Avs' Berra Stops 41 For Shutout Shootout Win

News: Reto Berra stopped all 41 shots sent his way through regulation and overtime Thursday, then turned aside two more in the shootout to take home a 1-0 win over the Jets.
Analysis: He and Ondrej Pavelec dueled to a standstill until the shootout, in which Pavelec gave up goals to Colorado's first two shooters. This was almost certainly Reto Berra's final start of the season, so he's closing his campaign on a high note, having posted save marks of .946 or better in four of his final five appearances.

Avs Go With Berra On Thursday

News: Reto Berra is slated to start Thursday's game against the Jets.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov will draw starts Tuesday and Saturday, as the Avs' season winds down, with Reto Berra set to face the Jets -- who are battling to stay alive in the postseason hunt -- on Thursday. In his last start, Berra stopped 35 of 37 shots in a 4-2 win over the Ducks this past Friday.

Avs' Berra Gets Win In Anaheim

News: Reto Berra stopped 35 of 37 shots in a 4-2 win against the Ducks on Friday.
Analysis: Reto Berra limited the Ducks to just two goals on 37 shots, yielding a rare road win in Anaheim. Both of Anaheim's goals came in the first period, but once the second period started, Berra was lights out, stopping all 26 remaining shots and earned his fourth win on the season. Berra has made four appearances in the last two weeks, allowing two goals or fewer in three of those appearances, and will look to continue that success in at least one more start before the end of the regular season.

Avs' Berra Confirmed For Friday

News: Coach Patrick Roy reiterated after Wednesday's loss to the Sharks that he intends to stick with Reto Berra in goal for Friday's game against the Ducks, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Roy has opted to stick with a short-term goalie rotation the rest of the way with the Avalanche essentially eliminated from postseason contention, allowing for equitable work between Reto Berra and Semyon Varlamov the rest of the way. Berra, who has appeared in three of the Avs' last five games, will make a second consecutive start Friday before making what is expected to be his final turn of the season April 9 against the Jets.

Avs' Berra Takes Loss Wednesday

News: Reto Berra gave up three goals on 28 shots in a 5-1 loss to the Sharks on Wednesday. The other two goals were empty-netters.
Analysis: Reto Berra dropped the ball a bit in this one after two consecutive one-goal games over in his last two outings. He's won just three times in 17 appearances this year -- posting a .905 save percentage and 2.98 GAA -- but is already confirmed to be starting again Friday in Anaheim in favor of workhorse Semyon Varlamov. Things won't be much easier against the first-place Ducks, so tread lightly if you're considering him for a spot start.

Berra To Start Next Two Games For Avs

News: Reto Berra will be in the crease for the Avs' next two games Wednesday in San Jose and Friday in Anaheim, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: The back-to-back starts on tap for Reto Berra are an admission by the Avalanche that the team doesn't view itself as playoff contenders, which seems to be a fairly reasonable assessment given their eight-point deficit from the final wild-card spot out West. Berra delivered an excellent outing in his spot start last week against the Canucks, and with Semyon Varlamov and Calvin Pickard having previously shouldered the bulk of the duties in goal for the Avalanche this season, it makes sense for the team to take a longer look at Berra. While Berra won't make for a strong daily option in either of his starts, those in weekly leagues mining for wins and saves may want to take a look at the 28-year-old, who has a 3-3-1 record, 2.97 GAA, and .906 save percentage over his 16 appearances.

Avs' Berra Stops 33 In Victory

News: Reto Berra allowed just a single tally on 34 shots Thursday in a 4-1 win over Vancouver.
Analysis: This was Reto Berra's first start in more than four months, dating all the way back to Nov. 25, though he did make six relief appearances in the interim. But a fine outing it was, coming as it did on the heels of a very strong relief appearance Wednesday in Edmonton. With nothing left for the Avs to play for, they may roll Berra out a few more times in the season's final games as they try to evaluate their backup situation for next year.

Avs' Berra Getting Start Thursday

News: Reto Berra will be in the crease for Thursday's game against the Canucks, Terry Frei of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Though coach Patrick Roy's initial schedule called for Varlamov to get the start Thursday, that plan changed when the goalie was pulled midway through the first period of Wednesday's loss to the Oilers after allowing three goals on seven shots. Reto Berra played very well in relief of Varlamov with 26 saves on 27 shots, and with the Avs' playoff hopes effectively dashed with the loss, Berra could get some more work down the stretch. Berra has essentially been in Roy's doghouse all season, but with nine games remaining on the schedule, it's a good time for the organization to figure out what the lightly used netminder can do.

