Canes' Hainsey Focusing On Defensive Role

News: Ron Hainsey has just 15 points this season, but is one of just three Carolina players to have played in all 73 games thus far.
Analysis: It's been five years since Ron Hainsey recorded a career-best 39 points with the Thrashers back in 2008-09, so the chances of him getting back to those kinds of numbers are slim. These days, he's being used in more of a stay-at-home defensive role, focusing instead on killing penalties (2:08 average shorthanded TOI) and blocking shots (106, second-highest on the team). Hainsey's durable and dependable, but he does not make for a particularly good fantasy play outside of ultra-deep leagues that count secondary stat categories.

Canes' Hainsey Offering Little Point Production

News: Ron Hainsey has 12 points and a minus-10 rating in 57 games this season.
Analysis: Like most defensemen, Ron Hainsey's offensive production certainly isn't terrible, but it's probably not quite good enough to separate him from some of the other options that may be out there on the waiver wire. His 72 hits and 80 blocks give him a little extra value in leagues in which those categories are counted.

Canes' Hainsey On Ice For Warmups

News: Ron Hainsey (illness) took part in pregame warmups Thursday, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: The blueliner has been sidelined with an illness, but appears to be well enough to return to the lineup Thursday to take on the Maple Leafs. Ron Hainsey has three goals and seven assists in 43 games this season, limiting his value to very deep leagues.

Hurricanes' Hainsey: Game-Time Decision Thursday

News: Ron Hainsey (illness) will be a game-time decision Thursday against the Maple Leafs, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: Ron Hainsey was feeling under the weather when he woke up Thursday morning and skipped the team's early skate. He'll be reevaluated in the afternoon before coach Kirk Muller makes a decision regarding his availability for the game.

Canes' Hainsey Delivering Plenty Of Hits

News: Ron Hainsey has just a single assist in his last 10 games and nine points on the season, but is one of only five Hurricanes to have played in all 39 games so far.
Analysis: The good news is, Ron Hainsey, who has had trouble staying healthy the past few seasons, is showing some rare durability this year. Unfortunately, fantasy owners have seen his scoring totals decline steadily following a career-high 39 points back in 2008-09 with the Atlanta Thrashers. These days, Hainsey plays more of a stay-at-home defensive role, blocking shots (second on the team with 59) and killing penalties (third in average shorthanded TOI per game with 2:17). If you're in a deep fantasy league that rewards for either of these two categories, Hainsey has some modest value. Otherwise, he's fodder.

Canes' Hainsey Practices

News: Ron Hainsey (illness) practiced with the team Wednesday, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: It looks like the blueliner will be good to go for Thursday's matchup with the Red Wings, but with just two goals and two assists in 21 games, he's not much of a fantasy factor outside the deepest of leagues.

Canes' Hainsey Dealing With Flu

News: Ron Hainsey is day-to-day with the flu, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: The Hurricanes won't play again until Thursday, so he's still got a little bit of time to recover from the illness. With just four points in 21 games this season, Ron Hainsey offers most of his utility working in front of Cam Ward rather than on the attack.

Canes' Hainsey Scores Unlikely Game-Winner

News: Ron Hainsey was credited with the game-winning goal in Thursday's 3-2 win over the Maple Leafs, after Toronto goalkeeper Jonathan Bernier allowed a cleared puck to bounce off the boards and into the net.
Analysis: Ron Hainsey dumped the puck deep into the Toronto zone, and the Hurricanes somehow ended up with a goal, thanks to the new hybrid icing rule and a horrific misplay by Bernier. Hainsey was credited with a goal for the second game in a row, though we wouldn't read too much into it, as this one was pure luck. The veteran defenseman hasn't topped 20 points since 2009-10, and the goal he scored Tuesday was his first since 2010-11.

Canes Sign Hainsey

News: The Hurricanes signed Ron Hainsey to a one-year contract Thursday, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: The veteran blueliner signed on for $2 million for the 2013-14 season, and should help fill the hole left by Joni Pitkanen, who will miss the entire season with a heel injury. Ron Hainsey recorded 13 assists in 47 games with the Jets last season, and hasn't scored a goal since 2010-11.

Jets' Hainsey Ready

News: Ron Hainsey (left hand) will be available to play Tuesday against the Hurricanes, Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press reports.
Analysis: Ron Hainsey -- who has nine assists and eight PIMs in 32 games to date -- is of marginal fantasy utility in leagues where his blocked shots (78) aren't factored in.

Jets' Hainsey Out Sunday

News: Ron Hainsey (left hand) won't play Sunday against the Lightning, the Winnipeg Sun reports.
Analysis: Ron Hainsey -- who has nine assists and eight PIMs in 32 games to date -- will sit Sunday after taking a puck to the left hand in Friday's game against the Capitals.

Jets' Hainsey Adds Assist In Loss

News: Ron Hainsey assisted on a second-period goal by Nik Antropov in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the Canadiens.
Analysis: Ron Hainsey scored just 10 points in 56 games last season and he hasn't cracked the 30-point plateau since the 2008-09 season. He can chip in offensively once in a while, but with Dustin Byfuglien and Tobias Enstrom leading the charge in terms of point production from the Jets' blue line, Hainsey's fantasy value is limited.

