Avs' Berra Sees Relief Duty Friday

News: Reto Berra stopped six of seven shots in relief of Semyon Varlamov Friday against the Jets.
Analysis: Reto Berra has been a disaster of late, allowing at least three goals in each of his last four games prior to Friday. While he won't get credit for the loss Friday, Berra is 2-2-1 on the season with an awful .882 save percentage and 3.57 GAA. While Semyon Varlamov is the undisputed starter in Colorado, you can definitely do better than Ramo for a backup goalie in fantasy.

Avs Pull Berra Early

News: Reto Berra was pulled after playing just 10:53 in Tuesday's game versus the Coyotes, giving up three goals on eight shots. Calvin Pickard was perfect in his place, stopping 25 of 25 shots to lead the Avs to a comeback win.
Analysis: Looking down the season stat line, it becomes quite clear that Reto Berra is about as low-end as NHL goalies come. The Avs must be hungering for Semyon Varlamov to come back from his groin issue.

Avs' Berra Will Start Tuesday

News: Reto Berra will start Tuesday's game against the Coyotes.
Analysis: Reto Berra will get the start in the first of back-to-back games Tuesday for the Avs, as Semyon Varlamov is expected to take Wednesday's divisional matchup with the Blackhawks.

Avs' Berra Gets The Yank Saturday

News: Reto Berra was yanked Saturday against the Hurricanes after giving up three goals on 10 shots.
Analysis: Calvin Pickard relieved Reto Berra in the first period, stopping all 17 shots he faced to help the Avs comeback to defeat the Canes. Berra has struggled this season, posting a 2-2-1 record with a .895 save percentage and 3.16 GAA. With the way Pickard played Saturday, there is a chance Berra could get sent down to the AHL once Semyon Varlamov (groin) returns. Even if the Avs decide to keep Berra as the backup, he hasn't done anything to show he can be counted on in fantasy.

Avs' Berra In Net Saturday

News: Reto Berra will start between the pipes Saturday against the Hurricanes.
Analysis: Reto Berra surrendered three goals on 23 shots Thursday against the Capitals, but with Semyon Varlamov still dealing with a groin injury, he'll get the start again Saturday. He will enter the matchup against the Caps sporting a 4-5-4 record with a 2.95 GAA and .918 save percentage.

Berra Takes Loss For Avs

News: Reto Berra was tagged for three goals on 23 shots in Thursday's loss to visiting Washington.
Analysis: Making his first start since Nov. 8 due to Semyon Varlamov's groin issue, Reto Berra turned in the kind of mediocre outing we've grown used to from him. He'll have some value if Varlamov remains out, but not that much, as the Avs have struggled all year and Berra is not the most talented of netminders.

Avs' Berra To Fill In For Varlamov On Thursday

News: Reto Berra will man the crease Thursday against the Capitals, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: With Semyon Varlamov day-to-day with a groin injury, Reto Berra will steps in as the team's new No. 1 goalie for the time being. The Avalanche will reassess Varlamov in a couple days to gauge how he's progressing, but because the goalie missed a week with the injury earlier this season, it wouldn't be a surprise if the Avalanche proceeding with more caution this time around. If that's the case, Berra could enjoy a steady diet of starts, as the newly-recalled Calvin Pickard is more of an emergency option than a viable challenger to Berra.

Avs' Berra Takes Loss Saturday

News: Reto Berra allowed four goals on 27 shot attempts to take the loss Saturday against the Flyers.
Analysis: Reto Berra was fairly mediocre while making his second straight start for the Avs, falling behind by four goals in the game's first 40 minutes before a late offensive rally by his mates made the final score respectable. Coach Patrick Roy only awarded Berra the back-to-back starts as a measure to give Semyon Varlamov an extended rest, so it doesn't look like a larger role is in the cards for Berra at this time.

Avs' Berra Starting Saturday

News: Reto Berra will start Saturday's game against the Flyers, the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Reto Berra will start in net for the second straight game Saturday. He made 35 saves on 38 shots in Thursday's 4-3 win over the Maple Leafs, so head coach Patrick Roy will show confidence in the netminder by going right back to him.

