Caps' Schmidt Inks Two-Year Extension

News: Nate Schmidt re-signed Wednesday with the Capitals on a two-year, $1.625 million contract, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: With Mike Green expected to depart as an unrestricted free agent this summer, Nate Schmidt is expected to fill one of the six regular spots on defense for the Capitals. Schmidt's deal is of the one-way variety, meaning that he'll have to clear waivers first if the Capitals decide to send him back to AHL Hershey at any point. The 23-year-old has appeared in 68 games with the Capitals over the past two seasons, accruing three goals and seven assists.

Caps' Schmidt Recalled On Emergency Basis

News: Nate Schmidt was recalled from AHL Hershey on an emergency basis Monday.
Analysis: The Capitals didn't provide an explanation for Nate Schmidt's promotion, but it could be related to a possible injury for Tim Gleason, who was nursing an undisclosed ailment heading into Game 3 against the Rangers and may not be fully recovered. Schmidt was previously recalled for precautionary purposes in that instance, and it's possible the Capitals are just bringing the 23-year-old aboard as a safeguard once again in advance of Wednesday's Game 7.

Capitals Reassign Schmidt

News: Nate Schmidt was reassigned to AHL Hershey on Saturday.
Analysis: The 23-year-old had become a more frequent healthy scratch of late for the Capitals, so the motivation to demote him likely stems from the organizational brass' desire to get him more ice time. Steven Oleksy was recalled from Hershey in a corresponding move and is likely to fill the seventh defenseman role that had previously gone to Nate Schmidt.

Caps' Schmidt Tallies Assist In Saturday's Win

News: Nate Schmidt had an assist in a 4-2 win over Tampa Bay on Saturday.
Analysis: The assist was Nate Schmidt's third point of the season, and although he's been a solid player under new head coach Barry Trotz, his fantasy value remains hindered by his place on the depth chart and lack of playing time (just over 14 minutes per game). Even in deeper leagues, he's a reach from a fantasy perspective.

Caps' Schmidt Gets In Full Practice

News: Nate Schmidt (head) skated without a non-contact jersey at Thursday's practice, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: With Nate Schmidt no longer facing any limitations after taking a hit to the chin last Sunday, he'll attempt to make a final push for a roster spot. Though he won't play in Thursday's preseason tilt, he's expected to be ready to play in Sunday's exhibition finale against the Hurricanes.

Caps' Schmidt Recovering From Head Injury

News: Nate Schmidt (head) is hoping to return to practice Wednesday, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Nate Schmidt passed all concussion tests after he was laid out by the Habs' Jarred Tinordi in Sunday's preseason contest, and it appears the Capitals are simply proceeding carefully with the blueliner. Even if he's able to take full contact Wednesday, Schmidt is far from a safe bet to secure an Opening Night roster spot.
