Devils' Kovalchuk Retires

News: Ilya Kovalchuk has announced that he will retire.
Analysis: The 30-year-old winger shocked the entire NHL on Thursday when he announced he will forego the final 12 years of his contract with the Devils and hang up the skates. Ilya Kovalchuk was due to make $11.3 million next season, but after a disappointing 2013 campaign in which the Devils failed to make the playoffs, it looks like Kovalchuk is done with the NHL, at least for now.

Kovalchuk Set To Join KHL Squad

News: The same day he announced his retirement, Ilya Kovalchuk reached agreement on a contract with St. Petersburg SKA of the KHL, Yahoo! Sports reports.
Analysis: It's a bit surprising that Ilya Kovalchuk would leave the NHL with nearly 12 years and $77 million on the table, but he's always had a strong desire to play in his native Russia. During the lockout this past season, Kovalchuk expressed a preference to remain in the KHL even after the NHL and NHLPA came to an agreement on a shortened season, before eventually relenting and joining the Devils. Kovalchuk's contract is now fully voided, so if he has a change of tune and elects to return stateside, he'd have to settle for a much less lucrative payday.

Devils' Kovalchuk Grabs Two Points

News: Ilya Kovalchuk scored a goal and added an assist in Thursday's win over Pittsburgh, giving him points in three straight games.
Analysis: After missing nearly a month with a shoulder injury, Kovy's got four points in as many games since returning. It's good to see he didn't miss a step -- promising for next year.

Devils' Kovalchuk (Shoulder) Makes It Through Saturday's Game

News: Ilya Kovalchuk (shoulder) made it through Saturday's game without incident, the Bergen Record's Tom Gulitti reports.
Analysis: Ilya Kovalchuk did not tally a point and finished with a minus-1 rating in a game his team won 6-2, but the more important thing is that his shoulder held up. The Devils still have a shot to make the playoffs, if only because they play the Rangers twice in their final four games. Expect Kovalchuk to suit up for Sunday's must-win contest against the aforementioned Rangers.

Devils' Kovalchuk To Return To Ice Saturday

News: Ilya Kovalchuk (shoulder) is expected to play Saturday, the Bergen Record reports.
Analysis: Ilya Kovalchuk has not played since March 23. Kovalchuk hoped to return earlier this week but was held out until now. His injured shoulder should be healthy.

Devils' Kovalchuk Could Play Saturday

News: Ilya Kovalchuk (shoulder) feels "much better" and could play this weekend, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.
Analysis: Ilya Kovalchuk injured his shouler back on Mar. 23 and has not played since. He did not make the trip to Philadelphia with the team for Thursday's game and remains listed as day-to-day. Kovalchuk has recorded 10 goals and 17 assists on the season for the Devils.

Devils' Kovalchuk Not Ready Yet

News: Ilya Kovalchuk (shoulder) won't travel to Philadelphia, where the Devils play Thursday. "He's not close enough to be a consideration, so we're going to leave him back," coach Pete DeBoer noted Wednesday.
Analysis: As a result, Ilya Kovalchuk's next shot at suiting up for the Devils will be Saturday's home game against the Panthers.

Devils' Kovalchuk Nears Return

News: Ilya Kovalchuk (right shoulder) could play as soon as Thursday night against the Flyers, the Star-Ledger reports.
Analysis: The Devils are 0-5-4 in their last nine games with Ilya Kovalchuk out, so his return would clearly be a welcome one, as the team's stretch run approaches.

Devils' Kovalchuk Out Monday

News: Ilya Kovalchuk (shoulder) won't play in Monday's game against the Maple Leafs, the Record reports.
Analysis: Though coach Pete DeBoer said that Ilya Kovalchuk is still "moving in a positive direction," the right winger isn't quite ready to play and will miss his 10th game in a row on Monday.

Devils' Kovalchuk Not At Practice

News: Ilya Kovalchuk (shoulder) did not practice Sunday, the Record reports.

Devils' Kovalchuk (Shoulder) Likely Out Monday

News: Ilya Kovalchuk (shoulder) does not expect to play against the Maple Leafs on Monday, northjersey.com reports.
Analysis: Ilya Kovalchuk has already missed the last nine games, of which the Devils did not win a single one. From the sound of things he could have a chance to return for Thursday's game in Philadelphia, though we wouldn't recommend counting on it. Kovalchuk is still limited to wrist shots in practice and noted that one-timers aren't an option for him at the moment.

Devils' Kovalchuk Remains Out

News: Ilya Kovalchuk (shoulder) will not play in Friday's game against the Senators, Sportsnet's Ian Mendes reports.
Analysis: Ilya Kovalchuk skated a bit this week, but he did not participate in Friday's morning skate, and will miss his ninth straight game Friday night. Kovalchuk is considered day-to-day (though he remains on IR), so there is a chance he could take the ice for the Devils' next game Monday.

