Ducks' Vatanen Notches Two Points In Game 5

News: Sami Vatanen tallied a goal and an assist in Monday's Game 5 win over the Blackhawks.
Analysis: Sami Vatanen has had a strong offensive showing in the playoffs, as Monday was his third multi-point performance of the postseason. He figures to remain one of top options for fantasy purposes on the Ducks' blueline as Anaheim looks to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals in Wednesday's Game 6.

Ducks' Vatanen Contributes Assist, Five SOG

News: Sami Vatanen had a productive outing in Tuesday's triple-overtime Game 2 loss to the Blackhawks, producing an assist, five shots on goal, and five blocks across 37:57 of ice time.
Analysis: Sami Vatanen very nearly ended the game on two occasions, hitting the post behind Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford twice in the extra periods. The 23-year-old is the Ducks' top offensive threat from the blue line, and his numbers through this point in the postseason have backed it up. Over the Ducks' 11 games, Vatanen has recorded two goals, six assists, and 24 shot attempts.

Vatanen's Two Points Lead Ducks To Series Victory

News: Sami Vatanen registered a goal and assist in Wednesday's series-clinching Game 4 win over the Jets.
Analysis: Though he was held off on the score sheet in the middle two games of the series, Sami Vatanen's multi-point efforts in Games 1 and 4 surely elated those who drafted him in playoff pools. Since returning from a lower-body injury in late March, Vatanen has shown little sign of rust. He has two goals, six assists and 40 shots over his last 14 games.

Vatanen Key For Ducks In Game 1

News: Sami Vatanen scored the game-opening goal, then contributed two third-period power-play assists Thursday in a Game 1 victory over Winnipeg.
Analysis: The Jets scored the next two goals after Sami Vatanen's early-first-period tally, but the Ducks rallied in the third, and the Finnish defenseman was a key cog. Of course, after he racked up a dozen goals and 37 points despite missing 15 games this year, that's not much of a surprise. Although Vatanen finished the regular season with five straight scoreless contests, the NHL playoffs are a new season of their own.

Vatanen Assists On Winning Goal For Ducks

News: Sami Vatanen assisted on Corey Perry's overtime winner Friday night against the Avalanche.
Analysis: Sami Vatanen sprung Perry on a breakaway in overtime after a great defensive play at his own blue line, leading to the game winner. However, the evening wasn't all smiles for the blue liner as he also coughed one up at the opposing blue line earlier in the night, allowing the Avs' Ryan O'Reilly to put his team up in the third. Expect Vatanen to shake off the rust and get back to being his usual self shortly.

Ducks' Vatanen Back In Lineup Friday

News: Sami Vatanen (lower body) said he will return for Friday's game against Colorado, Lance Pugmire of the LA Times reports.
Analysis: Sami Vatanen confirmed that he'll return from a month-long absence, after previously suggesting earlier in the week that he was ready to play. Clayton Stoner will likely be a healthy scratch as a result.

Ducks' Vatanen Expected Back Friday

News: Sami Vatanen (lower body) is expected to return to the lineup Friday against the Avalanche, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Analysis: Sami Vatanen has been sidelined since mid-February with the lower-body issue, but looks ready to dress. The defenseman has provided some firepower along the blue line this season, tallying 34 points (12 goals, 22 assists) in 57 games, and his return should give fantasy owners some extra help as the season winds down.

Ducks' Vatanen Likely To Remain Out Wednesday

News: Sami Vatanen (lower body) appears unlikely to play Wednesday against the Kings, NHL.com's Curtis Zupke reports.
Analysis: Sami Vatanen remained on the ice for extra work during Wednesday's morning skate, an indication the team plans to scratch him for the game. The Ducks activated the blueliner from injured reserve over the weekend, but he still seems to be in the day-to-day phase of his recovery from the injury. With another practice Thursday, Vatanen may be ready to go for Friday's match against the Avalanche.

