Toronto's Sjostrom Quiet

News: Sjostrom totaled no points or penalty minutes in 10:56 of ice time against Carolina on Wednesday.
Analysis: Sjostrom is very unlikely to make a fantasy impact in any scenario, as he has just five points in 60 games this year.

Toronto's Sjostrom Will Miss Time

News: Sjostrom (upper body) could be out for up to a week, Toronto Globe & Mail writer James Mirtle reports.
Analysis: Sjostrom's absence likely won't be significant for Toronto, as he has just five points in 58 games to go along with a minus-7 rating.

Toronto's Sjostrom Adds Goal In Tuesday's Win

News: Sjostrom found the net for his second goal of the season Tuesday in a 5-3 win over the Islanders.
Analysis: This was Sjostrom's first point since Feb. 3, when he made his return from a leg injury.

Leafs' Sjostrom Still Not 100 Percent

News: Sjostrom, who was expecting to play Saturday but did not, will be a game-time decision Monday due to the right leg injury suffered January 6, TSN.ca reports.
Analysis: The Leafs finish out their pre-All-Star schedule Tuesday at Tampa Bay, so if we don't see Sjostrom the next two nights we'll have to assume he'll be close to 100 percent once the league's festivities are over this weekend. Jay Rosehill will slot in if Sjostrom can't go Monday.

Maple Leafs' Sjostrom Returns to Lineup Saturday

News: Sjostrom (leg) is expected to return to the Maple Leafs' lineup Saturday, the Toronto Sun reports.
Analysis: Sjostrom has missed the Maple Leafs' previous four games. He will likely be back in his wing role.

Leafs' Sjostrom Doubtful For Saturday

News: Coach Ron Wilson called Sjostrom, who is out with a leg injury, "probably doubtful" for Saturday's contest against Calgary and said he would make his lineup decision at game time, the Toronto Star reports.
Analysis: Brett Lebda will take Skostrom's place in the lineup if he is unable to go.

Leafs' Sjostrom: Right Leg Injury

News: Sjostrom left Thursday's game early in the first with a right leg injury. He was able to return to the ice later in the second period.
Analysis: He was unable to bear any weight on the leg after his knee hit the backboards full force. He had toe picked just seconds before the impact so his leg and knee were in a very vulnerable position on impact. It's good to see him back.

Leafs' Sjostrom: Misses Practice

News: Sjostrom missed practice Sunday after taking a shot off the leg in Saturday's game against Montreal, according to a report on Toronto's AM640.
Analysis: He was hobbled by the shot but stayed on the PK until the zone could be cleared. We don't know yet if it's a day-to-day or longer-term issue.

Sjostrom to Skate on Leafs' Third Line Wednesday

News: Sjostrom (shoulder surgery) will suit up Wednesday for exhibition action against Ottawa, reports the Toronto Star.
Analysis: He took in a full practice Tuesday for the first time this season and will skate on the Leafs' third line Wednesday night. He's a lock for the main roster but only offers fantasy value in the deepest of leagues. He's a defensive specialist.

Sjostrom Could Be Ready for Leafs' Opener

News: Sjostrom (shoulder) says he's ahead of schedule in his rehab, the Globe and Mail's James Mirtle reports.
Analysis: Last week, various reports indicated he was about a month away, so if he's ahead of schedule, there seems to be a decent chance he'll be ready for the season opener against Montreal on October 7.

Sjostrom: Recovery by Opening Night?

News: Sjostrom is a month away from being ready after having shoulder surgery this offseason, says a report by 640 Toronto's Jonas Seigel via Twitter.
Analysis: This is the first we've heard about a Sjostrom surgery. His return date is around opening day and the Leafs had better hope that's the case. He may not add much for his fantasy owners but he is awfully important when it comes to the Leafs' PK success.

Sjostrom's shoulder finally healthy

News: Maple Leafs RW Fredrik Sjostrom returned to the lineup on Thursday against the Devils after missing six games with a shoulder injury. He had no points in 14:48 of ice time and finished at even. He has no points in his last five games.
Analysis: The only thing that has really changed for Sjostrom since coming to Toronto via a trade from Calgary has been his playing time. He still isn't producing offensively and is far more important to his real team than Fantasy owners.

Sjostrom to miss couple of weeks

News: 640AM out of Toronto reports that Maple Leafs RW Fredrik Sjostrom will miss two weeks with a shoulder injury.
Analysis: Sjostrom came over from Calgary in a late January deal and has never been much of an offensive factor during his NHL career. Continue to ignore him in all Fantasy formats.

Sjostrom misses Sunday loss

News: Maple Leafs RW Fredrik Sjostrom missed Sunday's loss to the Maple Leafs with the upper-body injury he sustained a day earlier.
Analysis: Sjostrom, who came over from Calgary in a late-January trade, sees plenty of ice for Toronto when healthy but has little to no Fantasy value.

Sjostrom leaves injured against Sens

News: Maple Leafs RW Fredrik Sjostrom sustained an upper-body injury Saturday on a hit by Senators D Matt Carkner.
Analysis: Sjostrom had been playing a lot since coming over via trade from the Flames, but has minimal Fantasy value when healthy.

