Stars' Nichuskin Looks To Be A Scratch Wednesday

News: Nichushin didn't skate on a regular line during the Stars' morning skate and looks to be a healthy scratch for Wednesday's game against the Ducks, Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: After missing four and a half months following Nov. 18 hip surgery, Valeri Nichushkin made his return to the Stars' lineup for both of their games last weekend. He would pick up an assist and skated under 15 minutes in both contests, but will now be held out of his second straight contest as a scratch. While Nichushkin didn't appear to suffer any setbacks in his return to the lineup, the Stars probably just don't want to overwork him too quickly coming off a major injury. He could still have a shot at playing in the team's season finale Saturday against the Predators.

Stars' Nichushkin Set To Play Wednesday

News: Nichushin is on track to play in Wednesday's game against the Ducks, NHL.com's Mark Stepneski reports.
Analysis: Not only is Valeri Nichushkin, who was a scratch Monday, expected to return to the lineup, but he's also in line to see some power play duty. "My plan for Val is to get him some quality ice time. I'd like to get him involved in our second power play and see where he is at," coach Lindy Ruff said Wednesday of the 20-year-old forward, who missed four and a half months following Nov. 18 hip surgery.

Stars' Nichushkin To Play Friday

News: Valeri Nichushkin (hip) will play in Friday's game against the Blues, NHL.com's Mark Stepneski reports.
Analysis: Valeri Nichushkin will finally make his return to the NHL, and he may get another chance to play Saturday against the Predators. While it's unwise to expect much over the final few games of this season, the 20-year-old Nichushkin should be a very worthy target for 2015-16.

Stars' Nichushkin Nears Return

News: The Stars recalled Valeri Nichushkin (hip) from a conditioning assignment with AHL Texas on Thursday.
Analysis: According to NHL.com's Mark Stepneski, coach Lindy Ruff suggested Thursday that Valeri Nichushkin could play in one, or both of Dallas' upcoming games, Friday against the Blues and/or Saturday against the Preds. Prior to his Nov. 18 hip surgery, Nichushkin -- the No. 10 overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft -- did not record a point in four games for Dallas.

Stars' Nichushkin Starting Conditioning Assignment

News: Valeri Nichushkin (hip) was activated from injured reserve and loaned to AHL Texas on a conditioning assignment Friday, NHL.com's Mark Stepneski reports.
Analysis: Valeri Nichushkin is expected to play three games for AHL Texas, putting him on track to rejoin Dallas for the final five games of the NHL season, starting with Apr. 3 against the Blues.

Stars' Nichushkin Likely To Head To AHL On Friday

News: Valeri Nichushkin (hip) is expected to begin a conditioning assignment at AHL Texas on Friday, NHL.com's Mark Stepneski reports.
Analysis: Assuming Valeri Nichushkin is able to practice without any setback to his surgically-repaired hip over the next couple of days, he'll be on tap for a three-game stint in the minors. That would put Nichushkin on track to rejoin the Stars during the first week of April, allowing him to get in a few games with the parent club before the season draws to a close. Nichushkin isn't likely to provide any sort of meaningful impact in what's left of the 2014-15 campaign, but at 20 years old and dripping with upside, he'll make for a worthy target on draft day next season.

AHL Stint On Tap For Stars' Nichushkin

News: Coach Lindy Ruff said Valeri Nichushkin (hip) would head out to AHL Texas soon for a conditioning stint consisting of at least two games, Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: Valeri Nichushkin hasn't played competitive hockey since November, when he required hip surgery that threatened to end his season. While it looks like he'll see some game action in the near future, by the time the conditioning stint concludes he may only have an opportunity to play in a handful of games with the parent club before the season draws to a close.

Stars' Nichushkin Now Viewed As Day-To-Day

News: Coach Lindy Ruff said after Tuesday's practice that Valeri Nichushkin (hip) is now being viewed as "day-to-day," Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: Valeri Nichushkin has increased his involvement in practices over the last few days and appears to be nearly fully recovered from Nov. 18 hip surgery. Because of the lengthy absence, Nichushkin could require a conditioning game or two at AHL Texas before joining the Stars for the final few weeks of the season, but no specific plan has been formulated as of yet.

