Coyotes' Smith Lit Up For Five In Another Loss

News: Mike Smith was tagged for five goals on 38 shots in Thursday's loss to Nashville.
Analysis: Just the latest in a series of poor outings for Mike Smith -- his fourth consecutive game with a save mark under .900. The only silver lining is that Devan Dubnyk hasn't played quite well enough recently to seize the job from him, but the 32-year-old Smith has been perhaps the worst starting goalie in the league.

Coyotes' Smith Likely To Get Call Thursday

News: Mike Smith is expected to start for the Coyotes in goal Thursday against the Predators, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Mike Smith was the first goalie off the ice for morning skate and appears primed to reenter the crease after Devan Dubnyk was roasted for four goals on 24 shots in the Coyotes' most recent game Saturday before getting pulled. With a league-leading 13 losses to go along with a 3.27 GAA, only Smith's six-year, $34 million contract extension is affording him job security in his role as the team's No. 1 goalie.

Coyotes Start Smith Thursday

News: Mike Smith led the Coyotes onto the ice Thursday and will start in net against the Predators, Eric Stomgren of the Tennesseean reports.
Analysis: Mike Smith was expected to make the start after being the first one off the ice in morning warmups, and that expectation has been confirmed. He enters the contest with a rough 3.27 GAA.

Coyotes' Smith Sees Relief Duty Saturday

News: Mike Smith stopped eight of the nine shots he faced in relief of Devan Dubnyk Saturday against Boston.
Analysis: While Dubnyk will get credit for the loss, Mike Smith hasn't been any better lately, dropping nine of his last ten starts. Smith remains the No.1 goalie in Phoenix, but with an awful .890 save percentage and 3.27 GAA on the season, Smith really isn't going to do much for you right now. Until the Coyotes dig their way out of the Western Conference basement, you should be looking at other goaltending options.

Coyotes' Smith Pulled Thursday

News: Mike Smith was pulled in the second period Thursday against Los Angeles after allowing three goals on 20 shots.
Analysis: Mike Smith has been very poor this year and tonight's performance will make his numbers worse. At some point the Coyotes will have to consider going with backup Devan Dubnyk for a while to see if he can give them a better chance to win.

Coyotes Stand By Smith On Thursday

News: Mike Smith will draw the starting nod in goal Thursday versus the Kings, Craig Morgan of FOX Sports Arizona reports.
Analysis: It will mark the third straight turn for Mike Smith, who coach Dave Tippett has continued to stand by as his No. 1 goalie despite his mostly lousy play this season. Smith didn't face the Kings in the the only previous matchup between the two teams earlier this season, but does own 11-4-1 record, 2.16 GAA and .928 save percentage over his career against them. Even so, given the extent to which Smith has struggled this season, it will be hard to trust him against a superior opponent.

Coyotes' Smith Struggles Again

News: Mike Smith was stuck with four goals on just 23 shots in Tuesday's 5-2 loss to Calgary.
Analysis: He'd offered some hope with two solid outings in his prior three games, but Mike Smith simply can't establish any consistency. He's been a fantasy nightmare this year and should keep losing starts to backup Devan Dubnyk.

Coyotes To Start Smith On Tuesday

News: Mike Smith will be in the net Tuesday against the Flames, Todd Walsh of FOX Sports Arizona reports.
Analysis: Coach Dave Tippett will stick with Mike Smith for both ends of the Coyotes' back-to-back after the netminder held the Oilers to two goals on 27 shots Monday night to capture the win. The victory snapped a six-game losing streak for Smith, who should see continued opportunities to work through his off-and-on struggles and hold off Devan Dubnyk for regular duties.

Coyotes' Smith Finally Gets Win

News: Mike Smith allowed two goals on 27 shots Monday against Edmonton to pick up his first win in seven starts.
Analysis: Mike Smith had some decent starts during the losing streak, but also had four starts in which he allowed more than three goals. His numbers on the season (3.19 goals against and 89.4% save percentage) are terrible, which is resulting in some pressure from backup Devan Dubnyk. But, the Coyotes are committed to Smith as their starter and perhaps finally getting a win will get him back on track.

Coyotes' Smith Will Start Monday

News: Mike Smith will start Monday's game against the Oilers, Todd Walsh of Fox Sports Arizona reports.
Analysis: Mike Smith has lost his last seven starts for the struggling Coyotes, and currently leads the NHL with 11 regulation losses. The team in front of him hasn't been great, but he'll need to improve his .893 save percentage if he wants to continue to be a viable fantasy option in net.

Coyotes' Smith Allows Four In Loss

News: Mike Smith allowed four goals on 35 shots in Tuesday's loss to Colorado.
Analysis: With yet another loss, Mike Smith falls to 0-6-1 in his last seven starts. Yikes. He's had a couple good starts mixed in there, but four-plus-goal outings like this have been far from unusual for Smith this year.

Coyotes' Smith Lined Up To Start Tuesday

News: Mike Smith is set to start Tuesday's game against the Avalanche, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Mike Smith was the first goalie off the ice following Tuesday's morning skate, which puts him on track to start Tuesday. He will attempt to stop a six-game losing streak against a Colorado squad that is averaging just 2.43 goals per game on the season but has scored at least three times in five of its last seven games.

Coyotes' Smith Drops Sixth Straight

News: Mike Smith lost for the sixth straight game Sunday, giving up two goals on 30 shots against Anaheim.
Analysis: While Mike Smith played great in the loss, the goaltending situation developing in Arizona is quite interesting. Although Smith is the clear No.1 goalie, backup Devon Dubnyk has outplayed him thus far, posting a 5-0-1 record. Don't be worried though, as Smith played well enough Sunday to remind us why we put our faith in him in the first place. The wins will come sooner or later.

