News: Jody Shelley underwent successful hip surgery Wednesday and is out indefinitely, Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly.com reports.

Flyers' Shelley To Have Hip Surgery Wednesday

News: Jody Shelley will undergo hip surgery Wednesday, Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly.com reports.
Analysis: GM Paul Holmgren was expecting the surgery to get done last week, but Jody Shelley will finally go under the knife Wednesday. It's uncertain how long he'll be out exactly, but an extended period on the shelf appears likely. The 37-year-old Shelley appeared in just one game this season before the hip ailment forced him out.

Shelley Uneligible But Unlikely To Play For Philly

News: Jody Shelley's suspension has ended, but he is unlikely to play Thursday, according to Philly.com.
Analysis: Jody Shelley will likely get his shot this weekend. "It's a lonely thing when you're here but you know you're not playing," Shelley said. "It's a definite and you're just kind of trying to stay in shape and stay sharp."

Flyers Shelley Suspended for First Five Games of Season

News: Jody Shelley has been suspended by the NHL for the remained of the preseason and the first five games of the regular season, NHL.com reports.
Analysis: Jody Shelley was assessed a boarding infraction for a hit he put on Darryl Boyce in Wednesday's game. He has a history of making questionable plays and that poor judgment has earned him plenty of free time. Shelley was was suspended twice last season, and his latest suspension brings his career total to six.

Flyers' Shelley Could Be Benched For Game 3

News: Shelley is likely to be scratched for Wednesday's Game 3 if Jeff Carter (knee) is able to return to the lineup, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Analysis: Shelley participated in Game 2 on Monday, but was limited to just 4:43 of ice time. Obviously the enforcer is not someone to consider rolling with in fantasy pools considering his playing time depends on the health of others like Carter, who is reportedly a game-time decision Wednesday.

Flyers' Shelley Out Four Weeks

News: Shelley will undergo surgery Thursday on the orbital bone around his left eye and miss about four weeks, PhiladelphiaFlyers.com reports.
Analysis: Shelley has been a source of PIMs this season, but he doesn't offer much offensively, notching just two goals and two assists. He could return in the playoffs depending on how far the Flyers advance, but his regular season is likely over.

Light Minutes For Philly's Shelley

News: Shelley was given 6:45 of ice time against Florida on Wednesday.
Analysis: Given that Shelley hovers around that ice time range for almost all of his contests, his opportunities to contribute for fantasy owners are limited.

Philadelphia's Shelley Doubtful Tuesday

News: Shelley (flu) did not practice Monday and missed Tuesday's morning skate, putting his availability for Tuesday's game against Tampa Bay in doubt, Philadelphia Daily News writer Frank Seravalli reports.
Analysis: If you've been using Shelley as a source of PIMs this year, you probably want to look to an alternative for Tuesday.

Two-Game Suspension for Flyers' Shelley

News: Shelley received a two-game suspension for punching Canucks defenseman Andrew Alberts on Tuesday, the Flyers' official site reports.

Shelley Set To Return To Flyers On Saturday

News: Shelley is eligible to return from his two-game suspension Saturday.

Flyers' Shelley Suspended Two Games

News: Shelley has been suspended two games for his hit on Boston's Andrew McQuaid in Saturday's game, Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News reports.
Analysis: No surprise here given the nature of the hit and Shelley's reputation within the league. As a result of the suspension, Shelley will miss Tuesday's game against Pittsburgh and Wednesday's game against Montreal.

Flyers' Shelley: 15 PIMs Saturday

News: Shelley was given a game misconduct and a five-minute major Saturday after two-handing Boston's Adam McQuaid into the end boards during a race for the puck. He may face a disciplinary hearing as a result.
Analysis: McQuaid was lucky to get his hands up at the last second to avoid going in headfirst. But Shelley's reputation as a meathead will no doubt get him a hearing if for nothing but pure stupidity.

Flyers' Shelley Showing Opponents Tough Love

News: Staying true to his enforcer ways, Shelley has 34 penalty minutes this season.
Analysis: Shelley is on pace for 132 penalty minutes in his first season playing in the City of Brotherly Love. Still, fantasy owners that get rewarded heavily for PIMs are the only ones likely to be loving him like a brother since he hardly scores or sets up skaters.

Shelley almost plays role of hero

News: Rangers LW Jody Shelley had his team's only regulation goal during a 2-1 loss to the Flyers on Sunday, as New York was eliminated from the playoff picture. Shelley came close to haunting the Flyers for a long summer. He hadn't scored all season until he got one in Friday's 4-3 win that pushed the Rangers to the brink of the postseason. Shelley struck again and quieted a rowdy crowd when he scored only 3:27 into Sunday's game. He deflected a shot from the point past a stunned Brian Boucher -- who led the Flyers to the 2000 Eastern Conference finals then bounced around the league -- for a 1-0 lead.
Analysis: Shelley probably wishes the Flyers were on the schedule every game since it was the only team he scored against in 2009-10. At that rate, he would have been the NHL scoring champ. Sadly, Shelley has made his bones as an enforcer and will keep the same role as long as he is in the NHL. He finished the year with nine points and 115 penalty minutes. View him as nothing more than a flier in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for PIM on Draft Day 2010.

Shelley has quiet Rangers debut

News: Enforcer Jody Shelley, who was acquired from San Jose on Friday, made his Rangers debut on Sunday against the Lightning. He filled the role of Donald Brashear, who was farmed out Saturday to Hartford (AHL). Shelley had no points in 2:51 of ice time and finished at even. He logged no penalty minutes.
Analysis: It's only going to be a matter of time before Shelley drops the gloves. Coach John Tortorella is a fiery coach, so he probably will love having Shelley at his disposal. Shelley remains just a flier in leagues that reward heavily for PIM.

Rangers add Shelley in trade

News: The New York Rangers have acquired enforcer Jody Shelley from the San Jose Sharks for a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2011 draft. The deal was made shortly before Friday's moratorium for the Olympic break.
Analysis: The 34-year-old Shelley played in 137 games with San Jose, posting three goals, 11 assists and 285 penalty minutes. Shelley's 1,300 penalty minutes since the start of his first full season in 2001-02 are the second most in the NHL. Only Ottawa's Chris Neil has more with 1,440. New York needed an enforcer after sending Donald Brashear to the minors. Shelley remains just a flier in leagues that reward heavily for PIM.

Shelley chippy in February

News: Sharks LW Jody Shelley got into his 10th fight on Monday against the Maple Leafs as he fought enforcer Colton Orr in the first period. Shelley, who doesn't have a point since Nov. 1, has totaled three fights and 17 penalty minutes in his last two games.
Analysis: It's good to see Shelley show some life in February since he hasn't been very active since dealing with some soreness issues in November. He continues to fill his role as enforcer for San Jose and remains just a flier in leagues that reward heavily for PIM.
