Canucks send pair to AHL

News: The Sports Xchange reports Canucks D Michael Funk and D Lawrence Nycholat both cleared waivers after being the final cuts of preseason and were assigned to Manitoba of the AHL.
Analysis: The Canucks had high hopes for Funk and Nycholat in the preseason, but neither player could crack the roster because of a numbers crunch. It's safe to ignore both players in Fantasy until further notice.

Nycholat returns to Vancouver

News: The Canucks signed defensemen Lawrence Nycholat and Nolan Baumgartner to contracts Thursday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Analysis: The 30-year-old Nycholat re-joins the Canucks after finishing 2008-09 with the Avalanche. Nycholat had zero goals and one assists in 14 games with the Canucks and no points in five games with the Avs. He is clearly just organizational depth and can be ignored on Fantasy Draft Day 2009.

Nycholat misses fourth straight

News: Avalanche D Lawrence Nycholat (upper body) missed his fourth straight game on Wednesday against the Coyotes. The Sports Xchange reports he is out indefinitely.
Analysis: The Avalanche don't have a real pressing need to get Nycholat active since he is nothing more than a lower-pairing defenseman when healthy. Continue to ignore Nycholat in Fantasy leagues.

News: Avalanche D Lawrence Nycholat (upper body) was not in the lineup Sunday against the Ducks and has missed the last three games. The Sports Xchange reports he is out indefinitely.

Nycholat held out a second game

News: Avalanche D Lawrence Nycholat missed a second straight game Friday against the Canucks with an upper-body injury. He remains questionable heading into Sunday against the Ducks.
Analysis: Nycholat has no points in five games since being acquired at the trade deadline from Calgary. Nycholat is just roster depth for Colorado and has no Fantasy value when healthy.

Nycholat taken out vs. Sharks

News: The Sharks lost right wing Jonathan Cheechoo to a game misconduct penalty in the first period Sunday against the Avalanche for a potentially dangerous hit on Colorado defenseman Lawrence Nycholat. Cheechoo drove Nycholat headfirst into the boards in a corner near the Colorado net. Although Nycholat appeared to dip his shoulder right before Cheechoo arrived, possibly compounding the hit's severity, Nycholat was down on the ice for several moments before skating to the dressing room under his own power.
Analysis: Nycholat logged just 2:11 of ice time before leaving the game. He has no points in five games since being acquired at the trade deadline from Calgary. Nycholat is just roster depth for Colorado and has no Fantasy value when healthy.

Leopold to Calgary for Nycholat, more

News: TSN reports that the Avalanche have dealt D Jordan Leopold to the Flames for D Lawrence Nycholat, prospect D Ryan Wilson and a second-round draft pick. Leopold played with Calgary from 2002-06.
Analysis: Leopold has 20 points in 64 games this season, which is his best offensive campaign in a while. He missed a ton of time the previous two seasons with injuries. His value might spike a little with this move to a contender, but you should continue to only worry about him in deeper leagues for now. Nycholat, who was claimed off waivers from Vancouver by Calgary on Tuesday, will continue to be a non-factor in Fantasy play. Wilson, who has 20 point and 56 PIM in the AHL this season, is still year or two away from playing in the NHL, so don't worry about him, either.

Nycholat claimed by Calgary

News: The Canucks placed D Lawrence Nycholat on waivers Tuesday and it took only a matter of hours before the Flames scooped him up. "Nycholat is a similar type player to Mark Giordano," Flames general manager Darryl Sutter said in a statement. "We were prepared to give up a draft pick to acquire a depth defenseman."
Analysis: The Flames are Nycholat's fourth team in three years. He has played just 14 games for the Canucks this season and has been on IR because of a groin injury since late January. He will give Calgary added depth, but is not a recommended Fantasy option.

Nycholat close to return

News: With D Laurence Nycholat close to returning from a groin injury, the Canucks could soon have nine NHL experienced defensemen on their roster very soon. There's no official word on when Nycholat will return however.
Analysis: Nycholat started the season on IR because of a back injury and now he's back on with a groin problem. Luckily, he has limited Fantasy appeal.

Injury alters Canucks blue line

News: Canucks defenseman Kevin Bieksa is expected to miss two weeks with a broken foot. He was hurt by a teammate's shot against Nashville on Nov. 4, but finished that game and played three more before the fracture was discovered on Thursday. "He'd been X-rayed two or three times. The X-ray was showing up nothing," coach Alain Vigneault said. "He still felt pain so yesterday we had a scan done, which showed a hairline fracture." Vigneault said veteran Rob Davison, a healthy scratch for 12 of 16 games, would take Bieksa's spot in the lineup Saturday against Toronto. The Canucks also recalled defenseman Lawrence Nycholat from a conditioning stint in the AHL on Friday.
Analysis: Nycholat and Davison are just roster depth for the Canucks right now, and until they get consistent playing time, they can't really help Fantasy owners. Continue to keep them off Fantasy rosters.

Nycholat sent for conditioning

News: Canucks D Lawrence Nycholat, who has only played three of 14 games this season, was sent to Manitoba of the AHL on a conditioning assignment Thursday.
Analysis: Nycholat started the season on IR because of a back injury and it doesn't appear as though he is fully recovered. He needs to get his legs back under him, but even when he does return, he has limited Fantasy appeal.

