News: Flames G Vesa Toskala relieved an ineffective Miikka Kiprusoff in Saturday's 7-3 loss to the Canucks. Toskala allowed one goal on eight shots.
Analysis: Toskala is an unrestricted free agent this summer and isn't likely to want to stick around in Calgary as a little-used backup behind The Kipper. His Fantasy value will vary greatly depending on where he ends up, but we can't see him as being anything more than a low-end No. 2 Fantasy option at best.
News: Flames G Vesa Toskala stopped all six shots he faced Saturday after relieving an ineffective Miikka Kiprusoff in the third period of a 5-0 loss to the Bruins.
Analysis: The more we see of Toskala this season, the less chance the Flames have of making the playoffs. Things are getting down to the wire for Calgary at this point, and they'll have to rely on Kiprusoff in pretty much every game until they're mathematically eliminated.
News: Flames coach Brent Sutter threw backup netminder Vesa Toskala a start Sunday against the Wild in place of Miikka Kiprusoff, who was given the day off. Unfortunately, Toskala didn't finish the game in net. Chuck Kobasew's goal at 3:05 of the second period made the score 3-1 and ended Toskala's day. He stopped nine of the 12 shots he faced but failed to hold a 1-0 lead. Miikka Kiprusoff allowed one goal on nine shots the rest of the way, but he took the loss as Calgary scored three times to get Toskala off the hook.
Analysis: Toskala had won in his first two starts with the Flames and even had a solid relief performance on March 14 against the Canucks. But he fell back into a bad routine on Sunday and was yanked early in the game. Toskala is getting more playing time than the Flames' previous backup netminder, Curtis McElhinney, but he still has marginal Fantasy appeal as a backup goalie. The Flames TG is a No. 1 option because of Kipper.
News: The Flames gave G Vesa Toskala a 3-0 lead Wednesday, and the veteran netminder made it stick, as Calgary held on to beat the Avalanche 3-2. Toskala turned away 32 shots on goal.
Analysis: Toskala is now 2-0 with 4 goals allowed in three appearances for Calgary. But behind Miikka Kiprusoff, Toskala is merely a handcuff for Fantasy owners. The Flames TG is a solid No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: Flames G Vesa Toskala relieved Miikka Kiprusoff after one period of Sunday's 3-1 loss to the Canucks. Toskala made eight saves and didn't allow a goal.
Analysis: Toskala is a very capable backup goalie for Calgary and might see a few starts here and there down the stretch in relief of Kiprusoff. He still remains only worth using as a handcuff for Kipper's Fantasy owners, however.
News: Calgary G Vesa Toskala allowed two second-period goals on Sunday against the Minnesota Wild and watched as his teammates scored five goals on the afternoon to win 5-2. Toskala stopped 27 of 29 shots on the game.
Analysis: Toskala was making his first start in net since being traded twice from the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Anaheim Ducks to the Flames and he snapped a four-start losing streak with the win on Sunday and his record improves to 8-12-3 on the year. Sunday's was by far his best effort in a while. Still, he doesn't figure to see the net a whole lot in Calgary. He is just a low-end Fantasy handcuff. The Flames TG is a solid No. 1 Fantasy option.
News: The Flames have traded G Curtis McElhinney to Anaheim for G Vesa Toskala.
Analysis: McElhinney has played in 29 games over the last three seasons as the backup to Miikka Kiprusoff. His 3.23 GAA isn't exactly great, so should only be a handcuff for Jonas Hiller owners in the deepest of formats. Toskala didn't play in a game for Anaheim after coming over in the Dion Phaneuf deal. He won't play much in Calgary either, and, like McElhinney, will only be a handcuff option at best.
News: The Ducks' official web site reports that Ducks G Vesa Toskala finally arrived in Anaheim over the weekend after getting his immigration issues sorted out.
Analysis: Toskala will back up the red-hot Jonas Hiller the rest of the season and his starts are likely to be limited to once a week at most. He will only be worth owning as a handcuff to Hiller for the time being. The Ducks TG is a No. 2 option at worst.
News: The Ducks' official web site reports that G Vesa Toskala has yet to join his new team because of immigration issues. The team has called up another former Maple Leaf, Justin Pogge, to cover for him.
Analysis: Toskala's career has been on the decline the last few seasons, mostly due to injuries. He was 7-12-3 with a 3.66 GAA and .874 save percentage in 26 games this season. The good news is that Toskala will be playing for a better team, so when he does get in net his chances of winning are greatly enhanced. Still, as a backup, he remains just a low-end Fantasy flier unless something happens to Jonas Hiller. The Ducks TG is no worse than a No. 2 option.
News: The Toronto Maple Leafs shook up their struggling club, acquiring defenseman Dion Phaneuf from the Calgary Flames in a seven-player deal Sunday and swapping goalies with Anaheim to get Jean-Sebastien Giguere. The veteran Giguere had to waive his no-trade clause for the trade to be completed. "He wanted to come here," Toronto GM Brian Burke said. "When I spoke to him, he was excited." Along with Phaneuf, Toronto received Keith Aulie and Fredrik Sjostrom from Calgary in exchange for Ian White, Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman and Jamal Mayers. The Maple Leafs also traded goalie Vesa Toskala and Jason Blake to Anaheim for Giguere.
Analysis: Toskala recently became a backup in Toronto and nothing will change now that he is in Anaheim. Jonas Hiller is the current and future in Anaheim after signing a four-year contract extension on Saturday. Toskala's career has been on the decline the last few seasons, mostly due to injuries. He was 7-12-3 with a 3.66 GAA and .874 save percentage in 26 games this season. The good news is that Toskala will be playing for a better team, so when he does get in net his chances of winning are greatly enhanced. Still, he remains just a low-end Fantasy flier unless something happens to Hiller. The Ducks TG is no worse than a No. 2 option.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala took a 3-1 lead into the third period on Saturday against the Canucks, but couldn't hold on as the Canucks scored four times in the final 20 minutes to win 5-3. The final Vancouver goal was an empty-netter.
Analysis: Toskala has now dropped four straight decisions and isn't making the Toronto management think twice about deciding to go with Jonas Gustavsson ahead of him in the second half. Continue to ignore Toskala in the majority of Fantasy formats, while the Maple Leafs TG should also be avoided.
News: Maple Leafs G Jonas Gustavsson made 16 saves on Friday against the Devils before being pulled in the second period in favor of Vesa Toskala. Gustavsson was yanked after giving up a one-goal lead and allowing New Jersey to build a 3-1 cushion. Toskala provided a spark for Toronto, who tied the game at 4 in the third period to force overtime. Travis Zajac then won the game 4:14 into overtime for New Jersey as it was on a power play. Toskala finished with 10 saves, including seven during a scoreless third, as he picked up the loss.
Analysis: Gustavsson is winless in his last four starts and hasn't exactly done well since coach Ron Wilson anointed him the starter for the rest of the season. Still, Toskala doesn't appear to have a future in Toronto, so Gustavsson should see most of the starts down the stretch. Toskala, who has lost three straight appearances, would benefit from a trade out of town. Until something positive happens for Toskala, he has low-end Fantasy appeal.
News:The Toronto Star reports Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson said Thursday he intends to use goalie Jonas Gustavsson as much as possible over the final 31 games. Gustavsson has been splitting time with Vesa Toskala for most of the season. "I'd like to use Jonas more," he said. "But it's tough with the schedule the way it is. I'm not going to kill the poor guy."
Analysis: Gustavsson, who has been bothered by groin and heart issues in his rookie season, has played 27 games to Toskala's 24. Although, he has started six times already in January. Gustavsson is also scheduled to be Sweden's backup goalie behind Henrik Lundqvist at the Winter Olympics in February. "I don't want him to be Dead Man Walking by the Olympics," Wilson said. "He's not going to get a break like the other guys. He's still learning his craft. He's had a lot on his plate, and I'm just trying to manage him as best I can." The way General Manager Brian Burke raves about Gustavsson, it's clear he is the future in net and Toskala, who is set to become a free agent, is on his way out the door. Gustavsson could be a Fantasy sleeper down the stretch, but the wins could be scare because Toronto is still a weak team. Toskala remains a low-end Fantasy option.
News: Toronto G Vesa Toskala could not hold off the Thrashers on Tuesday as he fell to Atlanta, 4-3. Toskala stopped 28 shots on Tuesday against the Thrashers but the two goals he allowed in the 2nd and the two he allowed in the 3rd were enough for the defeat.
Analysis: Toskala lost for the second straight start and is now just 1-3-0 in four January turns in net. His overall record on the year is 7-11-2 for the Maple Leafs and his saves percentage is well below 90 percent. Toskala has been down right awful since last season and has dropped to being a risky Fantasy start. The Maple Leafs TG remains a low-end option as well.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala, who blanked Philadelphia just 24 hours earlier in Toronto, yielded a goal on the first shot he faced and fell to 7-10-2 during a 6-1 loss to the Capitals on Friday. Toskala allowed two power-play goals and made 18 saves. He lost for the fifth time in seven starts.
Analysis: Toskala clearly showed he couldn't handle back-to-back games on Friday. That means Jonas Gustavsson is going to get another crack in net. Toskala has been down right awful since last season and has dropped to being a risky Fantasy start. The Maple Leafs TG remains a low-end option as well.
News:Vesa Toskala made 38 saves for his first shutout since October 2008, Tyler Bozak scored his first NHL goal and the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-0 on Thursday night. Toskala made at least 11 saves in each period and came up big in the third, stopping 15 shots.
Analysis: Toskala has won just twice in his last six outings, so you know he needed a big performance. He hasn't allowed more than three goals in four straight outings and could finally be ready to turn the corner. He still is battling Jonas Gustavsson for time in net, so it is going to take a long stretch of wins for Toskala to become the unquestioned starter. He remains a low-end Fantasy flier until further notice. The Maple Leafs TG remains a low-end option as well.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala made 28 saves during a 3-2 loss to the Sabres on Friday. Buffalo built a 3-0 lead against Toronto before the Maple Leafs staged a rally in the third. Toskala made nine saves during a scoreless third period, but it was too little, too late. He lost for the fourth time in five outings.
Analysis: It has just been a tough road for Toskala the last two seasons. Aside from dealing with a rash of injuries, he is also not playing very well when in net. This season he has to compete with Jonas Gustavsson, so it's not like Toskala is starting every night. He remains a low-end Fantasy flier until further notice. The Maple Leafs TG remains a low-end option as well.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala made 20 saves during a 3-1 loss to the Oilers on Wednesday. Toskala allowed a goal in each period and a pair of power-play scores to Patrick O'Sullivan. He lost for the third time in four starts.