Coyotes' Smith To Start Sunday

News: Mike Smith will the starting goalie Sunday against the Ducks, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Mike Smith has been outplayed by backup Devan Dubnyk this season, and although there is no sign of an imminent goalie controversy it is not sustainable for Smith to perform this poorly without losing playing time. He already seems to be losing the trust of coach Dave Tippett, who turned to Dubnyk for the start in three of the Coyotes' previous five games.

Coyotes' Smith Drops Fifth Straight

News: Mike Smith took his fifth consecutive loss Thursday, giving up three goals on 27 shots against the Stars.
Analysis: Two days after posting a respectable performance in an overtime loss to Washington, Mike Smith got back to putting up unpleasant stat lines. At this point, Devan Dubnyk -- who's easily outplayed Smith, especially lately -- has to be getting serious consideration for some extended run in goal.

Coyotes Will Start Smith On Thursday

News: Mike Smith led the Coyotes on to the ice for pregame warmups and will be in the crease Thursday against the Stars, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Though riding a four-game losing streak, Mike Smith was steady his last time out Tuesday against the Capitals, stopping 22 of 24 shots before falling in overtime. He'll look to get back in the win column against his former team, against whom he's posted a 7-4-5 record, 2.09 GAA and .925 save percentage over his 16 previous career outings.

Coyotes' Smith Respectable In OT Loss

News: Mike Smith allowed two goals on 24 shots in Tuesday's overtime loss to the Capitals.
Analysis: Mike Smith turned in a much-needed strong outing in this one, but failed to bring home a win for the fourth consecutive start. The strong effort will help him hold off Devan Dubnyk for No. 1 duties, but Smith will need to continue turning in solid work to prevent the Coyotes from turning to Dubnyk, who's collected half of the team's eight wins so far despite starting just five games to Smith's 14.

Coyotes' Smith To Start Tuesday

News: Mike Smith will be in goal for Tuesday's game against the Capitals.
Analysis: Mike Smith will look to get back on track Tuesday after losing three in a row before watching Devan Dubnyk claim victories while making the start for the Coyotes in their last two games. He will square off against a Capitals team that will enter Tuesday's game having scored just one goal in its last two games.

Coyotes' Smith Gives Up Five, Loses Again

News: Mike Smith allowed five goals on 25 shots in Thursday's loss to Calgary.
Analysis: Just another defeat for Mike Smith, who looked like he was righting the ship over a five-game stretch of impressive play, but has since regressed, giving up nine goals over the last two games. The Coyotes will probably go with Devan Dubnyk on Friday in Vancouver as they play the second of a back-to-back set.

Coyotes To Start Smith On Thursday

News: Mike Smith was the first goalie off the ice at morning skate and will receive the starting nod in goal Thursday against the Flames, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Mike Smith has paired back-to-back wins with consecutive losses over his last four turns, making it difficult for him to establish a rhythm in what has been a disappointing season overall. His 3.29 GAA and .895 save percentage over 12 games remain well below the league average, and a matchup against a Flames squad that has played much better than expected this season might not afford him a good opportunity to improve upon those numbers.

Coyotes' Smith Gives Up Four In Loss

News: Mike Smith allowed four goals on 32 shots in Tuesday's loss to the Stars.
Analysis: While wins have been hard to come by for Mike Smith, he'd been on a roll over the last three games, giving up just five goals in total. He's not getting much offensive support either, as the 'Yotes haven't scored more than three goals for him since Oct. 15.

Coyotes' Smith To Start Tuesday

News: Mike Smith will get the start Tuesday against Dallas, according to Craig Morgan of Fox Sports Arizona.
Analysis: Mike Smith will be starting his fourth straight for the Coyotes. He's played better of late, but his overall numbers on the season (4-7-0, 3.22 GAA, .897 save percentage) remain ugly.

Coyotes' Smith Prepared To Start Saturday

News: Mike Smith will be between the pipes Saturday against the Islanders.
Analysis: Coach Dave Tippett will go with Mike Smith for both ends of the back-to-back after the goalie stopped 37 of 39 pucks in a win over Anaheim on Friday. Smith has started to find himself in the net, but his brutal start to the season continues to dampen his overall numbers (3.43 GAA, .889 save percentage).

Smith's 32 Saves Can't Save Coyotes

News: Mike Smith stopped all but one of the 33 shots he faced in Saturday's loss to the Islanders.
Analysis: It was a great outing for Mike Smith, but unfortunately the team's offense couldn't come through, as the Coyotes were outshot 33-19 and blanked by a 1-0 score. The good news is Smith has been playing great hockey as of late, posting an 2-1-0 record in his last three games and stopping 97 of 102 shots in that span. He's on track to play a whopping number of games this season and with the way he's been playing recently, more wins should be on the way.

Coyotes' Smith Earns Win Friday

News: Mike Smith stopped 37 of 39 shots before winning 3-2 in a shootout over the Ducks on Friday.
Analysis: This is the Mike Smith whom owners were hoping for when they drafted him this year. It certainly didn't hurt that Ducks superstar Corey Perry (illness) sat out, but Smith still weathered a flurry of shots and earned his fourth win of the year. If he can put forth a few more stellar performances like this, his .889 save percentage and 3.43 GAA will improve in no time.
