayers equaled the number of points, 14 (five goals and nine assists), as he accumulated last season.

Blackhawks Sign Mayers

News: The Blackhawks have signed Mayers to a one-year contract, TSN's Darren Dreger reports.
Analysis: Mayers, who last year had 124 penalty minutes in 78 games for the San Jose Sharks, is a serviceable fantasy pickup if you find yourself in need of PIMs next season. If not, look elsewhere.

Mayers Done With Sharks

News: GM Doug Wilson announced Monday that Mayers will not be returning to the Sharks next season, the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Mayers brings grit and physicality to the table, as evidenced by his 124 PIMs this past season. His upside on offense is limited however, as he scored just three goals and 14 points in 2010-11. The 36-year-old could catch on elsewhere in 2011-12 as a fourth-liner, but penalty minutes are all he can offer fantasy owners.

Sharks' Mayers To See Action Tuesday?

News: Mayers is one of three Sharks who could replace the injured Ryane Clowe (ankle) for Tuesday's Game 6 against Detroit, the Sharks' official site reports.
Analysis: Mayers has had more playoff experience in his career than Ben Eager or Jamie McGinn, the other candidates to fill in Tuesday. However, Mayers has averaged just 4:54 of ice time this postseason, so don't expect a whole lot from him even if he does make his way into the lineup.

Sharks' Mayers Dishes Twice For Scores Thursday

News: Mayers set up two scores Thursday to help the Sharks crush the Stars, 6-0.
Analysis: This was Mayers' first multi-point game all season. He's good for the occasional marking in the box score, but only averages 8:42 of ice time in 2010-11.

Sharks' Mayers Pots Rare Goal

News: Mayers scored at even strength in Monday's loss to the Canucks.
Analysis: Mayers brings grit and physicality to the Sharks' lineup, but his seven points in 36 games won't impress anyone in the fantasy hockey realm.

More Sin-Bin Tme For Sharks' Mayers

News: The zebras collared Mayers for a five-minute fighting major Saturday against St. Louis. He also contributed conventionally to the Sharks' 4-1 win, with a first-period assist.
Analysis: The assist is just gravy; Mayers's sole reliable fantasy value is in the PIM category, where he leads the Sharks with 69 on the year.

Mayers Restoring Order in San Jose

News: The Sharks are tops in the NHL in penalty minutes, averaging 20.3 team PIMs per game, the San Jose Mercury News reports. With 34 PIMs of his own, Mayers accounts for most of the PIMs by Team Teal.
Analysis: Mayers, who has only played in eight games so far, has two more penalty minutes than Jody Shelley (PHI), the Sharks' former enforcer. There is little doubt that Mayers is physical, but the Sharks are spreading the wealth of PIMs this season, with the closest resemblance to a team enforcer being 6-foot-5, 250-pound Frazer McLaren.

Mayers Assessed 17 PIMs in Sharks' Win

News: Mayers collected 17 penalty minutes in San Jose's easy win over Edmonton on Saturday.
Analysis: This, not scoring, is where his fantasy value will come from. To his credit, the sin-bin time came in the second period of a close contest, before the Sharks broke it open with three third-period tallies.

Mayers Records Assist in Sharks Debut

News: Mayers assisted on Scott Nichol's first-period goal in his first game as a Shark, Thursday's win over the Avalanche.
Analysis: Mayers has never been much of a scorer, but if he stays healthy, he could rack some solid PIM totals.

Sharks' Mayers (Upper Body) Hoping To Suit Up Thursday

News: Mayers is hoping to make his Sharks debut Thursday against the Avalanche, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Mayers reportedly has been practicing with the team, an obvious prerequisite for getting into game action. He should be a valuable role player for the Sharks, albeit with points difficult to find.

Sharks' Mayers (Upper Body) Nearing Return

News: Mayers (upper body) is getting closer to rejoining the lineup, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Except for a pair of recent practices, Mayers has been out of action since sustaining an arm stinger in the preseason. Even when the veteran returns, he likely will be away from a scoring line, making it difficult to find the points that fantasy owners require.

Sharks' Mayers (Upper Body) Still Not Ready For Team Debut

News: Mayers (upper body) was held off the ice in practice Tuesday, the Sharks' official site reports.
Analysis: "Jammer didn't skate today," said head coach Todd McLellan. "I thought he might be back on the ice today and he wasn't so we'll have to re-evaluate on Thursday." Mayers has yet to play in a game for San Jose. But even when he does shake off the upper-body ailment, the veteran should be left alone in the fantasy realm as he is more of an "intangibles" type of player, someone who works hard but seldom shows up with worthy statistics in a box score.

Sharks' Mayers (Arm) Likely to Miss Opener

News: Mayers (arm) will likely miss Friday's regular-season opener against the Blue Jackets, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Mayers reportedly is still dealing with a lingering arm injury that he originally sustained in a Sept. 28 preseason game against the Canucks. Either Tommy Wingels or John McCarthy will fill in for Mayers on the fourth line.

Sharks' Mayers Held Out Wednesday With Arm Injury

News: Mayers missed Wednesday's game against Vancouver with an arm injury, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Mayers reportedly suffered an arm stinger in Tuesday's loss to the Canucks, but he should be fine moving forward. The veteran skater should provide Team Teal with much-needed grit and leadership on the rink.