Analysis: The Maple Leafs don't really have a steady situation in net right now. They continue to flip between Toskala and Jonas Gustavsson. It seems coach Ron Wilson is going on the win, you're in philosophy. Toskala remains more of a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game until further notice. The Maple Leafs TG remains a low-end option.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala made 21 saves Sunday as Toronto edged the Penguins 4-3.
Analysis: Toskala has been letting in goals all over the place in December and is clearly the less-favored choice in Toronto behind Jonas Gustavsson at the moment. Only use Toskala in the deepest of average-point leagues, while the Leafs TG remains a No. 2 option.
News: The Toronto Globe & Mail reports that Maple Leafs G Jonas Gustavsson will start in goal Monday vs. Buffalo.
Analysis: Gustavsson claimed his first NHL shutout on Saturday night, and The Monster will be looking to build on that outing as he tries to take the No. 1 job in Toronto for his own. Start him in deeper leagues as a low-end No. 2 option for Fantasy Week 12 (Dec. 21-27), but remember he's not guaranteed any specific amount of starts. The Leafs TG remains a No.2 option for now.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala, making his seventh straight start, was pulled after allowing four second-period goals on six shots during a 5-2 loss to the Sabres on Friday. He finished with six saves before giving way to Jonas Gustavsson, who gave up a goal on 17 shots in his first appearance since undergoing a heart procedure in early December.
Analysis: Toskala has lost his last two starts and has allowed nine goals in the process. He was playing well for a bit, but these last two starts likely gives way to Gustavsson getting some starts in net. Toskala remains more of a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game until further notice. The Maple Leafs TG remains a low-end option.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala made 23 saves during a 6-3 loss to the Coyotes on Wednesday. Toskala never led in the game and trailed 2-0 and 5-1 before settling down late in the second period. Toronto cut the deficit to 5-3 before Radim Vrbata iced the win with an empty-net score. Toskala had a two-game win streak snapped.
Analysis: Toskala has been playing so well as of late, it was really tough to see him revert to his old ways on Wednesday. Hopefully, he doesn't settle back into a rut since Jonas Gustavsson is nearing a return to the lineup. Toskala remains more of a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game until further notice. The Maple Leafs TG remains a low-end option.
News: While Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala wasn't exactly swarmed by the Senators, he made 22 saves in continuing a recent stretch of strong play during a 3-2 win on Monday. According to Leafs coach Ron Wilson, timely stops like the one Toskala made to stuff Milan Michalek early in the game on a partial breakaway make all the difference. "Vesa has done a great job recently and before Vesa, Jonas [Gustavsson] was making some big saves," Wilson said. "It's huge when you start to trust your goaltender, other things start to fall into place, you get more offensive opportunities. The defensemen aren't worried about making mistakes and, thereby, don't make as many, generally."
Analysis: Toskala has won four of his last five starts and has allowed more than three goals only once in that span -- the loss. He has really stepped up with Gustavsson sidelined and is making a claim to nab the starting netminder job. Gustavsson (heart) is returning soon and will likely still be a factor, so Toskala remains more of a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game until further notice. The Maple Leafs TG remains a low-end option.
News: AM640 reports that Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala will start in goal Monday vs. Ottawa.
Analysis: Toskala's backup, Jonas Gustavsson, is getting closer to a return and could get one or two starts in Fantasy Week 11 (Dec. 14-20) if he's healthy enough. With Toronto playing four times in the scoring period, you should feel safe in starting Toskala as a low-end No. 2 option in super-deep leagues if need be. The Leafs TG is starting to rise up the rankings a bit and is also a low-end No. 2 option in large formats.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala made 34 saves Saturday as Toronto came back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Capitals 6-3.
Analysis: Toskala has been facing a ton of shots in his last three games, but has managed to win two of those three outings and is helping Toronto dig their way out of an early hole this season. He will lose a few starts soon once Jonas Gustavsson is healthy, so Toskala is only worth using as a high-end No. 3 option for now, but the potential is there for him to be a No. 2. The Leafs TG is also a low-end choice for the time being.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala made 29 saves during a 5-2 loss against the Bruins on Thursday. Toskala trailed by three goals after two periods, but Toronto scored twice in the first five minutes of the third period to close the gap to 1. Mark Recchi then scored twice in the final three minutes, including an empty netter, as Boston pulled away from Toskala and Toronto. The loss snapped a two-game win streak for Toskala.
Analysis: Toskala won his first two starts of Week 10 (Dec. 7-13) before Boston got the best of him again. Toskala came off IR on Saturday and made a relief appearance against the Bruins, but he allowed three goals on 10 shots. He hasn't looked overly rusty since returning and that's good news for Toronto with Jonas Gustavsson (heart) injured again. Gustavsson is close to returning, so Toskala remains a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Maple Leafs TG is a low-end Fantasy option.
News: Toronto G Vesa Toskala had a solid performance on Wednesday and ended up with a 3-2 win over the Islanders. Toskala made 30 saves in the game and allowed two third period goals. Toskala's record improved to 3-4-2 on the season with the win.
Analysis: Toskala has won each of the team's past two games, allowing two goals in each outing. With Jonas Gustavsson now on the IR with a heart issue, Toskala has a chance to get some starting opportunities. However, he remains just a low-end Fantasy option until he can win with some consistency. The Maple Leafs TG is also a low-end Fantasy unit.
News:Vesa Toskala made 22 saves in his first start since Nov. 23 and Alexei Ponikarovsky scored goals 28 seconds apart on Monday night as the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Atlanta Thrashers 5-2. Toskala held a shutout until Bryan Little scored on the power play 6:48 into the third. Marty Reasoner scored less than a minute later, but Toskala finally found his composure to earn his first win since Nov. 21.
Analysis: In past years, this win wouldn't look as impressive. But Atlanta has been one of the highest scoring teams in 2009-10 and Toskala looked sharp in his first start since returning from a groin injury. With Jonas Gustavsson on IR again with a heart issue, Toskala has a chance to step up and impress Toronto management. He remains a low-end Fantasy start until he shows long-term success. The Maple Leafs TG is also a low-end option.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala (groin) came off IR to relieve an ineffective Joey MacDonald in Saturday's 7-2 loss to the Bruins. Toskala stopped seven of the 10 shots he faced.
Analysis: With Jonas Gustavsson (heart) out for probably a couple of weeks, Toskala could get plenty of action over the next two scoring periods. If you're in a deeper league and struggling for starts at the goalie spot, then Toskala might be worth a look. Of course, the Leafs aren't great, Toskala has a habit of getting hurt and he could share starts with MacDonald, but there are worse options out there. The Leafs TG remains a low-end No. 2 option for now.
News: AM640 out of Toronto reports that Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala (groin) is likely to come off IR and make a Saturday start at Boston.
Analysis: With Jonas Gustavsson (heart) out for probably a couple of weeks, Toskala could get plenty of action over the next two scoring periods. If you're in a deeper league and struggling for starts at the goalie spot, then Toskala might be worth a look. Of course, the Leafs aren't great, Toskala has a habit of getting hurt and he could share starts with Joey MacDonald, but there are worse options out there. The Leafs TG remains a low-end No. 2 option for now.
News: The Toronto Star reports that Maple Leafs G Jonas Gustavsson is going to have another procedure performed on his heart later this week. Gustavsson, who had minor surgery on his heart in training camp, is expected to miss anywhere from 2-3 weeks.
Analysis: Hopefully the docs can figure out what's wrong with The Monster's heart, as the Leafs' goalie situation is a complete mess right now. Vesa Toskala is already out hurt, so it looks like Joey MacDonald will fill in between the pipes for now. He will be nothing more than a No. 3 option for the time being, while Gustavsson should be stashed away in deeper leagues until later this month.
News: The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed goalie Vesa Toskala and forward John Mitchell on injured reserve and recalled goalie Joey MacDonald and forward Christian Hanson on Tuesday. Jonas Gustavsson is expected to resume the starting duties for Toronto with Toskala sidelined.
Analysis: Toskala, who had to leave Monday's game against the Islanders after tweaking a groin injury, has a 1-4-2 mark with a 3.91 GAA and .865 save percentage. Toskala already spent time on IR this season with a knee injury and has watched a lot of games from the press box since last season due to various injuries. It has been the downfall of his career. This latest setback could be devastating, especially if Gustavsson does well in his absence. Toskala is nothing more than a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game when healthy. The Maple Leafs TG has low-end Fantasy appeal.
News: The Maple Leafs used two goalies during Monday's 4-3 overtime loss to the Islanders. Vesa Toskala started the game but was pulled in the second period. Toskala pulled himself from the game because he aggravated a groin injury. "Just a little tweak," he said. "Hopefully, it doesn't take too long (to feel better)." Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson sent Jonas Gustavsson in for Toskala shortly after Phil Kessel's goal 15:32 into the middle frame. Toskala went straight to the dressing room after getting pulled before returning to the end of the bench for the third period. Gustavsson didn't allow a goal until Josh Bailey scored with less than a minute left in overtime. Bailey scored 4:18 into overtime, taking a pass from Sean Bergenheim and slamming the puck into an open net. Toskala made 12 saves on 15 shots, while Gustavsson had five saves.
Analysis: We aren't surprised Toskala has another injury because he has had plenty since the 2008-09 season. He has even missed time this season with a knee ailment. Toskala is under a lot of pressure in Toronto for another bad start. From a Fantasy standpoint, we wish Toskala never let San Jose since he was actually a solid option back in the day. Now, he is nothing more than a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game. The Maple Leafs TG has low-end Fantasy appeal.
News: Toronto C Vesa Toskala was able to beat the Captials in a shootout on Saturday 2-1. He blocked both of the shots he faced in the shootout, making 31 saves in the game and allowing just one goal. It was Toskala's first win of the season.
Analysis: Toskala continues to split time with Jonas Gustavsson and it took seven appearances for him to do so. He has been getting more starts of late but is still not a recommended Fantasy option as the Maple Leafs have struggled to get wins all year. The Toronto TG is a low-end Fantasy option.
News: Toronto G Vesa Toskala could not stop the Senators on Tuesday night during the 2nd period. Toskala took the loss in the game, 3-2, as he allowed two goals to score in the 2nd with the Maple Leafs clinging to a 2-1 lead. He stopped 18 shots on the night but allowed three and that was the difference.
Analysis: Toskala has still yet to win this season and is now 0-4-2 on the year. He has made three straight appearances and two starts and has allowed eight goals over that span. Toskala splits time with Jonas Gustavsson. You're better off leaving both Leafs goalies for just deeper leagues until one emerges as the No. 1. The Toronto TG remains just a low-end option.
News: AM640 out of Toronto reports that Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala will get the start on Tuesday at Ottawa.
