Coyotes' Smith In The Crease Tuesday

News: Mike Smith will be in the net Tuesday against the Ducks, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Mike Smith dropped his eighth straight game Saturday against the Bruins and only saw his team context dip further south when the Coyotes dealt No. 1 center Antoine Vermette to the Blackhawks hours later and top blueliner Keith Yandle to the Rangers on Sunday. With the Coyotes demonstrating no desire to be competitive over the final few weeks of the season, it's hard to imagine many scenarios where Smith will enter the night as a favorite to pick up the win. That certainly won't be the case against the Ducks, who outpace the Coyotes by 40 points in the Western Conference standings.

Coyotes' Smith Pulled Saturday In Loss

News: Mike Smith was pulled in the second period Saturday after allowing four goals on 20 shots in a 4-1 loss to the Bruins.
Analysis: This is Mike Smith's third consecutive game giving up more than four goals. On almost any other team he would have been benched, but since the Coyotes traded Devan Dubnyk it looks like they will stick with him. With a 3.34 goals against and .894 save percentage, Smith is putting up a below replacement-level performance this year.

Coyotes Stick With Slumping Smith On Saturday

News: Mike Smith will be between the pipes for Saturday's game against the Bruins, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: With seven straight losses on his ledger to drop his season record to a woeful 10-29-5, Mike Smith isn't worth keeping active in most formats at this point. The Bruins might not be nearly as formidable as they were at this point last season, but they're still a much more competitive team than the Coyotes, who have made no secret of their desire to bottom out this season. As such, Smith will be a heavy underdog nearly every time he takes the net the rest of the way.

Smith, Coyotes Blow Lead In Loss

News: Mike Smith allowed four goals on 38 shots to lose for the seventh consecutive start Thursday against the Rangers.
Analysis: Staked to a 3-1 lead at the first intermission, Mike Smith let the Rangers tie it near the end of the second, and then allowed the winner to Lee Stempniak late in the third. Still, Smith made a boatload of highlight-reel-worthy saves in this one, and the final result can be attributed to him being hung out to dry countless times by a Coyotes defense that couldn't avoid turnover or prevent the Rangers from maintaining offensive-zone puck possession. At least Smith has been looking confident in goal lately; that offers some promise for the future if the Coyotes can play better in their own end.

Coyotes Go With Smith On Thursday

News: Mike Smith will man the cage for the Coyotes in Thursday's game against the Rangers, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Mike Smith has lost his last six starts while conceding at least three goals in four of those outings. Needless to say, he doesn't make for a strong starting option against a Rangers attack that's averaging 3.10 goals per game, good for third in the league.

Coyotes' Smith Has Tough Night Tuesday

News: Mike Smith allowed five goals on 39 shots Tuesday in a 5-1 blowout at the hands of the Islanders.
Analysis: After several strong performances earlier in February, Mike Smith has struggled recently. He's allowed more than three goals in four of his last five starts, with two five-goal performances coming during that stretch. He is playing behind a leaky defense, and until he or the team shows some notable improvement, it's best to stash him on your bench.

Coyotes Stick With Smith On Tuesday

News: Mike Smith is slated to start Tuesday's game against the Islanders, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Mike Smith will try to help the Coyotes' end a six-game slide on Tuesday, but he'll have his work cut out for him up against an Isles' squad that is tied for second in the Eastern Conference with 80 points to date.

Coyotes' Smith Loses Again Monday

News: Mike Smith surrendered two goals on 27 shots in Monday's 3-0 loss to the Devils.
Analysis: It's the fifth straight loss for Mike Smith and seventh in his last eight starts. The good news is that his own performance was better on Monday as he had allowed 11 goals in his last three, but his overall numbers aren't getting any better as he's 10-27-5 with a 3.23 GAA and .896 save percentage. Smith should receive nearly every start the rest of the way, but he'll make for a risky fantasy play nonetheless.