Avs' Berra Performs Well In Relief Appearance

News: Reto Berra saved 26 of 27 shots in a relief effort against Edmonton on Wednesday. The Avalanche lost, 4-3.
Analysis: Reto Berra replaced Semyon Varlamov with 10:24 remaining in the first period. It was Berra's first appearance since March 10 and could potentially be his last of the season, depending on how coach Patrick Roy and his staff approach the final nine games of the season.

Avs' Berra Cleans Up In Relief

News: Reto Berra let in two goals on 22 shots in relief of Calvin Pickard in Tuesday's loss to the Kings.
Analysis: Though No. 1 goalie Semyon Varlamov missed Tuesday's game with a groin injury, coach Patrick Roy decided to go with AHL call-up Pickard for the start, just as he frequently did when groin problems set in for Varlamov earlier in the season. Reto Berra still hasn't made a start since Nov. 20, but with Pickard struggling Tuesday and Varlamov uncertain to be ready to go for Thursday's tilt with the Devils, Berra's number might finally be called.

Avs' Berra Sees Relief Duty Sunday

News: Reto Berra made three saves on four shots in relief of an injured Semyon Varlamov in Sunday's win over Minnesota.
Analysis: Varlamov was credited with the win, stopping 29 of 30 shots before leaving the game late in the third period with an unspecified lower-body issue. Reto Berra, who hasn't played a full game since Nov.20, saw his save percentage drop to .888 on the season. Even if Varlamov's injury does happen to be serious, the team would be more likely to roll with AHL stud Calvin Pickard, who has a .936 save percentage in 15 NHL appearances this season.

Avs' Berra Sparkles In Relief

News: Reto Berra played the final 16:59 of Tuesday's loss to the Predators, stopping all 11 shots he faced.
Analysis: Reto Berra has relieved Semyon Varlamov in two of the last five contests, stopping 22 of 23 shots. Though Berra hasn't seen a start since December, he should get a nod in the near future, as Varlamov seems to be maxed out and in need of a night off. A back-to-back set this weekend against either the Stars or Wild would be a good opportunity for the Avalanche to get Berra some work.

Avs' Berra Sees Rare Duty Monday

News: Reto Berra manned the net for the third period of Monday's win over the Coyotes, stopping 11 of 12 shots.
Analysis: With the Avs holding a commanding 5-1 lead and the Coyotes only mustering five shots on goal for the first 40 minutes, coach Patrick Roy decided it was a good opportunity for Reto Berra to pick up some work in relief of Semyon Varlamov. Berra, who has seen his opportunities dry up due to poor performances in practices and his previous starts, played for the first time since Dec. 5. The Avalanche plan to ride Varlamov heavily as they attempt to chase down a playoff spot, so don't expect Berra to parlay Monday's competent relief outing into much additional duty.

Avs' Berra Returns From Conditioning Assignment

News: Reto Berra was recalled from his conditioning assignment at AHL Lake Erie on Sunday.
Analysis: The goalie had spent a full week in the minors in order to give Calvin Pickard the opportunity to pick up a start. Reto Berra made three starts during his stay with Lake Erie, posting an unimpressive 2.98 GAA and .889 save percentage. The Avalanche will carry three goalies for the time being, with Berra representing the team's third option.

Avs' Berra On Conditioning Assignment

News: Updating a previous report, Reto Berra was sent to AHL Lake Erie on Saturday as part of a conditioning assignment, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Rather than exposing Reto Berra to the waiver wire due to his one-way contract, he'll instead pick up time in the minors as part of the conditioning assignment, which can last up two weeks. The Avs have a back-to-back set during the upcoming week and preferred to give the newly-recalled Calvin Pickard a start for Tuesday's game rather than Berra, who has irked coach Patrick Roy with his poor practice habits.

Avs Berra Being Sent Down

News: Coach Patrick Roy said after Saturday's game that Reto Berra will be sent down to AHL Lake Erie, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Since Reto Berra is on a one-way deal, he'd have to clear waivers to report to the minors, though it's possible the Avalanche could send him to Lake Erie under the guise of a conditioning assignment. Either way, it's clear Roy doesn't trust him to provide serviceable play in the net for the Avalanche, so don't expect him to log much action with the big club for the foreseeable future.