Analysis: Toronto plays three times in Fantasy Week 7 (Nov. 16-22), but none of the games are back-to-back, which means it's no guarantee whether Toskala or Jonas Gustavsson will be the goalie who gets two starts. You're better off leaving both Leafs goalies for just deeper leagues until one emerges as the No. 1. The Toronto TG remains just a low-end option.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala relieved an ineffective Jonas Gustavsson in Saturdays 5-2 loss to the Flames. Toskala allowed two goals on 17 shots.
Analysis: Toskala hasnt won a game yet this season and is playing just horrible hockey so far. Dont even think about using him in Fantasy play right now until he gets consistent starts and proves hes worth a shot in your lineup.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala made 31 saves during a 3-2 loss to the Blackhawks on Friday. Toskala never led in the game and trailed by three goals after Troy Brouwer scored on a power play 5:31 into the second. He stopped Chicago on six shots during a scoreless third period, but Toronto could not finish off the rally.
Analysis: Toskala, who battled a knee injury this year and lost time to Jonas Gustavsson, played for the first time since Oct. 31. He remains winless on the season and definitely losing favor in Toronto. Until he is back in net on a regular basis, Toskala is a low-end Fantasy option. The Maple Leafs TG is also a low-end option.
News: Toronto G Vesa Toskala got lucky to have Saturday's game against the Canadiens go to a shootout, but he did not make the most of the opportunity as he ended up with the loss. Toskala allowed both shooters he faced in the shootout to score as the Maple Leafs lost the game 5-4. Toskala and the Leafs were down to goals with less than four minutes to go in regulation but ended up scoring twice off Jaroslav Halak to send the game into overtime.
Analysis: Toskala had not started since allowing seven goals to the Rangers back on Oct. 12 as he had been on the IR with a knee injury. He came into Saturday's game with a 5.56 GAA and his record dropped to 0-2-2 on the year with the shootout loss. Toskala is just a last resort starting goalie. The Maple Leafs TG is also a low-end unit.
News: Maple Leags G Vesa Toskala was activated from injured reserve on Friday and served as a backup to Jonas Gustavsson in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Sabres. Toskala had been out since mid-October with a knee injury.
Analysis: The Maple Leafs now have a delicate situation on their hands with Toskala back in the fold. Gustavsson has been playing well in net since Toskala went on injured reserve and you have to ponder what Toronto is going to do moving forward. They will probably let the two goalies battle it out until one emerges as the starter. Consider Toskala a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or flier in leagues that use average points per game until further notice.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala did not start Saturday's game at Vancouver, as he continues to deal with a knee injury. Joey MacDonald started in his place.
Analysis: Toskala might be back soon, but he's definitely not worth a start in Fantasy Week 4 (Oct. 26-Nov. 1), as he could be No. 2 behind Jonas Gustavsson. Toskala should probably just be dropped outside of deeper leagues.
News:The Sports Xchange reports Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala "tweaked" his knee on Monday night in New York, according to coach Ron Wilson, and will be out 10 days to two weeks. Joey MacDonald will start for Toronto until either Toskala or Jonas Gustavsson (groin) return.
Analysis: Toskala had hip and groin issues that contributed to his downfall in 2008-09. Perhaps we can blame his slow start on the knee injury or we can just face the facts that Toskala has lost a step over the last few years. Toronto is really struggling right now, so even when Toskala is healthy, he has low-end Fantasy appeal. The Maple Leafs TG also has low-end appeal.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala was scratched from the lineup for Tuesday's game vs. Colorado with a knee injury he suffered on Monday night. Joey MacDonald will start in his place in his first action of the season.
Analysis: Toskala has been awful so far this season, and there have been rumors that he isn't at 100 percent. Bench Toskala in all formats for now and just cross your fingers about his long-term prognosis. Joey McDonald and the Maple Leafs TG will be low-end No. 2 Fantasy options at best while Toskala and Jonas Gustavsson recover from their respective issues.
News: The Toronto Globe and Mail reports that Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala was scratched from the lineup for Tuesday's game vs. Colorado which what is being rumored to be a knee injury. Joey MacDonald will start in his place.
Analysis: Toskala has been awful so far this season, and there have been rumors that he isn't at 100 percent. Bench Toskala in all formats for now and just cross your fingers about his long-term prognosis. McDonald and the Maple Leafs TG will be low-end No. 2 Fantasy options at best while Toskala and Jonas Gustavsson recover from their respective issues.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala made 26 saves during a 7-2 loss against the Rangers on Monday. Toskala fell behind 2-0 early in the first and only trailed 3-2 heading into the third before New York scored four unanswered goals. Toskala had been 5-0-2 with a 1.37 goals-against average versus New York while with Toronto.
Analysis: Even though Toskala is fully recovered from the injuries that plagued him in 2008-09, his performance is still severely lacking. He is winless in three starts, and if Jonas Gustavsson was healthy Monday, he might have come into the game. Toskala is still technically Toronto's starter, but he is barely holding onto that title. Toskala remains a low-end Fantasy option until he can get on track. The Maple Leafs TG also has low-end appeal.
News: Toronto G Vesa Toskala had a rough start on Saturday against the Penguins and edned up taking a 5-2 loss. Toskala allowed five goals in and made 28 saves as his record dropped to 0-1-1.
Analysis: Toskala lasted only 20 minutes in his previous start a week ago against the Capitals. He then got the night off Tuesday and followed up his poor outing last Saturday with another lackluster effort this Saturday with a 5-2 loss. Toskala's hold on the No. 1 job in Toronto is not a firm one and Fantasy owners should certainly be concerned. He remains a low-end No. 2 Fantasy option at best. The Maple Leafs TG is a low-end Fantasy unit.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala allowed three goals on eight shots Saturday night and was pulled after 20 minutes of a 6-4 loss to the Capitals on Saturday. He was replaced by Jonas Gustavsson.
Analysis: Oh dear. Toskala's owners had to have thought he might lose the No. 1 job to The Monster at some point this season, but this early? Toronto management clearly isn't going to put up with having a sub-par goalie between the pipes this season, and Toskala's Fantasy value will take a hit with this benching. Luckily, only 20 percent of you start him in Fantasy Week 1 (Oct. 1-11), but it could be a long 11 days for those folks who did take a shot with him.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala made 23 saves during Thursday's opener against the Canadiens, but couldn't make the key stop on Josh Gorges' game-winning goal 4:47 into overtime. Gorges batted a rebound over Toskala after Mike Cammalleri took the puck hard to the net. Toskala held a 3-2 lead in the third period before Glen Metropolit tied the game on a power-play score at 15:50.
Analysis: Toskala, who is coming off major hip surgery, really could have used a win over Montreal to keep the critics at bay. If he gets off to a slow start, the Toronto faithful will be calling for The Monster -- Jonas Gustavsson -- and that could only further dilute Toskala's already shaky Fantasy appeal. The Maple Leafs TG has low-end Fantasy appeal as well.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala (hip, groin) got the start during Wednesday's preseason game against the Bruins. Toskala allowed just a second-period power-play goal on 15 shots before being replaced by Joey MacDonald in the middle frame.
Analysis: It's nice to see Toskala in between the pipes after he endured a brutal 2008-09 season. It was pretty much brought on by injury, but Toronto added Swedish import Jonas Gustavsson in the offseason just in case Toskala is still struggling during a walk year. Toskala still remains a low-end No. 2 Fantasy goalie Draft Day, but his owners might want to grab Gustavsson as an handcuff option. The Maple Leafs TG also has low-end Fantasy appeal.
News: The Maple Leafs have landed "The Monster." Toronto has nabbed coveted Swedish free agent goalie Jonas Gustavsson with a one-year contract on Tuesday. The 24-year-old netminder, nicknamed "The Monster," was also heavily pursued by Dallas, San Jose and Colorado. "Jonas is considered by many to be the best goaltender not playing in the NHL today," Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke said in a statement. "He has a unique combination of size and agility and we're excited to add a player with his potential to our roster." The 6-foot-3 Gustavsson, expected to be the backup to Maple Leafs starting goalie Vesa Toskala, led Farjestads in the Swedish Elite League last season to a championship after allowing just 14 goals in 13 playoff games with five shutouts. "He's not coming in trying to unseat a guy who has been here a long time, has a long-term contract and has had a lot of success," Burke said. "That being said, we were very frank with Jonas that we feel Vesa is going to have a big-time, bounce-back year now that he's healthy. Don't think you're going to walk in here and knock this kid out of the net. You're going to have to do something to do that."
Analysis: Toskala played in 53 games last season with Toronto, going 22-17. He posted a 3.26 goals-against average with one shutout and .891 save percentage. But he underwent season-ending hip surgery in March and missed Toronto's final 18 regular-season games. Toskala is entering the final year of his contract with the Leafs and is slated to earn $4 million. At worst, Burke figures that Gustavsson will play behind Toskala and serve as a solid insurance policy should he get hurt again. "He's a butterfly goaltender that also has superb athletic ability and can make athletic saves," Burke said. Gustavsson registered four shutouts with a league-leading 1.96 goals-against average and a .932 save percentage in 42 games for Farjestads in 2008-09. Gustavsson also played for Sweden at the world championship, posting a 3-2 record with a 2.83 GAA and a .914 save percentage in helping his team to the bronze medal. Toskala still remains a low-end No. 2 Fantasy goalie Draft Day, but his owners might want to grab Gustavsson as an handcuff option. Gustavsson definitely has sleeper potential heading into 2009-10. Continue to treat the Maple Leafs TG as a low-end Fantasy option until Toronto turns around their fortunes.
News:The Sports Xchange reports Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala underwent hip surgery in Vail, Col., on March 9 and is expected to have less serious groin surgery at a later date. A full recovery is expected. The initial recovery time on the hip surgery was 12 weeks.
Analysis: Toskala had a very trying season in 2008-09, largely due to injury. Nonetheless, the Toronto front office is contemplating whether or not Toskala will be in their plans past the 2009-10 season -- the final year of his contract. Toronto has been hot after Swedish goalie Jonas Gustavsson and could make a serious pitch to make him their future goalie. Toskala could return as Toronto's top goalie in the fall, but until we know for sure, he is shaping up to be an injury-risk, low-end No. 2 Fantasy goalie Draft Day.
News: Maple Leafs goalie Vesa Toskala underwent season-ending hip surgery on Monday to repair a torn labrum and is expected to have a rehabilitation time of 12 weeks. The procedure was performed by Dr. Marc Philippon in Vail, Colo., the same surgeon who operated on New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez this week. The Maple Leafs, who are not in playoff contention, will finish the season with backup goalie Curtis Joseph and waiver pickup Martin Gerber sharing the starting duties down the stretch.
