Sharks' Nieto Bidding For A Top-Six Role

News: Matt Nieto is expected to open the season on the Sharks' second line, working at right wing alongside Logan Couture and Patrick Marleau, CSNBayArea.com's Kevin Kurz reports.
Analysis: Matt Nieto is coming off an up-and-down rookie season in which he compiled 24 points in 66 games, but he was at least able to capitalize on his considerable speed on a few occasions during the campaign to get the Sharks excited about his future. Though Nieto doesn't offer the upside of a top-flight scorer like that of teammate Tomas Hertl, opportunities to pick up points should still become plentiful for the 21-year-old, especially if he ends up sticking on the second line.

Sharks' Nieto On Four-Game Streak

Analysis: Matt Nieto has two goals and three assists through the first four games of the series. He's surpassing expectations and is playing a very strong game so far. He's a good sleeper pickup.

Two-Point Night For Sharks' Nieto

News: Matt Nieto bagged a pair of assists in Sunday's Game 1 win over the Kings.
Analysis: The rookie winger has played well in the opening games of round one, accumulating three assists and a plus-3 rating. After opening Game 2 in a two-goal deficit, coach Todd McLellan refocused the lineup on scoring depth, moving Joe Pavelski back to third-line center. If the depth chart stays that way, Matt Nieto could be a beneficiary, as the top three lines would be full of offensive potential and tough for the Kings to manage.

Nieto Back Up For Sharks

News: Matt Nieto has been recalled by the Sharks in advance of their playoff series with the Kings, CSNBayArea.com's Kevin Kurz reports.
Analysis: Matt Nieto skated on the second line at Tuesday's practice, alongside Patrick Marleau and Logan Couture. He's produced well during his 66-game stint with the Sharks this season, scoring 10 goals and adding 14 assists.

Sharks Reassign Nieto

News: Matt Nieto was reassigned to ECHL Ontario on Friday, Kevin Kurz of CSNBayArea.com reports.
Analysis: It sounds like Matt Nieto was simply reassigned to facilitate roster space for Tomas Hertl's (knee) return from injured reserve. Though Nieto won't be available for Saturday's regular season finale, he'll rejoin the Sharks for the playoffs.

Nieto Continues Strong Play For San Jose

News: Matt Nieto had an assist and two shots in 19:50 of ice time during Monday's shootout loss to Calgary.
Analysis: Matt Nieto has three goals and five assists over the last nine games -- a surprising run of production from the 20-year-old, who managed just 15 points in his first 49 games.

Nieto Continues To Rise In San Jose

News: Matt Nieto had an assist and four shots through 14:30 of ice time in Saturday's OT loss to the Capitals.
Analysis: Matt Nieto struggled to find a consistent game for most of the season, but has emerged as a rookie to watch in March. In his last eight games he has three goals and four assists.

Nieto Continues String Of Strong Play For Sharks

Sharks' Nieto Scores Again

News: Matt Nieto potted his third goal in four games and extended a points streak to four games with a tally in San Jose's 4-3 win over the Islanders on Friday.
Analysis: Matt Nieto has quietly been giving San Jose a secondary scoring threat after the likes of Joe Pavelski, Patrick Marleau and Logan Couture. Give him a look in deep leagues if you need a scoring boost, as he is seeing chances on a strong team. Just don't be disappointed if he quiets a bit.

Nieto Active In Sharks Win

News: Matt Nieto pushed his point streak to three games with a goal in Thursday's shootout win over Columbus.
Analysis: This rookie is long on skill, but has been a bit inconsistent this season, as rookies are wont to be. When he's seeing time with the team's top players, Matt Nieto tends to score more, as anyone would. Remember his name for next year, as he's been too inconsistent this season to be relied upon much, with 20 points through 53 games.

Nieto Adds Assist In Sharks Win

News: Matt Nieto had an assist and a notable 18:27 in ice time Tuesday against Toronto.
Analysis: That's a lot of ice time for a rookie who is averaging just 13:47 per night. The team's confidence in Matt Nieto is rising as he leaves a long slump behind him. He has four goals and two assists over the last eight games, which is strong considering he's not that far removed from a seven-game stretch without a point and an early drought of 28 games without a goal.

Nieto Scores In SJ's Win

News: Matt Nieto collected a goal and an assist Saturday as the Sharks blanked Montreal, 4-0.
Analysis: He still hasn't proven himself as a consistent scorer -- note his eight weeks without a point in November and December -- but he's showing signs of developing his offense at the tender age of 21. As we've noted here previously, his fantasy value will depend largely on his line assignments.