Stars' Nichushkin (Hip) 7-10 Days From Return

News: Valeri Nichushkin (hip) practiced Monday and will travel with the team, but remains 7-10 days away from returning, Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: Valeri Nichushkin's may have practiced with the team Monday, but he was wearing a red non-contact uniform while doing it. His return was moved to mid-March in February, and he still appears to be on track for that timetable.

Stars' Nichushkin: Could Be Back By Mid-March

News: Coach Lindy Ruff said Saturday that Valeri Nichushkin (hip) could be back in action with the Stars as soon as the middle of March, Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: However, Valeri Nichushkin will likely require a conditioning stint at AHL Texas, due to the fact that he hasn't seen any competitive ice time since early November. By the time Nichushkin is ready to return to the parent club, it's very possible the Stars will already find themselves out of playoff contention, but the team would simply be happy to have the promising 19-year-old get some more NHL time under his belt ahead of the 2015-16 campaign.

Stars' Nichushkin Has Timetable Pushed Back

News: Valeri Nichushkin (hip) met with his doctor in New York last Friday and was told he would need another 4-to-6 weeks of recovery before he could play in a game, Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: With a late-March return seemingly the best-case scenario for Valeri Nichushkin, it's probably too early for those in deep leagues to preemptively stash the winger in anticipation of his return. He continues to skate on his own before and after practice, but it looks like it will be at least a couple weeks or more before he joins his teammates for full-contact work.

Stars' Nichushkin 3-6 Weeks Away From Return

News: Stars general manager Jim Nill said Friday that Valeri Nichushkin (hip) is three-to-six weeks away from a return, NHL.com's Mark Stepneski reports.
Analysis: Valeri Nichushkin underwent surgery Nov. 13, and he just returned to the ice for light skating in late January. He's expected back before the end of the regular season, but he'll probably only get a few weeks of action.

Stars' Nichushkin Has First Skate Since Surgery

News: Valeri Nichushkin returned to the ice for some light skating this week, according to the Dallas Morning News.
Analysis: This was Valeri Nichushkin's first time on the ice since his November 13 hip surgery. It's a good first step, but Stars GM Jim Nill was cautious, saying, "He has a long way to go. We don't want to rush him, that's for sure." The team is still targeting March as the earliest time the young forward would be able to return to game action.

March Return Not Ruled Out For Stars' Nichushkin

News: Valeri Nichushkin (hip) could be able to resume playing at some point in March, Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: Valeri Nichushkin has been off the ice since undergoing hip surgery in mid-November. The young winger will have to get back on the ice in some capacity in next few weeks to improve his chances of playing again this season, but it's at least a positive development that the team isn't closing the door on a return in 2014-15.

Stars' Nichushkin Has Successful Surgery

News: Valeri Nichushkin underwent successful surgery on his hip Tuesday, NHL.com's Mark Stepneski reports.
Analysis: Valeri Nichushkin will need four months to recover from the surgery, likely keeping him out until the final weeks of the regular season. While the injury certainly qualifies as a setback for Nichushkin, the future still remains bright for the winger, who won't during 20 years old until March.

Stars' Nichushkin (Hip) To Go Under Knife

News: Valeri Nichushkin (hip) will undergo surgery this week and will be out four months, according to the Dallas Morning News. "We had it diagnosed and decided surgery is the best thing," general manager Jim Nill said.
Analysis: Valeri Nichushkin has been bothered by hip and groin soreness since September and has been in and out of the lineup. It's the same surgery that teammate John Klingberg had in the summer, and he's back on the ice already after that double hip procedure. Nichushkin could be ready just before the playoffs begin, but it might be too late for fantasy owners to reap much benefit from a player that seemed like a popular breakout candidate heading into the season.

