Avs' MacKinnon Eyes Full Recovery

News: Nathan MacKinnon has resumed skating Mike Chambers of The Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Nathan MacKinnon has been skating for the past two weeks and appears to be on track with the 6-to-8 week recovery timetable that was established back in early March. MacKinnon will be participating in the World Championships next month for Team Canada which will serve as a suitable rehab assignment before entering the offseason. Assuming no further injury during the international tournament, the forward will be at full strength for the start of next season.

Avs' MacKinnon To Start Skating In A Few Weeks

News: Nathan MacKinnon (foot) will resume skating in a few weeks.
Analysis: Nathan MacKinnon was only expected to be limited for six-to-eight weeks after fracturing his foot in early March, so he should still be set for a relatively normal offseason. The reigning Calder Trophy winner regressed during his sophomore season, posting 14 goals and 38 points over 64 games, but at just 19 years old, his development remains well ahead of the curve. He still has several point-per-game seasons in his future, possibly as soon as 2015-16.

Avs' MacKinnon Out 6-To-8 Weeks With Broken Foot

News: Nathan MacKinnon has been diagnosed with a fractured foot and will be out for 6-to-8 weeks.
Analysis: Nathan MacKinnon apparently first suffered the injury when he took a shot off the foot in a Feb. 22 game against the Lightning, Terry Frei of the Denver Post reports. An initial X-ray came back negative, but after aggravating the foot in Wednesday's game against Penguins, the fracture was confirmed. The injury ends what has been a disappointing season for MacKinnon, who had seen his scoring tail off considerably from his Calder Trophy-winning rookie campaign. It might also represent the final nail in the coffin for the Avs' fleeting playoff hopes, as the team's underwhelming offensive attack doesn't figure to improve with the removal of one of its top playmakers. The 19-year-old is still a prime piece of real estate in dynasty formats, but those in season-long leagues are best served cutting bait following the long-term injury. MacKinnon's absence should create more opportunities for youngsters Dennis Everberg and Joey Hishon to see looks on scoring lines.

Avs' MacKinnon Notches GW Goal

News: Nathan MacKinnon notched the game-winning goal Wednesday in a 3-1 win over Pittsburgh.
Analysis: Nathan MacKinnon returned to his usual spot on the second line to tally his 14th goal of the season, deflecting the puck into the net off of a Jan Hejda pass in the second period. The second year forward now has five goals in five games despite a turbulent week that has included a benching, a broken nose, and a demotion to the third line. With the Av's only eight points back of a playoff spot with 18 games to go, you can expect MacKinnon to get plenty of ice time in a last-ditch effort to make the playoffs.

Avs' MacKinnon Good To Go After Breaking Nose

News: Nathan MacKinnon, who suffered a broken nose Saturday against the Wild, was a full participant in Tuesday's practice, Terry Frei of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Nathan MacKinnon also returned to second-line duties next to Ryan O'Reilly and Gabriel Landeskog, after having been banished to a bottom-six role during the Minnesota game. It's been a tough season for MacKinnon, but if he can get similarly hot over the final month and a half like he did as a rookie, he could still pay handsome dividends for owners in the fantasy playoffs.

Avs' MacKinnon Suffers Apparent Broken Nose

News: Nathan MacKinnon is believed to have suffered a broken nose in Saturday's game against the Wild, the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Nathan MacKinnon's injury likely stemmed from a hit laid on him by the Wild's Sean Bergenheim in the third period of Saturday's game. While broken noses can be painful, it is still something most players can play through, so it's quite possible MacKinnon will be back in the lineup for the team's next game Wednesday against the Penguins, but owners should keep an eye out for a status update prior to the opening faceoff.

Demotion In Store For Avs' MacKinnon

News: MacKinnnon, who was benched during the third period in Friday's game against the Stars, will be dropped to the third line for Saturday's game against the Wild, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Nathan MacKinnon entered Friday's game with four goals in his previous two games, but his play against the Stars clearly irked coach Patrick Roy. The young forward would finish without a single shot on goal in his 12:35 of ice time, and was bumped from the second line in favor of Cody McLeod by the tail end of the game. The Avalanche ultimately prevailed in a shootout without any participation from MacKinnon, prompting Roy to say after the game that McLeod would stick on the second line for Saturday's game. Don't expect MacKinnon's demotion to last long.