Nieto Nets Game-Winner For Sharks

News: Matt Nieto scored the game-winner in Sunday's victory in New Jersey.
Analysis: Matt Nieto was all over the ice in this one, earning himself No. 1 star honors. He was an offensive powerhouse, with more opportunities than the box score showed. Nieto could be coming up on an offensive surge if he continues to play on a line with Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski. However, the lines in San Jose are swirling like a Sharknado. Keep an eye on the depth chart if you're playing Nieto.

Nieto Likely To Return To Sharks Lineup Thursday

News: Matt Nieto skated on the fourth line during morning skate Thursday and appears to have put the foot injury behind him, according to David Pollak of the Mercury News.
Analysis: Matt Nieto has had a roller coaster year, but started the season strong. Maybe this fresh start will produce similar results. He is coming off his first multi-goal game on February 3 — one-game prior to his injury.

Sharks' Nieto In Walking Boot

News: Matt Nieto left Wednesday's game in the second period after blocking a shot with his foot. He's likely out of Friday's game, according to Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area.
Analysis: Matt Nieto was seen with a walking boot on his left foot after the game. It's probably a safe assumption that you won't see him again until after the Olympic break.

Sharks' Nieto Scores Twice

News: Matt Nieto lit the lamp twice, including a power-play tally, against the Flyers on Monday.
Analysis: These are Matt Nieto's first goals in eight games, and he only has six on the season. However, he played with Joe Pavelski and Joe Thornton in this game and saw power-play time, so if that continues, his fantasy value definitely gets a boost.

Nieto Heads To Top Line In San Jose

News: Matt Nieto will playing alongside Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski on San Jose's top line Monday, according to Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area.
Analysis: This is an upgrade not to be ignored. Matt Nieto is getting time on a line that features two of the hottest forwards in the NHL. This could be a boon — albeit potentially short term — for Nieto owners.

Sharks' Nieto Gets Goal, Assist in Win

News: Matt Nieto had a goal and assist in Saturday's come-from-behind victory over the Lightning.
Analysis: After getting his first goal in 29 games Thursday against the Panthers, Matt Nieto kept the good tidings going Saturday. Seemingly locked into a second-line role while Tomas Hertl and Logan Couture remain on injured reserve, Nieto should continue to maintain relevance in deeper leagues.

Sharks' Nieto Ends Long Scoring Slump

News: Matt Nieto scored his first goal in 29 games in Thursday's win over the Panthers.
Analysis: It's been a long time coming for Matt Nieto. Since October 17, to be exact. After a brief stint in the AHL he's slowly picking up the production again. He has a goal and four assists over the last nine games. He's not a huge producer yet, but he's developing well and could be an interesting play in years to come.

Sharks' Nieto Extends Point Streak

News: Matt Nieto had an assist in Tuesday's loss to Nashville.
Analysis: Matt Nieto has a three-game point streak going, and his minutes are on the rise with the rash of injuries to San Jose forwards. Tuesday's 18:26 on ice is his second-highest mark of the season.

Nieto Stepping Up For Sharks

News: Matt Nieto had an assist and a plus-1 rating in 17:15 of ice time in a win over Chicago on Sunday.
Analysis: Matt Nieto continues his strong play when San Jose most needs a forward to step up. Notably, his ice time has gone up sharply over the last five games, which are the five games in which he's seen the most ice time this season. That's partially due to strong play, partially due to a host of injuries for the Sharks.

Sharks' Nieto Nabs Assist

News: Matt Nieto had an assist, three shots, and a plus-1 rating in Saturday's loss to Colorado.
Analysis: After a 15-game stretch without a point — during which he was a healthy scratch on multiple occasions and was briefly sent to the AHL — Neito has two assists in the last three games. That rough patch isn't firmly behind him, but he has the opportunity to step up with a lot of injuries in San Jose. He's worth keeping an eye on.

Nieto's Point Slump Ends In Sharks Loss

News: Matt Nieto had an assist and two shots in a loss to Anaheim on Tuesday.
Analysis: That is Matt Nieto's first assist in 15 games, a stretch that included being a healthy scratch a few times and a stint in the AHL. You can't trust Nieto to provide consistent production right now. However, there's an opportunity for Nieto to step up and play on top lines with the injury woes the Sharks have right now on forward.
