Avs' Berra Stops 32 In Loss

News: Reto Berra had 32 saves on Tuesday, but allowed four goals in an OT loss to the Panthers.
Analysis: Reto Berra had been dealing with a sore neck, but felt well enough to start in place of Semyon Varlamov, who has also been nursing an injury. Varlamov is expected to return from injured reserve and will likely get the start in Friday's contest against the Canucks, spelling an end to Berra's brief run as the Avs' No. 1 starter.

Avalanche Go With Berra On Tuesday

News: Reto Berra (neck) will be the starting goaltender in Tuesday's game against the Panthers.
Analysis: Reto Berra has dealt with a sore neck since being injured last Thursday, but it appears he is feeling good enough to play Tuesday. Berra has played just one full contest this season, but he has played well when he has been on the ice, giving up just one goal in 82:31 TOI.

Avalanche's Berra (Neck) Probable For Tuesday

News: Reto Berra (neck) is expected to make the start against the Panthers on Tuesday, Mike Chambers of The Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Reto Berra suffered a neck injury during Thursday's loss to the Senators and has been held off the ice since. While still not official, Berra was able to practice Monday and seems poised to make a return to the net Tuesday.

Colorado's Berra To Miss Saturday's Game

News: Reto Berra (neck) will be scratched for Saturday's game against the Canadiens, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Calvin Pickard will be between the pipes Saturday. The Avalanche are still labeling Reto Berra's injury as a day-to-day concern, but he was limited to off-ice work at Saturday's morning skate. It's too early to say whether or not he'll be available for the Avs' next tilt with the Panthers on Tuesday, but with Semyon Varlamov (groin) likely to return to action later next week, it appears Berra won't be healthy enough to take full advantage of his temporary run as the team's No. 1 starter.

Avs' Berra Suffering From Head Or Neck Injury

News: Reto Berra is believed to have suffered a head or neck injury during Thursday's loss to the Senators, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: The injury occurred when Ottawa's Mark Stone collided with Reto Berra in the crease just three minutes into the game. He was the second Avs goalie to fall victim to injury that day, as Semyon Varlamov was placed on injured reserve just hours before the game with a bothersome groin. The Avalanche didn't issue an update on Berra's condition after the game, but if the injury prevents him from missing further action, the Avs will have to cast their lot with fresh call-up Calvin Pickard in goal. Pickard made his NHL debut in relief of Berra on Thursday, stopping just 23 of 27 shot attempts.

Avs' Berra Leaves With Leg Injury

News: Reto Berra left Thursday's start against the Senators with an apparent right leg injury, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: The news represents a doomsday scenario for the Avs, who placed Semyon Varlamov on injured reserve earlier in the day and were counting on Reto Berra to hold down the fort for at least the next three games. The severity of his injury isn't known yet, but he seemed to be in a lot of pain after colliding with Ottawa's Mark Stone. The recently recalled Calvin Pickard, who wasn't even at morning skate earlier in the day, will take over in the net for Berra while the Avalanche await word on his prognosis.

Avs' Berra In Net Thursday

News: After the Avalanche placed Semyon Varlamov (groin) on injured reserve earlier in the day, Reto Berra will be called upon to make the start Thursday night against the Senators, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Though Varlamov's groin injury is considered minor, the move to injured reserve ensures that he won't be available until at least Oct. 24 against the Canucks, likely guaranteeing Reto Berra a run of three consecutive starts. The added short-term workload for Berra could make him a worthwhile speculative add, as he'll likely be able to rack up some saves and perhaps steal a win or two during his run as the Avs' top goalie. However, Berra's career 2.97 GAA and .896 save percentage may make him toxic for fantasy owners looking to solidify their ratios.

Avs' Berra Could Get Starting Nod Thursday

News: Reto Berra could make the start in goal Thursday against the Senators if Semyon Varlamov (groin) is unable to play, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Varlamov was in the starter's crease at morning skate, but coach Patrick Roy said that if the groin injury is still bothering him during pregame warmups, Reto Berra would likely be called upon to make his second start in three games. Berra came away with the win earlier this week against the Bruins, stopping 27 of 28 shots in the 2-1 victory.

