Coyotes' Smith Saves 39 In Shootout Loss

News: Mike Smith stopped 39 of 42, but absorbed a 4-3 shootout loss Tuesday in Philadelphia.
Analysis: A strong outing for Mike Smith, but it still goes down as his sixth consecutive losing effort. Still, he's posted save marks of .900 or better in three of the last four games, so he's got something to build on.

Coyotes' Smith Confirmed For Tuesday

News: Mike Smith has been confirmed as the starter in goal for Tuesday's game against the Flyers, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Mike Smith will man the net for the Coyotes, while Ray Emery assumes the opposite crease for the Flyers. It's the first game of a five-city eastern road trip for the Coyotes, who actually sports a near-.500 record against the other conference (5-6-1) this season. The next week might present a rare opportunity to pick up wins for Smith, whose record sits at just 7-20-3 entering the second half.

Coyotes' Smith Projected To Start Tuesday

News: Mike Smith is projected to start Tuesday's game against the Flyers, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: After trading Devan Dubnyk to the Wild prior to the All-Star break, the Coyotes effectively committed to Mike Smith as their No. 1 goalie for the rest of the season. While his usage should be heavier than most other netminders the rest of the way, it will be hard for fantasy owners to extract much value from Smith while he sits on a sub-.900 save percentage for the season. Ideally, he should be kept out of active lineups until he starts to notice some sustained success.

Smith, Coyotes Bombarded In Loss

News: Mike Smith made 45 saves Tuesday against the Blackhawks, but also allowed six goals en route to a 6-1 defeat.
Analysis: On the one hand, it's hard to blame the guy when he gets 51 shots put on him, but on the other hand, Mike Smith has been patently awful this year, so it's not hard to consider this game yet another mark against him. He's 0-4-1 in his last five starts and has now been tagged for four or more goals a ridiculous 13 times in 30 starts. That's how you end up with a 7-20-3 record at the All-Star break.

Coyotes Go With Smith On Tuesday

News: Mike Smith is slated to start Tuesday's game against Chicago, Craig Morgan of Fox Sports Arizona reports.
Analysis: Mike Smith owns a 7-19-3 record, with a 3.43 GAA and .887 save percentage to date, so he's obviously a speculative play against the Hawks on Tuesday.

Coyotes' Smith Suffers Shootout Loss

News: Mike Smith stopped 27 of 30 shots but allowed the only goal of the shootout of the game in Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Jets.
Analysis: Mike Smith didn't turn in a bad performance, but it'll be his fourth loss in a row and fifth in his last six. On the season the 32-year-old is 7-19-3 with a 3.43 GAA and .887 save percentage, so there isn't really any upside from a fantasy perspective.

Coyotes' Smith Starting Sunday

News: Mike Smith will get the start in goal Sunday against the Jets.
Analysis: Mike Smith will look to end a three-game losing streak after he allowed two goals in a 3-1 loss to Minnesota on Saturday. On the season, Smith is just 7-19-2 with a 3.45 GAA and .887 save percentage.

Coyotes Likely To Stick With Smith

News: Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic indicates that Mike Smith is on track to start Sunday's game against the Jets.
Analysis: Mike Smith, who allowed two goals on 32 shots in Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Wild, will look Sunday to snap a three-game losing streak that has dropped his record to 7-19-2.

Coyotes' Smith Gives Up Two Goals In Loss

News: Mike Smith surrendered two goals on 32 shots in Saturday's loss to the Wild.
Analysis: While Mike Smith was great against Devan Dubnyk and the Wild, he's now lost three straight games. With a lackluster 7-19-2 record on the season, Smith has been a big fantasy disappointment thus far. Smith is the clear no.1 in Phoenix, but with an NHL-worst 19 losses, there are better options out there. He will see a massive workload, but don't expect good win totals or rate stats.

Coyotes' Smith Gets Nod Saturday

News: Mike Smith will be in the net Saturday against the Wild, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: The Wild ended a long losing streak Thursday by exploding for seven goals against the Sabres, and it's not difficult to envision Mike Smith having similar troubling containing Minnesota. Smith has surrendered eight combined goals over his last two turns, which has become the norm for the goalie at this point. Smith's horrid 3.51 GAA and .885 save percentage have yielded a 7-18-2 record across 28 appearances this season, making it hard to extract fantasy value from him.

Coyotes' Smith Takes Loss To Flames

News: Mike Smith, back in the full-time starting role for Arizona following the Devan Dubnyk trade, allowed three goals on 24 shots in Thursday's loss to the Flames.
Analysis: It's just another bad outing and another loss for Mike Smith. Coyotes GM Don Maloney said after trading Dubnyk to the Wild that this deal will allow Smith to take over a full-time role in goal, as if that's a good thing. He's won just three times in his last 18 appearances (17 starts) and has posted a save percentage over .900 only five times in that span. In truth, the trade seems to indicate that the Coyotes are tanking for a better draft pick more than anything else.

Coyotes Stick With Smith

News: Mike Smith will start Thursday's game against the Flames.
Analysis: With Devan Dubnyk having been traded to the Wild, Michael Lee is slated to serve as Mike Smith's backup on Thursday. Per GM Don Maloney, one of the Coyotes' motivations for dealing Dubnyk was to reinforce the franchise's commitment to Smith as the team's No. 1 goalie. According to Maloney, the trade will "put Smith back in our net on a permanent basis to get him back to the level we know he can play at. We believe in Mike."

Yotes' Smith Lays Egg In Loss To Ottawa

News: Mike Smith, who was coming off his best performance in over a month, struggled in a 5-1 loss to Ottawa on Saturday night. He made 28 saves.
Analysis: The Yotes took a lead and he gave up five straight goals. He is mired in his worst statistical season of his career and should be counted on only in sheer desperation. Yes, it has gotten that bad.