Analysis: Toskala has been bothered by the hip injury for most of the season, but he was playing some of his best hockey before finally calling it a season. Toskala was 7-0-5 in his last 13 appearances. Toskala didn't have a banner year with a 22-17-11 record, 3.26 GAA and .891 save percentage. Perhaps an offseason of rest will do him well. Cut Toskala in all seasonal Fantasy formats. He has minimal appeal in long-term keeper formats.
News: TSN reports that Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala is to have hip and groin surgery and is out for the rest of the season.
Analysis: Well, the whole Martin Gerber move from earlier Wednesday now makes complete sense. Toskala has been dealing with this groin issue since mid-December and has been struggling terribly as he tries to play through the problem. Toskala's keeper-league owners will be glad to see him choosing to get properly healed up, but his presence will be missed in all formats, even though he hasn't put up great numbers in 2008-09. Gerber and Curtis Joseph will fill in for Toskala the rest of the way, with both being nothing more than low-end No. 2 Fantasy options at best. The Maple Leafs TG also remains a backup option in leagues that start one TG.
News:Johnny Oduya scored on a rebound past Vesa Toskala while sliding into the crease 4:48 into overtime to help Martin Brodeur improve to 4-0 since returning from an elbow injury as the New Jersey Devils beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 on Tuesday night. Toskala made a whopping 49 saves in the loss and faced 17 shots in both the second and third periods.
Analysis: For the amount of shots Toskala faced Tuesday, the fact he allowed just three goals is almost like winning. He has really been on top of his game since a MRI cleared him of serious hip damage. Toskala is starting to play up to his potential, but still remains more of a low-end No. 2 Fantasy goalie. The Maple Leafs TG is a low-end Fantasy option.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala made 40 saves in regulation and overtime, then allowed just one goal in the shootout as Toronto rolled to a 5-4 win Thursday against the Islanders. Toskala blew a pair of two-goal leads Thursday, but managed to hang on for a third straight win -- the last two coming in shootouts.
Analysis: Toskala has managed a three-game win streak twice this season, but hasn't made it to four just yet. He came into Thursday having allowed two or fewer goals in four straight starts. His confidence has been soaring ever since a MRI cleared him of serious damage in his injured hip. Toskala has been mentioned as trade bait with the March 4 deadline looming, but if he stays with Toronto, he remains nothing more than a No. 2 Fantasy goalie. The Maple Leafs TG has low-end Fantasy appeal.
News: For the second time in a row, Vesa Toskala and the Maple Leafs were able to beat the reeling Rangers on Wednesday. This time, the win came in a shootout for Toskala who blocked all three shots he faced in the penalty shootout. Toskala made 31 saves in the game, allowing only one goal.
Analysis: Toskala ruined the debut of Rangers coach John Tortorella on Wednesday and has put his own stamp on the Rangers' recent demise. Toskala has won three of his last four starts, allowing only seven goals during that stretch. He is a low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 goalie at the moment while the Leafs TG is a low-end option.
News: Toronto G Vesa Toskala allowed a late goal to Michal Roszival in Sunday's game against the Rangers but was able to come back and get the win in overtime 3-2. Toskala made 39 saves in the game, allowing the two goals both in the third period when every regulation goal was scored in the game.
Analysis: Toskala has started 50 of the Maple Leafs' 60 games this season. He has a losing record at 20-17-10 but has made the Leafs somewhat respectable this season. He is a low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 option despite playing for the Leafs. The Leafs TG is a low-end option.
News: Toronto G Vesa Toskala looked solid during his first start in a week but ended up taking a 3-2 shootout loss to the Canucks. He stopped a long shot from Sundin in the first period and got his glove on a good power-play chance by Steve Bernier early in the second. The Toronto goalie can't be faulted for the goal that tied it at 9:49 of the second period. Sami Salo's point shot deflected off Niklas Hagman's shin pad and behind Toskala on a power play. Toskala made 35 saves in the game and received the second star in the game.
Analysis: Toskala would not ruin Mats Sundin's return to Toronto as he allowed the new Canuck to beat him in the shootout for what amounted to the game-winning shootout goal. Toskala remains only a low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 Fantasy goalie now that he's back healthy. The Maple Leafs TG is more of a low-end option.
News:The Globe and Mail reports Maple Leafs goalie Vesa Toskala said Thursday he is returning to net Saturday against the Canucks, but refused to talk about the MRI results on his sore hip. Toskala served as Justin Pogge's backup for the second consecutive game Thursday against the Blue Jackets, and while he wouldn't fully divulge the prognosis of his medical test, he did say the results put him at ease. "That was information for me and I don't see any reason to tell you," the goaltender told a crowd of reporters Thursday. "I went to get an MRI to get more information and I got more information, so that was good."
Analysis: Toskala has been under a lot of fire recently from GM Brian Burke and coach Ron Wilson for his poor play in 2008-09. He is 19-17-9 with a 3.38 GAA and .883 save percentage. His GAA and save percentage rank near the bottom for starting goalies. Toskala has somewhat blamed his performance on the hip injury, but Toronto stands behind him for the time being. There has been talk of moving him before the March 4 trade deadline, but if Toskala remains with Toronto, he is at best a low-end No. 2 Fantasy goalie. The Maple Leafs TG still has low-end Fantasy appeal as well.
News: Toronto G Vesa Toskala was on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline heading into the third period of Saturday's game against the Penguins. That deficit was quickly erased by two Jason Blake goals and he went on to take a 6-2 win over the Penguins as his team scored five third period goals.
Analysis: Toskala made 25 saves in the game and his record improved to 19-17-9 on the season. He has had some pretty terrible performances lately but the Maple Leafs skaters have bailed him out a few times. He can only be thought of as a low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 Fantasy goalie despite starting most games for Toronto. The Maple Leafs TG is a low-end option.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala didn't even last one period during Thursday's 6-4 loss to the Lightning. Toskala actually held the Lightning off the scoreboard for the first 12:30 of the game and had a 1-0 lead before Tampa scored four times during a four-minute stretch. Toskala was pulled after Martin St. Louis' power-play goal 16:43 into the period. Curtis Joseph replaced him and kept the game close until Tampa Bay scored twice in the first 13:28 of the third period. Joseph took the loss while making 17 saves and Toskala was credited with eight saves.
Analysis: Toskala is already skating on thin ice with coach Ron Wilson and GM Brian Burke, and he is not helping his cause with bad performance after bad performance. Toskala continues to linger around .500 and remains a low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 Fantasy goalie. The Maple Leafs TG also has low-end appeal as well.
News: The Panthers scored the final four goals Tuesday against the Maple Leafs, including Richard Zednik's winner 1:08 into overtime past Vesa Toskala in a 5-4 comeback win. Toskala sat pretty with a 4-1 lead 7:47 into the third period before Florida started the comeback with Nathan Horton's 14th goal 8:13 into the final frame. Zednik scored the final two goals, including the equalizer at 14:31. Toskala made 33 saves in the disappointing loss.
Analysis: Toskala has been called out as of late by coach Ron Wilson and GM Brian Burke for his poor play. He responded Saturday with a huge 5-2 win against the Canadiens and was cruising Tuesday until having a late-game collapse. Toskala blames some of his troubles on a groin injury that has plagued him for quite some time, but he can't blame the injury Tuesday. Toskala continues to be a low-end Fantasy option until the wins come in consistently. The Maple Leafs TG also has low-end appeal.
News:The Sports Xchange reports the new regime of general manager Brian Burke and coach Ron Wilson has been tough on some of the players they inherited on the struggling Maple Leafs, and now it's goalie Vesa Toskala's turn to be grilled. Both the GM and coach voiced criticism of the Finn the last few days as he remains stuck near the bottom of the NHL's individual rankings. Burke lost his patience when Toskala allowed an overtime goal by ex-Leaf Bryan McCabe on Tuesday in a Florida win to put his record at 17-17-9 with a 3.34 goals-against average and .883 save percentage. Burke was telling Toskala that he should develop better practice habits, and Wilson chimed in a day later. "He's been inconsistent at best," Wilson said. "A team in our situation requires solid efforts from our goalie every single night. And that necessarily hasn't been the case." On Saturday in Montreal, Toskala seemed to have received the message a 31-save performance in a 5-2 win. "I don't waste my energy on what goes on in the media," Toskala said. "I'm just focused on playing hockey. It doesn't matter what goes on outside."
Analysis: Toskala has had groin/hip issues at times during his two seasons in Toronto and hinted that might be behind the perception that he's not working hard enough when the Leafs aren't playing. "At the end of the day, Vesa tells me he can play," Wilson retorted. "If the goalie tells you he can play, he is going to play." The Leafs have had no one else to turn to. They don't trust Curtis Joseph as he approaches his 42nd birthday in two months and they don't want to commit to top farm team goalie Justin Pogge when the team is playing such poor defense. They lost 5-0 to Buffalo with Pogge between the pipes on Wednesday. But the win in Montreal could mean a turnaround for Toskala, who is still a low-end Fantasy option until he can post consistent wins.
News: Toronto G Vesa Toskala gave up two goals and made 31 saves in a 5-2 win over the Canadiens on Saturday. It was the first time in four games that he had not given up exactly four goals. He has now won three of his last four games, giving up 14 goals during that span.
Analysis: Toskala took a tough loss to the Panthers on Tuesday when former teammate Bryan McCabe beat him in the overtime period to give him the loss. This was a far better performance on Saturday against a better team. Toskala remains a low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 option right now. The Maple Leafs TG is a low-end unit.
News:Bryan McCabe scored 3:30 into overtime against his former team, giving the Florida Panthers a 4-3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night. McCabe raced up the left wing and his slap shot went off Vesa Toskala's arm before trickling over the goal line for his 10th of the season. Toskala held a 3-1 lead heading into the third period before Cory Stillman tied the game with a power-play score 53 seconds left in the third period. Toskala made 27 saves in the loss.
Analysis: Toskala was riding a two-game win streak coming into Tuesday and could have easily made it three had he not fallen apart late in the game. Still, he has allowed four goals in three straight starts and five of seven appearances. Toskala's name has popped up plenty during trade talks, so he might not even finish the season with Toronto. He has had an awful season and remains at best a low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 Fantasy goalie. The Maple Leafs TG is a low-end option.
News: Toronto G Vesa Toskala was able to come away with a win over the Penguins on Saturday despite giving up three goals in the second period, winning the game 5-4. It was Toskala's second win in a row since the All-Star break, giving up four goals in both games.
