Svitov suspended by the Jackets

News: Center Alexander Svitov, playing for a team in his native Russia, was suspended by the Blue Jackets on Thursday for failing to report to training camp. Svitov signed a two-year with the Blue Jackets in early July, but has since remained in Russia to play for Avangard Omsk of the Russian Super League. "It's procedurally necessary to get him off the (salary) cap and to preserve our rights as we move forward," general manager Scott Howson said Thursday.
Analysis: The 24-year-old Svitov, the third overall pick by Tampa Bay in the 2001 draft, had seven goals and 11 assists and was a solid player all last season for the Blue Jackets. Howson was asked why Svitov would sign the contract and then stay in Russia. "There was some family pressure on him to stay over there. He's connected to the team through relatives as well," Howson said. "He told me he just wanted to try it for a year. That's how it was left." It doesn't sound like Svitov will be back in North America any time soon and he might not necessarily be welcomed by the Blue Jackets if he does return.

Svitov signs with Avangard Omsk

News: TSN.ca is reporting Alexander Svitov, who managed seven goals and 18 points in 76 games with Columbus last season, has signed a deal to play with Avangard Omsk of the Russian Super League. "We were informed by Alexander's agent today that he has signed a contract to play with Avangard Omsk this season," Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson said. "We will explore the situation in greater detail with respect to Alexander's contract status and will make a decision after reviewing our options. While this news comes as a disappointment, it creates an opportunity for other players when we open training camp next month."
Analysis: Svitov never really panned out and adjusted to the North American game after being selected No. 3 overall by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2001. If he is done for good in the NHL, he leaves with only 13 goals and 37 points in 179 games with the Lightning and Blue Jackets. Only Fantasy owners in deeper leagues should be concerned.

News: Alexander Svitov told the Columbus Dispatch that the "upper body injury" he has been dealing with is actually a mild concussion.
Analysis: Keep Svitov reserved in all leagues for Fantasy Week 23 (March 5-11) if you have healthier alternatives. Geoff Platt was recalled from Syracuse and picked up two assists skating with Rick Nash and David Vyborny on the top scoring line in his absence.

C Svitov scores goal Sunday

News: Alexander Svitov picked up a goal on his only shot of the game in 13:02 of ice time in Sunday's game against the Blackhawks.

Svitov loses talented linemates

News: The Columbus Dispatch reports coach Ken Hitchcock mixed up his lines with the return of Nikolai Zherdev from a severe chest cold. Nikolai Zherdev joined Sergei Fedorov and Fredrik Modin on the top scoring line. Dan Fritsche is centering the second line with Rick Nash and David Vyborny.
Analysis: The third line consists of Anson Carter-Jason Chimera-Alexander Svitov and the checking line is made up of Gilbert Brule-Manny Malhotra-Jody Shelley. Svitov has limited Fantasy appeal unless he can get back on to one of the top two scoring lines.

Svitov to skate w/Fedorov

News: The Columbus Dispatch reports Sergei Fedorov will have new linemates for Tuesday's game against the Coyotes. He will be skating with Alexander Svitov and David Vyborny instead of being paired with Rick Nash. Coach Ken Hitchcock told the Columbus Dispatch, "Feds canít play center, so we needed to organize things and have others take faceoffs. My feeling is we need to start with the puck a little more. These three guys (Fedorov-Svitov-Vyborny) will play a lot against the other teamsí best players. Thatís a major focus. We have a six-game homestand, and itís like a playoff series."
Analysis: Fedorov's presence makes Svitov a lot more attractive from a Fantasy perspective. He is worth a look as a No. 3 or 4 Fantasy center if you need help at the position in leagues of 12 or more teams.

Svitov has three assists Friday

News: Blue Jackets C Alexander Svitov had three assists Friday in the Blue Jackets' 4-3 win in Anaheim. It was a career high for Svitov.

C Svitov in, Platt out

News: Alexander Svitov (shoulder) was able to make his regular season debut on Saturday against the Blackhawks. He was able to play center on the team's No. 2 line in place of Geoff Platt.
Analysis: Svitov has a decent role, but he has done nothing in the past to deserve any Fantasy consideration at this time. Meanwhile, Platt is no longer worth a look in any Fantasy format.

Svitov will not start on IR

News: The Columbus Dispatch reports Alexander Svitov (shoulder) will not start the regular season on injured reserve, but he might be out at least another week.
Analysis: Svitov might scoot up to the team's top scoring line once he is able to return, as Sergei Fedorov is on IR and out until at least late October. Mark Hartigan is expected to serve as the team's top line center to begin the season.

Svitov nursing shoulder injury

News: The Columbus Dispatch is reporting Alexander Svitov was forced out of Sunday's preseason game due to a shoulder injury and he might have a separation.
Analysis: Svitov had been getting time on the top two scoring lines during the preseason, so this is a tough blow for him. He was considered a sleeper heading into Draft Day, but if he is sidelined for a few weeks into the regular season, go another way and try to pluck him off of the waiver wire later.

Svitov to return to Columbus

News: The Columbus Post-Dispatch reports the Blue Jackets are expected to announce the re-signing of Alexander Svitov to a one-year contract next week. He posted 19 goals and 42 points in 2004-05 for Columbus' AHL affiliate and three goals and 10 points in 33 games for Omsk Avangard in Russia last season.
Analysis: The former third overall pick by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2001 has failed to live up to expectations, but will get another chance in North America to show what he can do. He will battle for a job on the third or fourth line in training camp, so avoid drafting him for now.

Lightning recall Svitov from minors

News: The Lightning recalled Alex Svitov from Hamilton of the AHL on Monday, according to the Tampa Tribune. "We want that big body in there," general manager Jay Feaster said. "We look at our schedule and what is coming up and where we are right now; we like his size and his ability to control the puck. He's strong on the walls, the type of things that he has been doing well to this point in Hamilton."
Analysis: Svitov might be worth adding to a Fantasy roster in larger leagues, but wait and see how he performs in his first few games.
