Sabres' Ristolainen Picks Up Three Assists

News: Rasmus Ristolainen collected three assists in Friday's loss to the Blackhawks.
Analysis: Another great outing for Rasmus Ristolainen, who is finishing the season strong. The 20-year-old is riding a four-game point streak in which he's recorded three goals and seven points. He's a plus-9 over his last nine games and is averaging 20:27 of ice time, making him a worth a pickup for these final few games.

Sabres' Ristolainen Good To Go For Friday

News: Rasmus Ristolainen (illness) will return to the lineup Friday against the Blackhawks, Bill Hoppe of the Olean Times Herald reports.
Analysis: The illness prevented Rasmus Ristolainen from playing Wednesday against the Maple Leafs, but his return to practice Thursday suggests he's healthy and ready to play again. Before the illness reared its head, Ristolainen had been enjoying his most productive stretch of the season, tallying three goals and an assist over his previous three games.

Sabres' Ristolainen (Illness) Out Wednesday

News: Rasmus Ristolainen (illness) was not on the ice for pregame warmups, and will not play Wednesday against the Leafs, Paul Hamilton of WGR Sports Radio 550 reports.
Analysis: Rasmus Ristolainen wasn't expected to play after waking up a bit under the weather, and this was confirmed by his absence in pregame rushes. Look for the defenseman to return to the ice Friday against Chicago.

Sabres' Ristolainen Under The Weather

News: Rasmus Ristolainen (illness) is unlikely to play Wednesday against the Maple Leafs.
Analysis: Rasmus Ristolainen's overall numbers (17 points and a minus-29 rating in 73 games) aren't fantasy-friendly, but the 20-year-old has been on a bit of a roll of late, with goals in each of his last three games, to go along with an assist and a plus-6 rating in that span. We'll let you know if Ristolainen takes warmups later Wednesday, but for now it appears though his next chance to play will arrive Friday against Chicago.

Sabres' Ristolainen Produces Two Points In Loss

News: Rasmus Ristolainen scored his seventh goal of the season, had an assist and was a plus-3 in Saturday's loss to the Avalanche.
Analysis: Rasmus Ristolainen has scored in two straight games and has managed five points in his last seven games, giving him 16 points in 72 games on the season. The 20-year-old continues to log heavy minutes on the Sabres' blueline, skating 24:02 in Saturday's loss. He's an emerging fantasy threat who will be one to watch next season.

Sens' Ristolainen Finding Form On Power Play

News: Rasmus Ristolainen recorded a power-play point for the second straight game Tuesday, scoring the Sabres' lone regulation goal in a 2-1 shootout win over Boston.
Analysis: After going 10 straight off the scoresheet, Rasmus Ristolainen's surprisingly found his stride in the early part of this week. He's been seeing more time on the man advantage of late, and it's clearly starting to pay off. It's worth monitoring the progress of 2013's eighth overall pick.

Sabres' Ristolainen Snaps 10-Game Point Drought

News: Rasmus Ristolainen scored an assist in Monday's shootout loss to Washington, ending a 10-game drought.
Analysis: Rasmus Ristolainen also played more than 28 minutes for the second straight game with the Sabres blue line hit with another injury, this time to Andrej Meszaros (hand). The big Finnish defenseman's minutes have yo-yoed this season but going down the stretch drive it looks like coach Ted Nolan will be leaning on him a lot, especially if Zach Bogosian (lower body) doesn't play. Ristolainen doesn't score often enough to be of any fantasy value this season, but is a blue-chipper for next year.

Sabres' Ristolainen Sets Table For Score

News: Rasmus Ristolainen notched an assist in Thursday's 3-2 shootout win over the Flyers.
Analysis: Any goal or assist should serve as a significant confidence booster for Rasmus Ristolainen, an inexperienced blueliner on a Sabres team carrying the worst goal differential in the NHL at minus-89. Ristolainen has plenty of offensive potential, but you might only see flashes of what he's capable of for the remainder of the season.

Ristolainen Sits Out Sabres' Sunday Game

News: Rasmus Ristolainen will sit out Sunday's game against the Red Wings.
Analysis: Andrej Meszaros will slot in for Rasmus Ristolainen, who the report indicates will be given a "mental break" by the Sabres on Sunday.

Sabres' Ristolainen Returns Friday

News: Rasmus Ristolainen (illness) will return to action Friday versus the Panthers, Bill Hoppe of the Olean Times Herald reports.
Analysis: Mark Pysyk was sent back to AHL Rochester, which is further proof that Rasmus Ristolainen will return. The Finnish teenager has become one of Buffalo's top defensemen, but overall, he's still not relevant in fantasy yet. He is, however, seen as a future franchise defenseman.

Sabres' Ristolainen (Illness) Back At Practice

News: Rasmus Ristolainen (illness) practiced Thursday.
Analysis: The defenseman skated Wednesday afternoon but did not play against the Lightning. However, his return to the ice Thursday is an indication that he could return Friday against the Panthers.