MacKinnon's First Hat Trick Leads Avs To Victory

News: Nathan MacKinnon was a monster Sunday, notching his first career NHL hat trick, firing three shots on goal and recording a game-high four takeaways in a win over Tampa Bay.
Analysis: Nathan MacKinnon is heating up of late, recording at least one point in five of his last six games. Skating on the top line with Ryan O'Reilly, MacKinnon should be able to build off this dominating performance. This may just be a hunch, but we think he turns it on from here on out. Stick with him, as he's got tremendous talent and can light it up when he's at his best.

Avs' MacKinnon Still Mired In Sophomore Slump

News: Nathan MacKinnon recorded a secondary assist and five shots on goal in Thursday's loss to the Rangers.
Analysis: Nathan MacKinnon came out of the gates slow in October, and has simply been unable to put together any momentum. His longest scoring streak of the season is just three games, and his assist Thursday was his first point in February. The 19-year-old's talents are too immense to justify cutting him outside of shallow single-season formats, so most of his disgruntled owners will simply have to hope he catches fire at some point in the final two months.

Avs' MacKinnon Dishes Out Two Assists

News: Nathan MacKinnon dished out a pair of helpers in Friday's win over Nashville.
Analysis: The two points snapped a three-game scoring drought for Nathan MacKinnon, who now has nine goals and 29 points in 50 games. While he's been held off the scoresheet in seven of his last nine games, the Avs are playing good hockey right now, picking up at least one point in six of their last seven games. MacKinnon's only 19, so we wouldn't give up on him just yet this season. His whopping 152 shots on goal indicate more goals are on the way. Patience is a virtue.

Avs' MacKinnon: Goal And Assist In Shootout Loss

News: Nathan MacKinnon had a goal and an assist in Saturday's 3-2 shootout loss to the Lightning.
Analysis: He's been stung hard by the dreaded sophomore slump -- he has just 27 points in 46 games after tallying 63 in 82 games. However, there have been a few signs of life lately -- he has five points, including three goals, in his last seven games. We're not prepared to say he's coming out the other side, but we're hopeful. A good second half could be in the making. Take a chance on him in a trade.

Avs' MacKinnon Tallies Two Points

News: Nathan MacKinnon scored the first goal of Tuesday's game just 53 seconds in, assisted on Max Talbot's goal 24 seconds later, and finished plus-2 with two PIM in the 2-0 victory over Chicago.
Analysis: This was one heck of a crazy game, as the Avs jumped out to that 2-0 lead in the first 77 seconds of the game, and that was the end of the scoring, as Semyon Varlamov spun a 54-save shutout. This was a big game for Nathan MacKinnon, as the 2013 No. 1 pick had gone scoreless in four straight and has seen his numbers regress sharply in his sophomore season. We're still waiting for him to really get going; maybe this is the start.

Avs' MacKinnon Starting To Heat Up

News: Nathan MacKinnon notched his sixth goal of the season in Saturday's loss to the Blackhawks.
Analysis: Nathan MacKinnon hasn't delivered on the promise his 63-point rookie season foretold, but he does seem to be coming around a bit lately. He's recorded a point in three of his last four games, and has attempted four shots in consecutive contests. The 19-year-old has too much talent not to stumble into a scoring outburst sooner or later.

Avs' MacKinnon Goes Cold

News: Nathan MacKinnon has failed to pick up a goal or assist in any of his four December contests.
Analysis: It's no coincidence that the Avs have lost all four games with the star center failing to produce. In addition to not providing much offense, Nathan MacKinnon has accumulated a minus-8 rating during that four-game stretch, bringing him down to minus-12 for the season. Expect the 19-year-old to break out of his sophomore slump eventually, but it looks like he could struggle to reach the 60-point mark.

Avs' MacKinnon Dishing Out The Helpers

News: Nathan MacKinnon dished out a career-high three assists and was a plus-2 in Saturday's win over the Hurricanes.
Analysis: That's five assists in two games for Nathan MacKinnon, who is up to 16 points (five goals) in 21 games on the season. MacKinnon is looking much better of late, scoring five times in his last 11 games after opening the season with no goals in his first 10 games. With his linemate Gabriel Landeskog starting to heat up, look for MacKinnon to take it up a notch in the near future. He could easily hit 70 points this season.

Avs' MacKinnon Dishes Two

News: Nathan MacKinnon assisted on both Colorado goals in Thursday's 3-2 loss to the Capitals.
Analysis: A solid effort from Nathan MacKinnon, but we're still looking for more consistency from 2013's top pick -- he's hit the scoresheet in only three of his last seven games for the struggling Avalanche.