Stars Place Nichushkin On IR

News: Valeri Nichushkin (groin/hip) was placed on injured reserve Sunday.
Analysis: Valeri Nichushkin has only managed to get ice time in four games so far this season while dealing with a persistent groin and hip issue. He's been held without a point and has only taken two shots in his limited action.

Stars' Nichushkin To Sit Out Saturday

News: Valeri Nichushkin has been ruled out of Saturday's game against the Sharks with a hip/groin injury, NHL.com's Mark Stepneski reports.
Analysis: Valeri Nichushkin, who has been nagged by the groin ailment since training camp, will remain off the ice for the next two or three days in an attempt to finally put the issue behind him. If he fails to notice much improvement during that timeframe, the Stars would more than likely hold him out of next Tuesday's game in Arizona.

Stars' Nichushkin Feeling Sore Again

News: Valeri Nichushkin is experiencing soreness and is questionable for Saturday's game against the Sharks, Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: It's unknown if the soreness is related to the groin issues that have dogged Valeri Nichushkin since training camp, but that would seem to be a likely culprit. Nichushkin was viewed as a potential breakout candidate heading into the season due in large part to his fine showing as a rookie and his expected presence on the top line with Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin, but health issues have been his downfall to this point. He's appeared in just four of the Stars' 13 games.

Nichushkin Likely To Return For Stars On Tuesday

News: Valeri Nichushkin (groin) is likely to return to the Stars lineup on Tuesday, according to Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News.
Analysis: Valeri Nichushkin missed nine games with injury. His absence paved the way for a new top line that coach Lindy Ruff seems to like. It's unlikely that Nichushkin will get back on the top line with Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn to start, but should get decent amount of ice time, as Ruff needs the remaining three forward lines to start producing.

Stars' Nichushkin Practices

News: Valeri Nichushkin (groin) practiced with the team Monday morning, Mark Stepneski of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: With Tyler Seguin not at practice, Valeri Nichushkin skated alongside Jason Spezza and Jamie Benn during drills. He likely won't play there during a game, but it's a good sign that Nichushkin is probably ready to return to the lineup.

Stars Activate Nichushkin, Send Him On Assignment

News: Valeri Nichushkin (groin) was activated from injured reserve and sent out on a conditioning assignment at AHL Texas.
Analysis: Since Valeri Nichushkin has been sidelined the past three weeks (and a total of seven games) with the groin injury, the Stars want him to appear in a few contests in the minors before allowing him to suit up for the parent club. The 19-year-old contributed 34 points in 79 games for the Stars as a rookie and will likely be earmarked for a top-line role alongside Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin once he returns from the rehab assignment.

Stars' Nichushkin Close To A Return

News: Coach Lindy Ruff said Valeri Nichushkin (groin) is close to returning from injured reserve, NHL.com's Mark Stepneski reports.
Analysis: The Stars indicated a few days ago that Valeri Nichushkin wouldn't be able to return at any point this week, so while the young winger appears to progressing well, don't expect him to suit up for either of the team's back-to-back tilts with the Ducks or Wild over the weekend. However, if he rejoins full practice and short order and no longer appears hampered by the groin injury that has bothered him since training camp, Nichushkin's activation could come in advance of Tuesday's game against the Kings.

Stars' Nichushkin Won't Play This Week

News: Valeri Nichushkin (groin) is not expected to return this week, Mark Stepneski of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Valeri Nichushkin's return has taken a little longer than expected, but head coach Lindy Ruff said that the winger's rehab is progressing. He did skate Monday, but won't return at any point this week as the Stars are being careful with him.

Stars' Nichushkin Ruled Out For Next Two Games

News: Valeri Nichushkin (groin) will not return for either of the Stars' next two contests, Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: Valeri Nichushkin resumed skating earlier this week, but he hasn't progressed to the point of being ready to play this weekend. Instead, he'll turn his focus toward practicing over the next couple of days, after which he could activated from IR.
