Avs' MacKinnon To Play For Canada At Worlds

News: Nathan MacKinnon will travel to Minsk, Belarus to join Team Canada at the World Hockey Championships, Sportsnet reports.
Analysis: Just like fellow Cole Harbour-native Sidney Crosby before him in 2006, Nathan MacKinnon will compete in the Worlds as an 18-year-old at the conclusion of his rookie season. Of course, MacK would rather be battling for the Cup with the Avs in Round 2 of the playoffs, but their crushing Game 7 OT loss at home to the Wild obviously afforded him the opportunity to play for his country. The NHL's 2013-14 rookie scoring leader (63 points) has rather limited experience on the international stage, registering just a single point in six World Junior games two years ago. As always, Hockey Canada will keep a watchful eye on their players, so this will be a golden opportunity for MacKinnon to showcase his stuff on the larger ice surface in a very early precursor to the 2018 Olympics -- a tournament most pundits agree he's a lock to play in for Canada.

MacKinnon's Big Night Carries Avs Past Wild

News: Nathan MacKinnon scored Colorado's first goal and then added three assists in Saturday's 4-2 win over Minnesota, giving the Avalanche a 2-0 series lead.
Analysis: The Wild have thus far found no solution for the gifted teenager, who is tied for the playoff scoring lead with seven points already. If you drew him in a playoff pool, run with him.

Three-Assist Playoff Debut For Avs' MacKinnon

News: Nathan MacKinnon, playing in his first career NHL playoff game Thursday, dished out three assists and went plus-3 in a 5-4 overtime win over the Wild.
Analysis: After notching two regulation helpers, Nathan MacKinnon picked up the primary assist on Paul Stastny's overtime winner. Last year's No. 1 overall pick appears primed to pay off fantasy owners in playoff pools, particularly because the Avs should have the edge in this series.

Despite Scare, MacKinnon Grabs Helper Thursday

News: After violently crashing head first into the post and heading to the tunnel Thursday, Nathan MacKinnon came back to record his 39th assist of the season on Paul Stastny's third-period goal against the Canucks.
Analysis: Yikes. Avs fans everywhere held their breath as their star rookie was tripped up by Alex Edler and went flying bucket-first into the iron. Thankfully, the speedy 18-year-old returned seemingly unscathed to record an assist and three shots on goal in 20:31 of ice time. After playing in all 80 games to date for Colorado, MacK now leads all rookies in goals (24), assists (39), points (63), power-play goals (eight), game-winning goals (five) and shots on goal (232). His plus-25 rating ranks third in first-year players as well. Can you say "Calder Trophy?

MacKinnon Notches Two Points For Avs

News: Nathan MacKinnon picked up two assists and went plus-2 during Tuesday's win in Edmonton.
Analysis: Last year's top pick is hot, with seven points and a plus-5 rating in his last six games. He's now got 62 points and a plus-24 rating in what's been a terrific rookie campaign, and his long-term upside is sky-high.

Avs' MacKinnon Notches Goal, Assist In Win

News: Nathan MacKinnon contributed a goal and an assist in Saturday's 4-0 win over the Blues.
Analysis: Nathan MacKinnon saw a modest 15:37 of ice time in this one, but it certainly didn't hinder his effectiveness. The rookie has amassed 24 goals and 36 assists in 77 games this season.

Avs' MacKinnon Grabs Helper In Win Tuesday

News: Nathan MacKinnon pitched in an assist on Gabriel Landeskog's first-period goal Tuesday, as the Avs edged the Predators 5-4 in a shootout.
Analysis: After a rare dry spell -- where he was held scoreless four games in a row -- the youngster looks to be back on track, recording his fourth point in the last five games. He now leads all rookies with 55 points and should take home the Calder Trophy when the dust settles on the season - barring an unlikely slump or setback, of course.

Avs` MacKinnon Moves Back To Center Monday

News: Nathan MacKinnon will return to playing center -- his natural position -- when the Avs host the Jets on Monday, the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: On the heels of his 13-game point streak coming to an end, the rookie will move from right wing to center while Paul Stastny sits out with a back injury. Gabriel Landeskog will remain on the left side while Jamie McGinn will move up from the third line to cover right-wing duties. We don`t need to tell you to pencil MacK into your lineup, but prepare yourself for a potential dip in production while the Avs adjust to life without Stastny, however long that may be.

Avs` MacKinnon`s Streak Ends At 13

News: Nathan MacKinnon was finally held off the scoresheet Saturday as the Blues downed the Avalanche at home, 2-1.
Analysis: And so ends the great 13-game point streak for the 18-year-old rookie. By failing to reach 14 games, he fell one game short of Patrick Kane and Ryan Getzlaf`s 2013-14 co-record. It didn`t help that his linemate Paul Stastny left the game after just one shift with a back injury, but the fact remains that only Phil Kessel has more points since the calendar turned to 2014 than Nathan MacKinnon's 27. For that he is a virtual lock to win the Calder Trophy, and we have no doubt he will be back in the scoring column soon enough.

