Coyotes' Sauer (Head): Likely Sidelined For Entire Season

News: Sauer (head) is not expected to play this season, the Coyotes' official site reports.
Analysis: According to the team's official site, Sauer was limited to just one game last season due to "whiplash-like symptoms." He is, however, listed on the training camp roster. Fortunately, the 'Yotes still have solid blueline producers in Keith Yandle and Ed Jovanovski, to name a few.

Sauer still not back Saturday

News: Coyotes D Kurt Sauer (upper body) did not return to the lineup Saturday against the Bruins. He has missed the last six games and remains questionable for Thursday against the Red Wings.
Analysis: Sauer always seems to be bothered by some ailment and that has been one of the greatest setbacks in his career. Sauer has minimal offensive talent when healthy and is mostly on the ice for his defense. Sauer is best used in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for short-handed stats when healthy.

Sauer finally scores first goal

News: The Sports Xchange reports Coyotes D Kurt Sauer scored a goal during Saturday's game against the Sharks. It was his first goal in 60 games this season and his first in 109 games dating to Oct. 18, 2007, when he scored for Colorado against Calgary.
Analysis: One is Sauer's lucky number. Sauer has scored one goal in five of his seven NHL seasons -- he had zero in the other two. So while the odds are against him, Sauer has seven games left to "shoot" for a career high of two goals. "I guess lightning strikes. It was fun that way, but it's kind of bittersweet when we don't get two points," he said. Sauer is best used in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for short-handed stats when healthy.

Sauer activated off IR

News: The Coyotes activated defenseman Kurt Sauer from injured reserve Monday. He had been out since Jan. 10 with a lower body injury.
Analysis: Sauer was expected to miss a couple of more weeks, but the team has been in a tailspin ever since he went down and really needed his defensive presence. Sauer is best used in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for short-handed stats when healthy.

Sauer still a couple weeks away

News: NHL.com reports Coyotes D Kurt Sauer skated Monday for the second time since sustaining a lower-body injury on Jan. 10. Sauer is still at least a couple of weeks from returning to game action.
Analysis: Phoenix would like to get Sauer back shortly since they have really struggled since he has gone down. He is not an overpowering offensive player, but is one of the team's best defenders. Sauer is best used in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for short-handed stats when healthy.

Sauer (lower body) out for a month

News: Coyotes defenseman Kurt Sauer suffered a lower body injury during the third period of Saturday night's victory over Dallas and is expected to miss the next four weeks. "It is a big blow for us," Coyotes GM Don Maloney said Sunday. "But it will open up an opportunity for someone else to step in and play well." Maloney said the Coyotes would not recall a defenseman from San Antonio, their top affiliate. That means defensemen David Hale and Keith Yandle, who have been in and out of the lineup in the past couple of weeks as healthy scratches, will play every game.
Analysis: Sauer has been a key shut-down defenseman for the Coyotes in his first season with the team. He has chipped in four assists in 43 games and is at plus-1. He has never really been an offensive savvy player and has little to no Fantasy value when healthy. He does have Fantasy value in leagues that reward heavily for short-handed stats.

Sauer plays in 300th NHL game

News: Coyotes D Kurt Sauer played his 300th NHL game Saturday against the Panthers. He was a plus-1 in 19 minutes on the ice. He doesn't have a point in eight games.
Analysis: Sauer signed a four-year deal with Phoenix in the offseason after spending the previous four with Colorado. He has never really been an offensive savvy player and has little to no Fantasy value.

Sauer lands deal with Phoenix

News: The Phoenix Coyotes signed free agents Todd Fedoruk and Kurt Sauer on Tuesday along with first-round draft picks Mikkel Boedker and Viktor Tikhonov. Fedoruk, a 29-year-old left wing, was signed to a three-year deal while Sauer, a 27-year-old defenseman, got a four-year deal, said Coyotes general manager Don Maloney, who did not divulge financial terms.
Analysis: Sauer's signing filled a gap created when the Coyotes sent defensemen Keith Ballard and Nick Boynton to the Florida Panthers in a draft-day trade for center Olli Jokinen. Sauer had one goal and five assists last season for the Colorado Avalanche. The Coyotes don't generate a lot of offense from their defenseman and Sauer has little to no Fantasy value heading into 2008-09.