Nycholat taken off injured list

News: The Sports Xchange reports D Lawrence Nycholat (back) taken off the injured list to play Thursday in Detroit. He logged 9:55 of ice time and finished at even. He spent two minutes in the penalty box for high-sticking.
Analysis: Nycholat might stay with Vancouver because he must clear waivers, but he will be a low-end pairing defenseman and has little to no Fantasy value.

Nycholat out another 7-10 days

News: The Sports Xchange reports Canucks D Lawrence Nycholat started the season on the injured reserve list and is expected to miss another seven to 10 days after hurting his back.
Analysis: Nycholat has only played 31 NHL games despite being 29 years old, but also has a one-way, $600,000 contract and must clear waivers to be sent down to the AHL, meaning he might stick with the Canucks when healthy. Nycholat might stay with Vancouver, but he will be a low-end pairing defenseman and has little to no Fantasy value.

Nycholat could stick with Canucks

News: The Sports Xchange reports C Ryan Shannon's only chance of making the Canucks this season was as a top-six forward, and those chances were even smaller than the speedy, 5-foot-9 speedster himself after GM Mike Gillis acquired Kyle Wellwood off waivers from Toronto. So rather than bury Shannon in the AHL, Gillis traded him to the Ottawa Senators for AHL All-Star D Lawrence Nycholat. Gillis improved an already deep defense by adding the skilled Nycholat, who was expected to make the Senators this season. If he proves worthy of making the Canucks, Gillis has enough bodies to deal away a top defenseman in exchange for that extra top-six forward help his team so badly needs.
Analysis: Nycholat has only played 31 NHL games despite being 29 years old, but also has a one-way, $600,000 contract and must clear waivers to be sent down to the AHL, meaning he may stick with the Canucks. Nycholat heads to Vancouver

News: The Canucks traded forward Ryan Shannon to the Ottawa Senators for defenseman Lawrence Nycholat on Tuesday.
Analysis: The 29-year-old Nycholat spent most of last season in the AHL. He had 12 goals and 49 points in 77 games for the Binghamton Senators and has played in 31 career NHL games with Ottawa, the Washington Capitals and New York Rangers over eight seasons, recording eight points. He is nothing more than organizational depth and can be ignored in Fantasy.

D Nycholat re-signs with Ottawa

News: The Ottawa Senators signed RW Niko Dimitrakos to a one-year contract and they have also re-signed W Dean McAmmond and D Lawrence Nycholat to multi-year deals.
Analysis: Nycholat got a shot with the Capitals last season and was Fantasy worthy for a brief period. However, each of these players has minimal appeal heading into the 2007-08 season until further notice.

Nycholat makes Ottawa debut

News: Lawrence Nycholat (illness) was able to make his Ottawa debut in Tuesday's game against the Bruins. He was scoreless with three shots on goal in 12:48 of ice time.
Analysis: Nycholat got off to a quick start with the Capitals, but might not see as much ice time with the Senators even when healthy. He is only worth a look in the largest of Fantasy leagues at this point.

Nycholat dealt to the Sens

News: Lawrence Nycholat, who was on injured reserve with the Capitals due to an undisclosed illness, has been traded to the Ottawa Senators for minor-league D Andy Hedlund and a sixth-round draft pick in 2007.
Analysis: Nycholat got off to a quick start for the Capitals due to some injuries to their defensive corps, but he went cold and then the playing time dried up. It is doubtful he'll get a ton of time or see much Fantasy appeal in Ottawa. However, if and when he does get into the lineup, his plus/minus rating will be much better.

Nycholat placed on the IR

News: The Washington Capitals announced Lawrence Nycholat has been placed on injured reserve due to an undisclosed injury.
Analysis: This move seems a little shady, as they would have to risk sending him through waivers if they sent him back to the AHL. Since John Erskine and Brian Pothier have returned from injury, Nycholat was simply no longer needed. Either way, it appears safe to drop him in all Fantasy leagues.

Nycholat has gone ice cold

News: Lawrence Nycholat, who came on after his initial recall from the AHL and produced points in bunches, has cooled off significantly over the past 10 games.
Analysis: Nycholat has managed just two assists and a minus-6 rating and it would be not surprising in the least to see him returned to Hershey of the AHL shortly.

D Nycholat has tailed off

News: Lawrence Nycholat has tailed off over the past seven games, posting just one assist. He finished up before the All-Star break with a four-game scoreless streak and a minus-3 rating.
Analysis: Nycholat had been playing pretty well, but he is now worth nothing more than a spot as a No. 5 or 6 defenseman in Fantasy leagues of 12 or more teams.

Nycholat honored on Tuesday

News: LW Tomas Fleischmann, C Alexandre Giroux and D Lawrence Nycholat were honored by the Washington Capitals before Tuesday's game against the Flyers, as they were named to the AHL All-Star game.
Analysis: Nycholat was scoreless with a plus-1 rating in 23:31 of ice time. He has two goals, six points and a plus-6 rating over the past eight games. He is worth adding in all larger Fantasy leagues if you need help at the defense position.