Hainsey Out For Winnipeg

News: Ron Hainsey (foot) will miss Saturday's game against Tampa Bay, Winnipeg Sun writer Ken Wiebe reports.
Analysis: Ron Hainsey's season concludes with 10 points in 56 games. He has one year left on his contract.

Jets' Hainsey Out With Injured Foot

News: Ron Hainsey (foot) has been ruled out for Thursday's game, Dan Kamal of CJOB-AM/Winnipeg reports.
Analysis: Ron Hainsey's status for Saturday's regular season finale remains unknown but with just 10 points in 56 games to date, the only category where he can help fantasy owners is blocks; he has recorded 133 thus far.

Hainsey (Foot) Questionable For Thursday

News: Ron Hainsey's availability for Winnipeg's last two games is in doubt after he took a shot to the foot in Tuesday's win over Florida, Kirk Penton of the Winnipeg Sun reports.
Analysis: Ron Hainsey had scant fantasy value to begin with, and this ailment leaves him with none at all for the season's balance.

Jets' Hainsey Maintains Strong Differential

News: Though injuries have limited the blue-liner's availability this season, Ron Hainsey has posted a plus-9 goal differential through the 14 games he has played in.
Analysis: With the ankle issue that dogged the American veteran for the first half of December finally behind him, Ron Hainsey has shined as a member of Winnipeg's starting defensive pairing. The potential for positive goal differential is only increased given Hainsey's inclusion on the Jets' second power play unit.

Jets' Hainsey To Return Tuesday

News: Ron Hainsey (ankle) will make his return to the Winnipeg lineup Tuesday against the Wild, the Winnipeg Sun reports.
Analysis: Ron Hainsey has been limited to only five games this year, so the Jets are certainly looking forward to getting him back on the ice. He has two points and is a plus-4 over those five games.

Jets' Hainsey Out Against Bruins

News: Ron Hainsey (lower body) participated in the morning skate, but will not play against the Bruins on Tuesday, TSN.ca reports.
Analysis: This is good news considering that the last news on Ron Hainsey was that he is out "indefinitely" instead of "day-to-day".

Jets' Hainsey Now Out Indefinitely

News: Ron Hainsey (lower body) is no longer considered day-to-day and will be out indefinitely, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports.
Analysis: Ron Hainsey's upper body injury has lingered since October, and while he was able to return for one game last week he has not played since, indicating he either aggravated the injury, or returned a bit too soon. The Jets' blue line corps remains depleted with Hainsey, as well as three other defenders, unlikely to play anytime soon.

Jets' Hainsey Sits Out Second Straight Game Saturday

News: Ron Hainsey (lower body) did not play in Saturday's game, the Winnipeg Sun reports.
Analysis: Ron Hainsey was considered a game-time decision coming into Saturday. He made his return from a 16-game absence Wednesday, and the Jets seem to be easing him back into action. They've held him out of two straight games now, but his owners will have to hope that his next return is more permanent.

Hainsey A Game-Time Decision For Winnipeg

News: Ron Hainsey (lower body) is a game-time decision for Saturday's game against Boston, Winnipeg Sun writer Ken Wiebe reports.
Analysis: Although he's still questionable for the game, it nonetheless marks an upgrade in status for Ron Hainsey.

Jets' Hainsey Questionable For Friday

News: Ron Hainsey is considered questionable for Friday's game against the Hurricanes, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports.
Analysis: Ron Hainsey just returned to the ice Wednesday after missing 16 games with an upper body injury, so it appears likely that he is not 100 percent just yet. The good news is Hainsey was not immediately ruled out, so hopefully he's just still a little sore.

Jets Getting Hainsey Back Wednesday

News: Ron Hainsey (upper body) will rejoin the Jets' lineup Wednesday night, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports.
Analysis: He's on track to skate in a pairing with Zach Bogosian after a lengthy stint on IR. For deeper leagues, Ron Hainsey could be a nice pickup on the blue line as he should log heavy minutes for the Jets.

Hainsey Getting Closer To Jets Return

News: After missing 16 games with an upper body injury Ron Hainsey hinted at a return date to the ice, telling the Winnipeg Free Press "relatively soon."
Analysis: Though it isn't the most exact timeline, it's at least a timeline. Ron Hainsey has been back to practicing with his teammates regularly and could even play on the team's upcoming road trip. Keep an eye on Hainsey as a quality pickup when he does return.

Jets' Hainsey Still Not Close

News: Ron Hainsey has "plateaued" in his recovery from an upper body injury and has yet to practice with the team, the Winnipeg Free Press reports.
Analysis: Definitely keep Ron Hainsey out of your lineup this week, while the team has to be getting worried with so many injuries on the blue line. Tobias Enstrom seems to be out for at least a few weeks with a broken collarbone.