Ducks' Vatanen Says He's Ready

News: Sami Vatanen (lower body) indicated he's ready to play if needed for Wednesday's game against the Kings, Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register reports.
Analysis: Sami Vatanen's activation from injured reserve Sunday presumably confirmed that the blueliner is feeling healthy and ready to go, but it's possible coach Bruce Boudreau feels differently. The Ducks added two new defensemen to the mix after the trade deadline in Simon Despres and James Wisniewski, and Boudreau may be reluctant to disrupt the unit's still-developing chemistry by reintroducing Vatanen right away. That being said, Vatanen's addition would give the blue line a shot in the arm offensively. Vatanen leads all of the Ducks' defensemen with 12 goals on the season.

Ducks' Vatanen Nears Return

News: Sami Vatanen (lower body) is expected to be available for Wednesday's game against the Kings, Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register reports.
Analysis: Sami Vatanen, who last suited up on Feb. 15, recorded 12 goals and 22 points in 57 games prior to his injury, and his pending return to action would provide the Ducks' power play with a boost.

Ducks Activate Vatanen

News: Sami Vatanen was activated from injured reserve Sunday, but didn't play in the win over the Predators.
Analysis: Sami Vatanen's activation signals that the blueliner is just about ready to return to action, but the Ducks kept him out of the lineup for a 14th straight game Sunday as an apparent precaution. He'll likely practice for the next couple of days with the hope of being cleared to play Wednesday against the Kings.

Ducks' Vatanen (Lower Body) Out Sunday

News: Sami Vatanen (lower body) did not take the ice for warmups before Sunday's game against the Predators, Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register reports.
Analysis: Sami Vatanen traveled with the Ducks on a recent three-game road trip but wasn't able to play in any of the contests. While he's now sitting out the first of three consecutive home games, Vatanen may be able to return before the Ducks hit the road again.

Ducks To Hold Vatanen Out Another Game

News: Sami Vatanen (lower body) will not play Friday against the Wild, Helene Elliott of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Analysis: Sami Vatanen was said to be close to a return after traveling with the Ducks on their three-game road trip earlier this week, but it doesn't look as though he'll suit up in any of those contests. Even so, Vatanen isn't believed to have hit any setbacks in his recovery, and may only need a couple more practices before the team green lights his return to the lineup. He could be an option when the Ducks head back to Anaheim on Sunday for a pivotal match against their Western Conference co-leaders in the Predators.

Ducks' Vatanen To Remain Out Wednesday

News: Sami Vatanen (lower body) won't play Wednesday against the Flames.
Analysis: Sami Vatanen is traveling with the team on its current three-game road trip and seems to be progressing toward a return to the lineup, but he'll remain out for at least another game. If Vatanen is able to log a full practice Thursday, he could merit consideration for a lineup spot in Friday's tilt with the Wild.

Ducks' Vatanen (Lower Body) Traveling With Team

News: Sami Vatanen (lower body) will travel to Canada for Monday's game in Vancouver and Wednesday's game in Calgary, Lance Pugmire of the LA Times reports.
Analysis: The news is a bit surprising, as Sami Vatanen isn't expected back until late March. It may be that he actually has a shot to return within the next week, but it's also quite possible that he's just traveling with the team to work with trainers or stay mentally prepared.

Ducks' Vatanen (Leg) Still Targeting Late March

News: Sami Vatanen (leg) has not experienced any setbacks, and he is still targeting a return in late March, Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register reports.
Analysis: Sami Vatanen skated Thursday, and while he still has quite a ways to go, there haven't been any discouraging signs. The Ducks are dealing with a bunch of injuries along the blueline right now, so Vatanen's eventual return will surely be welcome.

