Sopel Unlikely Coming Back to Montreal

News: The Canadiens are not expected to bring back Sopel next season because of cap restraints, the Montreal Gazette reports.

Habs Rest Sopel

News: Sopel was given the night off Thursday, the Montreal Gazette reports.
Analysis: The Canadiens, who can finish no worse than seventh after picking up a point in Thursday's overtime loss to Ottawa, may rest various guys from here on out. Particularly players that have been playing with/through injuries. Sopel had been dealing with a hand injury in late March.

Sopel Returns In Habs' Loss

News: Sopel returned to the Montreal lineup Thursday after missing seven games with a hand injury.
Analysis: Sopel was a minus-2 in 15:29 of Montreal's 7-0 loss to the Bruins. It was his first loss in a Canadiens' uniform.

News: Sopel (hand) could be available for Thursday's game in Boston, the Montreal Gazette reports.
Analysis: On Wednesday, we were told Sopel wouldn't play until next week at the earliest, but now we get he could be available. Sopel and other injured Canadiens skated Wednesday as the team prepares to face the Bruins, but none of them will be rushed back.

Sopel Out Indefinitely For Habs

News: On Friday the Canadiens revealed that Sopel will be out indefinitely with a broken right hand, according to TSN.
Analysis: The newly-acquired Sopel was brought in because the Habs have issues on defense. Sopel has very little impact on fantasy rosters, but Montreal will miss his physical presence.

Habs' Sopel Sits

News: Sopel did not play in Thursday's loss to the Blues because of an upper-body injury, the Montreal Gazette reports.

Habs Have Sopel

News: Sopel (undisclosed) was active for Tuesday night's game and had 14:36 of ice time in Montreal's win over Boston.
Analysis: Sopel and his blueline mates were stellar in front of Carey Price, with the defenseman accounting for 27 of the Canadiens' 35 blocked shots on the night.

Habs' Sopel Not A Sure Thing

News: Canadiens head coach Jacques Martin would not say Sopel (undisclosed) is a sure thing for Tuesday night's game against Boston, the Montreal Gazette reports.
Analysis: Sopel and forward Michael Cammalleri took "therapy" days Monday and sat out practice. Sopel has been a defensive and penalty-killing stalwart since joining the Canadiens, who are 4-0 since acquiring him.

Sopel Debuts With Habs

News: Sopel made his Montreal debut Saturday night, pairing up with Yannick Weber and getting 17:34 of ice time in the Canadiens' win over the Hurricanes.
Analysis: Sopel logged valuable minutes on the penalty-kill unit, which means Canadiens coach Jacques Martin can limit the amount of time he needs from the 36-year-old Roman Hamrlik.

Sopel To Play Saturday For Habs

News: Sopel, who was acquired by Montreal on Thursday in a trade from Atlanta, is expected to join his new teammates on the ice for the first time during Saturday morning's skate and will be in the lineup that evening against Carolina, the Montreal Gazette reports.
Analysis: Sopel was one of a few Thrashers to have a positive plus-minus (plus-7) and figures to be a big help to an injury-depleted blue line in Montreal. The Habs already have offensive defensemen (P.K. Subban, James Wisniewski) on the roster and have a need for the steady stay-at-home work Sopel provides.

Habs Acquire Sopel

News: The Canadiens have obtained Sopel and Nigel Dawes from the Thrashers for Ben Maxwell and a fourth-round draft choice, TSN.ca reports.
Analysis: Sopel adds depth and veteran presence to the Habs' blue line, but his fantasy impact will be minimal. He accumulated just seven points and 16 PIMs in 59 games for the Thrashers this season.

Nice Game for Atlanta's Sopel

News: Sopel picked up two assists Saturday.
Analysis: Nice game -- the points doubled his season output. But that doesn't make him fantasy worthy.

Thrashers' Sopel: Scores First Goal in 70 Games

News: Sopel opened the scoring Saturday with a point shot that went behind a screened Marc-Andre Fleury.
Analysis: Sopel last scored a goal on November 15, 2009 against the San Jose Sharks, telling you all you need to know about his fantasy value.

Thrashers' Sopel Logging Solid Minutes

News: Sopel has averaged 16 minutes of ice time and has logged a minus-2 rating in his past two games.
Analysis: The gritty Sopel has more value to the Thrashers than your fantasy team with only one point in 14 games this season. He is somebody best left on the waiver wire.

Thrashers' Sopel Sits Out With Back Soreness

News: Sopel was scratched from Thursday's lineup with a sore back, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Analysis: Noah Welch took Sopel's place in the lineup. Consider Sopel questionable for Saturday's game against the Blackhawks.

