Coyotes' Smith Won't Need MCL Procedure

News: Mike Smith will not require surgery to repair his sprained right MCL, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Mike Smith -- who was injured back on March 24 -- indicated that if the Coyotes' season was still in progress, he'd probably be back in the team's netminding mix. In any case, Smith's knee issue figures to be a distant memory the next time the Coyotes take the ice as a team.

Coyotes' Smith Won't Return Saturday

News: Mike Smith (knee) will not be available Saturday against the Sharks, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Though Mike Smith has been able to resume practicing over the last few days, he's still not quite where he needs to be on the health front. The Coyotes have missed Smith's presence badly in the net, as backup Thomas Greiss has lost six consecutive games. The losing streak has put Phoenix two points behind Dallas for the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

Coyotes' Smith Practices

News: Mike Smith (knee) was a full participant in Monday's practice, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Mike Smith has been sidelined since March 24 with a knee injury, but it looks like he may finally be nearing a return. Despite the missed games, Smith still ranks second in the league among goalies with 62 games played, and should pick up right where he left off when he returns.

Coyotes' Smith Skates Before Practice

News: Mike Smith (lower body) skated on his own before Monday's practice, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: It's good to see Mike Smith back on the ice, but he still won't be back in the net until next week at the earliest, as he waits to be reassessed by team doctors over the weekend. The Coyotes will continue to lean heavily on backup Thomas Greiss in the interim.

Coyotes' Smith To Miss Another Week

News: Mike Smith (lower body) will be reevaluated in one week.
Analysis: While the Coyotes further noted that Mike Smith's injury isn't as severe as initially feared, the ailment nonetheless takes him out of commission for a crucial stretch of time for both fantasy owners and the playoff-hopeful Coyotes. Thomas Greiss has played well in Smith's stead and it may make sense to scoop him up off the waiver wire if still available.

Coyotes' Smith To Be Reevaluated Friday

News: Mike Smith (lower body) will be reevaluated when the team returns home Friday.
Analysis: The team is still officially calling Mike Smith day-to-day, but the news that he'll be reevaluated Friday suggests that he won't be available for Thursday's matchup with the Devils. Backup Thomas Greiss will likely get the start in Smith's place, although there is a possibility that the recently recalled Mark Visentin could get the call instead.

Coyotes' Smith Day-To-Day

News: Mike Smith (lower body) is considered day-to-day by the Coyotes.
Analysis: We'll await further updates on his status, but Mike Smith's day-to-day designation would seem to indicate that he avoided a serious injury Monday. In his absence, the Coyotes plan to recall Mark Visentin to work in tandem Thomas Greiss.

Coyotes' Smith Leaves With Injury

News: Mike Smith suffered an apparent lower-body injury in the third period of Monday's game against the Rangers.
Analysis: Mike Smith was injured in a goal-mouth collision. The injury looked like it might be serious initially, and it appeared to be to his right knee area, but we'll likely have more information about that soon. He was replaced by Thomas Greiss with the Coyotes up 3-2.

Coyotes Will Start Smith On Monday

News: Mike Smith will draw his 12th straight start Monday against the Rangers.
Analysis: Mike Smith saw his three-game wining streak come to an end Saturday against a surging Bruins squad, but it shouldn't stop fantasy owners from using him now that he seems to have settled into a groove over the last month. He has a 7-4-0 record, 2.18 GAA and .924 save percentage in March.

Smith Takes Tough Loss As Coyotes Fall At Home

News: Mike Smith suffered a third-period letdown Saturday as the Bruins came from behind to beat the Coyotes in Phoenix, 4-2. He allowed three goals on 27 shots.
Analysis: Expect the coaching staff to rely on him heavily as the regular season winds down; the team is in a fight for the eighth seed in the West, and they'll go with Mike Smith as often as they can.

Coyotes Start Smith On Saturday

News: Mike Smith will celebrate his 32nd birthday in goal against the Bruins on Saturday, NHL.com's Dave Vest reports.
Analysis: Mike Smith is making his 11th straight start and has won four of his last five with just nine goals allowed over that span. He is 27-20-10 with a 2.64 GAA and a .915 save percentage.

Smith Strong As Coyotes Win Third Straight

News: Mike Smith made 22 saves on 23 shots Thursday in a win over Florida.
Analysis: That's three consecutive wins and seven in nine starts for Mike Smith, who's been carrying the Coyotes with Vezina-quality play over his last 15 starts. In that span, he's allowed just 28 goals on 443 shots -- a 1.86 GAA and .937 save percentage.

