Devils' Severson Picks Up Two Assists In Win

News: Damon Severson collected two helpers and recorded four shots on goal in Saturday's win over Arizona.
Analysis: While he's been inconsistent this season, the 20-year-old now has 15 points in 38 games. Averaging 22:32 of ice time, the youngster will be a fantasy asset in the coming years, but for now, he remains too up-and-down to be trusted in most shallow leagues.

Devils' Severson Gets First Point Since Return

News: Damon Severson recorded an assist in Tuesday's loss to the Wild.
Analysis: It's Damon Severson's first point in his four games since returning from a lengthy absence due to a fractured ankle. The rookie has only put four shots on net during that time and hasn't been particularly active on his own end, either, recording no hits and two blocked shots during that span. He's still an intriguing asset in keeper formats, but those in season-long leagues might be best served letting him sit on the waiver wire for now.

Devils' Severson Back From IR

News: Damon Severson (ankle) was activated from injured reserve in advance of Tuesday's game against the Predators.
Analysis: Though the Devils weren't initially expecting Damon Severson back until later in the week, he showed enough progress with his injury at Tuesday's morning skate for the medical staff to sign off on his return. He'll play in his first game since Dec. 15, likely joining Jon Merrill on the Devils' second defensive pair.

New Jersey's Severson Set To Return

News: Damon Severson (ankle) is slated to play Tuesday against the Preds, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.
Analysis: With Damon Severson in line to be activated from IR in advance of Tuesday's contest, GM Lou Lamoriello indicated that New Jersey will roll with seven blueliners on Tuesday, with forwards Michael Ryder and Martin Havlat on track to be lineup scratches.

New Jersey's Severson Nears Return

News: Damon Severson (left ankle) could return to action as soon as Tuesday's game against the Preds, Rich Chere of the Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Analysis: Damon Severson, who last suited up on Dec. 15, recorded 12 points in 32 games prior to suffering a fractured ankle. Once the 20-year-old blueliner re-establishes his health, he could re-emerge as a fantasy asset down the stretch in both daily and year-long formats.

Devils' Severson Aiming To Return Friday

News: Damon Severson took part in his first full practice with the Devils on Monday since fracturing his ankle in December, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.
Analysis: The rookie got off to a hot start to his NHL career in October with seven points in his first eight games, but he cooled off shortly thereafter and then suffered the long-term injury. He's taken nearly twice as long to recover from the fractured ankle as the Devils anticipated, but his return to practice signals that he's nearly ready to play. The Devils have ruled Damon Severson out from playing in Tuesday's game against the Predators, but the blueliner said he's targeting a return to the ice for Friday's tilt with the Blue Jackets. He'll need to increase his activity in practice over the next few days before a ruling on his status for Friday is made.

Return Not Near For Devils' Severson

News: General manager Lou Lamoriello indicated Thursday that Damon Severson (fractured left ankle) isn't close to a return to game action, Rich Chere of the Newark Star-Ledger reports. "He's only really been on the ice a little over a week," Lamiorello said. "It's a combination of rehab, conditioning, and also making sure he's 100 percent okay to get into any type of contact. It will be a while."
Analysis: The news isn't overly promising on the rookie blueliner, but Lamoriello did note that he anticipates Damon Severson will return at some point before the season ends. Unfortunately for those that had stashed Severson after his injury disrupted an impressive start to his career, it looks like he might only be able to get in just a handful of games the rest of the way.

Devils' Severson (Ankle) Resumes Skating

News: Damon Severson (ankle) skated Tuesday, but it's not known how long it will be before he's ready to practice, Tom Gulitti of the Bergen Record reports.
Analysis: Damon Severson has been out since mid-December with the injury, and this was only the second time he's been able to skate during his absence. It is still uncertain when he will actually begin to practice, so it looks like he'll miss an additional week or more.

Devils' Severson Out At Least Another Week

News: General manager Lou Lamoriello said Damon Severson (ankle) would miss at least another week, Sherry Ross of WFAN-AM 101.9 reports.
Analysis: Damon Severson underwent a X-ray on his ankle Tuesday, which didn't indicate that the blueliner had fully healed from injury. With Severson a week or more away from even skating, it seems possible that his absence could extend to late February, or even March.

Devils' Severson To Undergo X-Ray

News: Damon Severson (ankle) will have an X-ray on Tuesday but still has no timetable to resume skating, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.
Analysis: Damon Severson has already missed seven weeks of action after initially pegging a four-to-five week timetable when he suffered an ankle fracture on Dec. 18. General manager Lou Lamoriello updated the prediction in January to anticipate a return to skating in early February, but at this point it seems he won't be returning in the near future. More news about the 20-year-old's status should be available after seeing the results of Tuesday's X-ray.