Coyotes' Smith To Start Saturday

News: Mike Smith will start his fourth straight game Saturday against Ottawa, reports Craig Morgan of Fox Sports Arizona.
Analysis: Mike Smith is coming of his best performance more than a month after yielding just one goal on 35 shots against Winnipeg on Thursday. His .886 save percentage and 3.46 GAA on the year are awful, but with the Coyotes effectively out of the playoff picture, they can afford to see if he figured something out in his last start.

Coyotes' Smith Bounces Back With Win

News: Mike Smith bounced back from Tuesday's six-goal disaster with a 34-save performance in Thursday's 4-1 win over the Jets.
Analysis: This has been the essential enigma of Mike Smith, who's made a habit of following surprisingly competent outings with painfully terrible ones. In that light, it's hard to recommend him as a fantasy play in most formats.

Coyotes' Smith To Get Thursday Start

News: Mike Smith will receive the start in goal Thursday against the Jets.
Analysis: Mike Smith was dump-trucked for six goals in Tuesday's blanking at the hands of the Blues, but it won't prevent coach Dave Tippett from desperately standing by his franchise netminder, who has looked anything but the part this season. Incidentally enough, Smith's struggles really began in the opener against Winnipeg, who also overwhelmed him for six goals. Smith can't be counted on to come through with a strong performance in the rematch.

Coyotes' Smith Blown Up For Six In Loss

News: Mike Smith was tagged for six goals on 39 shots in Tuesday's shutout loss to the Blues.
Analysis: Just another terrible outing for Mike Smith -- his seventh consecutive appearance with a save mark under .900. While he turns in the (very) occasional solid start, Smith is essentially unplayable for fantasy purposes with how bad he's been this year. As usual, he gave up several soft goals Tuesday -- many that even an AHL netminder shouldn't allow. He's been beaten for 18 goals in his last four starts, and there's no sign of things getting better.

Coyotes' Smith Confirmed For Tuesday

News: Mike Smith has been confirmed as the starter Tuesday versus the Blues.
Analysis: Mike Smith earns his second straight start after a modestly successful return to the ice over the weekend, as he limited the Blue Jackets to three goals on 26 shots in a 6-3 win. As the score would suggest, Smith benefited from some strong offensive support to claim the victory, so it can't be said that he's turned the corner from his woeful start to the season. He'll carry a 6-15-2 record, 3.46 GAA and .884 save percentage into Tuesday's match.

Coyotes' Smith Likely To Start Tuesday

News: Mike Smith is the favorite to start Tuesday's game against the Blues, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Mike Smith did not take the ice for the Coyotes' optional Tuesday morning skate, so it appears he will start his second straight game Tuesday night. Expect confirmation of Arizona's starting goaltender sometime before the first puck is dropped.

'Yotes Smith: First Win Since Dec. 1

News: Mike Smith stopped 23 shots Saturday and won his first game since Dec. 1. The struggling goalie allowed three goals.
Analysis: He has all but lost the crease to Devan Dubnyk, so this game was a good start to resurrecting his career as a starter.

Coyotes Return Net To Smith On Saturday

News: Mike Smith will return to the crease Saturday against the Blue Jackets, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: It's the first start for Mike Smith in four games, after his last outing resulted in an early yank when he surrendered four goals on the first 11 shots he faced. Aside from an inexplicably poor outing on New Year's Eve, Devan Dubnyk turned in quality performances while replacing Smith, winning three of his starts. That's probably enough to give him the top spot on the depth chart for now above Smith, who has lost 12 of his last 13 turns to drop to 5-15-2 on the season.

Coyotes' Smith Pulled In Disastrous Outing

News: Mike Smith was yanked after giving up four goals on just 11 shots in Monday's 7-1 beatdown at the hands of the Canucks.
Analysis: The only possible silver lining here for Mike Smith was that Devan Dubnyk wasn't exactly spectacular in relief, allowing three goals of his own on 29 shots. Normally a reliable netminder, Smith has had an awful season to date, posting a 5-15-2 record for the 28th-place Coyotes, while his 3.48 save percentage and .884 save percentage are way off his career marks of 2.64 and .912. One has to wonder if there are others factors at play here for the 2014 Olympic gold medalist. Regardless, he is certainly one backstopper to avoid in fantasy leagues at this point.

Coyotes' Smith Gets The Start Monday

News: Mike Smith will be between the pipes for Monday's game against the Canucks.
Analysis: Mike Smith is mired in a deep slump that has seen him win just once since Nov. 7. He will square off against a Vancouver team that snapped a five-game losing streak its last time out with a 3-2 overtime victory over the Flames.

Coyotes' Smith Lit Up For Five In Another Loss

News: Mike Smith was tagged for five goals on 38 shots in Thursday's loss to Nashville.
Analysis: Just the latest in a series of poor outings for Mike Smith -- his fourth consecutive game with a save mark under .900. The only silver lining is that Devan Dubnyk hasn't played quite well enough recently to seize the job from him, but the 32-year-old Smith has been perhaps the worst starting goalie in the league.

Coyotes' Smith Likely To Get Call Thursday

News: Mike Smith is expected to start for the Coyotes in goal Thursday against the Predators, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Mike Smith was the first goalie off the ice for morning skate and appears primed to reenter the crease after Devan Dubnyk was roasted for four goals on 24 shots in the Coyotes' most recent game Saturday before getting pulled. With a league-leading 13 losses to go along with a 3.27 GAA, only Smith's six-year, $34 million contract extension is affording him job security in his role as the team's No. 1 goalie.