Coyotes To Go With Smith On Thursday

News: Mike Smith will be between the pipes Thursday against the Panthers, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: After suggesting earlier in the week that Mike Smith could be in line to start every game from here on out for the Coyotes, coach Dave Tippett will stick to that plan Thursday night. It's hard to blame Tippett for giving Smith a heavy workload, considering he's won six of his last nine starts, not to mention that the Coyotes are fighting hard to secure the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Coyotes Could Start Smith Rest Of Way

News: Coach Dave Tippett has made it clear that he intends to ride Mike Smith the rest of the way, making it possible that he starts each of the remaining 13 games for the Coyotes, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Mike Smith already leads all NHL goaltenders in starts, shots faced, and saves this season. Still, with the Coyotes needing to put out their best lineup every night as they look to create separation from the Stars, Canucks and Jets for the final playoff spot out west, Smith figures to be ridden heavily. He's made the last nine starts for the Coyotes and has provided some of his best play of the season during that stretch, winning six of those contests.

Coyotes' Smith Stops 36 In Win

News: Mike Smith made 36 saves on 39 shots in a win over the Kings on Monday.
Analysis: Mike Smith's continued to be busy, but his play has improved recently. He's won four of his last five games, and he's improved his save percentage to .915, which is about his career average.

Coyotes' Smith Starting Monday Vs. Kings

News: Mike Smith will start Monday's game against the Kings, Dave Vest of NHL.com reports.
Analysis: With the Coyotes battling for a wild-card spot, Mike Smith will get his ninth consecutive start. He's been effective lately, allowing just five goals over the last three games.

Smith's 25th Keeps Coyotes In Playoff Picture

News: Mike Smith won his 25th game of the season as the Coyotes stayed in the postseason hunt with a 3-2 win over Calgary on Saturday night. He stopped 29 of 31 shots (.935).
Analysis: Although backup Thomas Greiss has better stats, Mike Smith will get the great majority of starts in the Coyotes' 13 remaining regular-season games.

Coyotes' Smith To Start Saturday

News: Mike Smith is on track to start Saturday's game against the Flames, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Mike Smith picked up a loss against the Bruins his last time out, but he has been stellar since the end of the Olympic break, posting a 2.10 GAA and .924 save percentage in eight games. He will look to stay hot against a Calgary team that sits 28th in the league in scoring, but has tallied at least four goals in four of its last six games.

Smith, Phoenix Fall Thursday

News: Mike Smith allowed two goals on 20 shots in Thursday's 2-1 loss to Boston, his second loss in the last six games.
Analysis: Mike Smith guided Phoenix to a victory the night before against Florida and drew a tough assignment against Boston on Thursday. That said, a .900 save percentage in a game looks a lot better when your team gets you a bit of goal support. Smith has won four of his last six starts and figures to add to his NHL-leading games-played total down the stretch. He's allowed three goals in the last two games.

Coyotes Ride Hot Smith On Thursday

News: Mike Smith will be in the crease Thursday vs. the Bruins, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Mike Smith has reeled off wins in four of his last five starts, but he'll be in for his toughest outing in a while Thursday, as the Bruins carry a six-game winning streak into the contest. Fantasy owners will probably want to continue to use Smith given how well he's played of late, but don't be surprised if he comes out on the losing end in this one.

Coyotes' Smith Saves 31 In Victory

News: Mike Smith stopped 31 of 32 shots Tuesday against Florida, good for his fourth win in his last five starts.
Analysis: Mike Smith's been terrific over this five-game span even though he continues to face 30-plus shots in nearly every game. All that volume's made him a top-tier asset in points leagues despite so-so rate stats and an unimpressive record.

Coyotes To Start Smith On Tuesday

News: Mike Smith will start Tuesday's game against the Panthers.
Analysis: Mike Smith, who also started Monday's shootout win over the Lightning, has now won three of his last four turns. He last gave way to backup Thomas Greiss back on Feb. 28.

Coyotes' Smith Stops 28 In Win

News: Mike Smith made 28 saves on 31 shots in a shootout win over the Lightning on Monday.
Analysis: Mike Smith has picked up the win in three of his last four starts, although he doesn't rank in the top 20 in either save percentage or GAA. However, he has played more games in net than anybody, so at the very leastm you can rely on him getting a bunch of starts as the Coyotes fight for the playoffs.

Coyotes To Roll With Smith On Monday

News: Mike Smith will be in the net Monday against the Lightning, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Mike Smith's season ratios remain uninspiring, but fantasy owners should be encouraged by his excellence in his recent starts. He's surrendered two or fewer goals in seven of his last nine starts, including shutouts of the Blackhawks and Canucks. He might not be a bad option for daily leagues against a Lightning squad -- his old employer -- that has lost four games in a row.

Coyotes' Smith Takes Loss Saturday

News: Mike Smith stopped 30 of 33 shots he faced Saturday in a loss to the Capitals.
Analysis: This was just the second time in nine starts dating back to February 1 that Mike Smith allowed more than two goals. He will look to get back on a winning track Monday against Tampa Bay.
