Stars' Nichushkin Has Successful Surgery

News: Valeri Nichushkin underwent successful surgery on his hip Tuesday, NHL.com's Mark Stepneski reports.
Analysis: Valeri Nichushkin will need four months to recover from the surgery, likely keeping him out until the final weeks of the regular season. While the injury certainly qualifies as a setback for Nichushkin, the future still remains bright for the winger, who won't during 20 years old until March.

Stars' Nichushkin (Hip) To Go Under Knife

News: Valeri Nichushkin (hip) will undergo surgery this week and will be out four months, according to the Dallas Morning News. "We had it diagnosed and decided surgery is the best thing," general manager Jim Nill said.
Analysis: Valeri Nichushkin has been bothered by hip and groin soreness since September and has been in and out of the lineup. It's the same surgery that teammate John Klingberg had in the summer, and he's back on the ice already after that double hip procedure. Nichushkin could be ready just before the playoffs begin, but it might be too late for fantasy owners to reap much benefit from a player that seemed like a popular breakout candidate heading into the season.

Stars Place Nichushkin On IR

News: Valeri Nichushkin (groin/hip) was placed on injured reserve Sunday.
Analysis: Valeri Nichushkin has only managed to get ice time in four games so far this season while dealing with a persistent groin and hip issue. He's been held without a point and has only taken two shots in his limited action.

Stars' Nichushkin To Sit Out Saturday

News: Valeri Nichushkin has been ruled out of Saturday's game against the Sharks with a hip/groin injury, NHL.com's Mark Stepneski reports.
Analysis: Valeri Nichushkin, who has been nagged by the groin ailment since training camp, will remain off the ice for the next two or three days in an attempt to finally put the issue behind him. If he fails to notice much improvement during that timeframe, the Stars would more than likely hold him out of next Tuesday's game in Arizona.

Stars' Nichushkin Feeling Sore Again

News: Valeri Nichushkin is experiencing soreness and is questionable for Saturday's game against the Sharks, Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: It's unknown if the soreness is related to the groin issues that have dogged Valeri Nichushkin since training camp, but that would seem to be a likely culprit. Nichushkin was viewed as a potential breakout candidate heading into the season due in large part to his fine showing as a rookie and his expected presence on the top line with Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin, but health issues have been his downfall to this point. He's appeared in just four of the Stars' 13 games.

Nichushkin Likely To Return For Stars On Tuesday

News: Valeri Nichushkin (groin) is likely to return to the Stars lineup on Tuesday, according to Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News.
Analysis: Valeri Nichushkin missed nine games with injury. His absence paved the way for a new top line that coach Lindy Ruff seems to like. It's unlikely that Nichushkin will get back on the top line with Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn to start, but should get decent amount of ice time, as Ruff needs the remaining three forward lines to start producing.

Stars' Nichushkin Practices

News: Valeri Nichushkin (groin) practiced with the team Monday morning, Mark Stepneski of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: With Tyler Seguin not at practice, Valeri Nichushkin skated alongside Jason Spezza and Jamie Benn during drills. He likely won't play there during a game, but it's a good sign that Nichushkin is probably ready to return to the lineup.

Stars Activate Nichushkin, Send Him On Assignment

News: Valeri Nichushkin (groin) was activated from injured reserve and sent out on a conditioning assignment at AHL Texas.
Analysis: Since Valeri Nichushkin has been sidelined the past three weeks (and a total of seven games) with the groin injury, the Stars want him to appear in a few contests in the minors before allowing him to suit up for the parent club. The 19-year-old contributed 34 points in 79 games for the Stars as a rookie and will likely be earmarked for a top-line role alongside Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin once he returns from the rehab assignment.

Stars' Nichushkin Close To A Return

News: Coach Lindy Ruff said Valeri Nichushkin (groin) is close to returning from injured reserve, NHL.com's Mark Stepneski reports.
Analysis: The Stars indicated a few days ago that Valeri Nichushkin wouldn't be able to return at any point this week, so while the young winger appears to progressing well, don't expect him to suit up for either of the team's back-to-back tilts with the Ducks or Wild over the weekend. However, if he rejoins full practice and short order and no longer appears hampered by the groin injury that has bothered him since training camp, Nichushkin's activation could come in advance of Tuesday's game against the Kings.

