Analysis: With Friday's trade of Craig Anderson to Ottawa, Budaj will now be competing with newly acquired Brian Elliott for the Avs' starting goalie duties. "The job is open," said coach Joe Sacco. "There will be some competition, obviously, for that spot. Obviously we're going to give Brian an opportunity to see where he's at and how he fits in, and give him a chance to play as well. We're in a situation where we're looking for results right now." With Budaj winless in his last 10 appearances, the Avs will gladly give Elliott a chance to win the starting gig. Elliott won't join the team until next week, so expect Budaj to continue to carry the ball for the time being.

Avs' Budaj Gets Starting Nod Against Preds Saturday

Analysis: With Craig Anderson still on a temporary leave of absence while he tends to a personal matter, Budaj will close out the Avs' current four-game road trip in Nashville. Budaj was between the pipes Friday against Columbus and played well, but took a 2-1 loss as the Avs' forwards continue to struggle in the goal-scoring department. Until the team can find a way to kick-start their offense, deploying any Avs goalie represents a significant fantasy risk.

Analysis: He only surrendered a pair of goals before the Ducks secured the win with a late empty-net goal. Given how poorly Craig Anderson has played recently, we'd hardly be surprised if Saturday's performance earns Budaj another tap on the pads when the Avs return to action Monday against the Coyotes.

Analysis: This is not much of a surprise, as Craig Anderson has lost four straight starts and overall is a disappointing 13-13-3 on the season. The Avs are desperate to get themselves back in the playoff picture, so you could see Budaj back between the pipes Monday against Phoenix if he has a solid outing Saturday. Monitor this one closely.

The start will be the 20th game of the season for Budaj, who has a 9-6-3 record, a 3.05 goals-against average and an .897 save percentage. He's still considered to be the Avs' #2 guy behind Anderson, but a strong start against the Sabres would go a long way toward leveling the playing field.

Avs' Budaj Gets Starting Nod Saturday Against Lightning
News: Budaj will get the start Saturday against Tampa Bay, according to the Denver Post's Adrian Dater.
Analysis: This is not surprising, as Craig Anderson started Friday's game against Carolina after missing three games with a groin strain, and coach Joe Sacco probably doesn't want to push him too hard given his injury history this year. We expect Anderson to be back between the pipes to face his former team - the Florida Panthers - on Wednesday.
News: Budaj stopped 28 of 31 shots in Tuesday's 3-2 overtime loss to Atlanta.
Analysis: Budaj is going to get some playing time with Craig Anderson (groin) out, but he's struggled for the majority of the year and he makes for a poor fantasy option on most nights.
News: Saturday's contest against Minnesota was good news and bad news and good news for Budaj. The good news was that he finally ended his six-game string of yielding exactly three goals per night. The bad news was thay he surrendered four to the Wild. The good news was that he won anyway, as his teammates lit the lamp seven times, a scoring high for the franchise this season.
Analysis: He managed 28 saves, but don't mistake him for a solid fantasy option. As he is with the Colorado coaching staff, he's for emergency use only. Unfortunately for the Avs, there's an emergency, in that starter Craig Anderson is injured, leading to three starts in four nights for Budaj. Don't let that "emergency" hamstring your fantasy team's fortunes; find someone more reliable.

Analysis: To give Budaj credit, two of the goals were on Daniel and Henrik Sedin magic, while the third bounced up into the air and was deflected into the net by his own mask. Some nights are like this, and with Craig Anderson leaving with a groin injury, Budaj may be back.
News: Budaj will get the start Saturday in Dallas, according to the Denver Post.
Analysis: Craig Anderson won for the Avs on Friday and looked good doing so in his return from a knee injury, but Budaj certainly played well enough during Anderson's absence that he deserves to get his share of starts for the time being as well, especially with the team in a back-to-back situation.
News: Budaj stopped 40 of 43 shots in a 4-3 overtime against San Jose on Wednesday.
Analysis: Budaj is making a case for continued playing time when starter Craig Anderson comes back by standing on his head for most of Wednesday's game. Analysis: Budaj has alternated wins and losses in his last seven starts, so considering he won last time out, he would be due for a loss if the trend continues. Still, that is anything but a scientific means of analysis, so use Budaj at your discretion Wednesday.

Analysis: This is good news for Budaj and fantasy owners alike. However, with reports of Craig Anderson practicing Monday for the first time since injuring his knee in late October, Budaj has a limited number of regular starts left. Despite this outing, we think he's only a fair long-term play in the crease; his ice time will take a hit when teammate Craig Anderson's knee heals.