Coyotes Turn To Smith On Monday

News: Mike Smith is slated to start Monday's game against New Jersey, NHL.com's Mike Morreale reports.
Analysis: Mike Smith, who has allowed 11 goals over his last three starts, will look to snap a four-game losing streak Monday against a New Jersey team that has earned three straight wins.

Coyotes' Smith Gives Up Three Goals In Loss

News: Mike Smith gave up three goals on 26 shots in Saturday's loss to the Lightning.
Analysis: It was the third straight loss for Mike Smith, who has given up at least three goals in each of his last three starts. While he had been playing better of late, Smith's lackluster .895 save percentage and 3.26 GAA on the season are quite the letdown. He plays a lot of games, but has just 10 wins, something that will happen when you're the goaltender for the offensively challenged Coyotes.

Coyotes' Smith Will Start Saturday

News: Mike Smith (illness) will start Saturday against the Lightning, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: After sitting Monday with an illness, Mike Smith will return Saturday, as expected, to oppose Tampa's Ben Bishop. The matchup is certainly tough but Smith has played well in seven February outings to this point, posting a 2.26 GAA and .930 save percentage.

Coyotes' Smith (Illness) Expected To Start

News: Mike Smith (illness) is expected to start the next few games, Sarah McLellan of The Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Mike Smith missed Monday's game against the Avalanche, but he's apparently expected to start the next stretch of games, starting with Saturday's contest against Tampa Bay. It's a tough part of the schedule, with Saturday's matchup followed by games against the Devils (Mon.), Islanders (Tue.), Rangers (Thurs.) and Bruins (Sat.).

Coyotes' Smith Feeling Under The Weather

News: Mike Smith is dealing with an illness and will not get the start on Monday against the Avalanche, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: It doesn't seem as though it's a particularly serious ailment as coach Dave Tippett said Mike Smith still could've played, but they'll turn to backup Mike McKenna to air on the side of caution. The Coyotes have the next four days off, so Smith could be back in net for their next game against the Lightning on Saturday.

Coyotes' Smith Lets In Five Goals In Loss

News: Mike Smith let in five goals on 32 shots Saturday in a loss to the Rangers.
Analysis: Mike Smith had been playing well recently, allowing less than three goals in five of his last six games before this one. It has been a disastrous season for Smith, and despite performing better in recent weeks, he will face some more tough games once the Coyotes start to ship out more of their veterans ahead of the trade deadline.

Coyotes' Smith Will Start Saturday

News: Mike Smith will get the start between the pipes Saturday against the Rangers, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Mike Smith has registered losses in three of his last four starts, despite posting save percentages above .920 in three of those outings. It won't get any easier for Smith on Saturday against the Rangers, who average 3.04 goals per game, good for fourth in the NHL. Those playing in daily leagues may want to look elsewhere for a goalie option.

Yotes` Smith Loses Again Friday

News: Mike Smith allowed three goals on 25 shots in a 4-2 loss to the Sharks on Friday. The Sharks' fourth goal came with an empty net.
Analysis: Mike Smith`s mini-run of improved play (two goals or less in five straight starts) came to an end in this one, dropping his record to a horrendous 10-24-5 this season. His 3.22 GAA and .897 save percentage are way off his career marks of 2.65 and .912, so it`s tough to recommend the Olympic gold medalist for any league right now.

Coyotes' Smith Starting Friday

News: Mike Smith will start Friday's game against the Sharks, NHL.com's Dave Vest reports.
Analysis: Mike Smith has allowed either one or two goals in each of his five February starts, but he only owns a 2-2-1 record for the month, thanks to a lack of offensive support. Friday's game will mark his sixth consecutive start.

Smith Excels, But Coyotes Get Edged By Blues

News: Mike Smith saved 34 of 36 shots in Tuesday's 2-1 loss to the Blues.
Analysis: It's another loss, but it's also another credible outing for the veteran goalie, and it came against a high-quality opponent. In fact, he's been pretty fantastic in the month of February -- although he has just a 2-2-1 record thanks to the Coyotes' ailing offense, Mike Smith has allowed just eight goals in five starts this month and hasn't posted a save mark under .920 in any of those outings. Quietly snatch him up from the wire if he was dumped by a frustrated owner.