Avs' MacKinnon To Center Third Line

News: Nathan MacKinnon will continue to play center along with Daniel Briere and Jamie McGinn on the third line, the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Nathan MacKinnon has enough talent to produce his own offense, but playing alongside Briere and McGinn likely will not help. MacKinnon may find it hard to produce points on this line so fantasy owners should take note.

Suspension Looming For Avs' MacKinnon?

News: Nathan MacKinnon may face suspension after a hit-from-behind that injured Luke Schenn of the Flyers in Saturday's game.
Analysis: Nathan MacKinnon was chasing Schenn toward the end boards and extended his arms toward Schenn at the goal line. He seemed to change his mind in terms of pushing Schenn, but made contact anyway, sending Schenn shoulder first into the boards. Schenn was forced from the game.

Avs' MacKinnon Heating Up After Two-Point Effort

News: Nathan MacKinnon netted a power-play goal and added an assist in Saturday's shootout loss to the Blues.
Analysis: After a slow start, Nathan MacKinnon has heated up, recording three goals and four points in his last two games. You knew this was coming, as a rising star like MacKinnon is too good to stay quiet for long. Keep him rolling.

MacKinnon Scores Two For Avs

News: MackKinnon scored a pair of goals -- his first two of the year -- in Thursday's 5-0 romp over the Isles.
Analysis: The first marker came on the power play. It's been a slow start for 2013's top draft pick, who'd managed all of four assists in 10 games entering Thursday's action, but the Avs as a whole are just starting to click on offense. Stick with Nathan MacKinnon.

Avs' MacKinnon Picks Up Two Assists In Defeat

News: Nathan MacKinnon finished with two assists and a team-high seven shots on goal in Thursday's loss to the Senators.
Analysis: Nathan MacKinnon has seen both his position and linemates change at several points in the early going, as coach Patrick Roy continues to look for the right combinations to get the Avs out of their funk. It's resulted in rather tepid production for MacKinnon to date (no goals, three assists, and a minus-3 rating in five games), but it's too early to sound the alarm just yet. Perhaps Thursday's strong performance will prove to be the breakthrough outing he needed.

Avs' McKinnon Will Start Season At Right Wing

News: Nathan MacKinnon will start Thursday night's opener at right wing, but will see time at center moving forward.
Analysis: Nathan MacKinnon is working on his faceoff ability as he continues to grow into a complete two-way player. Colorado has high expectations for the young superstar, and it would not be surprising to see MacKinnon push for 75 points this season.

Avs' MacKinnon Adds Strength To Frame

News: Nathan MacKinnon said he has added about 12 to 13 pounds of muscle over the summer, Adrian Dater of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Nathan MacKinnon and the Avalanche will kick off training camp next Thursday, at which point the reigning Calder Trophy winner will put his increased size and skill on display. With a top-six role guaranteed for MacKinnon out of training camp this season, he could make a push for 70 points.

Avs' MacKinnon To Play For Canada At Worlds

News: Nathan MacKinnon will travel to Minsk, Belarus to join Team Canada at the World Hockey Championships, Sportsnet reports.
Analysis: Just like fellow Cole Harbour-native Sidney Crosby before him in 2006, Nathan MacKinnon will compete in the Worlds as an 18-year-old at the conclusion of his rookie season. Of course, MacK would rather be battling for the Cup with the Avs in Round 2 of the playoffs, but their crushing Game 7 OT loss at home to the Wild obviously afforded him the opportunity to play for his country. The NHL's 2013-14 rookie scoring leader (63 points) has rather limited experience on the international stage, registering just a single point in six World Junior games two years ago. As always, Hockey Canada will keep a watchful eye on their players, so this will be a golden opportunity for MacKinnon to showcase his stuff on the larger ice surface in a very early precursor to the 2018 Olympics -- a tournament most pundits agree he's a lock to play in for Canada.

MacKinnon's Big Night Carries Avs Past Wild

News: Nathan MacKinnon scored Colorado's first goal and then added three assists in Saturday's 4-2 win over Minnesota, giving the Avalanche a 2-0 series lead.
Analysis: The Wild have thus far found no solution for the gifted teenager, who is tied for the playoff scoring lead with seven points already. If you drew him in a playoff pool, run with him.