Sopel gets new start with Thrashers

News: The Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks dealt playoff star Dustin Byfuglien along with defenseman Brent Sopel and forward Ben Eager to the Atlanta Thrashers for a package of draft picks and players. Chicago gets first- (24th overall) and second-round picks in the 2010 NHL Draft as well as forwards Marty Reasoner, Joey Crabb and Jeremy Morin. Atlanta also receives prospect Akim Aliu in the deal that became official early Thursday morning.
Analysis: Sopel, 33, had a goal and five assists in the playoffs but had only one goal in each of the last two regular seasons. That's not a totally fair assessment, however, since he was banged up in 2008-09 and that prompted him to take on a more defensive role for the Blackhawks when he finally returned to action. Sopel could become a two-way option again in Atlanta, but we don't consider him anything more than a late-round Fantasy flier on Draft Day 2010. He needs to prove he is a 30-40-point threat again before we can trust him in Fantasy.

Sopel returns for Blackhawks

News: Blackhawks D Brent Sopel returned to action on Tuesday in New York as he faced the Islanders after missing time with a lower-body injury. Sopel had been out since Feb. 9 and was fine as the teams returned from the Olympic hockey break.
Analysis: Sopel doesn't matter much in Fantasy since he has one goal and six points in 57 games. Sopel is best used in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for defensive stats.

Sopel nursing lower-body injury

News: The Sports Xchange reports Blackhawks D Brent Sopel has a lower-body injury and won't play until March. He had missed the last two games before the Olympic break.
Analysis: There are rumors that Chicago could look to trade Sopel by the March 3 deadline, so the team can free up some cap space. Sopel is under contract for $2.3 million for one more year. However, coach Joel Quenneville is quite fond of Sopel because he does the dirty work and blocks shots. Unfortunately, Sopel doesn't matter much in Fantasy since he has one goal and six points in 57 games. Sopel is best used in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for defensive stats when healthy.

Sopel takes to ice vs. Sharks

News: Blackhawks D Brent Sopel returned to the lineup on Thursday against the Sharks after missing one game with an upper-body injury. He had no points in 14:15 of ice time and finished at minus-1.
Analysis: Sopel, who has been playing hurt for weeks, pretty much got a day off on Tuesday. Coach Joel Quenneville loves the fact Sopel is dedicated to playing defense and doesn't mind giving up his body for the betterment of the team. Unfortunately, that doesn't register in Fantasy since Sopel's offensive numbers are in the tank. He is best used in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for defensive stats when healthy.

Sopel will play on Thursday

News: The Blackhawks' official Twitter feed reports that Blackhawks D Brent Sopel (upper body) will return to the lineup Thursday against San Jose after missing Tuesday's game in Edmonton.
Analysis: Sopel had a couple of great offensive seasons in Vancouver earlier in his career, but his days as a 40-point guy appear to be over for now. He is best used in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for defensive stats.

Sopel playing hurt, blocking shots

News: The Sports Xchange reports Blackhawks defenseman Brent Sopel has been playing hurt for the last week. That's the way it is when shot-blocking is one of your main duties. Coach Joel Quenneville appreciates what Sopel brings to the team. "He plays in dangerous areas, where guys are loading up and he's blocking shots," Quenneville said. "Blocking shots is a skill, and some are better at it than others. (Sopel) is willing to block some key shots, even if it means getting hit on the side or on the knee, and he's definitely helped our penalty kill."
Analysis: Unfortunately, Sopel's new role with Chicago has hurt his Fantasy appeal. After being a 40-point threat during his earlier hockey days, Sopel has only six points in 51 games this season. Chicago gets offensive production off its blue line from the likes of Duncan Keith, Brian Campbell and Cam Barker. Sopel is best used in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for defensive stats.

Sopel back in action for Chicago

News: Chicago D Brent Sopel returned to the ice from a wrist injury on Tuesday in a game at Ottawa. Sopel was injured on Sunday but didn't miss any games.
Analysis: Two 40-point seasons prove that Sopel does have some offensive skills, but he's really struggled to get involved since coming over to Chicago. Continue to ignore him in all Fantasy formats until he becomes more consistent.

Sopel injures wrist vs. Red Wings

News: Chicago D Brent Sopel left the ice bent over and holding his left wrist or hand after colliding with Justin Abdelkader, Antti Niemi and the goal post about seven minutes into the third period of Sunday's shootout win over Detroit.
Analysis: Two 40-point seasons prove that Sopel does have some offensive skills, but he's really struggled to get involved since coming over to Chicago. Continue to ignore him in all Fantasy formats, healthy or not.