Sjostrom back after missing one game

News: Maple Leafs RW Fredrik Sjostrom returned to the lineup on Friday against the Blues after missing one game with an illness. He had no points in 14:57 of ice time and finished at minus-1.
Analysis: Sjostrom has totaled two points -- both assists -- in four games with Toronto since coming over in a trade from Calgary. Sjostrom has played a lot since the trade and could log a lot of minutes down the stretch. We aren't sure he will make a significant impact in Fantasy, but he could make some noise in deeper formats.

Sjostrom out with illness

Hanson, Sjostrom under the weather?

News: The Globe and Mail reports that Maple Leafs C Christian Hanson and RW Fredrik Sjostrom both appear to be out of Monday's game vs. the Sharks because of food poisoning.
Analysis: Luckily for Fantasy owners, both of these guys are just minimally-viable Fantasy options when healthy. Continue to ignore them in the majority of leagues.

Flames done with Sjostrom, trade him

News: The Toronto Maple Leafs shook up their struggling club, acquiring defenseman Dion Phaneuf from the Calgary Flames in a seven-player deal Sunday and swapping goalies with Anaheim to get Jean-Sebastien Giguere. Along with Phaneuf, Toronto received Keith Aulie and Fredrik Sjostrom from Calgary in exchange for Ian White, Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman and Jamal Mayers. The Maple Leafs also traded goalie Vesa Toskala and Jason Blake to Anaheim for Giguere.
Analysis: Sjostrom came to Calgary in the offseason after spending the previous five seasons with Phoenix and the Rangers. Calgary was excited to bring in a player who had yet to tap into his full potential. Unfortunately, Sjostrom didn't quite meet the expectations and was even a healthy scratch on occasion. He is not going to be a breakout offensive star with Toronto and still has marginal Fantasy appeal.

Sjostrom draws back into lineup

News: The Sports Xchange reports Flames LW Fredrik Sjostrom was back in the lineup on Thursday against the Blackhawks after being a healthy scratch the previous six games. The team needed his speed more than RW Brian McGrattan and his fisticuffs. McGrattan was a healthy scratch along with former Blackhawk D Aaron Johnson. It was Sjostrom's 400th game.
Analysis: Sjostrom has only one point in his last 30 games and hasn't scored since Oct. 20. It's not hard to see why Calgary is not playing him on a regular basis. Sjostrom has never been a great offensive player, but has managed to kick around the NHL. He has minimal Fantasy appeal until further notice.

Sjostrom sits in press box

News: The Sports Xchange reports Flames RW Fredrik Sjostrom was a healthy scratch for the third time this season on Sunday against the Canucks. Part of the reasoning would be to dress both Brian McGrattan and Brandon Prust, who are known more for their ability to drop the mitts. However, Sjostrom is also struggling offensively, and the Flames do need some of that from him.
Analysis: Sjostrom has only one point in his last 26 games and hasn't scored since Oct. 20. It's not hard to see why Calgary is fed up with his playing. Sjostrom has never been a great offensive player, but has managed to kick around the NHL. He has minimal Fantasy appeal until further notice.

Sjostrom nets impressive goal Tuesday

News: Flames RW Fredrik Sjostrom scored a goal, tallied an assist and finished at plus-2 during Tuesday's game against the Blue Jackets. Sjostrom took a pass behind his back, pulled the puck to his forehand and, despite being hooked off balance on a breakaway, spun around and curled the puck inside the far post from a sharp angle for his first goal with the Flames. "That was one of my better ones," he said. "It was just a spur-of-the-moment kind of thing. I was really excited to see that one go in, I've been waiting a long time."
Analysis: Sjostrom has five points and a plus-5 rating in his first nine games with the Flames. Sjostrom is a veteran of the NHL, but he has never really had an impressive stat line. He finally might break the mold in 2009-10 despite being a lower-line forward. However, there are still a lot of other impressive Fantasy options on the market, so Sjostrom still has limited appeal.

Sjostrom sees top-line time Monday

News: The Sports Xchange reports that Flames LW Fredrik Sjostrom was on the top line Monday alongside Jarome Iginla and Olli Jokinen, filling the spot that became vacant with the injury to David Moss.
Analysis: Sjostrom, a Swedish native, was a first-round draft selection (11th overall) of the Phoenix Coyotes in 2001 but has yet to live up to the hype in the NHL. Moss should be back soon, but keep an eye on how Sjostrom does in his absence.

Flames 'happy' to add Sjostrom

News: The Flames signed forward Fredrik Sjostrom to a contract Wednesday. Terms of the deal were not released. "Freddie is a reliable two-way player," Flames GM Darryl Sutter said. "We are happy to add him to our group as we identify him as a player who plays our style of game."
Analysis: Sjostrom, a Swedish native, was a first-round draft selection (11th overall) of the Phoenix Coyotes in 2001 but has yet to live up to the hype in the NHL. He totaled seven goals and 13 assists in 79 games with the Rangers last season. He also had 120 hits and 49 blocked shots. Sjostrom has minimal Fantasy appeal in standard leagues. He could be a flier in leagues that reward heavily for short-handed stats.

Sjostrom has three assists in last six

News: Rangers RW Fredrik Sjostrom tallied an assist and finished at plus-1 during Monday's game against the Devils. He has three assists in his last six games, but hasn't scored in seven outings.
Analysis: Sjostrom continues to see a steady dose of playing time despite the Rangers coaching change, but he is still not on the ice as a top offensive skater. He is primarily a lower-line forward and is best used in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for short-handed stats.
