Nieto Adds Assist In Limited Time For Sharks

News: Matt Nieto had an assist, a plus-2 rating and one shot through 10:27 of ice time in Thursday's win over Anaheim.
Analysis: Matt Nieto is coming out of his slump nicely, having posted a goal and two assists in his last five games. He's not working his way toward the Hart Trophy, but it's a significant improvement over the nine-game pointless streak he had going before that.

Nieto Slump Looming Large For Sharks

News: Matt Nieto finished Tuesday's win over Arizona with a minus-1 rating and three shots.
Analysis: Despite solid possession numbers, Matt Nieto can't seem to produce any offense after a solid start to the season. His without a point in his last nine games, with a minus-7 rating in that span. If you look back to November 6, he's got two goals and an assist through that 21-game span.

Sharks' Nieto Activated From IR

News: Matt Nieto (ankle) was activated from injured reserve Tuesday, Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area reports.
Analysis: Matt Nieto will presumably slot back in for Tuesday's game against the Canucks, after missing more than three weeks and nine games of action. For the corresponding transaction, Chris Tierney is headed to AHL Worcester. Nieto had produced nine points in 26 games prior to suffering the injury.

Sharks' Nieto (Ankle) Ready To Go

News: Matt Nieto (ankle) announced Sunday he was ready to play, David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: The latest news likely indicates Matt Nieto will return Tuesday against the Canucks barring a setback. He has been out since early December because of the ankle issue, but practiced both Thursday and Friday. In the off chance he is unable to go Tuesday, his next chance to return would come Wednesday against the Ducks.

Sharks' Nieto (Ankle) Out Saturday

News: Matt Nieto (ankle) did not make the trip to Los Angeles for Saturday's game against the Kings, Kevin Kurz of CSNBayArea.com reports.
Analysis: Matt Nieto seems to be making steady progress in his recovery from the ankle injury, but he's not ready just yet. Michael Haley, who was recalled Friday, will step in against Los Angeles, while Nieto looks ahead to a potential return Tuesday against Vancouver.

Sharks' Nieto Resumes Skating

News: Matt Nieto (ankle) skated Friday for the second consecutive day, David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Matt Nieto is tentatively planning a return to the lineup following the Sharks' upcoming four-day break for Christmas. It will be contingent on how much progress he makes with the ankle during practice, but he does at least seem to be trending in the right direction with his recovery.

Sharks' Nieto Suffers Setback

News: Matt Nieto suffered a setback in his recovery from an ankle injury and will miss at least one more game, CSN Bay Area reports.
Analysis: Matt Nieto was able to practice the last few days, but he took a step back Monday, sitting out practice and only skating briefly by himself. Nieto will have a chance to return to action Saturday, but his absence could extend at least into next week if he does not improve over the next few days.

Sharks Rule Nieto Out For Thursday

News: Matt Nieto (lower body) has been ruled out of Thursday's game against the Wild, David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Matt Nieto was optimistic that he'd be back in the lineup Thursday, but those hopes were dashed when he noticed a setback in his recovery Wednesday. It's not clear if it's just a minor speed bump or something that will extend his absence by multiple games, but more information regarding his condition should be available in the coming days.

Sharks' Nieto Placed On IR

News: Matt Nieto (ankle) was placed on injured reserve Wednesday.
Analysis: With the Sharks ruling out Matt Nieto for his fourth straight game Thursday, the roster move doesn't change his situation since he'll have already missed a week due to the injury. Nieto will target a return to the lineup Saturday versus the Predators and will be activated from IR if he demonstrates some progress before that time with his ankle injury.

Sharks' Nieto To Miss Third Straight

News: Matt Nieto (lower body) will miss his third straight game Tuesday versus the Oilers, Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area reports.
Analysis: Kurz reports that Matt Nieto's injury is related to his ankle, which he incurred following a hit from the Bruins' Kevan Miller on Dec. 4. The forward skated for about an hour Tuesday and is hoping to be ready to go in time for Thursday's match with the Wild.

Sharks' Nieto (Lower Body) Out Sunday

News: Matt Nieto (lower body) will not skate against the Oilers on Sunday, David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News reports.