Coyotes sign D Sauer

News: The Phoenix Coyotes signed veteran D Kurt Sauer to a four-year contract Tuesday, filling a gap created when they sent a pair of defenders to the Florida Panthers in a draft-day trade for Olli Jokinen.
Analysis: Sauer, 27, played for the Colorado Avalanche last season, and had a goal and five assists in 54 regular-season games. He added a goal in 10 postseason contests with Colorado. In six NHL seasons with Anaheim and the Avalanche, Sauer has four goals and 22 assists in 288 regular-season games. He should continue to be ignored in all Fantasy formats, but could find a larger role in Phoenix, so keep an eye on him over the first couple of weeks once the season starts.

Sauer back in Colorado lineup

News: Kurt Sauer made his long awaited return to the Avalanche lineup on Wednesday when he played 25 minutes against the Anaheim Ducks. He also throwed his body around with four hits and finishes at plus-1. Sauer suffered a neck injury on Nov. 30 during a 3-2 loss in San Jose. The 27-year-old stay-at-home defenseman has posted one goal and six points in 24 games he played in this season.
Analysis: When healthy, Sauer is a low-end Fantasy option best used in leagues that reward heavily for plus/minus ratings.

News: The Colorado Avalanche activated defenseman Kurt Sauer from injured reserve on Thursday. Sauer suffered a neck injury on Nov. 30 during a 3-2 loss in San Jose. The 27-year-old stay-at-home defenseman has posted one goal and six points in 24 games this season, and is tied with Paul Stastny for the team lead in plus-minus, at plus-11.

News: Avs D Kurt Sauer skated on his own Tuesday morning, but had to leave the ice early after experiencing dizziness following some twirling, circular patterns on the ice, according to the Denver Post. Sauer has been out since Nov. 30 with whiplash and possible concussion symptoms.
Analysis: When healthy, Sauer is a low-end Fantasy option best used in leagues that reward heavily for plus/minus ratings. It doesn't seem like he will return any time soon.

Sauer remains sidelined

News: Captain Joe Sakic missed his 12th straight game Sunday because of a groin injury, and Tyler Arnason (wrist), Brad Richardson (shoulder) and Kurt Sauer (neck) also are on the injured list, which has forced the team to poach from the AHL.
Analysis: When healthy, Sauer is a low-end Fantasy option best used in leagues that reward heavily for plus/minus ratings.

Sauer placed on injured reserve

News: The Colorado Avalanche recalled forward Brad Richardson from AHL Lake Erie on Sunday and placed defenseman Kurt Sauer on injured reserve because of a neck injury. Sauer injured himself Friday at San Jose. He had a goal and five assists in 24 games, but also has a plus-11 rating.
Analysis: Sauer already has matched his career high for points in a season with six, which he collected in 2003-04 and last year. To say that Sauer is in the midst of a career year would be stating the obvious. The Avalanche are keeping him out on the ice for about 18 minutes per game and the fifth-year defender is responding. Too bad now he is forced out of the lineup because of injury. When healthy, he is a low-end Fantasy option best used in leagues that reward heavily for plus/minus ratings.

Analysis: To say that Sauer is in the midst of a career year would be stating the obvious. The Avalanche are keeping him out on the ice for about 18 minutes per game and the fifth-year defender is responding. He remains a low-end Fantasy option at this time.

Sauer ends scoreless streak

News: LW Andrew Brunette, D Kurt Sauer and RW Marek Svatos each picked up goals in Tuesday's game against the Flames. Brunette and Sauer posted even ratings, while Svatos was good for a plus-1.
Analysis: Brunette and Svatos remain must-starts in all Fantasy leagues, while Sauer is only worth a look in the deepest of formats. The Avalanche will be back in action on Friday in Chicago. The point was Sauer's first of the season after going scoreless in the first five.