Avs` MacKinnon Breaks Gretzky`s Record Thursday

News: Nathan MacKinnon extended his point streak to 13 games in dramatic fashion Thursday, setting up the game-winner with just 32 seconds left in overtime as the Avs upended Detroit 3-2.
Analysis: With his last-minute assist, the "Other Kid from Cole Harbour" broke Wayne Gretzky`s record for the longest consecutive point streak by an 18-year-old set in 1979-1980. MacK broke the streak in style, dishing a tape-to-tape pass from behind the goal line to the slot that defenseman Andre Benoit rocketed past a helpless Jimmy Howard. Throughout the streak, he has racked up five goals and 13 assists, giving him 51 points in 63 games. Almost as impressive are the teenager`s 184 shots - good for 27th in the NHL - and plus-16 rating on a team that ranked third worst in that category last season. Even if Nathan MacKinnon`s magic streak comes to an end before he breaks teammate Paul Stastny`s all-time rookie record of 20 set in 2006-2007, he has more than proven himself. He belongs in both the NHL and your lineup - enjoy.

Avs` Rookie MacKinnon Extends Point Streak To 12

News: Nathan MacKinnon was credited with an assist in Tuesday`s 4-2 win over the Blackhawks. His point streak now sits at 12 games.
Analysis: The youngster`s amazing 12-game streak ties him for the longest scoring streak set by an 18-year-old. His company? None other than The Great One himself, Wayne Gretzky. MacK`s assist came on an empty-netter by Paul Stastny but hey, record books don`t discriminate. He`ll look to keep the dream alive Thursday against Detroit, a team he failed to record a point against in their only meeting on October 17.

Avs' Mackinnon's Streak Reaches Double Digits

News: Nathan MacKinnon assisted on a pair of third-period goals, including Paul Stastny's game-winner, as the Avalanche toppled the Coyotes 4-2 on Friday, extending his point streak to ten games.
Analysis: This kid is on fire. He creates havoc with his blazing speed and is only getting better as the season progresses. MacK's impressive point streak now sits at 10 games, with his 47 points comfortably leading the NHL rookie scoring race. Trailing him the closest are Tampa Bay's Tyler Johnson (37 points) and Ondrej Palat (35 points) who will look to put an end to his streak Sunday when the Lightning visit the Pepsi Center.

Avs’ Rookie MacKinnon Extends Point Streak

News: Nathan MacKinnon notched an assist in Wednesday's 6-4 loss to the Kings, extending his point streak to nine games.
Analysis: Last summer's No. 1 overall draft selection picked up right where he left off before the Olympics, assisting on a second period power-play goal by Andre Benoit, his 16th point in the last 12 games. Although Nathan MacKinnon still has 11 games to go before reaching linemate Paul Stastny's record rookie point scoring streak of 20 games set in 2007, he leads all NHL rookies in goals (22), assists (23) and points (45) and has cemented himself as the frontrunner for the Calder Trophy. The 18-year-old has been an integral piece of the youth movement led by GM Joe Sakic and coach Patrick Roy in Denver, and has been a treat for fantasy owners who were savvy enough to snatch him up.

News: Nathan MacKinnon (illness) returned to practice Tuesday and said afterward that he was feeling fine, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: With Nathan MacKinnon seemingly back at close to full health, fantasy owners can feel comfortable inserting the rookie forward into their lineups Wednesday. With 22 goals, 22 assists and a plus-14 rating over 58 games, the 2013 No. 1 overall draft pick has been as good as advertised.

News: Nathan MacKinnon missed Monday's practice due to illness, Adrian Dater of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: There's no word on just how sick Nathan MacKinnon is, but the team is still hopeful that he'll be able to suit up Wednesday against the Kings. The rookie center currently has 22 goals and 22 assists in 58 games this season.

Dominant Rookie Year Roars On For Avs' MacKinnon

News: Nathan MacKinnon paced the Avalanche with a goal and two assists in Saturday's demolition of the Sabres. The three points were a career high for MacKinnon.
Analysis: The odds-on Calder Trophy favorite now has contributed a total of three goals and four assists over his last seven games. The fact that Nathan MacKinnon has been shuffled around among the top three lines all season and continues to thrive demonstrates the depth of his talents. He's an excellent building block for both the Avs and fantasy owners in keeper leagues.

News: Nathan MacKinnon tallied a goal and an assist in Thursday's 5-4 win over the Wild -- his second straight game with a goal.
Analysis: With eight points in his last six games, Nathan MacKinnon's finally living up to his billing as the No. 1 overall selection in last year's draft. January was his best month of the season, as he's totaled nine goals and 13 points since the new year.

MacKinnon's Two Goals Not Enough For Avs

News: Nathan MacKinnon scored both the Avs' goals in Tuesday's 5-2 loss to Toronto.

Avs' MacKinnon: Two-Assist Night

News: McKinnon set up two goals in Saturday's win over the Predators. They're his first assists in nine games.
Analysis: He has five goals in those nine games, so it's not like he's not putting up points. But we do expect some playmaking from the kid, so this deuce is nice. He has 31 points in 48 games this season and is proving to be one of the Calder faves.

News: Nathan MacKinnon (foot) missed Tuesday's practice but expects to play Wednesday vs. the Senators, Adrian Dater of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: It appears the Avalanche coaching and medical staff was just exercising some precaution with the rookie, who is dealing with foot soreness after taking a puck to his skate in Monday's game against the Flames. The injury didn't stop him from putting up two power-play goals Monday, continuing his impressive scoring surge. He's delivered seven goals and an assist over his last seven games.