Analysis: Budaj has adapted well to his backup role in 2009-10. He usually does a good job when he has to replace or spell Anderson. Unfortunately, he has made just 13 appearances, so Budaj hasn't had to be called on much. Budaj remains a poor Fantasy option.

Analysis: Budaj is merely a handcuff for Craig Anderson -- albeit a damn good one, allowing just 22 goals in 12 games this season. The Avalanche TG is an elite Fantasy option.

News: Avalanche G Peter Budaj made 18 saves during a 2-1 loss to the Hurricanes on Friday. Ray Whitney scored both goals for Carolina. Whitney made it a two-goal game 37 seconds into the second period, skating down the right side, faking a slap shot and instead sneaking a wrist shot past Budaj for his 13th goal. Brandon Yip scored with 16 seconds left, but Colorado couldn't pull of the comeback.
Analysis: Give Budaj a lot of credit for his performance in 2009-10. He has taken his role as a seldom-used backup to work on his game and he has actually improved since December. He hasn't allowed more than two goals in his last eight appearances. Budaj is really only useful in Fantasy when Craig Anderson is injured. The Avalanche TG is a No. 2 option.

Analysis: Budaj has been superb this season when he's got starts over Craig Anderson, but he remains the concrete No. 2 in Denver for the time being. He's only worth owning as a handcuff to Anderson, while the Avs TG is just about back to being a No. 1 Fantasy option now that the team is winning again.
News: The Colorado Avalanche saw enough from starting goalie Craig Anderson by the end of the 2nd period on Tuesday against the Washington Capitals. That is because Anderson allowed two goals in the 1st period and three more in the 2nd and the Avs were trailing 5-0 by the time they removed the starter for Peter Budaj. Anderson stopped 16 shots of the 21 shots he faced before Budaj took over. Budaj wasn’t bad the rest of the way but the damage was done as the Capitals won the game 6-1 and Anderson took the loss. Budaj ended up allowing one goal on four shot attempts and making three saves.
Analysis: The loss drops Anderson’s record to 16-8-5 on the season. He’s clearly been successful this year but Tuesday’s outing against Washington was a train wreck from the beginning. He had won his previous two starts but gave up five goals in the start prior to those wins. He’s slightly inconsistent of late for the Avs and that limits him to that of a No. 2 Fantasy G. Budaj doesn’t play enough to warrant Fantasy consideration as anything but a stopgap at this time and the Avalanche TG is also a No. 2 Fantasy option.

Budaj had 21 saves for Colorado, which has lost three straight at home but only one in regulation. The Wild scored the only goal they needed 5:57 in when Miettinen pounced on Andrew Brunette's rebound for his eighth goal of the season. The Avalanche had several chances to tie it in the first, but they couldn't capitalize on three power-play opportunities.
Analysis: Budaj had won his previous two starts and has allowed only five goals in four straight starts since taking over for the injured Craig Anderson (neck). This is about his best run in a long time. Unfortunately, Anderson is working his way back into game shape, so Budaj could find himself on the bench shortly. Budaj remains more of a stopgap Fantasy start. The Avalanche TG is a No. 2 Fantasy option.

News:Stephen Weiss recorded his second NHL hat trick and scored in the shootout to lift the Panthers to a 6-5 victory over the Colorado Avalanche and former teammate Craig Anderson on Wednesday. Unfortunately, Anderson didn't finish the game Wednesday due to an injury and Peter Budaj replaced him in overtime. Keith Ballard was involved in another scary incident on Wednesday after clubbing his own goalie -- Tomas Vokoun -- in the head Monday. Charging toward the net with less than a minute left in overtime, Ballard slid toward the net and appeared to collide with Anderson, whose head hit the goal post. "He wasn't running the goalie," Florida captain Bryan McCabe said. "He either lost an [skate] edge or was hit. He hit him for sure, but didn't mean to. He was on his butt. How can you stop?" Anderson remained on the ice for a few minutes after the collision and was replaced by Budaj, who allowed only Weiss to score among five shooters. Facing his former team for the first time, Anderson stopped 39 shots.
Analysis: Anderson might have been removed on Wednesday as a precaution. He skated off the ice under his own power and the team didn't say much after the game. We might find out more in the coming days, so stay tuned. If Anderson is out a long period, then Budaj becomes the starter in Colorado. Until that happens, he has low-end Fantasy appeal.