Avs' Berra Sees Relief Duty Friday

News: Reto Berra stopped six of seven shots in relief of Semyon Varlamov Friday against the Jets.
Analysis: Reto Berra has been a disaster of late, allowing at least three goals in each of his last four games prior to Friday. While he won't get credit for the loss Friday, Berra is 2-2-1 on the season with an awful .882 save percentage and 3.57 GAA. While Semyon Varlamov is the undisputed starter in Colorado, you can definitely do better than Ramo for a backup goalie in fantasy.

Avs Pull Berra Early

News: Reto Berra was pulled after playing just 10:53 in Tuesday's game versus the Coyotes, giving up three goals on eight shots. Calvin Pickard was perfect in his place, stopping 25 of 25 shots to lead the Avs to a comeback win.
Analysis: Looking down the season stat line, it becomes quite clear that Reto Berra is about as low-end as NHL goalies come. The Avs must be hungering for Semyon Varlamov to come back from his groin issue.

Avs' Berra Will Start Tuesday

News: Reto Berra will start Tuesday's game against the Coyotes.
Analysis: Reto Berra will get the start in the first of back-to-back games Tuesday for the Avs, as Semyon Varlamov is expected to take Wednesday's divisional matchup with the Blackhawks.

Avs' Berra Gets The Yank Saturday

News: Reto Berra was yanked Saturday against the Hurricanes after giving up three goals on 10 shots.
Analysis: Calvin Pickard relieved Reto Berra in the first period, stopping all 17 shots he faced to help the Avs comeback to defeat the Canes. Berra has struggled this season, posting a 2-2-1 record with a .895 save percentage and 3.16 GAA. With the way Pickard played Saturday, there is a chance Berra could get sent down to the AHL once Semyon Varlamov (groin) returns. Even if the Avs decide to keep Berra as the backup, he hasn't done anything to show he can be counted on in fantasy.

Avs' Berra In Net Saturday

News: Reto Berra will start between the pipes Saturday against the Hurricanes.
Analysis: Reto Berra surrendered three goals on 23 shots Thursday against the Capitals, but with Semyon Varlamov still dealing with a groin injury, he'll get the start again Saturday. He will enter the matchup against the Caps sporting a 4-5-4 record with a 2.95 GAA and .918 save percentage.

Berra Takes Loss For Avs

News: Reto Berra was tagged for three goals on 23 shots in Thursday's loss to visiting Washington.
Analysis: Making his first start since Nov. 8 due to Semyon Varlamov's groin issue, Reto Berra turned in the kind of mediocre outing we've grown used to from him. He'll have some value if Varlamov remains out, but not that much, as the Avs have struggled all year and Berra is not the most talented of netminders.

Avs' Berra To Fill In For Varlamov On Thursday

News: Reto Berra will man the crease Thursday against the Capitals, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: With Semyon Varlamov day-to-day with a groin injury, Reto Berra will steps in as the team's new No. 1 goalie for the time being. The Avalanche will reassess Varlamov in a couple days to gauge how he's progressing, but because the goalie missed a week with the injury earlier this season, it wouldn't be a surprise if the Avalanche proceeding with more caution this time around. If that's the case, Berra could enjoy a steady diet of starts, as the newly-recalled Calvin Pickard is more of an emergency option than a viable challenger to Berra.

Avs' Berra Takes Loss Saturday

News: Reto Berra allowed four goals on 27 shot attempts to take the loss Saturday against the Flyers.
Analysis: Reto Berra was fairly mediocre while making his second straight start for the Avs, falling behind by four goals in the game's first 40 minutes before a late offensive rally by his mates made the final score respectable. Coach Patrick Roy only awarded Berra the back-to-back starts as a measure to give Semyon Varlamov an extended rest, so it doesn't look like a larger role is in the cards for Berra at this time.

Avs' Berra Starting Saturday

News: Reto Berra will start Saturday's game against the Flyers, the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Reto Berra will start in net for the second straight game Saturday. He made 35 saves on 38 shots in Thursday's 4-3 win over the Maple Leafs, so head coach Patrick Roy will show confidence in the netminder by going right back to him.