Analysis: Usually giving up eight goals in two games is a recipe for at least one loss, especially playing for the Maple Leafs, but it wasn't for Toskala. Obviously he hasn't been impressive over this two-game span but he has done enough to get the win. He is having a pretty bad season and should only be thought of as a low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 option despite starting most of Toronto's games. The Maple Leafs TG is a low-end option.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala got plenty of offensive support during a 7-4 win Thursday against the Avalanche. Toskala, who made 16 saves, trailed 2-1 before Toronto finished the second period scoring three of the last four goals. Colorado then tied the game at 4 3:10 into the third before Toronto finished the game scoring the last three goals. Toskala won for the first time in four starts.
Analysis: The Maple Leafs intend to give prospect Justin Pogge a few starts down the stretch to see if the he indeed the goalie of the future. In fact, Toskala's name has popped up plenty during trade talks, so he might not even finish the season with Toronto. He has had an awful season and remains at best a low-end No. 2/high-end No. 3 Fantasy goalie. The Maple Leafs TG is a low-end option.
News: Toronto G Vesa Toskala went toe to toe with the Bruins on Wednesday, taking them into a penalty shootout, but he couldn't come away with the win as he allowed three penalty shots to get past him as he ultimately took a 4-3 shootout loss. He made 27 saves in the game, allowing three goals in regulation. Toskala was the victim of a shutout in his last game against the Hurricanes in a 2-0 loss.
Analysis: It doesn't seem to matter how well Toskala plays, he can never do enough to earn a win for himself. He has now lost six of his last seven contests and heads into the All-Star break with a record of 15-17-7. He as not been impressive for the Leafs this year and it could be only a matter of time before goalie of the future Justin Pogge is called up from the minors. Toskala is a low-end No. 2 option at best. The Maple Leafs TG is a low-end option.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala allowed just a pair of second-period goals Monday against the Hurricanes, but it was enough to send him to a loss as Cam Ward made 35 saves in a 2-0 win for Carolina. Toskala ended up making 32 saves in the losing effort. He has won just once in his last seven starts.
Analysis: Even when Toskala has a solid effort in net, he can't get any offensive support to get him off the snide. He has been a very poor goalie in 2008-09 and you have to wonder if Toronto is going to recall Justin Pogge, who is considered the goalie of the future, at some point. Toskala remains a very low-end No. 2 Fantasy goalie at best. The Maple TG also has low-end appeal.
News:Rich Peverley scored past Vesa Toskala with 69 seconds left in overtime to give the Atlanta Thrashers a 4-3 comeback victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday. Toskala shut out the Thrashers on eight shots in the first period and carried a 3-0 lead into the second before collapsing. He finished with 34 saves as he lost for the fifth time in six appearances.
Analysis: Friday pretty much summed up Toskala's season. He was 5-0-1 with a 1.81 GAA against the Thrashers prior to Friday night, but he couldn't even hold a three-goal cushion. It has been a trying season for the former Sharks standout and Toskala has dropped to a low-end No. 2 Fantasy goalie. The Maple Leafs TG also has low-end value.
News: Toronto G Vesa Toskala was less than impressive on Thursday against Carolina but was good enough to earn a 6-4 win. Toskala gave up the four goals on 32 shots, making 28 saves. The win snaps a four-game losing streak for Toskala in which he gave up 14 goals.
Analysis: If Toskala has to depend on his team to score more than four goals, he's almost always going to take a loss playing for the Maple Leafs. He and his Fantasy owners caught a break on Thursday as Toskala continues to look below average. He remains a low-end No. 2 option while the Maple Leafs TG is a low-end option.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala turned aside 21 shots during a 2-0 loss to the Predators Tuesday. Toskala shut out Nashville over the first two periods before Radek Bonk scored a power-play goal 5:33 into the period to snap the scoreless game. It was fourth straight loss for Toskala.
Analysis: Toskala just can't catch a break right now. Even when he plays well, he takes a tough loss. Toskala is having a down season and it appears he will linger around .500 all year. He remains a low-end No. 2 Fantasy option while the Maple Leafs TG is a low-end option in general.
News: Toronto G Vesa Toskala gave up three goals and made 26 saves in a 4-1 loss to the Flyers on Saturday. He was outshined by Martin Biron who made 41 saves and allowed only the one goal. Toskala has now lost three straight games and six of his last seven starts for Toronto.
Analysis: That's now three below average starts in a row for Toskala who just can't seem to get things turned around since Christmas. He's given up 12 goals over his past three games and got pulled on Thursday against Montreal. He remains a low-end No. 2 Fantasy option while the Maple Leafs TG is a low-end option in general.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala lasted just two periods during Thursday's 6-2 loss to the Canadiens. Toskala gave up five goals on 21 shots before being replaced by Curtis Joseph in the third period. Joseph finished the game by allowing one goal on eight shots.
Analysis: Toskala has put together two bad starts after looking sharp in a win Saturday against the Senators. Unless Toronto trades for goalie help or brings up Justin Pogge from the AHL, Toskala will remain the team's top netminder despite his struggles. Toskala remains a low-end No. 2 Fantasy option. The Maple Leafs TG has little Fantasy appeal.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala made 30 saves during a 4-2 loss Tuesday against the Panthers. Toskala fell behind 3-0 heading into the third period before Toronto broke into the goals column 4:43 into the final period. He allowed one power-play goal as he lost for the fourth time in five starts.
Analysis: Toskala looked sharp Saturday against the Senators as he returned from a two-game layoff. He then reverted back to his struggling ways Tuesday. Unless Toronto trades for goalie help or brings up Justin Pogge from the AHL, Toskala will remain the team's top netminder. Toskala remains a low-end No. 2 Fantasy option. The Maple Leafs TG has little Fantasy appeal.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala blocked 30 shots by the Senators on Saturday, allowing one goal and earning a 3-1 victory. The win snaps a three-game losing streak that Toskala had been mired in. He had given up 14 goals over that three-game stretch.
Analysis: It's nice to see Toskala snap out of the bad funk he was in the last week or so. This is the first time in seven games that Toskala had given up less than two goals in a game. However, don't let the performance fool you into thinking he's a top option. He remains nothing more than a No. 2 option at best and the Maple Leafs are a low-end No. 2 option.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala lost a third straight start Sunday when he made 25 saves in a 4-1 loss to the Capitals.
Analysis: Toskala has now allowed 21 goals over his last five starts, but hasn't got much help from his offense lately either, as the Leafs have just four goals scored in their last three games. With highly-touted Justin Pogge now up in Toronto, Toskala will have to play well if he wants to keep his starting job, and he isn't right now. The Leafs play three times in Fantasy Week 12 (Dec. 29-Jan. 4), and Toskala should remain a No. 2 goaltending option, as he should get at least a pair of starts. The Leafs TG also remains a No. 2 option.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala lost for a second straight game since returning from a groin injury when he allowed four goals Friday in a loss to the Islanders. Toskala made 27 saves in defeat.
Analysis: Toskala allowed seven goals in a loss to the Stars on Tuesday, so maybe this groin issue is still bothering him a little, as 11 goals in two games is pretty pathetic. With highly-touted Justin Pogge now up in Toronto, Toskala will have to play well if he wants to keep his starting job. The Leafs play three times in Fantasy Week 12 (Dec. 29-Jan. 4), and Toskala should remain a No. 2 goaltending option, as he should get at least a pair of starts. The Leafs TG also remains a No. 2 option.
News: The Toronto Sun reports that Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala hurt his groin in Sunday's win over the Penguins and will not play in Monday's game at Atlanta. "Hopefully it's nothing too serious," Toskala said. "I'll have to talk to the trainers and coaches and see what they want to do." A replacement starter for Monday has not been named, but it will either be veteran Curtis Joseph or 2004 first-round pick Justin Pogge, who was called up Sunday.
Analysis: Toskala picked a bad week to tweak his groin, as the Leafs have four games in Fantasy Week 12 (Dec. 22-28), and Toskala would likely have started at least three of those contests. Now, there's a chance he might not play at all in the period. He's clearly a super-risky start, and if you have a healthier option on your bench, you should probably go with them instead. Toskala is a No. 2 option in Fantasy when healthy. The Maple Leafs TG is also a No. 2 option.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala gave up three goals but got seven in support in a 7-3 win over the Penguins on Saturday. Toskala had to make only 20 saves to come away with the victory. Toskala has now won his last four decisions, although he got rocked in his last start for four goals before getting pulled and ultimately ending up with a no decision.
Analysis: Toskala hasn't exactly been a stone wall the past two games, but he has done his owners pretty well considering he's given up seven goals his last two games. Since the Leafs don't win all that often, Toskala is only a No. 2 option in Fantasy. The Maple Lea TG is also a No. 2 option.
News: Maple Leafs goalie Vesa Toskala gave up two goals on five shots in the first 4:34 Thursday against the Bruins and was pulled for Curtis Joseph. The backup didn't have much more luck, allowing four goals on 10 shots in the second period, before Toskala returned for the third period to let Boston take a 7-5 lead on Michael Ryder's goal with 9:18 to play. David Krejci made it 8-5 with 4:16 left, bringing hats from the stands onto the ice as he managed his first NHL hat trick. Joseph took the loss while making 12 saves. Toskala made seven saves.
Analysis: Toskala had a three-game win streak coming into Thursday and had allowed just seven goals in his previous four outings. He simply had an off night against the Bruins and it likely won't be enough to cost him his starting job. Since the wins could be scare at times, consider Toskala a No. 2 Fantasy option. The Maple Leafs TG remains a low-end Fantasy option.
News: Toronto G Vesa Toskala stopped 25 shots on Tuesday night in a shootout victory over the New Jersey Devils. Toskala allowed two goals during regulation and held tight in the overtime. The shootout got a bit rocky when he allowed Patrik Elias to score but after opposing goalie Scott Clemmensen let a Jason Blake shot by him, Toskala stopped Brian Rolston to win the game, 3-2.
Analysis: Toskala improved to 12-9-5 and has now won three straight starts for the Maple Leafs. Toskala remains just a No. 2 Fantasy goalie. The Maple Leafs TG is a low-end option.
News:Ian White broke a tie with 7:56 left in the third period, and Vesa Toskala made 24 saves in the Toronto Maple Leafs' 2-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Friday. Toni Lydman opened the scoring with his first of the season six minutes into the game. The defenseman cruised into the lower portion of the left circle before letting go a wrist shot that beat Toskala, who then shutout Buffalo the final two periods for his second straight win.
Analysis: Toskala had fallen on some hard times recently after having a nice stretch of starts, but coach Ron Wilson has shown faith in his netminder and left him in net. But then again, he really had no other choice. Toskala remains just a No. 2 Fantasy goalie. The Maple Leafs TG is a low-end option.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala stopped 26 shots during a 4-2 win Monday against the Islanders. He never trailed in the game and allowed just one power-play score. Toskala put an end to a three-game losing streak.