Devils' Kovalchuk Not Quite Ready

News: Though Ilya Kovalchuk (shoulder) said he had a "good skate" Wednesday, he is unlikely to play Friday against Ottawa, according to the Record's Tom Gulitti.
Analysis: The right winger won't play Wednesday against the Bruins, but the report implies that a Ilya Kovalchuk return Monday against the Leafs could be plausible.

Devils' Kovalchuk Nearing Return

News: Ilya Kovalchuk (shoulder) is still "a few more days" away from a return, the Record reports.
Analysis: Ilya Kovalchuk took to the ice with his teammates Tuesday, but he's not ready to see game action just yet and at the very least, he won't play Wednesday against the Bruins.

Devils' Kovalchuk Takes To The Ice

News: Ilya Kovalchuk (right shoulder) took to the ice Tuesday, the Star-Ledger reports.
Analysis: The report notes that Ilya Kovalchuk skated at full speed Tuesday, though he did not engage in any contact. It's a step in the right direction for the right winger -- who hurt his shoulder on March 23 -- but there is still no timetable for his return to action.

Devils' Kovalchuk Starts Shoulder Rehab

News: Ilya Kovalchuk has started to rehab his shoulder, according to the Record's Tom Gulitti.
Analysis: Coach Pete DeBoer noted Tuesday that Ilya Kovalchuk will be back this season, but added that the forward's return will not occur in "the near future."

Devils Say Kovalchuk Will Miss 2-4 Weeks

News: Ilya Kovalchuk (shoulder) is expected to miss "2-4 weeks" with a shoulder injury according to the Bergen Record's Tom Gulitti. He was placed on IR Sunday.
Analysis: Ilya Kovalchuk suffered the injury in the third period of Saturday's win over Florida and did not return. This will leave a huge hole in the New Jersey lineup as Kovalchuk plays more than 25 minutes most nights, tops among NHL forwards. The news could have been worse, but owners are looking at possibly not having Kovalchuk for their fantasy playoffs in a few weeks.

Devils Expect Kovalchuk To Miss Time

News: Devils coach Peter DeBoer told the Bergen Record's Tom Gulitti that they expect Ilya Kovalchuk to "be out at least a short time" after suffering an apparent shoulder injury in Saturday's win over Florida.
Analysis: Those in weekly leagues will want to consider reserving Ilya Kovalchuk for next week until there is more known about his shoulder injury, as tests are slated for Sunday. In all likelihood, Kovalchuk will not play Monday against Ottawa.

Devils' Kovalchuk Leaves Saturday With Apparent Injury

News: Ilya Kovalchuk left Saturday's game against the Panthers with an apparent shoulder injury, the Bergen Record's Tom Gulitti reports.
Analysis: Ilya Kovalchuk immediately headed for the locker room after going hard into the boards Saturday. He appeared to be favoring his shoulder and was hunched over as he skated off. Consider Kovalchuk day-to-day until more information becomes available.

Devils' Kovalchuk: Seven Points In Seven Games

News: Ilya Kovalchuk set up the Devils' lone goal in Saturday's 2-1 loss to the Canadiens. He has seven points in his last seven games.
Analysis: His 10 goals and 15 assists in 29 games might feel a little light, but that's a 28-goal, 71-point pace over an 82-game season. Keep him rolling.

Devils' Kovalchuk Scores Twice

News: Ilya Kovalchuk scored twice, including once while shorthanded, in Saturday's loss to the Hurricanes. He now has a modest three-game point streak, but the goals were his first in seven games.
Analysis: All snipers run hot-and-cold and Kovy is the same. He hasn't been lighting the lamp as frequently as we'd expect (he has nine goals), but his 22 points would equate to 72 over a full season.

Kovalchuk Scores Devils' Only Goal

News: Ilya Kovalchuk scored New Jersey's only goal in Saturday's loss to Washington, giving him six points over the last five contests.
Analysis: Ilya Kovalchuk has goals in each of the last two games, both of which have shown the sheer skill the winger possesses. Kovalchuk is heating up after a slow start and still is not shy about shooting the puck, putting up 66 shots through 18 games. Play Kovalchuk with confidence, just know that the Devils have looked spotty at times offensively this season.

Kovalchuk's 3 Assists Spark Devils

News: Ilya Kovalchuk assisted on three of New Jersey's five goals in Friday evening's win over Philadelphia, giving him nine points in the last five games.
Analysis: Ilya Kovalchuk played the role of provider on Friday, notching three primary assists to go along with the three goals he has scored over the last five games. He's playing at an elite level and remains one of the league's top scoring options.

Devils' Kovalchuk Snaps Skid

News: Ilya Kovalchuk ended a five-game scoreless streak Thursday with a goal and an assist in the Devils' win over Tampa Bay.
Analysis: The Devils have been missing Kovy's production, as he'd started the year with a four-game points streak, then frequently went invisible on the ice over his scoreless span. Perhaps the jolt of finding the net shorthanded and producing a primary assist on the power play will get him back to his old ways again.
