Stars reel in Skrastins for two years

News: The Dallas Stars have signed free agent defenseman Karlis Skrastins to a two-year deal worth $2.75 million. The Stars gave the 34-year-old Skrastins $1.1 million for the 2009 season and $1.65 million for 2010.

He also played in the 2004 and 2006 Stanley Cup playoffs and has skated for Latvia at the Winter Olympics in 2002 and 2006. Skrastins scores vs. former team

News: The Sports Xchange reports Panthers D Karlis Skrastins played all 82 games in three straight seasons for the Predators (2000-03). Saturday's goal against his former team was his second of the season, matching his total for the previous two seasons combined. "It's nice to score a goal, especially for me. I'm not a guy who scores a lot of goals. And it was my first goal here in Nashville," said Skrastins, who played his first five NHL seasons with the Predators. "I was hoping it would be the game winner, but maybe next time."
Analysis: Skrastins is averaging more than 24 minutes per game as the Panthers' blue line has been devastated by injury. He has three points in eight games since returning from an injury of his own. Skrastins has always been more of a defensive-minded player with limited offensive upside. That's not likely to change in 2008-09 despite a nice start. Skrastins remains more of a Fantasy option in leagues that reward heavily for short-handed stats.

He also had a plus-1 rating and two-minute penalty in 23:27 of ice time. Skrastins has never been an elite offensive player, so despite the goal, he remains a low-end Fantasy option.