Analysis: Toskala had fallen on some hard times recently after having a nice stretch of starts, but coach Ron Wilson showed faith in his netminder and left him in net. But then again, he really had no other choice. Toskala remains just a No. 2 Fantasy goalie. The Maple Leafs TG is a low-end option.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala allowed only two goals and had 28 saves, but took a 2-1 loss to the Capitals on Saturday. That is Toskala's third straight loss, but this was by far the best of those three games.
Analysis: In his past three games, all losses, Toskala has allowed 13 goals. He has lost five of seven, which is indicative of how bad the Leafs really are. Toskala is a decent goalie but his team is pretty bad. He's a No. 2 Fantasy goalie, but the Maple Leafs TG is pretty useless.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala stopped 20 shots during a 6-3 loss to the Coyotes Thursday. Toskala took a 3-all game into the third period before Steve Reinprecht scored twice to put the game away. He also allowed a hat trick to Martin Hanzal in the loss. "That's a lot of goals, obviously," Toskala said. "I couldn't help the team more today."
Analysis: Toskala has lost his last two starts and has allowed 11 goals in the process. He continues his hot-and-cold ways, but with Curtis Joseph as the team's backup goalie, Toskala is not really in jeopardy of losing his starting job. Toskala remains more of a No. 2 Fantasy goalie and the Maple Leafs TG has limited appeal in Fantasy.
News: Toronto G Vesa Toskala was blasted early on Tuesday by the San Jose Sharks offense. Toskala tightened up between the pipes after allowing four 1st period goals but the Leafs still lost the game 5-2. Toskala allowed just a 3rd period goal to Joe Pavelski the rest of the way but the damage was done.
Analysis: Toskala came into Tuesday's game a winner in his last two starts, having allowed a total of three goals in those games. That was not the case on Tuesday against the Sharks solid offense. Toskala fell to 9-7-5 on the season and he raised his goals against average that was already kind of high at 3.02. He's been up and down for the Maple Leafs and his former team bettered him on Tuesday. Toskala remains more of a No. 2 Fantasy goalie and the Maple Leafs TG has limited appeal in Fantasy.
News:Vesa Toskala made 32 saves, leading the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Monday night. News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala stopped 29 shots and both shooters he faced in the shootout round to prevail during Thursday's 3-2 win against Boston. He has now won his last two outings and has allowed two or fewer goals twice in five outings since returning to the lineup Jan. 9.
Analysis: Toskala has struggled for the most part since returning to net after missing a few weeks with a groin injury. It is really a shame because he was playing so well before getting injured in late December. Toskala plays for one of the worst teams in the Eastern Division and is nothing more than a No. 2 Fantasy goalie at this time. The Maple Leafs TG is also a low-end Fantasy option.
News: G Vesa Toskala allowed four goals on 25 shots but won 5-4 against Carolina on Tuesday for his first win in four starts.
Analysis: Toskala, who now has two wins in the last eight starts, is to be considered a No. 2 Fantasy goalie for the upcoming period. The Maple Leafs TG is also a low-end Fantasy option at this time.
News:Vesa Toskala started for the third straight game and also lost Saturday when Toronto wasted a two-goal lead in the 3-2 loss at San Jose. Toskala allowed three goals (all in the third period) on 35 shots, and added an assist, although goalie assists don't count in most Fantasy formats.
Analysis: Toskala, who has just one win in the last seven starts, is to be considered a No. 2 Fantasy goalie for the upcoming period. The Maple Leafs TG is also a low-end Fantasy option at this time.
News: Toronto coach Paul Maurice didn't want goalie Vesa Toskala to play on back-to-back nights after losing 5-0 at Anaheim in his first game back from a groin injury, but had no choice to use him because of Andrew Raycroft's poor outing against the Kings.
Analysis: Consider Toskala a No. 2 Fantasy goalie for the upcoming scoring period. The Maple Leafs TG is also a low-end Fantasy option at this time.
News:Vesa Toskala, who has been out since Dec. 22 with a groin injury, returned to the ice Wednesday and allowed five goals on 21 shots in a 5-0 loss at Anaheim. Toskala only has 13 wins this season.
Analysis: Surely not the kind of return Toskala had in mind, but the Toronto offense was nowhere to be found in this game. Toskala will likely start against the Kings and Sharks on this Western Conference road trip. Consider Toskala a No. 2 Fantasy goalie for the upcoming scoring period (Jan. 7-13). The Maple Leafs TG is also a low-end Fantasy option at this time.
News:The Sports Xchange reports Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala missed his sixth game with a groin injury on Saturday against the Philadelphia Flyers, but is expected to play in all three games on the coming road trip to California that begins Wednesday in Anaheim.
Analysis: The good news is that Toskala appears ready to re-enter the lineup. The bad news is that he will face the Ducks, Kings and Sharks on the upcoming road trip. The Ducks and Sharks are two of the Western Conference's best teams, and the Kings can really fire the puck at home. Consider Toskala a No. 2 Fantasy goalie for the upcoming scoring period (Jan. 7-13). The Maple Leafs TG is also a low-end Fantasy option at this time.
News:The Sports Xchange reports Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala was a welcome sight at practice on Tuesday, even if his groin injury is not 100 percent. He had not been on the ice since a 2-1 victory Dec. 22 in Florida. Toronto lost the next three with G Andrew Raycroft at the controls before switching to G Scott Clemmensen Tuesday against Tampa during a 4-3 shootout win.
Analysis: Toskala has been up-and-down in his first year with the Maple Leafs. He is at 13-11-4, but is a better goalie than his numbers show. Toronto is just not that good of a team. Toskala is a serviceable No. 2 Fantasy goalie when healthy. It appears as though he could be back in the coming weeks. Continue to track his progress.
News: Toronto G Vesa Toskala missed his third straight game on Saturday and isn't expected back until the Jan. 1 game against the Lightning at the earliest. He has been placed on IR, retroactive to Dec. 22, so Wednesday's game is the earliest he can possibly return.
Analysis: With as poorly as Andrew Raycroft is playing right now, the Leafs will be hoping they get Toskala back as soon as possible, but no one wants to rush back from a groin injury. Consider Toskala a very risky injury start in Fantasy Week 14 (Dec. 31-Jan. 6). He is a solid No. 2 option when healthy, but the Leafs TG takes a hit while he's out.
News: Toronto G Vesa Toskala is nursing a groin injury and neither Toskala nor the Maple Leafs would comment on his status for Saturday's game against the New York Rangers. "You know what? I don't want to make predictions. It's just day-to-day right now," Toskala told the Toronto Globe and Mail on Thursday.
Analysis: Toskala had won six of his 10 starts in December before getting hurt but the Leafs have now lost two games in a row with Andrew Raycroft between the pipes. Groins are a sensitive issue for goalies, so Toronto are unlikely to rush their 30-year-old starter back before he's ready. He is a solid No. 2 option when healthy, but the Leafs TG takes a hit while he's out.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala stopped 29 shots during a 2-1 overtime win Saturday against the Panthers. It was his first win in four appearances (1-2-1). He has now allowed two or fewer goals in eight of 10 December starts.
Analysis: Toskala has looked more like the guy who opened December with five wins in six starts in his last two appearances and that is good news for Fantasy owners. He is getting used to life without Bryan McCabe, but still remains just a No. 2 Fantasy goalie. The Maple Leafs TG is also a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala stopped 19 shots during a 2-1 loss to the Lightning Thursday. Toskala is now winless in his last three starts (0-2-1) after winning six of seven starts from Nov. 29-Dec. 14.
Analysis: Toskala was one of the hottest goalies in the NHL, but that was before defenseman Bryan McCabe went down with a serious hand injury. It could be rough sledding for Toskala these next few months. He remains a No. 2 Fantasy goalie at this time. The Maple Leafs TG is also a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: With Carolina on the power play in overtime, Scott Walker tipped a slapshot by Eric Staal past Toronto goalie Vesa Toskala for the game winner Tuesday. Toskala made 35 saves in failing to win for the second straight start. He has allowed seven goals in that span.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala stopped 21 shots during a 4-1 loss to the Canadiens Saturday. The loss come a night after making 24 saves for his second shutout of the season in a 4-0 win Friday in Atlanta. Saturday was the first time he allowed more than two goals in eight starts.
Analysis: Toskala has played so well recently that it has been hard for head coach Paul Maurice to find playing time for Andrew Raycroft. Saturday's outing might be an indication that Toskala needs a break, but he is expected to see the majority of starts in net for Toronto. Right now, he is worth using as a No. 2 Fantasy goalie. The Maple Leafs TG is also a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News:Vesa Toskala and the Toronto Maple Leafs began to turn their season around with a win in Atlanta late last month. The Maple Leafs returned to Georgia on Friday night to prove they are still gaining momentum. Toskala continued his hot streak with 24 stops and Toronto took advantage of more second-period success to beat the Atlanta Thrashers 4-0 on Friday. Toskala posted his second shutout of the season and eighth of his career. He improved to 6-1 in his last seven games, a stretch that began with a 4-2 win in Atlanta on Nov. 29. "I'm seeing the puck well," Toskala said. "Overall, I'm really comfortable. I'm having fun. That's the key. It was important to get this road trip started the right way."
Analysis: Toskala has not allowed more than two goals in any game during the seven-game stretch, making it difficult for Toronto coach Paul Maurice to give his opening-day goalie, Andrew Raycroft, a start. "Toskala is playing very, very well," Maurice said. Toskala has looked more and more like the goalie everyone saw with the Sharks last season. Right now, he is worth using as a No. 2 Fantasy goalie. The Maple Leafs TG is also a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News:Vesa Toskala made 26 saves and allowed just one goal in a win against Tampa Bay Monday. "Vesa has settled down and is playing outstanding," said Nik Antropov, who added an assist. "We're feeding off it. He's playing amazing right now."
Analysis: Toskala earned his 11th win of the season as he made his seventh straight start in goal for Toronto. He is worth using as a No. 2 Fantasy goalie. The Maple Leafs TG is also a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News:Vesa Toskala played well for the Maple Leafs, making 18 saves, but still took the 2-1 loss Saturday against the Bruins. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for Toskala and it was the first time he faced a regulation defeat since Nov. 23 against the Stars.
Analysis: Despite the loss, Toskala still hasn't allowed more than two goals in his last five outings. Toskala is finally starting to play like the goalie the Leafs envisioned when they traded for him in the offseason. Toronto's defense has also improved in recent games and that has helped out Toskala. Right now, he is worth using as a No. 2 Fantasy goalie. The Maple Leafs TG is also a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala finished with 23 saves during Thursday's 6-2 win against the Rangers. He has now won his last four starts and has not allowed more than two goals in any of those games. He has made 105 saves during the win streak.
