Sabres' Ristolainen Nets Goal In Victory

News: Rasmus Ristolainen netted his second goal and first power-play marker of the season in Monday's win over the Senators.
Analysis: The 20-year-old tied his season high with four shot attempts, but don't expect it to lead to a major breakthrough. The 2013 draft choice is simply learning on the job this season, and probably won't hit his peak until he enters his mid- to late-20s. He has five points and a minus-12 rating over 31 games.

Sabres' Ristolainen Scores First

News: Rasmus Ristolainen picked up his first goal of the year and went plus-2 in Thursday's loss to the Wild.
Analysis: He opened the scoring just 1:03 into the first period with the marker, his second point of the season and his third career goal in 51 games. This is also just his second time this year finishing on the positive side of the ledger, and it improved his season plus-minus rating to minus-11. It's harsh playing for the Sabres these days, and you can't count on the hulking 20-year-old to turn things around for the franchise so soon.

Sabres' Ristolainen Notches First Point

News: Rasmus Ristolainen was credited with the second assist on Drew Stafford's goal for his first point of the season in a 3-2 loss to Edmonton on Friday.
Analysis: Rasmus Ristolainen logged the second-most ice time among Buffalo defenseman and made a beautiful stretch pass to Nicolas Deslauriers to start off the scoring play. It's Ristolainen's first point in 15 games this season. The young Finnish defenseman is a blue-chip prospect but needs more polish. He has little fantasy value this season.

Sabres "Almost Scratched" Ristolainen Last Week

News: Head coach Ted Nolan believed Rasmus Ristolainen was suffering from fatigue and considered making him a scratch last week, reports the Olean Times Herald.
Analysis: Nolan hinted that it wasn't physical fatigue that was ailing Rasmus Ristolainen, but mental fatigue, citing the "lights and action" of the NHL being overwhelming for young players. Nolan didn't say which game he considered sitting Ristolainen, but did say he came out flying on Friday. That lends to the belief that Nolan may have wanted Ristolainen to sit Tuesday vs. Carolina in the second part of a back-to-back after a 5-1 loss to Anaheim on Monday where he played a season-low 14:38 and failed to register a shot. Ristolainen is not an elite defenseman yet, but he'll get there. With the Sabres struggling, expect Nolan to juggle players in and out of the lineup all year.

Sabres' Ristolainen Drops Weight, Gains Speed

News: Rasmus Ristolainen reported to training camp at 205 pounds, 25 pounds lighter than he was the previous season, reports John Vogl of The Buffalo News.
Analysis: This is good news for the Sabres and Rasmus Ristolainen, who said he shed some of his baby fat. The 19-year-old defenseman is one of the league's top young players and over a summer of training has increased his footspeed, agility and overall strength. Ristolainen is the team's future franchise defenseman and looks more like it with each passing season. Tyler Myers may still be the team's most valuable defenseman in fantasy, but there's a good chance Ristolainen takes over that top spot by the end of the season. Ristolainen is a potential sleeper defenseman and a key target in keeper leagues, if you can live with a few more seasons of growing pains and playing on a non-playoff team.