Devils' Severson 2-3 Weeks Away Off Skating

News: General manager Lou Lamoriello said Thursday that Damon Severson (ankle) isn't expected to begin skating for another two or three weeks, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.
Analysis: The Devils initially pegged Damon Severson to miss four-to-five weeks back on Dec. 18 due to the non-displaced ankle fracture, but five weeks has already passed since that time, and the young blueliner is still far off from returning. Severson underwent an additional X-ray earlier this week to track his progress, and while he figures to have his cast removed soon, he's still on track to miss some more time. Because Severson will likely have missed over two months once he's cleared to resume practicing, he'll likely need to go to the minors on a conditioning assignment before he's activated from IR.

Devils' Severson Making Progress In Recovery

News: Damon Severson (ankle) has been walking around some, but has yet to get back on skates, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.
Analysis: The fact that Damon Severson is now up and moving on his injured ankle is certainly a promising development. However, Severson is still less than three weeks into his four-to-five-week recovery timetable and has yet to get back onto the ice. Expect Severson to make a return sometime in late January.

Devils Move Severson To IR

News: Damon Severson (ankle) was placed on injured reserve Thursday.
Analysis: The move frees up a roster spot for the Devils while Damon Severson remains unavailable until at least late January with the hairline fracture in his left ankle. Look for the Devils to fill the opening by activating Adam Larsson, who is nearly fully recovered from his bout with the mumps.

Devils' Severson Out 4-5 Weeks

News: Damon Severson was diagnosed with a non-displaced hairline fracture in his left ankle Thursday and will miss the next four-to-five weeks, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.
Analysis: Though his offensive production has tailed off dramatically since the end of October, Damon Severson was still an important cog on the Devils' top pairing, averaging 23:02 of ice time per game. The rookie apparently first suffered the injury after taking a shot to his ankle in a Dec. 6 game against the Capitals, but played through the fracture until he began to experience significant swelling Wednesday. Though he won't require surgery, Severson will still be out until mid-to-late January, forcing coach Pete DeBoer to turn to Eric Gelinas, Seth Helgeson and Adam Larsson to assume more prominent roles on the New Jersey blue line.

Davils' Severson (Lower Body) Scratched Wednesday

News: Damon Severson will not play Wednesday due to a lower body injury.
Analysis: Damon Severson was a bit of a surprise scratch, as no signs of his potential absence surfaced until right before game time. He'll look to return Friday night against the Lightning.

Devils' Severson Adds Assist In Shootout Loss

News: Damon Severson notched an assist on Stephen Gionta's second goal of the season in Tuesday's 3-2 shootout loss to the Blackhawks.
Analysis: The young defenseman has contributed well to the Devils' offense this season, ranking second on the team in points from a defenseman. He has scored four goals and seven assists in 29 games, though most of that production came in October.

Devils' Severson Contributes Two Assists Friday

News: Damon Severson snapped an 11-game scoring drought Friday, contributing two assists in a loss to Detroit.
Analysis: Despite the recent drought, Damon Severson has still produced four goals and 10 points in 23 games this season, to go with a plus-3 rating. The 20-year-old rookie is averaging 22:55 of ice time and playing on the top power-play unit, meaning more offense should be on the way. Now that he ended the slump, look for Severson to get back on track with his production. Expect a season in the 30-40 point range from the promising youngster.

Devils' Severson In Midst Of Slump

News: Damon Severson finished with a team-worst minus-3 rating in Saturday's loss to the Avalanche.
Analysis: Damon Severson looks as though he'll be a mainstay on the New Jersey blue line for years to come, but like most young defensemen, he'll be prone to the occasional offensive drought. He currently finds himself in that sort of dry spell, as the 20-year-old has provided just one point over his last 10 games.

Devils' Severson Continues Strong Play

News: Damon Severson's strong, early-season play continued Saturday when he scored a goal and added an assist in a 3-2 overtime win over Ottawa.
Analysis: He's also been great in his own zone, so those Shea Weber comparisons seem apt. His seven points include four goals and have all come in his last seven games. He'll falter at some point, but we're putting an auto-roll tag on him for now. He's been very, very good.

Devils' Severson Delivering On Offense

News: Damon Severson scored two even-strength goals on a game-high eight shots in Thursday's loss to Washington.
Analysis: The rookie's been on fire in the early going, doing something positive in every game even if he doesn't get on the scoresheet. With three goals, an assist and a plus-5 rating through four contests, he's come out of nowhere to be one of the league's most valuable defensemen in the early going.

Devils' Severson Gets First NHL Points

News: Damon Severson delivered a goal and assist in Saturday's 5-1 win over Florida. The points are the first of his NHL career.
Analysis: He does have offensive upside, but he is also young. So temper your expectations. Still, he could have a bright future with the horned hellions.

Devils' Severson Earns Opening Night Spot

News: Damon Severson has made the Devils' Opening Night roster, Rich Chere of the Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Analysis: After an impressive training camp, Damon Severson appears poised to enter the season in a pairing with Andy Greene. The 20-year-old only has two previous games of professional experience under his belt, but the offensive upside he showed at the junior level could make him a cornerstone player in the Devils' top four for seasons to come. Just don't expect him to make a strong push for much fantasy consideration in his first taste of NHL action.
