Canucks sign LW Pettinger

News: The Canucks have signed LW Matt Pettinger.
Analysis: Pettinger showed enough in seven AHL games to prompt this signing by the Canucks. He will man the lower lines in Vancouver for the time being and has no Fantasy value at this time.

Pettinger has first goal since Dec.

News: Lightning LW Matt Pettinger scored a goal and finished at minus-1 during Friday's game against the Blues. Pettinger cut it to 3-2 with 7:50 left on his third goal of the season and first score since Dec. 23.
Analysis: Pettinger has been limited at times this season due to injury, but has been a constant in the lineup since mid-December. Still, he plays less than 12 minutes per game and is primarily a lower-line forward. Pettinger has marginal Fantasy appeal.

Pettinger on the verge of returning

News: The Sports Xchange reports Lightning LW Matt Pettinger has been skating with the team for the past week and is nearing a return to health. Pettinger injured his knee during practice on Nov. 25 was expected to be out two weeks. While he's participated in all drills with the team during practice, he is not a full strength with his work in the corners and along the boards. He said he hopes to be ready to return at some point during the upcoming four-game road trip.
Analysis: Pettinger was claimed off waivers by the Lightning earlier in November after he was let go by the Canucks and was seeing some time on the top line. He remains a non-factor in Fantasy play right now and is still an injury-risk start Week 10 (Dec. 8-14).

Pettinger to play on top line

News: The St. Pete Times reports that Lightning LW Matt Pettinger will play on Tampa Bay's top line Tuesday at Toronto. He will replace Vaclav Prospal, who will now center a line featuring Chris Gratton and Mark Recchi.
Analysis: Pettinger was claimed off waivers by the Lightning earlier this month after he was let go by the Canucks. He has apparently made a good enough impression already and will be rewarded with ice time alongside Vincent Lecavalier and Martin St. Louis. He remains a non-factor in Fantasy play right now, but keep a close eye on how he does with this promotion. Prospal's value takes a bit of a hit with this move, but he's still worth using as a low-end starting Fantasy forward in all leagues.

Lightning claim Pettinger off waivers

News: The Tampa Bay Lightning have claimed LW Matt Pettinger off waivers from the Vancouver Canucks.
Analysis: Pettinger scored 36 goals over two seasons in Washington before struggling under new coach Bruce Boudreau last season, scoring just twice in 56 games before being traded to Vancouver, where he scored four times in 20 games. He remains a non-factor in Fantasy play.

Canucks send three to AHL

News: Veteran Vancouver Canucks forwards Matt Pettinger, Jeff Cowan and Jason Krog were sent down to the American Hockey League after clearing waivers on Wednesday. Pettinger, who has played 354 NHL games over seven seasons and is making $1.1 million this season and Krog were both sent to Vancouver's AHL affiliate in Manitoba. Cowan, a tough guy who has played more than 400 NHL games since 2000, was sent to Peoria, the affiliate of the St. Louis Blues.
Analysis: All three players are on one-way contracts, meaning they must be paid the full amount in the minor leagues but it won't count against the Canucks' salary cap while they're down. Pettinger scored 36 goals over two seasons in Washington before struggling under new coach Bruce Boudreau last season, scoring just twice in 56 games before being traded to Vancouver, where he scored four times in 20 games. Krog signed a $700,000 free-agent contract in Vancouver this summer after leading the AHL in scoring and being the MVP during both the regular season and playoffs last season. All three of these players can be ignored in Fantasy.

Cooke to Capitals for Pettinger

News: The Vancouver Canucks have traded LW Matt Cooke to the Washington Capitals for LW Matt Pettinger.
Analysis: Cooke is only worth using in leagues that reward penalty minutes, while Pettinger is having a very poor season and has minimal Fantasy value. Both should continue to be ignored in most formats.

Pettinger erases points drought

News: Matt Pettinger scored his second goal for Washington during Saturday's 6-3 win against the Thrashers. It was his first goal since Oct. 29 against the Maple Leafs and first point since the same game.
Analysis: Pettinger is having a down year after totaling 30 or more points in his previous two seasons. He is not a serious player for the Capitals and is nothing more than a Fantasy reserve at this time.

Pettinger scores first of the season

News: Brian Sutherby, Matt Bradley, Jeff Schultz, Matt Pettinger and Boyd Gordon all scored their first goals of the season for the Capitals at Toronto Monday. "We played very well (Monday), all four lines played well, everybody scored and our goalie played well," said Alex Ovechkin, who has nine goals in as many career games against the Maple Leafs. "I think we deserved (Monday's) win."
Analysis: Pettinger had a goal and an assist for the Capitals. He had just one assist in his first 10 games. He is owned in one percent of CBSSports.com leagues -- which is about where he should be.