Berra Guides Avs To First Win

News: Reto Berra stopped all but one of the 28 shots he faced in Monday's win over Boston.
Analysis: Reto Berra was spectacular Monday, helping the Avalanche pick up their first win of the season. Semyon Varlamov is Colorado's clear starting goalie, but Berra could still see a decent amount of starts as the backup. Berra went 0-1-1 with the Avalanche last season, posting a .781 save percentage and 5.85 GAA.

Avs' Berra Will Start Monday

News: Reto Berra will get the call between the pipes Monday against the Bruins, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Reto Berra will get the call in the first of back-to-back games for Colorado on Monday. The Avs have yet to score this season, so they'll be looking to break out Monday and give Berra some support.

Avs' Berra Saves 10 In Relief

News: Reto Berra made 10 saves in relief of Semyon Varlamov in Thursday's season-opening loss to the Wild.
Analysis: The defense set Varlamov up for failure Thursday, as the Wild outshot the Avs by a 38-13 count before coach Patrick Roy mercifully pulled him. Reto Berra was able to clot the bleeding by not ceding any further goals to the Wild, but he won't enter the conversation for the starting job. After posting an ugly 2.95 GAA and .897 save percentage over his 29 appearances with the Flames last season, Berra looks like one of the league's weaker No. 2 goalies.

Avs' Berra Pulled Early In Friday's Loss

News: Reto Berra's second start with Colorado was almost as disastrous as the first, as he was pulled after allowing two goals on five shots in a 5-1 loss to the Sharks.
Analysis: After allowing five goals on 27 shots to the Jets on March 19, many thought Reto Berra couldn't fare any worse against the Sharks; they were wrong. With the Avs fighting for the Central Division title in the final weekend of the season, coach Patrick Roy decided he wanted to see Berra one last time this year as J.S. Giguere -- not Berra -- will be dressing as the backup to Semyon Varlamov for the playoffs. The move turned out to be a potentially costly one for Roy, as his third-string netminder now has an atrocious .781 save percentage and 5.83 GAA with the Avs and they now need to beat Anaheim on Sunday to guarantee the division crown.

Avs' Berra To Start Friday

News: Reto Berra is slated to start Friday's road game against San Jose, the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: With the Avs currently juggling three goalies, Reto Berra is scheduled to make just his second start since coming over from Calgary at the trade deadline 17 games ago. He was lit up for five goals on 27 shots by the Jets on March 19, but will be counted on to bounce back strong by the Avs who find themselves gunning for the Central Division title in the final week of the season. Colorado's starter for Sunday's regular season finale in Anaheim is still yet to be determined by coach Patrick Roy, so Berra could garner some consideration if plays well against the Sharks - especially if the Avs are able to lock up a desirable playoff seed by then.

Avs' Berra To Face Sharks Next Week

News: Reto Berra is scheduled to start next Thursday's game against the Sharks, the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Coach Patrick Roy said Thursday that he intends to rest Semyon Varlamov next week, and will give Reto Berra and fellow backup Jean-Sebastien Giguere at least one final start each prior to the start of the playoffs. With Giguere expected to retire at the end of this season, Berra is poised to become the Avs' full-time backup netminder behind Varlamov beginning next season.

Avs' Berra Won't Dress For Playoffs

News: Reto Berra will not dress for the playoffs following the news that head coach Patrick Roy will go with J.S. Giguere as the backup in the playoffs, Adrian Dater of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Reto Berra has made just one start since being traded to the Avs on March 5. He didn't take advantage of his opportunity either, allowing five goals on 27 shots. Giguere's experience may have also been a factor in the decision.

Berra Suffers Overtime Loss In Avs Debut

News: Reto Berra made his first start with the Avs on Tuesday, stopping just 22-of-27 shots in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Jets.
Analysis: The 27-year-old rookie netminder hadn't played in 9 games, so his dreary .815 save percentage in his Avalanche debut can be chalked up to a combination of both rust and nerves. The Avs have floundered on the goaltending front lately, with Reto Berra, J.S. Giguere and No. 1 starter Semyon Varlamov each recording losses in the last four games. Even worse, the Avs skaters pitched in a plentiful 11 goals in the three losses to Anaheim, Montreal and Winnipeg, so coach Patrick Roy will be none too pleased with the squandering of offense by his trio of backstoppers. He'll almost certainly turn to the 34-win Varlamov to right the ship Friday against the surging Bruins who have won nine straight.