Sabres' Ristolainen (Illness) To Remain Out

News: Rasmus Ristolainen (illness) will remain out of the lineup Wednesday versus the Lightning, Bill Hoppe of the Olean Times Herald reports.
Analysis: Rasmus Ristolainen took part in the Sabres' optional gameday skate, but coach Ted Nolan expressed that he still wants the defenseman to take some more time off to regain strength. As a result, he'll miss his second straight game, with Tyson Strachan expected to replace him on the blue line.

Sabres' Ristolainen Skates Wednesday Morning

News: Rasmus Ristolainen (illness) was on the ice for Wednesday's optional morning skate, John Vogl of the Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: This would seemingly bode well for his chances of playing later in the evening against the Lightning, but coach Ted Nolan hasn't offered official word on his status just yet. The blueliner, who has seven points and a minus-18 rating over 36 games, was forced to sit out Monday's game versus Ottawa with the illness.

Sabres' Ristolainen Out Monday

News: Rasmus Ristolainen (illness) did not travel to Ottawa and will miss Monday's game for the Sabres, The Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: The sickness seems to be working its way around the team and Risto got it bad enough to where he'll miss at least one more game after being forced out of Saturday's contest. Mark Pysyk will take his place on the blue line.

Sabres' Ristolainen Battling Illness

News: Rasmus Ristolainen was forced from Saturday's game against the Islanders due to an illness that is making its way around the team.
Analysis: It doesn't sound very severe, but Rasmus Ristolainen simply didn't have enough energy to keep going Saturday night. He'll have Sunday off to recover, but his status for Monday's matchup with the Senators is still uncertain.

Sabres' Ristolainen Leaves With Injury

News: Rasmus Ristolainen left Saturday's game against the Islanders with an undisclosed injury and will not return, Bill Hoppe of the Olean Times Herald reports.
Analysis: No word yet on the nature or severity of the injury. The Sabres are off Monday before returning to action Monday at Ottawa.

Sabres' Ristolainen Nets Goal In Victory

News: Rasmus Ristolainen netted his second goal and first power-play marker of the season in Monday's win over the Senators.
Analysis: The 20-year-old tied his season high with four shot attempts, but don't expect it to lead to a major breakthrough. The 2013 draft choice is simply learning on the job this season, and probably won't hit his peak until he enters his mid- to late-20s. He has five points and a minus-12 rating over 31 games.

Sabres' Ristolainen Scores First

News: Rasmus Ristolainen picked up his first goal of the year and went plus-2 in Thursday's loss to the Wild.
Analysis: He opened the scoring just 1:03 into the first period with the marker, his second point of the season and his third career goal in 51 games. This is also just his second time this year finishing on the positive side of the ledger, and it improved his season plus-minus rating to minus-11. It's harsh playing for the Sabres these days, and you can't count on the hulking 20-year-old to turn things around for the franchise so soon.

Sabres' Ristolainen Notches First Point

News: Rasmus Ristolainen was credited with the second assist on Drew Stafford's goal for his first point of the season in a 3-2 loss to Edmonton on Friday.
Analysis: Rasmus Ristolainen logged the second-most ice time among Buffalo defenseman and made a beautiful stretch pass to Nicolas Deslauriers to start off the scoring play. It's Ristolainen's first point in 15 games this season. The young Finnish defenseman is a blue-chip prospect but needs more polish. He has little fantasy value this season.

Sabres "Almost Scratched" Ristolainen Last Week

News: Head coach Ted Nolan believed Rasmus Ristolainen was suffering from fatigue and considered making him a scratch last week, reports the Olean Times Herald.
Analysis: Nolan hinted that it wasn't physical fatigue that was ailing Rasmus Ristolainen, but mental fatigue, citing the "lights and action" of the NHL being overwhelming for young players. Nolan didn't say which game he considered sitting Ristolainen, but did say he came out flying on Friday. That lends to the belief that Nolan may have wanted Ristolainen to sit Tuesday vs. Carolina in the second part of a back-to-back after a 5-1 loss to Anaheim on Monday where he played a season-low 14:38 and failed to register a shot. Ristolainen is not an elite defenseman yet, but he'll get there. With the Sabres struggling, expect Nolan to juggle players in and out of the lineup all year.

Sabres' Ristolainen Drops Weight, Gains Speed

News: Rasmus Ristolainen reported to training camp at 205 pounds, 25 pounds lighter than he was the previous season, reports John Vogl of The Buffalo News.
Analysis: This is good news for the Sabres and Rasmus Ristolainen, who said he shed some of his baby fat. The 19-year-old defenseman is one of the league's top young players and over a summer of training has increased his footspeed, agility and overall strength. Ristolainen is the team's future franchise defenseman and looks more like it with each passing season. Tyler Myers may still be the team's most valuable defenseman in fantasy, but there's a good chance Ristolainen takes over that top spot by the end of the season. Ristolainen is a potential sleeper defenseman and a key target in keeper leagues, if you can live with a few more seasons of growing pains and playing on a non-playoff team.
