Canucks Send Vandermeer To Minors

News: Jim Vandermeer was assigned to AHL Chicago on Tuesday.
Analysis: The defenseman went unclaimed on waivers, earning the demotion to the minors while Jordan Schroeder was called up in his place. Jim Vandermeer appears to be strictly organizational depth, and seems destined to shuttle between Chicago and Vancouver throughout the season.

Canucks Giving Vandermeer A Look At Forward

News: Jim Vandermeer could make the Canucks final roster as a forward, the Vancouver Province reports.
Analysis: In this scenario, Jim Vandermeer would be the Canucks' 13th forward. He would be valued more for his ability to toughness and willingness to drop the gloves than his offensive prowess. This role could lead to some solid penalty minute production from Vandermeer, but don't expect him to contribute much in other areas.

Vandermeer Signs With Canucks

Analysis: Jim Vandermeer will head to Vancouver after spending last season with the Sharks. The veteran defenseman doesn't do much scoring, but he could provide some depth on the blue line.

Sharks' Vandermeer Nets First Goal Of Season

News: Jim Vandermeer scored his first goal of the season on Tuesday as the Sharks lost to the Oilers 3-2 in a shootout.
Analysis: Jim Vandermeer, who had been out of the lineup for over a month in January, scored the Sharks' opening goal on Tuesday night. His ice time has dropped since going on injured reserve in December, and he doesn't play a significant fantasy role.

Sharks Activate Vandermeer From Injured Reserve

News: The Sharks activated Jim Vandermeer (upper body) from injured reserve Saturday, according to the Sharks' official website.
Analysis: Jim Vandermeer has been sidelined since Dec. 6, but he could be back on the ice as soon as Saturday if head coach Todd McLellan opts to put him in the lineup.

Sharks' Vandermeer Place On Injured Reserve

News: Jim Vandermeer was placed on injured reserve, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Jim Vandermeer's return is still questionable as he's traveled with the team for the past two games. Although with only three assists in ten games he wasn't playing a big role for the Sharks.

Sharks' Vandermeer Makes First Appearance In Teal

News: Jim Vandermeer made his debut for the Sharks in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Blues, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Jim Vandermeer, who was used as an extra defenseman, blocked a pair of shots in less than 10 minutes of ice time. His role is too tenuous to warrant a serious look in fantasy hockey.

Sharks' Vandermeer Not Starting In Season Opener

News: Jim Vandermeer won't be in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Coyotes, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Jim Vandermeer, a stay-at-home type, would give the Sharks another veteran on the defensive end whenever called upon. But he can safely be ignored in all fantasy leagues until such opportunities come his way.

Vandermeer Gives Sharks Options On Blue Line

News: The Sharks have extra depth on defense this season, giving a player like Jim Vandermeer more competition ahead of a new campaign, CSN's Brodie Brazil reports.
Analysis: Sharks GM Doug Wilson brought defensemen Brent Burns and Colin White to San Jose this summer, and that extra crowding on the blue line all but promises to leave Jim Vandermeer, a stay-at-home type who has earned a one-year contract, in a battle for a roster spot as a bottom-pairing rearguard in 2011-12.

Sharks Ink Vandermeer To One-Year Deal

News: The Sharks signed Vandermeer to a one-year, $1 million contract Friday, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: "I'm a gritty type of D-man who plays a good defensive game, kills penalties and blocks shots," said Vandermeer, who had 14 points (2 G, 12 A) and 74 penalty minutes with the Oilers last season. The left-shooting rearguard won't fill up the scoresheet very often, but he figures to do some of the dirty work that doesn't always translate to fantasy points like strengthening the team's penalty-killing unit and disrupting traffic when other teams have the puck.

Oilers Seem To Be Showcasing Vandermeer

News: The Oilers seem to be showcasing Vandermeer, according to the Edmonton Sun.
Analysis: Vandermeer played over 24 minutes in the game Wednesday, kind of odd considering he is generally not considered one of their top d-man. Perhaps he was just having a hot night, or the Oilers are trying to drive up his price.

Vandermeer May Be Playing His Way Out Of Edmonton

News: Vandermeer may be playing his way out of Edmonton, according to the Edmonton Journal.
Analysis: Vandermeer is the type of physical defenseman that can play 16-18 minutes a game that playoff teams love to have. His value to the Oilers is the draft pick(s) he would bring back in return, rather than playing out the remainder of the season.

Oilers' Vandermeer Leaves Game Early

News: Vandermeer left the game early versus the Islanders on Thursday, according to the Edmonton Journal.
Analysis: This is the same ankle that Vandermeer sprained a few weeks ago. Seems he may have come back to early as he never came out of the locker room for the second period.

Edmonton's Vandermeer Expected Back Tuesday

News: Vandermeer (ankle) is expected to play against Detroit, the Edmonton Journal reports.
Analysis: Vandermeer was never much of a scorer, and his penalty minutes are down significantly the past two years. Unless that changes, he isn't really a fantasy option.

Oilers' Vandermeer Cleared To Play

News: Vandermeer (ankle) has been cleared to play, according to the Oilers web site.

Edmonton's Vandermeer Skating

News: Vandermeer (ankle) took part in Edmonton's morning skate Thursday but is doubtful to play against Colorado the same day, EdmontonOilers.com reports.

Vandermeer Injures Ankle Sunday

News: Vandermeer left with an ankle injury in the first period Sunday and did not return, the Associated Press reports.
Analysis: Vandermeer, who has five points (1G, 4A) in 24 games, should be considered day-to-day until more information is available.

Vandermeer has rare two-point game

News: Coyotes D Jim Vandermeer scored a goal, tallied an assist and finished at plus-3 on Monday against the Oilers. Vandermeer scored Phoenix's fourth goal on a sizzling slap shot from just in front of the blue line with 14:12 to play in the second. It was also his fourth goal and first score since Nov. 29.
Analysis: Vandermeer missed some time in January with an upper-body injury, but it's not the reason why he hasn't scored a lot. Vandermeer is not an offensive talent. He is definitely more of a checking presence. His Fantasy value lies in leagues that reward heavily for short-handed stats and PIM despite the big night.

Vandermeer logs 21 minutes in return

News: Coyotes D Jim Vandermeer was back in the lineup on Tuesday against the Oilers after missing four games with an upper-body injury. He had no points in 21 minutes of ice time and finished at minus-1. He also spent two minutes in the penalty box.
Analysis: Coach Dave Tippett held all along that this was a minor injury Vandermeer was dealing with. But it was still enough to keep him out a week. The fact he played 21 minutes on Tuesday is a good indication he is healthy again. Vandermeer is mostly on the ice for his defensive presence, so his Fantasy value lies in leagues that reward heavily for short-handed stats and PIM when healthy.

Vandermeer doesn't return Saturday

News: Coyotes D Jim Vandermeer remained sidelined Saturday as Phoenix fell to Detroit.
Analysis: Vandermeer doesn't have a serious injury, but there is no timetable for his return. He is mostly on the ice for his defensive presence anyway, so his Fantasy value lies in leagues that reward heavily for short-handed stats and PIM when healthy.