Sharks' Nieto (Lower Body) Ruled Out Saturday

News: Matt Nieto will not play Saturday due to a lower body injury, CSN Bay Area reports.
Analysis: Matt Nieto will take a seat Saturday and look to return for a Sunday afternoon contest against the Oilers. Look for Tye McGinn or Barclay Goodrow to see reps on the Sharks' third or fourth lines as a result, though neither are likely high-percentage fantasy plays.

Sharks' Nieto Scores Game-Winner Tuesday

News: Matt Nieto scored the game-winning goal in Tuesday's 2-1 win over the Flyers, putting the puck in the net with just 12 seconds remaining.
Analysis: It's his second straight game with a goal, though Friday's tally came into an empty net. Matt Nieto's not much known for his scoring -- with nine points in 25 games, he's clipping along at about the same pace as last year.

Sharks' Nieto To Join Pavelski, Thornton Tuesday

News: Matt Nieto will join Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski on the Sharks' second line Tuesday versus the Bruins, David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: After an uninspiring 4-0 loss to the Rangers over the weekend, coach Todd McLellan will shake up his lines in the hopes of revitalizing the offense. Matt Nieto has gone without a point in his last three games after getting off to a hot start to the season, but playing with talents like Pavelski and Thornton could help spark the youngster's production. The line arrangement isn't expected to last long-term, but Nieto might make for an inexpensive, high-quality speculative play in daily formats Tuesday.

Sharks' Nieto On Three-Game Streak

News: Matt Nieto had an assist Tuesday, extending his point streak to three games in a win over Washington.

Nieto Scores In Sharks Opener

News: Matt Nieto scored the fourth and final goal in San Jose's 4-0 win over Los Angeles on Wednesday.
Analysis: Matt Nieto also logged a plus-1 rating, two penalty minutes, and two shots in the opener. A good start for the second-year forward who scored his way to ten goals and 14 assists in fits and starts last season.

Sharks' Nieto Bidding For A Top-Six Role

News: Matt Nieto is expected to open the season on the Sharks' second line, working at right wing alongside Logan Couture and Patrick Marleau, CSNBayArea.com's Kevin Kurz reports.
Analysis: Matt Nieto is coming off an up-and-down rookie season in which he compiled 24 points in 66 games, but he was at least able to capitalize on his considerable speed on a few occasions during the campaign to get the Sharks excited about his future. Though Nieto doesn't offer the upside of a top-flight scorer like that of teammate Tomas Hertl, opportunities to pick up points should still become plentiful for the 21-year-old, especially if he ends up sticking on the second line.

Two-Point Night For Sharks' Nieto

News: Matt Nieto bagged a pair of assists in Sunday's Game 1 win over the Kings.
Analysis: The rookie winger has played well in the opening games of round one, accumulating three assists and a plus-3 rating. After opening Game 2 in a two-goal deficit, coach Todd McLellan refocused the lineup on scoring depth, moving Joe Pavelski back to third-line center. If the depth chart stays that way, Matt Nieto could be a beneficiary, as the top three lines would be full of offensive potential and tough for the Kings to manage.

Nieto Back Up For Sharks

News: Matt Nieto has been recalled by the Sharks in advance of their playoff series with the Kings, CSNBayArea.com's Kevin Kurz reports.

Sharks Reassign Nieto

News: Matt Nieto was reassigned to ECHL Ontario on Friday, Kevin Kurz of CSNBayArea.com reports.
Analysis: It sounds like Matt Nieto was simply reassigned to facilitate roster space for Tomas Hertl's (knee) return from injured reserve. Though Nieto won't be available for Saturday's regular season finale, he'll rejoin the Sharks for the playoffs.

Nieto Continues Strong Play For San Jose

News: Matt Nieto had an assist and two shots in 19:50 of ice time during Monday's shootout loss to Calgary.

Nieto Continues To Rise In San Jose

News: Matt Nieto had an assist and four shots through 14:30 of ice time in Saturday's OT loss to the Capitals.
Analysis: Matt Nieto struggled to find a consistent game for most of the season, but has emerged as a rookie to watch in March. In his last eight games he has three goals and four assists.