Analysis: Toskala is finally starting to play like the goalie the Leafs envisioned when they traded for him in the offseason. Toronto's defense has also improved in recent games and that has helped out Toskala. Right now, he is worth using as a No. 2 Fantasy goalie. The Maple Leafs TG is also a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News:Vesa Toskala made 34 saves in a win against Nashville on Tuesday. "He stole the show," said Nashville captain Jason Arnott, who had 12 shots on Toskala. "We were on the wrong end of the bounces." Toskala made his biggest save of the night with 8 1/2 minutes left when he stuck out his left leg to stop a Jason Arnott shot. Arnott shook his head in disbelief and turned to say something to the Finnish netminder. Toskala robbed Arnott again 90 seconds later.
Analysis: Toskala has three wins in his past three starts -- allowing a total of just five goals on 82 shots. Toskala remains a solid Fantasy option at this time, as is the Maple Leafs TG.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala, who has emerged as Toronto's No. 1 goalie after alternating with Andrew Raycroft, made his third straight start and sixth in seven games during Saturday's 4-2 win. He made 30 saves and now has won two straight starts.
Analysis: Toskala has just three wins in his last eight appearances, but hasn't allowed more than three goals in any of those outings. He is just the netminder for a very inconsistent team. Toskala remains a low-end Fantasy option at this time. As is the Maple Leafs TG.
News: Maple Leafs goalie Vesa Toskala improved to 7-8-3 after stopping 18 of 20 shots at Atlanta Thursday.
Analysis: Toskala is the top netminder for the Maple Leafs, but he is more of a low-end No. 2 Fantasy option, as is the Maple Leafs TG.
News:Vesa Toskala allowed three goals in regulation and two in a shootout loss to Montreal on Tuesday. He finished with 27 saves.
Analysis: Toskala is still the top netminder for the Maple Leafs, but he is more of a low-end No. 2 Fantasy option, as is the Maple Leafs TG.
News: Coyotes forward Daniel Winnik opened the scoring Saturday against the Maple Leafs at 4:16, and Peter Mueller then beat Andrew Raycroft to the short side at 8:24. At that point, Toronto coach Paul Maurice pulled Raycroft for Vesa Toskala. "I didn't like that first goal and made the change," Maurice said. "But that was not the story. We didn't move our feet, and that's a big part of the game." Toskala allowed a goal on the first shot he faced, with Steven Reinprecht firing a wrist shot under the crossbar and over the goalie's glove hand at 8:42. Raycroft made just five saves, while Toskala allowed three goals and made 27 saves.
Analysis: Toskala is giving the Maple Leafs plenty of quality appearances, they just stink as a team and can't provide him with the proper offensive support. He is still the top netminder for the Maple Leafs, but is more of a low-end No. 2 Fantasy option. As is the Maple Leafs TG.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala stopped 22 shots during a 3-1 loss to the Stars on Friday. It was his third straight start and his second straight loss. He has allowed five goals during the mini-losing streak.
Analysis: Toskala is giving the Maple Leafs plenty of quality starts, they just stink as a team and can't provide him with the proper offensive support. He is still the top netminder for the Maple Leafs, but is more of a low-end No. 2 Fantasy option. As is the Maple Leafs TG.
News:Vesa Toskala allowed three goals on 24 shots in a loss to the visiting Bruins on Tuesday.
Analysis: Toskala is still the best option in net for Toronto and will likely see the majority of starts over Andrew Raycroft. Toskala and the Maple Leafs TG are nothing more than low-end No. 2 Fantasy options at this time.
News:Vesa Toskala made 24 saves and the Toronto Maple Leafs halted a five-game winless streak by beating the Ottawa Senators 3-0 on Saturday. It was Toskala's first shutout since last Oct. 25, against Columbus, when he played for San Jose. It was his first win since Nov. 3 against the Canadiens.
Analysis: Toskala missed two games because of the flu, but it appears as though the extra rest helped him focus against a high-powered offense like the Senators. Toskala is still the best option in net for Toronto and will likely see the majority of starts over Andrew Raycroft. Toskala and the Maple Leafs TG are nothing more than low-end No. 2 Fantasy options at this time.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala (flu) was not in net Thursday as Toronto played against the Bruins. It was the second straight game he was on the bench. He remains day to day.
Analysis: Toskala is 1-3-1 in his last five appearances, including making two early exits, so the few days off to battle the flu comes at an ideal time. Toskala and the Maple Leafs TG are nothing more than low-end No. 2 Fantasy options at this time.
News:Andrew Raycroft allowed four goals on 25 shots in an overtime loss against Montreal Tuesday. Raycroft, coming off a 30-save night in Buffalo, continues to suffer from bad luck at home. He made some great saves, but let the winner in and was out-shone by Montreal's Carey Price.
Analysis: Raycroft was the surprise starter Tuesday as G Vesa Toskala fought a flu bug. G Scott Clemmensen was around the corner with the farm team if needed, but Toskala was okay to sit on the bench. Raycroft's Fantasy value remains limited to leagues as a No. 3 option or a flier in leagues that use average points per game in a scoring period. The Maple Leafs TG is a low-end No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Marcel Hossa scored the decisive goal in the shootout beating Vesa Toskala as the New York Rangers beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 Saturday night in the annual Hall of Fame game. Nik Antropov was stopped by Steve Valiquette on the first shootout attempt. Brendan Shanahan was the first New York shooter and beat Toskala high on the glove side. Mats Sundin shot high and wide before Hossa got his chance. He deked twice and buried the puck behind Toskala to end it. Toskala made 25 saves in regulation and overtime.
Analysis: Toskala is now 1-3-1 in his last five appearances, including making two early exits. If he doesn't straighten up soon, Andrew Raycroft might be seeing a few more starts. Toskala and the Maple Leafs TG are nothing more than low-end No. 2 Fantasy options at this time.
News: Maple Leafs goalie Vesa Toskala was chased at 8:08 of the middle period at Ottawa Tuesday with a power-play goal that made it 4-0. Andrew Raycroft stopped seven shots after taking over from Toskala, who made nine saves.
Analysis: Toskala had separated himself as the Maple Leafs' No. 1 goalie, but will post a poor performance every once in a while leaving the door open for Andrew Raycroft to earn a few more starts. Toskala and the Maple Leafs TG are nothing more than low-end No. 2 Fantasy options at this time.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala rebounded from a 3-2 loss Friday against the Devils to pick up his own 3-2 win Saturday against the Canadiens. He made 32 saves in his first win since Oct. 27. Toskala also had 32 saves in that win against the Rangers.
Analysis: Toskala has separated himself as the Maple Leafs' No. 1 goalie, but will post a poor performance every once in a while leaving the door open for Andrew Raycroft to earn a few more starts. Toskala and the Maple Leafs TG are nothing more than low-end No. 2 Fantasy options at this time.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala made 18 saves during Friday's 3-2 loss to the Devils. Toskala has lost his last two starts, allowing seven goals and making just 27 saves.
Analysis: Toskala has separated himself as the Maple Leafs' No. 1 goalie, but continues to post poor performances leaving the door open for Andrew Raycroft to earn a few more starts. Toskala and the Maple Leafs TG are nothing more than low-end No. 2 Fantasy options at this time.
News: Andrew Raycroft replaced starting goalie Vesa Toskala after Washington's fourth goal Monday. The Leafs have four on the road now, starting with back-to-back contests in New Jersey on Friday and Montreal on Saturday.
Analysis: Raycroft thought he might be looking at back-to-back games Nov. 9-10 for his next action. But when the Capitals put four past Vesa Toskala in less than 12 minutes, he was in for the first time in more than a week. Raycroft was beaten three times on 17 shots. With three days off, Toskala will have had plenty of rest to play both games if Maurice decides Monday's game was just a hiccup. Toskala can be considered either a No. 2 or No. 3 Fantasy goalie at this time.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala stopped 32 shots during Saturday's 4-1 win over the Rangers. He hasn't lost in his last four starts (3-0-1) and has allowed two or fewer goals in the three wins.
Analysis: Toskala has seen most of the starts as of late for the Maple Leafs and is finally starting to live up to his potential. He will still lose some starts to Andrew Raycroft, but can be considered either a No. 2 or No. 3 Fantasy goalie at this time. The same goes for the Maple Leafs TG.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala turned away 23 shots during a 5-2 win over the Penguins Thursday. Toskala has won two of his last three starts and hasn't suffered a regulation loss since Oct. 13 against, ironically, the Penguins.
News: Goaltender Vesa Toskala allowed four goals, and stopped 32 shots in regulation against Atlanta Tuesday, but the Leafs still haven't had him or Andrew Raycroft get on a roll. The Leafs are averaging a little more than four goals against per game.
Analysis: Toskala got the shootout loss, but he has only two wins in his past five starts. He still remains a solid No. 2 Fantasy option in most formats.
News: Vesa Toskala stopped 26 shots for his second win of the season on Thursday night against the Panthers. Nik Antropov scored with :27.6 remaining in regulation to break a 2-2 tie and give the Maple Leafs the win. "I was just in the right position at the right time," Antropov said. "We needed it, and fortunately we won."
Analysis: Toskala might have played one of his best games of the season. He'll look to keep it going on Saturday night against the Blackhawks. He remains a solid No. 2 Fantasy option in most formats.
News: Maple Leafs G Vesa Toskala faced a barrage of shots during Saturday's 6-4 loss to the Penguins and came away with 46 saves. He allowed five goals and the Penguins got their final tally on an empty netter.
Analysis: Fantasy owners might want to turn away before reading the next line. Toskala has lost his last two starts while allowing a total of 12 goals. He has been far from the acquisition the Maple Leafs thought they were getting from the Sharks. Don't be surprised if he continues to split time in net with Andrew Raycroft. Toskala is nothing more than a low-end Fantasy goalie until he gets on track. The Maple Leafs TG is no better than a No. 2 Fantasy option.
News: Vesa Toskala allowed seven goals on 39 shots in Tuesday's loss against the Carolina Hurricanes. "We didn't play our best, not even close," Toskala said. The crowd turned on Toskala, sarcastically cheering saves in the third period.
Analysis: It got ugly in a hurry in Toronto on Tuesday, but it wasn't all Toskala's fault. Four of Carolina's goals came on the power play and the defense had several giveaways in their own zone to give Toskala no chance. However, don't be surprised to see Andrew Raycroft back in the crease for Thursday's game against the Islanders.