Coyotes' Smith Earns Another Start

News: Mike Smith will be in the crease for Tuesday's game against the Blues, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: For seemingly the first time all season, Mike Smith has established some momentum in goal. He's given up two or fewer goals and posted save percentages above .920 in five of his last six starts, going 3-2-1 in those contests. The last two of those starts came against top-notch opponents in the Red Wings and Blackhawks, and he'll receive a similarly tough test Tuesday against the high-scoring Blues. Smith's recent improvement might give fantasy owners more confidence in the goalie compared to two weeks ago, but this matchup is one that's probably best left avoided.

Yotes' Smith Bests Blackhawks In Shootout

News: Mike Smith was brilliant Monday, making 36 saves on 38 shots in a 3-2 shootout win over the Blackhawks.
Analysis: What a performance for the veteran, who has now allowed two goals or less in five of his last six games. It's no secret that Mike Smith's season has been nothing short of a disaster (.896 save percentage, 3.25 GAA, 10 wins in 38 appearances) but he's been much sharper lately and could provide sneaky fantasy value as the Coyotes play the role of spoiler down the stretch.

Coyotes' Smith Expected To Take Back-To-Back Set

News: Coach Dave Tippett indicated Mike Smith will likely receive the start on both of the Coyotes' back-to-back games Monday and Tuesday, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Mike Smith hasn't been blowing anyone away with his performances in net, but he's been solid over his last three starts, allowing just four goals in that span. Given the options the Coyotes have between the pipes, it wouldn't come as a surprise if Smith is indeed the netminder for both contests.

Coyotes' Smith Falls To Red Wings

News: Mike Smith stopped 23 of 25 shots in Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Red Wings.
Analysis: Though he might have taken a second straight loss, Mike Smith's steady performances since the All-Star break at least make him a playable fantasy goalie. While there's not much upside in the wins category on a Coyotes roster lacking in high-end offensive talent, Smith can still offer some value if he can at least keep his ratios closer to his career norms the rest of the way. Even with some expected second-half improvement, Smith still has a long way to go in order to bring his season numbers (3.30 GAA, .894 save percentages) to even below-average territory.

Coyotes' Smith Gets Saturday Nod

News: Mike Smith will be in the cage for Saturday's game against the Red Wings, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: Mike Smith has gone 2-1-1 over his last four starts while conceding exactly one goal in three of those contests, but those efforts came against the weak attacks of the Maple Leafs, Blue Jackets, and Hurricanes. The same can't be said about the Red Wings, who rank seventh in the league with 2.94 goals per game. Don't read too much into Smith's recent positive sample, as he'll need to string together some more quality outings before fantasy owners forget the bind that he's already put them in.

Coyotes To Start Smith On Thursday

News: Mike Smith will be in the net for Thursday's game against the Hurricanes.
Analysis: Mike Smith has been inconsistent in his four starts out of the All-Star break, holding the Maple Leafs and Blue Jackets to one goal apiece in victories while giving up a combined eight goals to the Flyers and Senators in defeats. That's actually an improvement over his play prior to the break, when he was pretty consistently awful. As such, it remains difficult to trust Smith as a fantasy option in daily formats even against a doormat like the Hurricanes, who rank 29th in the NHL in scoring.

Coyotes' Smith Sparkles In Shootout Loss

News: Mike Smith stopped 40 of 41 through regulation and overtime, but gave up the only shootout goal to end up with another loss Thursday against Carolina.
Analysis: Mike Smith's stat lines have been interesting lately, as he's given up just a single goal in three of his last four games -- but five in the other. He still can't be considered reliable by any stretch, but it is worth noting that Smith's looked significantly better since the All-Star break. He might even be ownable for fantasy purposes.