Berra, Avs Come Away With Shootout Win

News: Reto Berra stopped 35 of 38 in Thursday's shootout win over the Maple Leafs.
Analysis: Of course, things wouldn't have had to go to a shootout if Reto Berra hadn't given up the game-tying goal to Richard Panik with 1:16 remaining in the third period. Don't expect Berra's second win of the year to gain him too many extra starts, as Semyon Varlamov will likely return to the net Saturday in Philadelphia.

Avs To Start Berra On Thursday Instead Of Saturday

News: Updating a previous report, Reto Berra will be between the pipes Thursday against the Maple Leafs, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: The Avalanche initially planned to have Reto Berra make his next start Saturday against the Flyers, but changed course after No. 1 netminder Semyon Varlamov was blasted for five goals in Tuesday's loss to the Canucks. Berra has played well over his four appearances this season, but he'll get the starting nod strictly as a measure to give Varlamov some rest. Expect Berra's usage to remain relatively scarce this season.

Avs' Berra Will Start On Saturday

News: Reto Berra will be the starting goaltender in Saturday's game against the Flyers, the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Reto Berra will be making his first start since Oct. 21, when he stopped 32 of 36 shots in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Florida Panthers. With Semyon Varlamov expected to start on Thursday against the Maple Leafs, Berra does not appear to doing anything more than giving Varlamov rest on Saturday.

Avs' Berra Stops 32 In Loss

News: Reto Berra had 32 saves on Tuesday, but allowed four goals in an OT loss to the Panthers.
Analysis: Reto Berra had been dealing with a sore neck, but felt well enough to start in place of Semyon Varlamov, who has also been nursing an injury of his own (groin). Varlamov is expected to return from injured reserve and will likely get the start in Friday's contest against the Canucks, spelling an end to Berra's brief run as the Avs' No. 1 starter.

Avalanche Go With Berra On Tuesday

News: Reto Berra (neck) will be the starting goaltender in Tuesday's game against the Panthers.
Analysis: Reto Berra has dealt with a sore neck since being injured last Thursday, but it appears he is feeling good enough to play Tuesday. Berra has played just one full contest this season, but he has played well when he has been on the ice, giving up just one goal in 82:31 TOI.

Avalanche's Berra (Neck) Probable For Tuesday

News: Reto Berra (neck) is expected to make the start against the Panthers on Tuesday, Mike Chambers of The Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Reto Berra suffered a neck injury during Thursday's loss to the Senators and has been held off the ice since. While still not official, Berra was able to practice Monday and seems poised to make a return to the net Tuesday.

Colorado's Berra To Miss Saturday's Game

News: Reto Berra (neck) will be scratched for Saturday's game against the Canadiens, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Calvin Pickard will be between the pipes Saturday. The Avalanche are still labeling Reto Berra's injury as a day-to-day concern, but he was limited to off-ice work at Saturday's morning skate. It's too early to say whether or not he'll be available for the Avs' next tilt with the Panthers on Tuesday, but with Semyon Varlamov (groin) likely to return to action later next week, it appears Berra won't be healthy enough to take full advantage of his temporary run as the team's No. 1 starter.

Avs' Berra Suffering From Head Or Neck Injury

News: Reto Berra is believed to have suffered a head or neck injury during Thursday's loss to the Senators, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: The injury occurred when Ottawa's Mark Stone collided with Reto Berra in the crease just three minutes into the game. He was the second Avs goalie to fall victim to injury that day, as Semyon Varlamov was placed on injured reserve just hours before the game with a bothersome groin. The Avalanche didn't issue an update on Berra's condition after the game, but if the injury prevents him from missing further action, the Avs will have to cast their lot with fresh call-up Calvin Pickard in goal. Pickard made his NHL debut in relief of Berra on Thursday, stopping just 23 of 27 shot attempts.

Avs' Berra Leaves With Leg Injury

News: Reto Berra left Thursday's start against the Senators with an apparent right leg injury, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: The news represents a doomsday scenario for the Avs, who placed Semyon Varlamov on injured reserve earlier in the day and were counting on Reto Berra to hold down the fort for at least the next three games. The severity of his injury isn't known yet, but he seemed to be in a lot of pain after colliding with Ottawa's Mark Stone. The recently recalled Calvin Pickard, who wasn't even at morning skate earlier in the day, will take over in the net for Berra while the Avalanche await word on his prognosis.