Avs Turn To Berra On Wednesday

News: Reto Berra will start Wednesday's game against the Jets, the Avs' official site reports.
Analysis: Rolling with Reto Berra (whose last start came on March 3 while he was with Calgary) on Wednesday will give Semyon Varlamov another game off, after Jean-Sebastien Giguere drew the start for the Avs against the Canadiens on Tuesday.

Avs' Berra Signs 3-Year Extension

News: Reto Berra has signed a three-year extension with the Avalanche, the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Expected to make his Avs debut Wednesday (March 19) against the Jets, Reto Berra gets a contract before ever suiting up for his new team. He may not see another start this season, but with Jean Sebastien-Giguere's contract expiring at the end of the campaign, Berra makes sense as the Avs' No. 2 goaltender of the future.

Berra To Make First Start With Avs Next Week

News: Reto Berra will make his first start with the Avalanche next Wednesday against the Jets, Adrian Dater of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Coach Patrick Roy will use the Avs' back-to-back next week against the Canadiens and Jets to give starting goalie Semyon Varlamov some needed rest, with Jean-Sebastien Giguere getting the nod vs. Montreal. Giguere's presence on the roster hurts Reto Berra's chances of picking up much spare duty behind Varlamov, but it seems apparent Berra is viewed as the No. 2 of the future between the two backups. Giguere has previously suggested that he might retire after the season, when his contract will expire.

Berra Traded To Avs

News: The Flames have sent Reto Berra to the Avalanche in exchange for a second-round choice in the 2014 draft, TSN.ca reports.
Analysis: The 27-year-old Reto Berra played in 29 games for the Flames prior to the trade, recording a 9-17-2 record, with a 2.95 GAA and .897 save percentage. He'll bolster the Avs' goaltending depth, with veteran Jean-Sebastien Giguere's deal set to expire after the season, the Denver Post reports.

Flames' Berra Lets In Three In Loss

News: Reto Berra stopped 24 of the 27 shots he faced in a loss to the Wild on Monday.
Analysis: Reto Berra had been enjoying a nice run of play, having let in two goals or less in his four starts before this one. However, he still only has a .897 save percentage on the season, and that is simply bad.

Flames' Berra Will Start Monday

News: Reto Berra will start between the pipes Monday against the Wild, Roger Millions of Sportsnet reports.
Analysis: Reto Berra's 9-16-2 record isn't great, but he has been playing better of late. He has won three of his last five starts, giving up just nine total goals over that span.

Berra Stones Oilers As Flames Steal A Win

News: Reto Berra stopped 21 of the 22 shots he saw Saturday to claim his ninth win of the campaign, a 2-1 overtime victory at Edmonton.
Analysis: His season-long numbers (2.94, .898) are nothing to get excited about, but there are signs that he's turning his season around. In his last four starts, he's posted an impressive 1.51, .941 while going just 2-2-0 due to an anemic Calgary offense. We don't recommend him as a front-line starter unless you're desperate or you play with some unusual league rules, but don't write him off as a long-term prospect.

Flames' Berra To Start Saturday

News: Reto Berra will start in goal Saturday against the Oilers.
Analysis: Reto Berra has had a tough go of it this season (8-16-2 record, .896 save percentage), but he did end the first half on somewhat of a high note, with three wins in his last six starts. Also, he's been very good in three starts against Edmonton this season, allowing just five goals on 81 shots (1.66 GAA).

Flames' Berra Outstanding In Loss

News: Reto Berra only allowed one goal on 31 shot attempts in Friday's 1-0 loss to Sweden.
Analysis: Reto Berra was brilliant between the pipes against a solid Sweden offense. He didn't yield a goal until into the third period. The Swiss also have Jonas Hiller as an option in net, so they will have a decision to make for Saturday's pivotal matchup with the Czech Republic.