News: Vesa Toskala, making his first home start after signing with the Maple Leafs in the offseason, finished with 25 saves during Saturday's 4-3 win over the Canadiens. Toskala lost in his Maple Leafs' debut Thursday after allowing three goals to the Senators.
Analysis: Toskala and Andrew Raycroft appear to be locked in a platoon, as neither was particularly attractive in the preseason and neither stood out or did anything to hurt themselves in their first starts of the season. Toskala should eventually emerge as the No. 1 goalie, but can't be trusted outside of being a No. 2 or No. 3 Fantasy goalie at this time. The same goes for the Maple Leafs TG.
News: Vesa Toskala, who struggled in the preseason after coming over from San Jose in a trade, stopped 26 shots in his Toronto debut on Thursday in Ottawa. The Finnish goalie acknowledged that Daniel Alfredsson picked just the right spot on the winner in the third period. "Yeah, right under the bar," Toskala said. "Good scoring chance, good shot."
Analysis: Toskala and Andrew Raycroft appear to be locked in a platoon, as neither was particularly attractive in the preseason and neither stood out or did anything to hurt themselves in their first starts of the season.
News: Andrew Raycroft was named as the starter for Wednesday's regular season opener against the Senators, as coach Paul Maurice obviously thought he had the better preseason than offseason acquisition Vesa Toskala. Razor made 26 saves while allowing four goals in the overtime loss. He was beaten by Dany Heatley for the game-winner in the extra session. "I thought the first two [goals] were tough," Maurice said. "They were good shots but ... clearly he was not loved [by the crowd] early but I think he did a really good job settling into the game, and after that I thought he was very good."
Analysis: Look for Toskala to make his Maple Leafs debut in the second half of the home-and-home on Thursday in Ottawa. Raycroft and Toskala look like they might be locked into a goaltender platoon early on, something Toskala is used to from his days in San Jose. That's a no-win situation for Fantasy owners in cumulative leagues, although each goaltender still has value in formats which average points per game in a scoring period.
News: Vesa Toskala was in net for all seven goals in Wednesday's preseason game against the Sabres, making 29 saves in the loss.
Analysis: So far during the preseason, Toskala is not endearing himself to Maple Leafs fans, who thought they were getting an upgrade over Andrew Raycroft. So far, Toskala is 0-2-0 with a 5.04 GAA and .844 save percentage in two preseason games. He is still a decent low-end No. 2 Fantasy goaltender in all leagues, but play it safe and grab Andrew Raycroft as insurance.
News: The San Jose Sharks have traded G Vesa Toskala and F Mark Bell to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday for a first-round pick (No. 13 overall in 2007), second-round selection and fourth-round pick in 2008.
Analysis: Toskala is a huge improvement over Andrew Raycroft, who the club traded for in the offseason last year. He will be a bona fide No. 1 Fantasy goaltender in all leagues and Raycroft is now nothing more than a backup backstop in all formats. The Maple Leafs might try and trade him now.
News: Sharks G Vesa Toskala stopped 18 shots in a 5-1 win over the Thrashers Thursday. Toskala has now won both starts since returning from a groin injury on March 16.
Analysis: Toskala is going to share time in net with Evgeni Nabokov, but still remains a decent No. 2 or No. 3 Fantasy goalie in most formats.
News: The weary San Jose Sharks were skating on fumes and grit -- all except for their goalie, who had a whole month to rest up for his latest shutout. Vesa Toskala made 35 saves in his first start since Feb. 14, and the Sharks beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-0 Friday night for their fourth straight victory.
Analysis: Toskala tried to come back at the end of February, but had to go back on the injured list shortly thereafter. Now that he is back, Fantasy owners can once again use him in Fantasy lineups, but be warned, Evgeni Nabokov has been sharp as of late. Expect the two goalies to perhaps split time in net.
News: Toskala (groin) was able to dress as the backup for Tuesday's game against the Blackhawks, but he did not play again as Evgeni Nabokov is just on fire.
Analysis: Nabokov is 4-0-1 with a 0.60 GAA over the past five games, so coach Ron Wilson would be crazy to go back to his goaltender rotation with that type of recent production. Bide your time with Toskala and keep him reserved until Nabokov cools.
News: Vesa Toskala (groin) was still unable to play in Sunday's game against Edmonton.
Analysis: Toskala remains day to day. Keep him reserved for Fantasy Week 24 (March 12-18) and keep him out of the active lineup until he can officially return and prove his health.
News: Sharks G Vesa Toskala (groin) did not dress as the team's backup goalie Friday against the Canucks.
Analysis: Toskala hasn't appeared in a game since Feb. 14 and the Sharks haven't been forward on when they expect him back. Continue to keep him out of active Fantasy lineups. When healthy, he is a high-end Fantasy option.
News: Vesa Toskala (groin) has been ruled OUT for Tuesday's game at Minnesota. The team recalled Dimitri Patzold from Worcester of the AHL to serve as the backup to starter Evgeni Nabokov.
Analysis: Toskala might be able to return for Friday's game against Vancouver, but keep him reserved in all Fantasy leagues until he can officially return and start a game.
News: Sharks G Vesa Toskala (groin) dressed as the team's backup goalie Wednesday against the Predators.
Analysis: Take this as a good sign that Toskala is nearing his return to the ice. You might want to keep him reserved until he gets a start in net just to make sure he is 100 percent.
News: Toskala (groin) was placed on injured reserve over the weekend and will be sidelined until at least early March. Nolan Schaefer continues to serve as the backup to Evgeni Nabokov.
Analysis: Toskala should be kept reserved in all Fantasy leagues, but don't drop him just yet unless you are absolutely in a roster bind and need the space.
News: Sharks G Vesa Toskala (groin) was once again sidelined Saturday against the Flames.
Analysis: Toskala remains day to day. Keep him reserved in all leagues until he is cleared to return.
News: Vesa Toskala (groin) was once again sidelined for Thursday's game at Chicago. Evgeni Nabokov got the start and he posted a shutout in Toskala's absence.
Analysis: Toskala remains day to day. Keep him reserved in all leagues for Fantasy Week 22 (Feb. 26-March 4) if he is unable to play on Saturday at Los Angeles.
News: Sharks G Vesa Toskala is suffering from a groin injury and was not only unable to make his scheduled start Wednesday night, but he didn't dress as the backup either. Nolan Schaefer was recalled on an emergency basis and dressed as Evgeni Nabokov's backup against the Capitals.
Analysis: Toskala is considered day to day. The Sharks play on Thursday at Chicago and it would not be a surprise to see either Nabokov or Schaefer start again.
News: Vesa Toskala (flu) was unable to play in Wednesday's game at Washington. In fact, he did not even dress as the backup, as Nolan Schaefer backed up Evgeni Nabokov in the game.
Analysis: Toskala is considered day to day. The Sharks play on Thursday at Chicago and it would not be a surprise to see either Nabokov or Schaefer start again.
News: Coach Ron Wilson told the San Jose Mercury News that Vesa Toskala has "been a little bit under the weather." He might miss Wednesday's game at Washington as a result.
Analysis: We'd reserve Toskala in all daily Fantasy leagues, as it is likely Evgeni Nabokov will start the game if Vesa is not 100 percent.
News: The Predators bounced back from a 4-1 loss to Los Angeles last Saturday that snapped an eight-game, home-winning streak, and they did it by chasing Sharks goaltender Vesa Toskala midway through the first period Wednesday. Evgeni Nabokov (groin) replaced Toskala but couldn't do much better. "I didn't like some of the shots (Tuesday against St. Louis), and I didn't like the two goals again (Wednesday)," Wilson said of pulling Toskala even though Nabokov has been nursing a groin injury. "And I don't care if they are exact shots. In a game like this, you're going to need saves."
Analysis: Toskala has been inconsistent lately, so only keep him active as a No. 2 goalie. Nabokov is the less talented netminder, but he should be kept reserved in all Fantasy leagues until he can start a couple games in a row and prove his health.
News: Vesa Toskala allowed five goals on 23 shots in Tuesday's game at St. Louis, as the Sharks won the second game of their season-long road trip.
Analysis: Toskala has won his past six games against the Blues, and the Sharks have won five straight in St. Louis. The Blues have not beaten San Jose at home since Dec. 18, 2003.
News: Vesa Toskala was in goal for both of those wins and is 5-0-0 with a 1.39 goals-against average in his past five starts against St. Louis (22-25-9). The Sharks roll into Savvis Center in St. Louis to play the Blues.
Analysis: San Jose has won two of three overall meetings with the Blues this season and is 7-1-1 in the past nine matchups.
News: A day after allowing six goals to the Ducks, Sharks G Vesa Toskala got some much needed revenge Wednesday against the Ducks. He made 20 saves for his 23rd win of the season.
Analysis: Toskala remains a solid Fantasy option in most formats.
News: Vesa Toskala allowed six goals on 30 shots in Tuesday's game against the Ducks to take the loss.
Analysis: Toskala will look to get back on track on Wednesday night at Honda Center in Anaheim for the second half of the home-and-home.
News: Vesa Toskala made 20 saves and recorded San Jose's first multipoint game by a goalie, getting two first-period assists in the Sharks' 4-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday. News: The San Jose Mercury News reports that Vesa Toskala will start Thursday's season opener against St. Louis. "Tosk played well in preseason, and based on how he finished last year and the way he played in the preseason, he gets the first game," Coach Ron Wilson said after practice Wednesday. "But it doesn't mean anything more than that. That doesn't mean he's the No. 1 goalie and Nabby's the backup. I don't want to read any of that because that's not the case at all. I could have flipped a coin."
Analysis: Not exactly the rousing endorsement you'd like to hear if you were Toskala. But still, Fantasy owners can be glad that he faces the Blues to start the season. He'll still split starts with Evgeni Nabokov, who will start on Saturday against the Islanders. Remember that Nabokov had an assortment of injuries last season that opened the door for Toskala. Splitting starts could actually benefit Nabokov and his Fantasy owners in leagues that use weekly averages.

Nabokov went 16-19-7 with a 3.10 GAA in 44 regular-season starts. Since they'll be sharing starts, they are both much more valuable in leagues that use average scoring per week. Otherwise, use them as No. 2 or 3 goalies.
News: Evgeni Nabokov allowed three goals on 33 shots in Wednesday's preseason game at Calgary, as he bested Miikka Kiprusoff. The effort was not as impressive as Vesa Toskala's 25-shot shutout the night before against the Canucks, but it was good nonetheless.

Analysis: Toskala will enjoy a two-week break while Nabokov will head off to Turin to represent Team Russia in the 2006 Winter Olympics. Since Nabokov signed a contract extension earlier in the season, do not think Toskala is near taking over as the No. 1 goaltender in San Jose.