Avs' Berra In Net Thursday

News: After the Avalanche placed Semyon Varlamov (groin) on injured reserve earlier in the day, Reto Berra will be called upon to make the start Thursday night against the Senators, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Though Varlamov's groin injury is considered minor, the move to injured reserve ensures that he won't be available until at least Oct. 24 against the Canucks, likely guaranteeing Reto Berra a run of three consecutive starts. The added short-term workload for Berra could make him a worthwhile speculative add, as he'll likely be able to rack up some saves and perhaps steal a win or two during his run as the Avs' top goalie. However, Berra's career 2.97 GAA and .896 save percentage may make him toxic for fantasy owners looking to solidify their ratios.

Avs' Berra Could Get Starting Nod Thursday

News: Reto Berra could make the start in goal Thursday against the Senators if Semyon Varlamov (groin) is unable to play, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Varlamov was in the starter's crease at morning skate, but coach Patrick Roy said that if the groin injury is still bothering him during pregame warmups, Reto Berra would likely be called upon to make his second start in three games. Berra came away with the win earlier this week against the Bruins, stopping 27 of 28 shots in the 2-1 victory.

Berra Guides Avs To First Win

News: Reto Berra stopped all but one of the 28 shots he faced in Monday's win over Boston.
Analysis: Reto Berra was spectacular Monday, helping the Avalanche pick up their first win of the season. Semyon Varlamov is Colorado's clear starting goalie, but Berra could still see a decent amount of starts as the backup. Berra went 0-1-1 with the Avalanche last season, posting a .781 save percentage and 5.85 GAA.

Avs' Berra Will Start Monday

News: Reto Berra will get the call between the pipes Monday against the Bruins, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Reto Berra will get the call in the first of back-to-back games for Colorado on Monday. The Avs have yet to score this season, so they'll be looking to break out Monday and give Berra some support.

Avs' Berra Saves 10 In Relief

News: Reto Berra made 10 saves in relief of Semyon Varlamov in Thursday's season-opening loss to the Wild.
Analysis: The defense set Varlamov up for failure Thursday, as the Wild outshot the Avs by a 38-13 count before coach Patrick Roy mercifully pulled him. Reto Berra was able to clot the bleeding by not ceding any further goals to the Wild, but he won't enter the conversation for the starting job. After posting an ugly 2.95 GAA and .897 save percentage over his 29 appearances with the Flames last season, Berra looks like one of the league's weaker No. 2 goalies.

Avs' Berra Pulled Early In Friday's Loss

News: Reto Berra's second start with Colorado was almost as disastrous as the first, as he was pulled after allowing two goals on five shots in a 5-1 loss to the Sharks.
Analysis: After allowing five goals on 27 shots to the Jets on March 19, many thought Reto Berra couldn't fare any worse against the Sharks; they were wrong. With the Avs fighting for the Central Division title in the final weekend of the season, coach Patrick Roy decided he wanted to see Berra one last time this year as J.S. Giguere -- not Berra -- will be dressing as the backup to Semyon Varlamov for the playoffs. The move turned out to be a potentially costly one for Roy, as his third-string netminder now has an atrocious .781 save percentage and 5.83 GAA with the Avs and they now need to beat Anaheim on Sunday to guarantee the division crown.

Avs' Berra To Start Friday

News: Reto Berra is slated to start Friday's road game against San Jose, the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: With the Avs currently juggling three goalies, Reto Berra is scheduled to make just his second start since coming over from Calgary at the trade deadline 17 games ago. He was lit up for five goals on 27 shots by the Jets on March 19, but will be counted on to bounce back strong by the Avs who find themselves gunning for the Central Division title in the final week of the season. Colorado's starter for Sunday's regular season finale in Anaheim is still yet to be determined by coach Patrick Roy, so Berra could garner some consideration if plays well against the Sharks - especially if the Avs are able to lock up a desirable playoff seed by then.