Ducks' Vatanen Out 4-To-6 Weeks With LBI

News: Sami Vatanen was ruled out Tuesday for 4-to-6 weeks with a lower-body injury, Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register reports.
Analysis: Fortunately for the young blueliner, he didn't sustain any sort of fracture and won't require surgery after being forced out of Sunday's game with the injury, but his loss puts fantasy owners in a major bind. Sami Vatanen had compiled 12 goals and 34 points in 57 games, with 17 of those points coming on the power play. While Vatanen should be fully healthy for the Ducks before the playoffs, his absence for a sizable chunk of what remains with the regular season will likely make him a reasonable roster drop in most formats. Eric Brewer and Josh Manson should stand to see increased ice time in Vatanen's stead, but neither presents enough offensive upside to warrant much interest.

Ducks Place Vatanen On IR

News: Sami Vatanen (lower body) was placed on injured reserve Tuesday.
Analysis: With Sami Vatanen staring at a 4-to-6-week absence, the Ducks moved quickly to stash him on IR and fill his roster spot. Josh Manson was recalled from AHL Norfolk in a corresponding move.

Ducks' Vatanen Suffers Lower Body Injury

News: Sami Vatanen left Sunday's game against the Capitals with a lower body injury.
Analysis: The injury limited Sami Vatanen to just 5:22 of ice time, as he left in the first period and was unable to return. If he can't play in Wednesday's game against Tampa Bay, Eric Brewer will likely join the lineup.

Ducks' Vatanen Snipes 11th In Win

News: Sami Vatanen sniped his 11th goal of the season in Thursday's 5-2 win over the Predators.
Analysis: Sami Vatanen continues to pace all Ducks blueliners and ranks tied for 13th in the NHL with 32 points. The 23-year-old has recorded two goals and two assists over his last seven games.

Ducks' Vatanen Adds Assist Tuesday

News: Sami Vatanen added an assist to his ledger in Tuesday's win over the Canucks.
Analysis: Sami Vatanen has been one of the league's most productive blueliners on the power-play with six goals and 10 assists on the man advantage, but it's his lack of even-strength production that has weighed down his plus/minus rating compared to other players on the Ducks. He's at least shown some signs of reversing that trend lately, going a collective plus-8 over the last six games, with two of his four of his points during that stretch coming at 5-on-5 play.

Ducks' Vatanen Picks Up Assist, Scores In Shootout

News: Sami Vatanen picked up an assist and scored the shootout winner Sunday against Winnipeg.
Analysis: The assist came on the power play, where Sami Vatanen has registered 15 of his 27 points this season. While he's struggled with some consistency issues of late, the 23-year-old is still on pace for a 17-goal, 50-point season. Playing on the first power-play unit and averaging 22:12 of ice time, the youngster has become an elite fantasy defenseman. He should be owned in almost all leagues.

Ducks' Vatanen Snaps Pointless Streak

News: Sami Vatanen snapped a six-game pointless streak with two assists in a 4-3 win over St. Louis on Friday.
Analysis: Vatanan's two-assist effort puts him back on track and gives him 26 points in 40 games this season. The 23-year-old former fourth-round pick has already set a new career-high in points this season and the sky's the limit. Like any young defenseman he'll have his bouts with inconsistency but he's the Ducks' best power play quarterback. He'll get his ice time regardless and worth owning in most formats.

Ducks' Vatanen Piles On Two More Points

News: Sami Vatanen sniped a goal and added an assist while firing off four shots on goal in Friday's 4-2 win over the Ducks.
Analysis: What better way to cure a three-game pointless drought than a date with the lowly Oilers? Sami Vatanen now impressively has 23 points, 22 PIM and 49 SOG in 31 games this year, making him the fourth highest-scoring blueliner in the league. We won't say the production has completely come out of nowhere, but the young Finn really has taken a major leap forward in his third NHL season. Enjoy.

Ducks' Vatanen Dynamite In Victory

News: Sami Vatanen tallied his seventh goal of the season in Wednesday's shootout win over the Flyers.
Analysis: The young blueliner had a dynamite evening, finishing with a team-leading five shots over 26:12 of ice time. His 21 points on the season match his entire output from 2013-14, though he required 21 fewer games to reach that mark.