Stars' Nichushkin Won't Play This Week

News: Valeri Nichushkin (groin) is not expected to return this week, Mark Stepneski of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Valeri Nichushkin's return has taken a little longer than expected, but head coach Lindy Ruff said that the winger's rehab is progressing. He did skate Monday, but won't return at any point this week as the Stars are being careful with him.

Stars' Nichushkin Ruled Out For Next Two Games

News: Valeri Nichushkin (groin) will not return for either of the Stars' next two contests, Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: Valeri Nichushkin resumed skating earlier this week, but he hasn't progressed to the point of being ready to play this weekend. Instead, he'll turn his focus toward practicing over the next couple of days, after which he could activated from IR.

Stars' Nichuskin (Groin) Moved To IR

News: Valeri Nichushkin (groin) has been placed on injured reserve.
Analysis: Valeri Nichushkin has already been out for over a week with the lower-body ailment, so the move to IR doesn't come as much of a surprise. It's uncertain how much longer the Stars will be without the services of Nichushkin, but the youngster was able to get in a skate Monday, Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reports, suggesting a return to practice may be in the offing. Fortunately for Nichushkin, none of the Stars' other wing options have made a strong case over the last few games to take over his top-line role on a permanent basis.

Stars' Nichushkin To Miss A Week

News: Valeri Nichushkin is expected to sit out for the next week in order to rest his sore groin, Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: Valeri Nichushkin nursed the groin injury through most of the preseason and never seemed to recover from it as quickly as the Stars had hoped, so they'll hope that the issue clears up with some further time off the ice. While Nichushkin remains out, it looks like Colton Sceviour will receive the first opportunity to replace him on the top line, where he'll join Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn.

Stars' Nichushkin Out Tuesday

News: Valeri Nichushkin (groin) will not play in Tuesday's game against the Blue Jackets, Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: Valeri Nichushkin returned to Texas after suffering a groin/hip injury during Monday's practice, so he will not suit up Tuesday night. It remains to be seen both who will replace him on the Stars' top line, and how much additional action he will miss.

Stars' Nichushkin Leaves Practice

News: Valeri Nichushkin (groin/hip) left Monday's practice early, Mark Stepneski of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Valeri Nichushkin can't seem to shake this nagging combination of lower-body injuries, and it could cause him to miss Tuesday's game against the Blue Jackets. The winger has yet to crack the score sheet through two games so far this season.

Stars' Nichushkin Back Practicing

News: Valeri Nichushkin (illness) was back practicing Tuesday, NHL.com's Mark Stepneski reports.
Analysis: A muscle pull and an illness limited Valeri Nichushkin over the weekend, but only knocked him out for a couple days. What's more notable than his return to practice is the fact that he was used on the third line with Antoine Roussel and Cody Eakin on Tuesday, after working with Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin for most of the preseason. Coach Lindy Ruff may have just been experimenting with combinations, but if the move to bottom-six role becomes more permanent, Nichushkin's fantasy value would take a massive hit.

Dallas' Nichushkin Battling The Flu

News: Valeri Nichushkin was held out of Saturday's practice due to a slight muscle pull and a case of the flu, Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: The illness shouldn't be anything that jeopardizes his availability for next week's season opener. Expect him to return to practice within a few days.

Stars' Nichushkin Healthy Again

News: Valeri Nichushkin seems to be behind the groin injury that limited him last week, Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: Valeri Nichushkin has appeared in the Stars' last three preseason contests, supplying a goal and two assists during that span. He was skating on the top line with Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin at Thursday's practice, and it's all but certain that he'll open the season with that duo. Nichushkin turned in an excellent campaign as a rookie (14 goals, 20 assists, plus-20 rating in 79 games) and looks poised to take a leap forward in his sophomore season.

Stars' Nichushkin Could Play Friday

News: Valeri Nichushkin has reported improvement with his injured groin and could play in Friday's preseason game against the Lightning, NHL.com's Mark Stepneski reports.
Analysis: The young winger's groin injury has kept him out of the early stages of camp, but it looks like it's only a minor concern that won't impact his availability for the start of the season. Coach Lindy Ruff hasn't firmly declared his plans for his top-six forwards this season, but there's a good chance Valeri Nichushkin will open the year as the right wing on the Jamie Benn-Tyler Seguin line. Nichushkin could be set for a sizable leap forward in production in 2014-15.

Stars' Nichushkin Skates

News: Valeri Nichushkin (groin) skated Monday, Mark Stepneski of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: The 19-year-old winger has been battling through a groin injury lately, but is almost ready to return to game action, and should be ready to go in time for the regular season.
